Initially Norwegian claims in Antarctica stems from the early 1900's as a way to secure a guarantee regarding whale fishing. As to why it's still a supposed claim now comes down to the the Antarctic Treaty being upheld. Currently the "reason" is research related. It's going to get really contentious down there in the not too distant future and there will be wars fought over it. If the amount of oil there is correct, that alone will suffice in it's justification. The resources that continent holds beyond the oil reserves is presumably absolutely bonkers on account of it's size and once it's melted enough there's going to be heavy exploration and exploitation of said resource.
@@orishaeshu1084i mean, before we even run out of the oil reserves we found now. Climate change will have destroyed almost everything. We already have enough oil reserves to end the world. We don't need more.
I love the channel but there are lots of important information missing in terms of context for this video. The presence of Argentina (and I believe also Chile) in the sector that UK claims dates back to the eighteen hundreds. Argentina for example, is by a huge margin, the first country with continued presence in the region since 1904. Your narrative implies that some of the nations with claims in the area are ramping up building construction to assert rights of presence and occupation ahead of a possible oil exploitation craze. I have not seen that happening and doubt we will see any movement in that direction before the land and sea ownership is further clarified with a review or renewal of the Antarctic treaty. My advice: focus on the Artic and leave the Antarctic to the nations of the south 😉
Always does… remember „no future“? No? I also don’t know because this was even before I was born in the 90s… But on the other end even if we all would be f***ed up it would be interesting how China would swarm rush Taiwan. Black clouds of DJI drones shadowing the coast…. dystopic.
Not many know that Antarctica is also where we learn about the moon and mars because meteors from those bodies land in the Antarctic ice and remain pristine more or less. I have a professor who goes on multi week asteroid hunting expeditions. So cool
I would love to see a design piece on the roofing system of the new building. Particularly, how the snowfall is directed off the building and towards the “dock” areas where they would seem to fall victim to the same slides and accumulations that are shown at 13:24 - 13:27. The seasonal snowfall is measured in Meters☺️
Hopefully in 2048 they see the importance of protecting this majestic continent. Though I feel in the future, Antarctica will become a foundation for war, especially as we grow as a species and resources become more scarce.
Great, so now we're going to get a building boom in Antarctica to mine oil that we need to be phasing out usage ASAP, not finding even more to help mess up the planet.
Drilling for an un-necessary resource that, if utilized, will contribute to an unlivable world for our kids and grand kids has got to be the stupidest thing ever. The already unimaginably rich making themselves richer at YOUR expense. Report it like it is guy. Lol, those billionaires will reinvest in the economy JUST LIKE TRICKLE DOWN! Enjoy the channel, hate the money pandering.
200 mph is 320 kmh Did you know roughly 70% of the world population uses the metric system? It is probably different for your audience, but still, probably worth having both imperial and metric
@@glenneroo3193 Brits are confused with their measurements. They use some metric and some imperial. For a channel this size I'd expect both to be provided for viewers.
If there is ever any kind of resource extraction in Antartica, it needs to be for the good of the world not for any nation or company. Hopefully it never happens.
I would imagine there is a very good reason why they don't use windmills for energy... I'm thinking along the ice that would inevitably form on the windmills... such a waste, though.
the arc of this channel is beautiful. been following for the past four years, your graph is only going upward with every video. looking forward to more in the future. much love from India🇮🇳
It’s not only 7 countries though. You have all of the Nordics, who are part of the Arctic council, making a claim or see themselves have a right to have activity in the region.
@@dextrodus While that person is holding the map upside down apparently, at least Norway has a claim on the antarctic(one of the large claims), stemming back from being the country of origin of the first explorer to ever reach the south pole. 2:51 light blue claim is Norwegian.
Antarctica is definitely going to be the key for the mid century, it’s foolish to imagine otherwise. Idealistic scraps like the outer space treaty, lunar treaty and the lunar treaty only restrict, not help, mankind, and mankind is getting more desperate. If Argentina, say, sees the peninsula as a way out of debt, then bye bye, penguins.
The climate is changing, now it’s even in memes. My parents are conservatives and already accepted that the climate changes. They just think we can’t reverse it any time soon, just reduce the damage
0:15 You say here it's without a doubt the hottest environment known demand and then say it's - whatever degrees? How is that the hottest? I would imagine that would be the coldest if that is the coldest I don't know if it is or not but yeah I just don't know how it's the hottest
