Shortly before my Mallorca vacation I learned that carbon rim brake wheels might not be the smartest choice for the terrain on the island. Last minute I purchased these DT Swiss wheels and have now ridden a couple tours with them already. Here comes my first take on this wheelset.

Make sure you take extra brake pads for the oxic wheels as the recommended pads wear out quickly especially under higher than average braking loads.

Glad you said this as i took an extra pair with me 🤜🤛 but felt a bit paranoid doing so. Good to know it seems like that made sense.
@NeoPayneHK

this is some kind of "issue" when DT swiss make the oxic way way too harder than all the other brands they almost never fade out but only chew up your brake pads~~~ always keep another spare pair brake pads and it would be fine
@wesleyvandeurzen7199
@wesleyvandeurzen7199 3 месяца назад
btw you can use Swisside yellow king pads. They are very soft and wear out quick but this is actually good because they wear out the carbon wheels very slowly AND they dissipate heat better.

Got exactly those on a bike I bought second hand. I live in Holland, so I don't brake much, but they're slightly warn in colour now (approx 20k) and a few zilver stripes on the rim where I probably had a little stone in my brake pad or something. Also own a set of vision team 35 comp sl, that I've bought new for another bike a couple of months ago and those already went shiny silver alloy within a few rides.

Had these on my ex's bike, while the Fulcrum Racing Zero Nite (almost the same as Campy Shamal Mille) on mine. The Fulcrums felt just a bit better (snappier/stiffer), they probably are the best alloy climbing wheels out there - but the DTs are definitely not far off.

@zikaperic2133

Indeed there should be 100g diff so that's expected. On the other hand,, Fulcrum Zero should be slightly less aero and I also feel on a longer descents having more metal helps dissipating heat. Also, I would guess that DT would be slightly better quality on a longer period (DT 240 hub is is rock solid)

Hi ! Nice video ... These wheels interest me a lot. I'm looking for wheels with V brakes and versatile. I rarely ride in the mountains but on hilly terrain during long distance rides (I'm a fresh PBP finisher ;) ). I hesitate between these wheels and the PRC 1400 35 mm. I'm not a very powerful runner...I ride around 25/26 km/h on my hilly plain rides with old aluminium Mavic ksyrium pro sl. Any advise ? Thanks !
@klein-concept
@klein-concept 10 месяцев назад
Thanks a lot. So far i can really recommend these wheels a lot. But if you dont ride super steep or long decents you might as well want to look into some carbon rims from a company called Elitewheels. They have a more budget line called Marvel and a lightweight line called Drive. I have both and like them a lot as well. And price wise they are between 600 Euro and 1200 Euro i think.
@ruudboek
@ruudboek Год назад
I have Aforce AL33 alloy rim brake wheels, they are 1580 grams at 32.5mm deep, but the rim shape is toroidal which makes them more aero. They are quite wide at 26.2mm outer and 19.6mm inner width. I like how they sound when i ride them. The braking surface was created using a method called Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) which sounds quite similar to the OXIC braking surface of the DT SWISS PR. I do not hope that it is the same, because on my wheels they seem to not last very long. I do also have to say that the PEO braking surface not lasting is a rather notorious issue for the Aforce AL33 wheelset, so it could be a wheel set/brand specific issue.
@klein-concept
@klein-concept Год назад
They look great. Seems like they do the same magic with the break track. 😍
@ruudboek
@ruudboek Год назад
@@klein-concept When the brake track is worn out, i am going to ride them for a few minutes with 400 grit sandpaper superglued to the break shoes to sand them down to the aluminum. I did that with my previous wheelset with an anodized brake track as well and it worked like a charm. The brake surface looked perfect after doing that. Then i will get me some nice tan/skin walled tires, it think that goes better with aluminum brake tracks.

any change since version 2018? I own the 21, my rear wheels has always been making an annoying sound coming from the points where hubs are crossing. A true pain in the arse solved by applying some thick oil but it makes the wheels dirtier and if you wash the bike you need to re-apply.

Thanks for the video! I have considered these wheels for replacing my zero nite. One concern, if the rim is 18mm inner and 21.5mm outer width, it must be a pretty tiny construction for the load of the pads? Have you considered the 21mm hight rim version, its lighter. But again, less material to absorb the heat on a decent?
@klein-concept
@klein-concept Год назад
To be honest i didnt really consider this when making the purchase. You re thinking in terms of stability or for heat distribution? I looked at the 21 version but visually preferred the slightly deeper ones.
@carsten44
@carsten44 Год назад
@@klein-concept Thanks for your reply. Just thinking, if its 18mm btw the hooks, then the wall itself maybe is less than 1mm, so its a concern for stability also with regard to the stress from the tire...maybe not an issue. Agree! the 32 version is much more nice, it might have have better heat dissipation due to increased surface.
@klein-concept
@klein-concept Год назад
@@carsten44 had a look at their website and if you look at the rim construction it more looks like the wall should be at least 2mm. Have a look here in the spec overview www.dtswiss.com/en/wheels/wheels-road/performance/pr-1400-dicut-oxic

Very good video and you give us good explanation about the wheels. I run with fulcrum racing 4 (good for their money, 400 euros - 35 profile 1700 weight gives you stability on the straights). Why should I choose dt and not let's say shamal camp (more expensive for sure if we don't consider the price). Thanks.
@klein-concept
@klein-concept 5 месяцев назад
Thanks a lot. I went for these over e.g. the camp ones because i read that the oxic breaking surface treatment is supposed to give you extra braking power. But i can not fully validate this as i didnt run the campy wheels and can only compare to my carbon wheels, where obviously the oxic break track provides way better braking power. But the look also played a bit of a role here. I really liked to keep the braking surface black 🫣😂😂
