Why they hate Wonyoung (A kpop commentary) 

We love wonyoung

i think a big reason why people hate Wonyoung is because instead of making herself smaller and keeping her head down in shame after whatever "scandal" or controversy she ends up in (like how they previously did to other female idols), she instead takes up space. She poses, winks, smiles and that irritates people to no bounds. Also kpop stans love to feel like a hero to their idols, for example an idol could open up about their insecurities and the fans would rush to tell them how beautiful or talented they are, and that's just not the case with Wonyoung. She's self-assured and confident, and there's nothing that people hate more than a beautiful woman knowing her worth. (this is not to say that the insecure idols are at fault in any way.) It all boils down to jealousy and kpop stans' need for a punching bag.

It's also the double standard with the favortism that annoys me. In Eleven era, Wonyoung wore like a big fluffy skirt, and everyone cried favortism. But then Gaeul wore an even bigger more noticable skirt in Love Dive era, standing out from the rest of the members, and she got praise. Gaeul deserved the praise, Wonyoung didn't deserve the hate.

ahhh i have many reasons why people have such a hate-boner for wonyoung 1) _she is indisputably the it-girl of the 4th gen._ she is the person who has the highest demand for cfs. no ifs ands or buts. and for people who enjoy kpop more like a sport rather than an artform, she is the reason their fave 'lost'. 2) _she is unapologetically tall_ and talks about how she likes it. BUT, she also doesn't fluff up her height so when she's in the flattest flats known to man standing next to a bg member who clearly has insoles and is /still visibly shorter than her, rather than accepting that the company lied their head off about bg member's height, they neg wonyoung about her height claiming that 'she's lying' lol 3) _her 'fake' voice._ and damn i find this one fascinating. it's almost like haters are trying to masculinize her as a tall woman with a deep voice as an insult??? like??? what?!?!?!? yeah she has a deeper voice when she uses a different inflection, and what of it? SO many idols do it as well but people usually blame the company for forcing it to be hidden or praise the duality the idol possesses. but wonyo? nahh she clearly is doing it to deceive, she's doing it to be a pick-me. yawn. 4) _she is proactive with protecting her privacy, both mental and social._ my theory on this one is that it angers people that she is everywhere in terms of her image but is private about her life which doesn't allow haters to exploit her they way they can with other idols -there's nothing wrong with being more open with fans btw, i'm just saying that being private shouldn't be vilified either- she doesn't really disclose her friendships, and she has a very strong mental barrier. this enrages people who participate in hate trains bc that means she doesn't give them any attention 5) _she presents hyper femininely_ i think this is something that goes beyond just kpop, but society as a whole is largely unaccepting of extreme forms of gender presentation, regardless of if it aligned with the one assigned at birth or not. on top of that, throw in someone who is assertive, confident and ambitious, all traits that are positively associated with masculinity, in that hyper femme presentation and suddenly all of those good traits take on a negative light. assertiveness becomes rudeness, confidence becomes princess syndrome, and ambition becomes selfishness.

The amount of people who don't know that she is 19 is actually kind of scary. Like they were holding her standards like she was a full-grown adult. The fact that so many people were harassing a child or a barely legal adult is crazy. And what makes it worse is that they didn't even know that they were dragging someone so young. And even if she was an adult no one deserves to be dragged like that. Choose only one year older than me but the way me and her would be treated I know would be completely different. I still would be treated as a young person but she would be treated as if she was 25. Not a teenager who is about to enter her early twenties who is still learning and is still growing into her own self. The fact that a teenager is a role model to so many people makes me anxious for her because you're at that point where you're finding your self on top of having so many eyes on you. Wonyoung is a beautiful person. And she has an adorable face okay she may be older than me but she's adorable. People tend to criticize her without realizing that she is so young and she is still developing her skills. And she has improved impeccably. She makes me feel prettier every time she's confident on screen. I'm not the biggest fan of Ive not because I dislike them because I'm exploring so many other groups of discographies at the moment that these girls have to wait a bit but let me just tell you I think they have some of the best discography in the 4th gen.

I think the main reason some people love to hate Wonyoung is simply because they feel threatened by her. They see her as better than themselves, something they don’t have etc. It’s really sad, and it’s CRAZY to me that, Wonyoung hasn’t actually done anything problematic.. ever. Forget hating Wonyoung, people should be hating actual CRIMINALS that are out and walking free.. I adore IVE, I always have. Since debut (When I got into KPOP) I knew this was my group. About the "Wonyoung going to the centre" thing, another reason is that idols are drilled into standing in a certain lineup. I remember Mamamoo saying that it feels really unnatural when they're not stood in their usual formation during photos. It's probably just muscle memory at this point for Wonyoung to go to the centre when group photos are happening because she has likely done it for tens or hundreds of hours before IVE even debuted. Also people getting up in arms about an idol eating cutely, like... even if she is doing it deliberately (which she obviously was for the pizza ad, being PROMOTIONAL), is it hurting you? Like, maybe touch grass if you're getting that wound up about it.

As a Wonyoung supporter since produce Wonyoung has always been the center of hate by k-pop stans it started way back when Wonyoung was announced as the center of IZ*ONE Sakura fans were livid over the fact that someone won against their fave and started saying Wonyoung didn’t deserve her place when she rightfully did deserve it she CONSISTENTLY ranked high during the whole show and was arguably the most popular contestant alongside Kkura,Yujin and Gaeun and then people started saying Wonyoung was an attention seeker because she jokingly said that Yujin didn’t shower yes it was misplaced but she was only 14 and didn’t deserve the hate and there was also the "Wonyoung pushed Sakura" thing and it was debunked Sakura just happened to move at the same time Wonyoung adjusted her skirt

wonyoungism isnt only looking like wonyoung or doing things like her, it also includes the "it girl" mindset, which embraces confidence and the skill to make the best decisions for yourself.

I’ve had literal arguments in the comments with people who say that wonyoung is ‘influencing young kids to have Ed’s’, Which number 1 as you said she has never encouraged dieting culture nor has she talked about any diets that she has possibly gone on. At the end of the day if these kids do end up with eating disorders surely their parents should notice that their kid isn’t eating or doing dangerous diets.

This first time I’ve seen her, I loved her. She stood out to me. She’s like a princess. Reminds me a lot of another K-Celebrity I like, Song Jia. They’re both so hated despite being so elegant and I’m convinced it’s jealously, insecurity and projections on the audience’s part. That’s it.

people hate anyone who stands out, we've seen it with so many idols - they hated goo hara for having lunches with men and called her boy-obsessed because other female idols wouldn't have lunches with male idols so it was shocking to the public, they now hate ahyeon from babymonster because her dancing was more sharp from her other group members and she would sing and rap really confidently (the "overperforming" scandal) so now ahyeon has toned down her performance way more in order not to stand out. people are never happy when someone stands out because they are a "pick me", which honestly kills creativity and if I were an idol getting such hate for the most normal things I would literally quit cuz wtf people

Wonyoung is the female version of Eunwoo. She has the biggest fanbase, the most brand deals and gets the most exposer in her group. That brings out the jelousy of people and turn them into haters. Haters are usually more obessed with the idol that hate on than the fans. They look for everything that could be a mistake, an act of favorism etc. I didnt like the way she acted in front of senior idols, because it was disrespectul in a culture where is a high sigh of respectfull behavior. Its not that I hate her for that its just something I was a little irriteded by especialy as someone who ults ASTRO who still do a 90° bow to their seniors when they are in buisness since 2016. However hating on her for how she ate the strawberry? Like come on.

Teenagers likes to trash on anything they cannot achieve, a lot of young girls displaying rude behavior towards people with pretty privilege can be shown as an example. Wonyoung is a successful idol who also happened to be the epitome of Korean beauty standard, which gave her even more opportunities and increased her success further. Now imagine you are a teenager who can be easily influenced, and you see an idol with a perfect career and perfect image. It is clear that you won't be able to as successful as or beautiful as her no matter what. So what will you do? You will either try to be like that perfect idol as possible which can be shown as the reason for whole Wonyoungism trend. Or you will start to hate that idol and try to cling on and point the finger to their every "flaw" so you can validate yourself.

I also think they switched up on her so fast, is because when she was in IZ*ONE she obviously got Center, and got #1 in Produce just at 14 years old, and was extremely pretty and popular. As soon as she redebuted into IVE, with all these ridicioulous scandals they created her to be a villain, was an exuse to let out the jealousy they felt for her back when she was in IZ*ONE.

She actually did get a bunch of hate during Izone. Mainly the whole "Sakura should have been P1 it's rigged" and the "Wonyoung pushed Sakura" debacle. But definitely no where near the amount of hates she gets now. I think a big reason for this change is because she's "too perfect" now or no longer as "goofy" as she was in Izone. Which is so dumb because 1. She's older so of course she's going to act more mature, 2. With the amount of hate she gets that perfect persona is the only thing shielding her and 3. I’d say in addition to all the reasons you mentioned, one of the biggest reasons why she’s got a target on her back ever since she redebuted in IVE is because IVE is a lot more mainstream than IZ*ONE was. And you know… bigger audience means you get exposed to more toxic people. I just don’t understand those people.

Tbh it's because of the initial hate that I started to pay attention to her. I watched all of P48 as it was airing but she never caught my eye. Seeing her get centre in the final over Sakura was a suprise. During izone I still wasn't paying much attention to her and found out a whole year later that she redebuted in IVE. As I've paid more attention she really is one of the few idols in the current gen that takes their job seriously. The only thing I disagree with is that earlier in IVEs schedules she really did stand out stylist wise so I can see where the favouritism comments came from.

ultimately it just comes down to jealousy, everytime it's just jealousy whether it be jealousy over her stunning visuals, jealousy over her favouritism, or jealousy over her interactions with other idols. teenage through to young adult years are the most jealous years in our lives as we are so consumed with other people's opinions and material things that whenever we see anyone (e.g. wonyoung) with something we want (e.g. looks, talent, male attention) we get angry over the fact that it isn't us. this is why people are finding any excuse to hate on her because they know that their hatred rooted in jealousy is unreasonable so they desperately try to find any excuse to make their hatred rational and they try their hardest to make wonyoung seem like a bad person solely so they can feel better about themselves. little do they know, wonyoung is never gonna be brought down and all that they're doing is making their own lives miserable by centering their lives and thoughts around their hatred and jealousy.

This is Kpop's finest example of how insecure the community is. I absolutely LOVE Wonyoung not only for her personality but mostly because of her aura and confidence. She is the best example of a person who learned self-love. Think about it, she debuted at 14 years old in such a toxic industry- and there's no doubt just like other idols, she went through a lot at such a young age, but many are choosing to target her. Why so? Projection. According to psychology, projection is when a person's inner emotions are placed onto another source as a defense mechanism, and within the community, this is SUPER common. Because of how toxic beauty standards have become today, many stans who are often younger and unfortunately still in their years of development are being influenced into hating themselves because they don't look or act like the people on their screen. Wonyoung's confidence as the woman she is APPEALS to people, and stans are insecure because she learned to be that best version of herself that those stans haven't become themselves. They're afraid to see someone else happy because they aren't happy with themselves. I never got into izone, so that was pretty interesting to watch from the outside as they disbanded and redebuts started coming out. IVE ended up being my favorite to come out of that, but the first member to catch my eye was Liz. The blonde hair looked so stunning on her and her voice is so beautiful. I didnt really notice Wonyoung and I was confused why everyone was talking about her, but getting familiar with the group, shes right behind Liz in line for my heart. Her voice is so beautiful, she is so ridiculously beautiful, and shes amazing at everything she does... no wonder all the envious weirdos are obsessed with her

Personally, my theory for the Wonyoung hate is that coupled with the fact that she is talented, beautiful, extremely rich - she simple just lets herself be her authentic self. I've seen this alot in real life where sometimes people restrict themselves to what they "should be" so when they see someone who goes beyond that limit they hold for themelves and they see someone being their authentic selves, it triggers them. They hate it because they're jealous of how she is and how she can let herself just be free. I had a friend once that was envious of Wonyoung and hated her because she was so pretty and she was the IT girl. She would tell me how her long-distance friend and her would call each other and hate wonyoung together... and there's wasn't any shame to it. That same friend also gave me a lot of pushback because I changed quite a bit from my high school self. I was quite rough and tough, impulsive and rude and immature when I was 15-17 (duh!) but when I became 18/19, something extremely big happened and I didn't like the way I was anymore. So I changed myself to fit more to what I do like and that created a lot of pushback from this person because she couldn’t believe I wasn’t the same. And moreover, she would keep trying to neg me and trigger me by bringing up the way I used to be and how I said something one time when I was younger. She was also very rude to me and would hold things over my head, it was toxic for me because she essentially did not celebrate my growth and that I was healing from my childhood trauma and letting me be free. I can't chalk it off to anything but envy that I changed and she was still the same. I think the same applies to her relationship with Wonyoung - all haters relationship with Wonyoung. She represents to them something they "can never achieve" while idol life is not ideal, her grace and elegance is very much so achievable and should be inspiring to others. but they're the ones restricting themselves.

I only know a few IVE songs, Wonyoung seems sweet if anything. I think that people often speak negatively because of "wonyoungism" trends but Wonyoung didn't have anything to do with the trend. I see comments about her weight and as someone diagnosed with an ED I just feel so sad. Whether she has a problem or not the comments aren't helping her. I have seen videos commenting on it and picking apart everything she says and from what I've seen she never actively promoted dieting of any kind. I think she even advised people not to. I genuinely feel bad for her. I feel like she is getting the same hate Jennie used to get and as a Blink I saw how messy it was. Wonyoung herself doesn't control stage outfits, it's the stylist/company. That said, I don't feel like having her in outfits that fuel the favoritism allegations are helpful to Wonyoung. I think the company should do a better job at handling her hate comments. YG already did that to Jennie and I just hope history doesn't repeat itself.

When she debuted in IVE, she got way more prettier and popular because she was a former IZ*ONE member, but now that she’s so popular now, people think that she doesn’t deserve her popularity and fame, because she wasn’t as “self-made” as the other members. They loved wonyoung in iz*one when she was a rookie and maknae, but now that she’s in IVE, she’s now a professional, which wasn’t the reason most wonyoung post-IVE stans liked her, and they felt threatened by new wonyoung stans, so to stand out, they started hating on her

I like Wonyoung, she hasn’t really done anything for me to dislike about her. Majority of the posts I see of her are either edited or taken out of context. Very rarely will I agree with the critiques. I hate hate trains in general, because if you look at some peoples accounts they’re either following that idol/group or admits they joined the hate train to not get attacked.

I confess... I have been a wonyoung disliker. tbh I'm not much involved in scandals and wider fandom, so I've had no part in any hate trains, and I think that's a terrible thing to bash an idol so widely. but I was a big fan of iz*one, and especially as someone who values an idol's vocals very highly, over visuals/general audience appeal, I had some... reservations about the group's lineup (even before it was revealed to be rigged). I disliked wonyoung for taking first place when she was 1. very young at the time and 2. was quite vocally underdeveloped especially compared to other members in the group (and I just personally really didn't like her high pitched, nasal tone). I think survival shows often end up breeding resentment like that, because there's only so many spots in a group and who you think are the "best" contestants won't always get in. at this point I don't pay much attention to wonyoung anymore, but I know she's worked incredibly hard and improved since then, she absolutely deserves the positive attention she receives and her position as center/face of ive.

I have to admit the wonyoung hate train was so much that at some point I started unconsciously seeing her in a bad light. I got so used to always hearing bad stuff ab her that there wasn't really anything positive I saw her for. It wasn't until one clip of her livestream I watched and she said something really funny and I thought "she's annoying but she's funny" then a few moments later I asked myself "wait, why exactly is she annoying" and I realized there wasn't really anything wrong with her and she hasn't done anything wrong. I took time to watch more videos of her and she's actually pretty cool. It's scary how clouded your mind can be from something as simple as random people's words. For months i just saw her as annoying and I didn't realize what I was doing at all

People hate to see pretty girls winning. (Jennie, Wonyoung, Yuna and so on.)

i stan enhypen and ive it pisses me off when engenes try to call wonyoung a pick me because shes friends w sunghoon like idols are friends with eachother and it doesnt mean theyre dating and if they are, what does it mean to you? you were never gonna date your favourite male idol and you should stop acting like you own them. couldn't agree more with 6:15 honestly, how weird does one have to be to hate on another individual for singing and dancing with another person? I've always found jealous K-pop stans weird. I also don't get the logic they go by. Because leaving malicious comments on Wonyoung's posts isn't gonna make Sunghoon choose them 😭

She's pretty, young, famous and rich. Can dance and sing ok/well. People don't believe that someone can have all of this and not being a terrible person, like, she "need to" have some defect, and people go crazy looking for this in everything she does. Also, her image is everywhere, so I think people get sick of this, or salt because they want someone else in her spot. Basically, people can't deal with young woman being successful

Me & everyone I know do not eat strawberry with two hands, even in front of camera. I have seen very beautiful female idols like newgeans eating without exaggeration. It is not just jealousy. People like spontaneity.
