Mr.Color Leveling Thinner is so far the best over all I've tried in 50+ years of building. Home store thinners I find are too "hot" for the plastic and paint, good for clean up though. Some airbrushes have internal seals that are not compatable with Laq and poly based paints, they can distroy internal seals pretty fast ! Most budjet airbrushes don't have the right seals. For the amount you use in painting, the price of the kit ( $$$$$$$$$$ ), your bench time, it's worth the extra money just to use the recomended thinner in the long run. Keep up great work on you channel ,good luck !!!! Cheers.

I have seen where someone takes the little bottles of Testors paint, and mixes it with lacquer thinner 1 to 1, and spray it with a .5 needle and get a great paint job!

Try the Galleria Swallowtail. I don't have any issues spraying any type of paint. I got mine for about $100. It came with 3 different needle sizes. Well worth the money. They also have a fan nozzle, that's is a game changer.

Woah! Definitely going to check it out. That's a great price too! I've had my eye on the Iwata sold in Hobby Lobby, with the trigger. Those jokers won't drop the price below $145 lol

Thank you for the heads up on the Gaahleri airbrush. I have that airbrush, but haven't ran any paint through it. Now I know not to run acrylics through it. Thanks again.

Blue tack around the nozzle and a bending drinking straw works for me. Ive tried drilling a hole but it makes a mess also

A good mounting putty to use for decanting is Gorilla Mounting Putty.

Awesome video Ed! The GHAD-39 with the 0.5mm needle is my work horse lol, I dont spray many acrylics really except for Vallejo for the most part. The test parts and Camaro body look sweet cleared man! Im sure looks even better in person! Im gona try that Thinner out man!

Thanks Manny. This is just a cheap hack for rattle can paint with 1K clear from DupliColor. I'm not done with the Mr. Hobby. I'm going to order some 2k clear and see how it handles it. It might just be my airbrush, but it doesn't like acrylics at all.

Hey, Ed! Those tests look good! I use Mr. Hobby Leveling Thinner when I shoot 2k clear, and my results have been pretty consistent. The clear-to-activator has a 4:1 ratio, and I’ll add 1-1.5 parts Mr. Hobby as a reducer. I'll have to give that Rust-o-leum a try and see how much it cuts down the texture.
@janvanrenselaar5998

The cheaper laquer paint will make the 2K clear hotter. It will destroy your decals when you don.t lay down 2 thinn mist coats as a protection layer. Better spend a bit on Mr Hobby Leveling thinner for thinking the 2K. And use the cheaper laquer thinner to clean the airbrush. On that way you get good results,and a clean A-B. And use a shot of acetone after cleaning. The Gaahleri can handle that.
@oneteamgarage
@oneteamgarage 7 месяцев назад
This thinner is only for the automotive 1K clear I decant from the rattle can. I'm saving the Mr. Hobby for when I order the 2K clear
@janvanrenselaar5998

@@oneteamgarage OK right on. And when you use Zero Diamond 2K,also at least 1 mist coat. MIPO is a automotive 2K brand that gives very good results. Cheaper,but only when you use 1.5 liter every 18 months. When you use less the big Zero package is good for about 15-20 car body,s in 1-24 scale.

Normally when you decant paint, it doesn't need to be thinned. You decant it, let it sit a little while to gas out, then spray it. I've never thinned decanted paint no matter what brand or type of paint. I've never decanted clear if I bought it in a can. I've used Testor's Extreme lacquer, Tamiya, Raptor 1k, Upol 1k etc right from the can, whether I airbrushed the color coats or not. Now, I've also used cheap Kleen Strip lacquer thinner for years with no issues and even reduced 2k clear with it despite 1 or 2 people saying not to. I've never had poor results doing it. With that said, I've never used Mr. Hobby leveling thinner in 2k clear to reduce it. I think the thing here is the issue of thinning rattle can clear here..... You're doing something you don't generally see. I'm not saying you're doing it wrong, it's just I don't see many having to thin decanted paint that often, especially clear.

It definitely helps to stretch the paint. I've sprayed it without thinning it, but I always end up with more orange peel. I'm still getting the hang of the airbrush as well. A few times I've been like what am I doing? I had the rattle can mastered with my wet sanding. Now I'm complicating my life with an airbrush lol. I'll figure it out eventually. Thank you for the feedback, greatly appreciated.

You may need to add more retarder to slow down the drying time on the acrylic paint. I use my GHAD-39 with acrylics all the time and I don'r have to clean my brush until I get done for the day. I do a quick clean between paints and do a deep clean when I'm done for the day... Sure I get tip drying once in a while but the retarder helps to slow down the paint from drying to fast. You can also add more Flow Improver, that helps also...That is just the way Acrylic paint is, you can slow it the dry tip issue down but you can not stop it all together. It even happens with Enamel and Lacquer paint... Lol You have to watch how much of the Rust o lacquer thinner you use, it is a "Hot" thinner it will melt some plastic and eat through the primer. Just be careful Ed... It is great for enamel's and lacquer's for sure. I don't de-can rattle can paint I make a mess of it. The GHAD-39 will spray any thing and does it well as long as the paint is thinned close to right... Lol You have to learn the feel of the paint and mixture of the thinning process to get a great paint job... 😁 Great video Ed... 👍 LLAP 🖖

Very true Bruce. I'm missing retarder and the easy flow you told me about. I looked for some at this model car show I went to, but no one had any. That was surprising. It was a pretty big show.

@@oneteamgarage It's all good Ed. Lol I just started adding the Retarder and Flow improver last year and 1/2 or so ago. I have found the retarder is a key thing to have. Some time I just add more Quick Shine... Lol It is all try and see what works and write it down. FolkArt and Apple Barrel are not the same either so it is all in adjusting the mixture because the acrylics are all a bit different. 😁 That is strange that a Show would not have retarder but there again I have never been to one... LLAP 🖖

For water based acrylics try adding some retarder to the paint and use airbrush thinner. Not water.
@Aces_Eights_Scale_Vision
@Aces_Eights_Scale_Vision 7 месяцев назад
There is a better product if you can find it. Sunnyside makes a retarder that when mixed with their lacquer thinner is pretty much on par with Mr. Leveling Thinner. That said, one of the unique uses for Mr. Color Leveling Thinner is you can use it alone as a "kiss" coat to gloss up you color or Mr. Color Clear coat and colors while they are still wet. It noticeably improves the gloss. It's mild enough it will not attack plastic usually as well. Compatible with lacquers, enamels and YES even Tamiya Acrylics.
