Ambient Photonics are creating dye-sensitised solar cells (DSSCs) with unmatched performance in low light and indoor conditions. Could we see these on mainstream devices in the near future?

The big reasons amorphous silicone works great indoors is that it has a higher band-gap better optimized for the visible spectrum (vs the solar spectrum) and they have very low leakage currents. Low-leakage crystalline solar cells (aka large format photo-diodes) produce good power indoors, but the lower band-gap means output voltage stays low unless they get significant IR from low efficiency or natural lighting. Outdoors, leakage currents don't matter much so cells are instead optimized for cost and yield.

Thanks for this insight, I think this answers @calebplumleeoutdoors ' question as well.

Curious if this is such a revolutionary change, why wouldn't they be targeting/replacing standard solar panels as well... and targeting far northern/southern latitude solar arrays as well as cloudy locations

Simple, they're not able to fabricate it large enough reliably

I would suspect that the technology isn't able to handle "daytime" temperatures. Indoors, you don't expect 120+F temperatures on a regular basis. Office buildings with wireless keyboards & mice, would very much benefit from this technology. Imagine buying a wireless mouse (as a company) and NEVER having to replace the battery for it. I'd like to see these panels sold with "extension cords" - so you could place a small postage-stamp-sized panel on an existing 'wireless' keyboard, connected to a rechargeable battery.

The problem is not the generation, but the storage. A remote needs a spike of power, to send the signal a d this has to be provided by some form of storage. Cheap storage doesn't last long or is voluminous🤗

What, like two AAA batteries? The two AAA batteries in my PC keyboard last me about a YEAR. Is that long enough?

@@johnthomas338 The power generation from the proposed solar cell is not enough to charge a AAA and there is not one rechargeable AAA, that won't leak after a few years. F, dude. Missed the topic by a mile🙄

Alkaline batteries are too lucrative a scam to be going anywhere soon. Wireless keyboards, mice and remotes should already be using rechargeable cells or at least designed with them in mind but they're still invariably designed to not only use alkaline cells, but to only use about a third of their capacity before they cut out.

"more sustainable materials"?....than silicon? thats like one of the most sustainable materials in existence...... its the main ingredient in sand.... PS.... i dont think there is a need for controllers to be "sleek and slender".... the should be ergonomic.....
