Why Trunks & Goten Are FAILED CHARACTERS!!

It’s just sad how we went from early Buu Saga where Goku said “These boys are the only hope we have of stopping Majin Buu.” To now every time a major threat shows up, the adults tell them to stay home. I’m surprised Piccolo or Gohan didn’t tell them to leave the first second they showed up to fight Cell MAX.

Gotenks. That’s the real problem. He worsen the problems he could have solved. He inherits both of his fathers weaknesses.

Honestly, the main problem with Goten and Trunks is that it's too little too late. They had some shine in the Buu Saga, but after that, GT and Super showed no interest in them, so they became nothing characters. On top of that, in Super's case with the 12 universes, there are just more interesting things out there that overshadow them even more. Like Universe 6 with Hit and Cabba.

I feel like Goten was there just for a friend/ rival for trunks. I think only way for them to be relevant is to give them their own mini series. Idk, maybe throw them in an alternate timeline or world (Isekai) where they can shine

Unfortunately, Super had a chance to make Goten and Trunks intresting and show that hey have as much potential as Goku claimed during the Buu Saga. Granted, they had the power to show that they can do damage, but if they arent allowed to interact with the main characters to stop the bad guys, then their delivery of damage is wasted.

Another point with Gotenks is their over reliance on him. It's like why should they train seriously when all they have to do is fuse to get that great power boost.

Trunks is a less compelling, less interesting, less mysterious, less cool, less powerful, and less developed version of another character who came along first - that being himself from an alternate timeline. It's like being compared to a superior twin brother: It isn't fair, but it's reality... Meanwhile Goten offers nothing Goku and Gohan haven't offered individually, and him and Trunks have failed to come into their own, and be relevant outside of those they're associated with... So, oof...

Gohan is the 🐐 of hybrids.

To make a long story short. Both characters don't offer anything new and lack involvement in future plots. Plus, Trunks and Gotent aren't good fighters like Gohan, Future Trunks, and so on. Lastly, the fusion dance has done more harm than good for the characters.

100% Agree with this video, you basically broke down the entirety of these 2 characters up until this point. Which is why I'm hoping that the DBS manga and eventually the anime can do them some justice. Build around them Present day Trunks should be the complete opposite of Future Trunks, he has the timeline that Future Trunks wanted but isn't grateful for it to a certain degree because the majority of crisis that come to earth are handled by his father, Goku or Gohan and Piccolo. He lives in the shadow of his parents, with his father being one of the strongest beings in the universe and his mother being the most wealthy woman alive, Present Day Trunks probably struggles to find his own identity. Bulma is going to want Trunks to run capsule corp or at least be a part of it some day and Vegeta will want him to surpass him some day so he can pass on the title of being the prince of all saiyans. Trunks most likely acts rebellious due to the expectations that have been placed upon him by his parents. Being charismatic and a bit older Trunks easily talks Goten into joining his rebellious acts. Goten can't fully relate but he too struggles with identity but isn't bothered by it. Goten is basically what Goku would've been like if he grew up with family, he's care free like Goku but doesn't share the same passion for fighting as Goku. He spent most of his time being raised by his old brother and Chi-Chi. Spending time with Gohan and Trunks definitely makes Goten smart but mostly slow minded most of the time. If I were to simplify these characters it would be something like this. Trunks is the famous rich kid that acts out being due being privileged and Goten is a free spirit hippie that spends most of his time either with his friends or laying around. What I will say is that these two are definitely brothers, if Goku and Vegeta are rivals then Goten and Trunks are brothers.

The sad truth is that Goten and Trunks are failed characters in dragonball because they just aren't properly utilized in the series. They show that they have more potential than even Gohan, and even came close to defeating Majin Buu as Gotenks, but Goten and Trunks fall short and continue to fall short as the series progresses. Even though they are extremely powerful, they aren't allowed to fight to help save the earth, they aren't properly trained to improve, they constantly lose against major threats even as Gotenks, and they aren't even considered by the main cast themselves.

3:19 not to mention Future Trunks was there to face antagonists in movies such as Bojack & his crew, Broly, Super Android 13/other androids, hatchiyack/evil spirit past villains, etc so he gets extra nostalgia points. He's such a popular/fan favorite character they just had to bring him back in Dragon Ball Super.

Even if they both got their own movie where they fuse into Gotenks and go Super Saiyan Blue 3, I don’t think people would lose their shit over it.

Long story short: they are replacement characters, fill-ins. Present Trunks will never live up to Future Trunks, and Goten was just a Goku clone and a child stand-in when Gohan grew up post Cell timeskip.

Imagine if they took the lead like Gon and Killua after the buu saga

They aren't weak, they are weak to current villains. But for their age they are far stronger than SsJ future trunks, SsJ Vegeta, SsJ Goku..etc From the cell saga. Based on their fight vs cell Jr, where they are taken on several cell jr's at once. Not to mention 18 worried to fight them and her look by present trunks Going nice against her with his attack. The kids knew she was stronger than their parents in the past, yet, they still didn't want to fired a strong blast against her.

Trunks and Goten being knock off Saiya-Men now isn't gonna help take them out of the shadow of Gohan

Not even little time to be trained by their parents for a little bit and not even a single power up, while Picoro and Gohan get their third power up out of nowhere.

Goten could in theory hook up with a universe 6 saiyan someday and their kid would be the first ever quarter-human saiyan, how strong would they be? We have theories about what the dilution of the saiyan genes can do, but what about the dilution of the human gene?

I promise I did not vote goten to spite anyone. I agree that goten has no character, he is a shell of a character that genuinely could have been really cool. I voted goten because I still feel like he could become something cool. (As unlikely as it is) but I still have some hope for him

It’s not too late to develop them though. The filler arc could give them distinct personalities, nice character development, unique characteristics. Like what they did in Super Hero, they can put Goku and Vegeta and even Gohan out of commission, to be able to have them fight. The perfect situation would be Goku and Vegeta training Broly to control his power, having segments of that just like the movie, which would also give Broly some character development and cool character interactions. Additionally, Goku and Vegeta could start training them. As Beast Gohan is likely an exclusive form, maybe training them and giving them god ki could have them unlock new forms of their own, that are powerful and put them on par with the main cast.

Goten and Trunks fight in the tournament was one of my favorites in the series. But yeah at this point with all the power creep they’ve been left on the back burner for too long to be relevant to the actual plot.

I understand why gt didn't develop Goten and trunks but super could have sent Goten to another universe like universe 6 kill two birds with one stone and have his personality and outfit change as well has give him his tail back also some moves of his own to make him stand out more instead of just changing his hair they could have left it the same but change up the importance part and give him ssj4 also have trunks train along side Gohan and give him some of his future selfs moves as well as a sword

Honestly, it all went down hill when they brought back Goku in the Buu saga. There's nothing for Gohan to do, and Ssj3 Gotenks is weaker than Krillin training for TOP. Had Goku stayed dead, Gohan and Vegeta would have to stop Buu. Vegeta could become Goten's mentor just as Piccolo was for Gohan. And Gohan would mentor Trunks because he befriended original timeline Trunks. I'm not a writer, but that's how I would have gone about it.

I want a story arc where they learn to function w/o each other. They travel to different parts of the planet to get an education, in both martial arts, academics & more. Ex. Goten trains under Tien & Yajirobe since he already knows the Kamehameha, while Trunks trains under Krillin & Yamcha, due to their ties with Bulma & his future self, via 18, respectively. It ends with them clashing as swordsmen & Martial artists, with both using technology enhanced Ki technique & magic.

I think a cool idea that would help Goten and Trunks would be having them join Goku and Vegeta to Universe 6, it would give Goten and Trunks to possibly train with people more their level and give a reason to boost them up a little

I think the only way for these two to shine is to have it similar to the android future trunks is from where they're the strongest of the last surviving from some bigger threat but that would take making them the main characters which Ik would never happen

What is holding Goten and Trunks back the most is their unlikable personalities. Trunks is nothing but a spoiled brat and Goten is a whiney moron. Putting them together brings out the worst in both of them but, as you pointed out, they are too weak to do anything on their own. They should have sent present Trunks off with Future Mai and kept the franchise’s best character in the present

At least with Present Trunks, there's a reason for him to exist, and they tried giving him stuff to do. But with Goten, he barely does anything in major fights, has nothing that makes him stand out and is basically a sidekick to his antics with Trunks, it makes you wonder why Toriyama even bother creating him since he has nothing to offer as a character.

Honestly I think present Trunk's living with Vegeta impacted his personality and overall attitude. I feel like present Trunks is a lot more conceited compared to future trunks who initially struggled to believe in himself. I feel like present Trunks picked up a bit of Vegeta's haughty tendencies from training with him. Future Trunks (growing up) never had a relationship with Vegeta and relied on Gohan to learn how to fight.

At first when I saw the poll I did want to vote goten to spite Qaaman but I chose present trunks because I thought of the junior tournament they had together and wanted to see if those two if given the choice to take over for their fathers would they do it or not. I have always felt that the cast needed to permanently die off eventually so goten and trunks can grow into good characters and take the mantle of the franchise over from goku and vegeta. That would be the only way that would work out for those two. If they are just content with keeping them as filler or comedy characters ok I guess... But I was hoping to see more from those two.

Personally Gohan always impressed me both present and future. Future Trunks for me is the coolest Human-Saiyan hybrid while present Trunks and Goten are nothing to me. I never liked them or cared for them they were simply in the background for a comic relief purpose. They don't have their fathers love for fighting or Gohan's brain and huevos which he developed over time but still. They also don't have the real passion for doing things like Future Trunks has. They could have been good if they were given the best of every role model in their family but they were written bad.

Trunks and Goten coulve been the evolution of the saiyan duo tandem like Goku and Vegeta was. First, they were fighting S Class villains since childhood, and learned SSJ and Fusion much earlier. What i feel was missing about them was an established "Frenemy" angle... it couldve been introduced in the Goku Black Arc.. to which, they couldve just made Goku black Goten instead. where Future Trunks would be fighting his childhood friend and have the dillema of killing him to save the future... Its no different than Vegeta turing to Majin Vegeta and Baby Vegeta There was also one movie (yes, i know its non-canon), that explored Kid Trunks getting his Sword and also gave him some sort of maturity over matters.. this couldve been a great way to transition trunks from being the overconfident brat to one of the most matured characters in the franchise. not to mention having the potential of Gohan training kid trunks with the Kai's and establishing the Zamasu rivalry early on Goten adventure could also be with Cheelai and Broly. much like how Goku was with Bulma and Yamcha.

You aren't wrong Qaaman, but regardless, I still believe in their potential. The main problem is that creativity is dying breed over there and can't utilize what they can bring to the table that's unique. I'm not saying I like the both of them for a particularly special reason other than their personalities. It's unfortunate that my belief has only been satisfied by fan mangas, like with the human characters, but they just speak to how much is left within them. I'm always rooting for them. These 2 founded a sword school together, I wanna see them on their journeys to mastering the 2 types of swordsmanship they learned. How did they disciplined themselves to master it? How did they learn? Dragon ball deliverance gives them great characterization, among other mangas like the one where Gohan lost to cell and Goten took up the mantle for earth's protector. So no matter how insulted, disrespected and wasted these 2 become, I'll still believe in them.

I love trunks and Goten! They bring their own unique style to the series. They are the best friend duo and they were meant to connect with children watching dbz. One goku grown up that’s y they made Gohan (for a new generation to connect with). Then Gohan grow up so enters Goten and trunks. I do wish they were in the tournament of power but whatever. Also in terms of fusion being a handicap, I disagree on that. This gives them the ability to unlock so many first nd truly make it their own
