I get what your saying but isn't the boost pressure reading combined with rpm and airflow used by the ECU's calculations to derive the generated torque achieved. Therefore if you are falsifying the boost level you are essentially reducing the calculated torque and hence the ECU will keep trying to achieve its target torque. So it won't be capped by the torque limit like you state in the video because boost is used in that calculation.
Unfortunately not, ecu’s have Torque limiters that don’t change and once this limit is hit irrespective of anything else it will back boost fuel everything off to stay under the torque limit so no calculation will change this, stock torque limit hit in the ecu no more power no matter what you do👍
MAX TUNE ECU doesn't measure torque. If it has a torque limit, as many torque based calibrations do, it's not a figure that is measured by any single sensor or input. I stand by my original comment that it's derived by a calculation of multiple inputs. Which with tuning boxes are being falsified.
So heres my take, I've been running a DTUK tunning box for 5 years, my first car it was in was a 2015 1.8 seat leon FR 180bhp with the box and on the Dyno it came in at 252bph 302nm. It ran great did exactly what I paid for. Now move onto my next car and I've had problems, so I sent the box off and paid £99 for a re-tune to my new car Seat cupra st 280, 280 bph 350nm, the problem I'm having now is explained very well in this video, because the car is already very high spec in terms of a daily, its losing all power and going into limp mode when giving it some whelly, take the box out or turn it off and the problem goes away. So had to do some digging I've had the clutch checked injectors everything you can think of has been checked and it's all 100% working as intended, someone suggested that I was hitting the cars torque limiter and to be honest that's the only reason we can find that the cars going limp and losing all power. So I'm currently looking for a map and won't be buying any form of box I will take it to a map place and get it done right.
This video is really good, would be good to also mention other remap benefits. E.g control of timing, fuelling, safety maps, boots controls, smoother power delivery, reduce turbo lag etc
Anyone who buys running boxes knows that they send under boost to the ECU. However, the whole there is a torque limiter, the limit can’t be reached under stock. So when they claim higher torque it’s because there is plenty of room for additional torque.
Very good confirmed exactly what I was thinking, I have been in proses of getting a tunning box but was thinking no I'll go for remap instead it's the right & proper way & it is getting it done this week
Good explanation of tuning boxes,I'm going in for a remap next week (aginst the advice of the tuner who's doing it😂) it's a high mileage 2005 Volvo s60 diesel 163bhp, he said if it cant be tuned without putting a communication wire on the PCB he wont do it because of the age of the ECU,there is a only one tuning box he'll use but it's more expensive than a remap.
I’ve got a 2020 ranger and they can’t remap it. So, I bought a power box and it does increase the power but I have had issues with smooth running particularly when I put my foot down. Reality is I am presently in two minds to send it back if they can’t solve the issues
What are your thoughts on the remaps that come to your home and then load a file onto your ECU, are they the same as a tuning box? Or do they actually do what they say they do?
Yep I had the same. on torque, 3000 CRD V6 engine, put one of these stupid boxes on, slam your foot down, box tried to push the ECU, all I got was, it when to rocket off, it acted like a Kangaroo up the road. 0.3 seconds feeling like I have 500 BHP, and next thing down to about 200BHP or complete power cut, like limp mode.. felt like driving a car under max power, and also banging your foot, hard on the brakes. I reckon it was the ECU cutting off the power, for about 0.5 seconds to pull the engine back in line.
Very unprofessional if I’m honest, your tuning box sounds good ,however if you need to sell it by naming and slagging off your competitors on RU-vid you obviously don’t have the confidence in it yourself. Does your box increase the ecu count so the Manufacturers can tell it’s been “altered”? As this is a main reason why people use the plug in tuning boxes and don’t have a map to start with.
Nick hi, this is not unprofessional it's literally explaining how plug in tuning boxes work from the major manufacturers of these boxes as most people dont know how they work they are not our competition in anyway as #truetune is in a different league! Yes the CVN (calibration verification number) is corrected when the car is put back to stock so no one could tell it had been tuned or had any software changed. SA Tuning Dispite the CVN stuff. Simple question: can the maintenance at the dealer tell if the ecu has been rewritten at some point? I have been in the same impression that it is a read only field that cannot be altered.

I get what you are saying and it makes sense but remapping a car invalidates the manufacturer’s warranty and if a M5 engine goes pop, I believe Munich would get involved and investigate the ecu to check it it has been remapped or not.
I agree about remap vs tuning box but not about Pedal box! Pedal box is really great and you choose any response you like after testing so many(18 available) different “maps” ... I have remap but as i said for throttle response the way is the pedal box for sure!!! ✌🏼✌🏼
So much emphasis on whether you are doing it inside the car or out in the cold and rain under the bonnet, really? Is that one of the most important deciding factors? Who cares? Should have just stuck to the facts. Rest of it makes sense though, was wondering what the downsides to a tuning box were as they all claim the same gains as remaps with extra flexibility and less cost. I wouldn't really care about doing a 20 minute job under the bonnet connecting a couple of plugs together though, just shows clear bias

Ive just got an 2004 a3 2.0 tdi its done 170k. I want to just make it a beast and when it breaks il get another one and change the parts over. Im in my 30s now and ive had alot of cars and bikes ive always wanted a fast and inconvenient unreliable diesel boost machine that i can nurse around. I have good mechanical skills and i used to be a sheet metal fabricator so i can take on basic work to the car. But what should i be concentrating on to just get the most short lived fun outa this car?
I'm from the old school. If want a fast car buy a fast car. I've worked for car manufacturers in testing engines they set the calibration for a reason. Speed comfort reliability economy.
Tell me if I understand him correctly: Tuning box lies to the ECU in two parameters: boost pressure and fuel pressure. It's like a kid changing his scorecard from B to A before giving to mom. A complete remap let the ECU lie to itself all the way. Now even as the scorecard shows C, mom still exclaims: "Amazing!"
I very nearly missed the bit at the end regarding pedal box boxes! I have an A6 C7 BiTDI with a horrible lag on initial takeoff. I have literally floored it and junctions and just sat there for a couple of seconds - I would go so far as saying it's lethal! A sub 6 sec car that seems to have a 2~3 second delay? Anyway, I had been advised that the pedal box box would overcome this issue - seeing this video, I'm not convinced. Thank you.
I’ve always and have always remapped my cars properly..ie live map on rolling road 👍🏼 But what’s making me chuckle with this Vid and the Darkside one there both slagging the tuning box but are both plugging there own tuning box! Finding it a little contradicting
Hi you seem to have missed the point truetune is not and nothing like a tuning box, we do not falsify signals to the ECU like tuning boxes truetune is the tool used to actually write modified software to the the car the truetune it’s self does not tune the car our modifies software does, a tuning box does not write software to the ECU just sends false signals to the ECU, 2 very different things the tuning box is awe full truetune writing fully modified software to the car is not👍
Mapping the engine leaves a footprint, clear for the car manufacturer to see. A tuning box doesn't. Mine is absolutely excellent. More power when it's needed and way better fuel economy.
Jim Walker this is not actually true returning a car back to stock correctly and correcting the CVN numbers properly leaves no footprint at all and undetectable by the manufacture, also on a car that’s 3 years old it’s not that much of a big deal as no warranty anyway!!
@@damiendegrasse Most later models you have to open the sealed ECU to beable solder a link to bypass VW anti tamper map..Plus you have to cut off the anti tamper bolts holding the ECU so would be detected in seconds by VW + in an acident by the insurance companies examiner.
Well my Racechip made my Golf TDI a completely different car, is faster, more responsive and a lot of fun. It also gives me like 10% more mpg's and the car runs flawlessly.
This may be the case but is it anywhere near the figures quoted and how much pressure is being put on the injectors? No body knows it’s very eas to give diesel car 20-30 NM of torque which will make it feel quicker but know where near the drive or figures of a properly tuned car. Cheers 👍
i have Racechip on Ford Maverick, it claims 30hp/45torque gains. Dyno gave it 22HP/30torque gains, even at 2/3 of the advertised "potential max" stats its a great deal, and im not trying to blow out the engine with max tunes anyway. I almost expected its normal to be 70% of advertised anyway. You also have to use 93 octane to get peak performance with racechip.
I guarantee it isn't giving you 10% more mpg. The computer is assuming a standard engine because that's what it's seeing. You're using less throttle which would normally mean less fuel but your rail pressure is hiked so theres more fuel going in for a given injector duration that isnt being measured because the computer knows nothing about it.
Ok, ok, got it. Seriously, thanks for this video. I nearly did buy one but to be honest I felt something wasn't right about them and most "good" ones are £150 but I've been quoted £250 for a remap by a local tuning garage recommend to me by Jaguar Landrover....no brainer.
My racechip actually exceeded the stated figures, I have a kia pro ceed gt, at stock, 204hp, promised figures with racechip, 253hp, put it on a dyno, and I got 264hp

you ppl need realise that there are folks who have accualy had remapped cars and after getting a new car go to a box, do accualy feel the real difference. had a cupra 300 with hybrid turbo, dp and catback... new car now and a box, trust me i feel the fking differense.
I think most car guys are aware what these things actually do. I have a basic RaceChip on my Merc 2.2d. So it only fits to the fuel sensor. Ive had it on a medium setting for 95,000 miles now. Giving an extra 50nm ish of Torque and no real change on MPG. Ive averaged 63mpg over that 95k, and the unit only costs 110 quid. So for what they are, its a cheap bang for the buck. Even Mercedes actually sell them in the dealership. The BRABUS D2 and D3 tuning packs are just piggyback boxes that go over the Fuel, Cam, and Boost sensors. They cost just over 400 pounds, but its the same method.
I have put so much thought into it, but got discouraged by so much negativity. I am looking for some extra”help” so I’m definitely gonna get the small version and the XLR throttle device. Thanks man!
From your help and other reviews i am not purcgasing a TDI box. I got suspicious when i asked for a dyno chart and they said we dont fo that. Well how can you claim big gains without a dyno run.

The box works within the parameters set by the manufacturer, if the box tries to go outside of those parameters you will get an EML and or go into limp mode, I have run a box on an SLK and C-Class Coupe for well over a year and never had an issue with my Bluespark box. In fact it passed the MOT with box in place which indicates emissions are not effected. The Coupe is a 156 bhp 1800 cgi petrol Merc which was under powered, with the box car is now as it should have been, the difference is very noticeable. Just fit an egt gauge and monitor your temps in all conditions. Tuning boxes are the best. If temps start rising depending on conditions on your EGT gauge just back off the pedal it's that simple. I can tell you now that the gains are real from a tuning box, it ups boost and fuel pressure and it really is no harm, all turbo diesels spike naturally anyway. You hardly think a guy that can remap your car for 300euros in an hour has gone over every nook and cranny....they are both the same thing. A remap is no different
I put a DTUK box in my Audi and it put the car in limp mode(no boost) . They said it needs an update lol. Ridiculous. Go with ECU Tune with someone reputable
If you are thrashing the hell out of your car everyday a remap makes more sense. Those that do their research know this is what these boxes do and some are better than others and if you aren't fitting to a car that has an already maxed engine any gains are likely to be well within engine safety tolerances and limiters also the decent ones have a delay before they kick in so the engine is warmed up first.

Who cares: If your car is under warranty use a box only, if not then sure absolutely use a remap. at least with a box you can remove it and keep your warranty in tact lol.

I see your point and understand your concern; BUT, I also see the other side of your point-of-view; one also need to consider the flexibility of having the car at stock when having it serviced at the dealer, not to mention the various settings one can have the car in to suit one's driving needs. I am also sure, your company does not provide a list of parameters changed in the ECU to let the consumer know what is changed and by how much. When one cares about their customers, they would really inform them of ALL changes, Thanks!
Abe Ibrahim why would say that, and why would you be sure about things when you have never had a service from us, if someone asked we would be more than willing to explain as we have before every single change in the software to a customer should they need that, also #truetune can put your car back to 100% stock before you go to the dealer or when ever you want, plus flexibility you can have upto 10 maps for the car on #truetune so if that’s not flexible I don’t know what is, all done with a proper remap that achieves the real figures we quote with no false signals. Wow this guy really hates chips 😂 haha but yes with remap you get for example a a6 3.0 TDI 204ps quattro up to 270=290 PS stage 1 But quality chip boxes as DTE systems and racechip will maybe get you 20 to 50ps Price from 150 euro to 799euro The box is good for people how just wants the little extra and want to remove it without at trace when servicing the car or selling it. Let's say you have a a6 204ps quattro but you would rather have the a6 245ps quattro model then racechip/DTE would be a good choice. Chip pros: 1. Easy to install 2. Can be removed easily without trace. 3. It Don't push the car over it's safe limit 4. Cheaper than remap Cons: 1. not big in power as a remap 2. Can't be customised in different settings as remap can
Adis Mesanovic hi There, we don’t hate boxes but we hate how they are advertised and what they actually deliver (they are two massively different things) also a tuning box can’t account for AFR at all it has no possibility, also the the engine limiters are made higher even when its an engine protection limiter for the turbo for example the ecu can’t shut is down before its too late as the signal is incorrect from the boost sensor, also with #truetune you have a full remap without opening the bonnet! Through the obd port and you have the stock file and can return the car to complete original whenever and wherever you want or need to again without opening the bonnet, much easier than fitting a tuning box and it gets your the results quoted and all within the manufacture tolerances for the components. Pros for #truetune 1. You can return the car to stock within 5 mins without opening the bonnet 2. You get a ecu remap applied to the ecu 3. The remap is made to the cars software that #truetune reads from the ecu 4.£399 is cheaper than most Tuning boxes 5. You can have upto 10 files on #truetune and and have other features a tuning box could never give you. Cons for tuning box 1. Not all are easy to install and not as easy to remove especially if raining and you need to go under the bonnet to get dirty hands 2. False signals impede the ecu from seeing if there is an issue 3. The tuning box cannot see any AFR (air to fuel ratio) and therefore can run engines too lean and cause damage 4. They are more expensive for less BHP than #truetune or a remap. 5. They do not move Torque limiters and do not produce claimed figures So all in all #truetine is a far better offer and the best of both worlds, back to stock when you want same as a tuning box and better tuning because you get an actual remap!!
They also screw up your trip computer fuel consumption readings and make you think you are getting amazing fuel economy. The ECU cannot calculate the fuel consumption accurately any more. Massive con. Thanks for posting this.

@ADOLF SHITLER we are not selling a tuning box it's a personal OBD remapping tool that actually reads and writes software on and off the ECU. A tuning box plugs into sensors on the engine and #truetine is not that at all. Kind regards SA Tuning
The box relies on the parameters set by the manufactures, AFR is protected by knock sensors and wide band lambda, the box does not mess with the actual coding, seems safer all round to me.
@@robbob1693 tuning boxes simply aren't safer than a proper calibration. Yes, knock control can help makes sure the box isnt causing any knock issues and the wideband can keep trims in check but the ecu can only do so much and if the box is causing the knock control to constantly pull timing then damage will be done regardless. Implying that tricking the ecu is safer than having a qualified person alter the coding is moronic.

Hi this is very interesting I was looking at the dp chip based in Australia it all seemed awesome they said they don't actually go near the ecu but anyway I have a ranger raptor and I would love it to have a bit more grunt lets just say on set off and try and make that mpg spread out a bit more I no the trucks 2 tonne but surely it should get more than 26/27 mpg so could your set up do good for me my ranger raptor is on s 2019 plate i get very nervous to when it comes to altering engine power n that as this truck cost me 35k without the vat haha so it is scarey but it also defo needs that lift it is quite laggy to say the least on bottom end pulling out of junctions etc etc

The bluefin obd remap is also able too reinstall factory map but has been shown too still flag map coding in the ecu (for us lease car people and warranty). I forget the code now. What makes your product undetectable after a map and then back too stock map , Superchips bluefin have been around a long time? Thanks and good info on how the boxes work

Just watched your rant and looked on the True tune website. You don’t have a unit for Mini Cooper S R58, or even any LCI Mini with N18 motor, fitted with twin VANOS and Valvetronic. So that’s your product off the map, but Racetune have one. It senses turbo boost and absolute air pressure, and corrects the pulse width of injectors. There is no interface to the fuel pump (direct injection at 300 bar or so). If you don’t like cold weather, put a jacket on, don’t say the weather is a reason to fit your system. Disappointed because I would have done a remap rather than an add on.
Michael Lee please ask before an assumption is made, #truetune will work with r58 mini and lci mini, we may just not had time to list every single car going, the list is growing with cars we have added but we don’t have every single car yet and therefore yours may not be listed but is 100% compatible, “turbo boost pressure and absolute air pressure are the same thing and it’s detected by the MAP sensor and there is a fuel rail pressure sensor that controlls the fuel pressure by opening or closing the release valve and the device your talking about plugs into both those sensors,, yes we mention the weather as if it’s chucking it down and you need to take the car to the dealer, not everybody is young and fit so why should they not enjoy a tuned car, also people have bad backs problems bending over to get under the bonnet but with #truetune it all goes through the obd port don’t even need to open the bonnet!
The N18 has a boost sensor (4 pins), and a MAF (3 pins) both in the same air line after the turbo intercooler. I confirmed this in theBentley service manual and a parts supplier. The add on I got is not connected to the fuel pressure regulator at all. The R58 listed on your site stops at 2011 which is the last of the N14 units.
Neat explanation. Are there any tuning boxes out there that do more than just falsifying these two inputs to the ECU? Some tuning box sites say that they are more like a piggyback ECU that controls everything. Do tuning boxes control any of the outputs from the ECU? For example, output to the fuel injector to stay open for how long?
In a word unfortunately no anything you attach to the engine is falsifying signals that’s it, there are the odd thing out there that actually is soldered in to the ecu but that’s for very specific things, also others that intergrate more with the wiring loom but again it’s just falsifying signals 👍

how u wont make more torque if engine ecu calculate torque based on fuel and air ? so if there is more fuel and air there is more torque ecu thing it's seeing 400nm but reality is 450
@@94RS that wasn't the point of discussion, we were talking about torque limiting by a diesel engine ECU, which is a calculation based on fuel input Vs engine rpm (engine rpm being restrained by load), i.e. it limits fuel to limit torque
Great to hear - professional approach. I had same issue with Audi Q7 with DTE. Result was a disaster. Why? There is 500 NM torque limiter. How about the throttle tune? Think it makes sense.
I’ve got an Audi SQ5 with audi drive select, how does this remap effect the different modes, I.e will I lose the use of all the other modes and the car will be permanently stuck in sports (dynamic) mode?
Well, I’m convinced not to get a tuning box. I’d get the ecu flash in a heartbeat but if you return it to stock it will show up in the diagnostics that the car had been tuned at one point, thus voiding the warranty on your car. I’d like to see a tuner that won’t leave any trace in the ECU, but is that at all possible?

I put a tuning box on my chrysler grand voyager 2.8 diesel all it did was to put a load of fuel in and black smoke add a remap done far superior more power and better fuel consumption so a remap for me always.

I’m layman’s terms It’s basically telling the ecu lies. No matter the discussion etc that’s the fact of it, so am I right saying that the car thinks it’s running in cold conditions constantly? IMO that’s not good.

You talk about the torque limiter "issue" like it's a negative in a tuning box. Why do you think that torque limiter is there? It's to protect the components! If you're going to remap the ECU and overwrite the torque limiter then you're going to cause damage to the engine, clutch and gearbox.
the remap is for specific/custom needs(new hardware and limiters off) and it is very expensive(300EUR/Portugal) and a good box, as the Italian Box, can have a cost of 80EUR. The box, maintain the limiters, the warranty and is completely non intrusive(good for stage 1), but as limitations on the power. Ver good vídeo.

When you return your car to stock software #truetune will correct the CVN (calibration Verification Number) and therefore having the car tuned is completely untraceable by anyone. Been looking at tuning boxes/chips and put off by a lot of the research and poor customer service by these top rated companies. I'm not new to tuning but new to ECU tuning, had heavily modded Ren5GTTurbo. This guy makes sense. Checked your website but no info for Kia Stinger GT V6, are you planning one?
If you talking about the eBay or Amazon jobs that are like £20-30 then they literally do nothing but make an led flash inside the box you plug intot the obd port!👍
You come across really bitter, banging on a out getting your hands dirty and if it's a cold day 😂, what are you talking about. The thing is you are losing loads of money to customers buying tuning boxes and your trying to rubbish the competition. You could have done this in a better and more professional way.
Hi, I just installed a Racechip RS in my Audi A3 TDI 2.0 CR 140 2012 and I m very dissapointed, almost no difference in performance. I choose Racechip because my car is still under emission's warranty and Racechip leaves no trace. I heard that VW will not honor the warranty if they see a code from an old remap. Is it true that you have the way to do it without leaving trace? if so, I live in the Los Angeles, is it possible to get a remap from you? thanks
Hello, I also just bought the RaceChip RS for my 2019 Hyundai veloster Rspec. My car went from 206 HP, to 225 HP, and my torque went from 195 to 242. I do have K&N air filter installed but everything else is stock. I felt the difference but wanted to make sure it wasn't placebo so I did put it on the dyno. I noticed that even with running 93, 94 octane there was still some hesitation with the turbo. However, after putting stp octane booster, this has gone away and I notice a huge difference in power. Some guys mention going to an NGK hotter plug, which I haven't done. Did I get 40+ gains on HP, no i did not, but I did get enough gain to where I am satisfied. I have order their Pedal Commander as well, have not received it yet. The torque is the big kicker for me. I am sure everyone's experience is different. I know they have a 30 day guarantee so I would send it back.
I knew tuning boxes were a bit industrial just basically chucking in more fuel. My Peugeot partner had one on yeah it was quicker but smoked like the flying Scotsman and eventually fucked the drv up so the moral of the story re-maps are better.
Tuning boxes are a big waste of money and if you think that messing up the ECU's load and torque calculations/models (and also any safety stratergies) is a good thing to do, then you're a pleb. However a good remap on most modern cars has more than 40-50 table changes.. a few hundred easily...
