Why Uber And Amazon Are Going After Truckers

The trucking industry is worth hundreds of billions of dollars per year. Uber is going after this market with Uber Freight, an online platform that matches truckers with shippers looking to move cargo from one place to another.
In 2018, about 3.5 million people in the United States were employed as truck drivers. With the explosion of Amazon and other e-commerce companies, the demand for truck drivers has been outpacing supply. In 2018, the United States trucking industry was short over 60,000 drivers. If the trend holds, experts predict there could be a 160,000 driver shortage by 2028.

Yep and it’s probably cheap freight in order to out bid the brokers.. Unless you get your own authority and broker your own lane with the shipper directly you’re always going to have a broker.. Somebody is always going to have their hand in your pocket..

Uber is acting as a broker in a market with well established other brokers. The vast majority of truckers are owner/drivers. That means they own their truck and already work for themselves The person shipping decides what they want to spend and offers the job, drivers pick up the job based on whether they think it's worthwhile or not. Uber just provides the platform to allow shipper and trucker to meet. It's the same system as already established just digital. It is unlikely to have a downward force on prices offered, especially when there are a shortage of drivers and the cost of entry is around $350K Similar story for Amazon, those drivers aren't employees. There are no write ups, the efficiency of the job is between the driver and the shipper. The shipper says they need it at destination X by Y time. As long as that is met everyone is happy. Truck brokerage is a perfect fit for Ubers business model, even far moreso than rideshare.

@tjmarx
@tjmarx 3 года назад
@@dalpz205 Uber don't have drivers. It's this misunderstanding from people like you that make rideshare a bad model for uber and freight a great model. Owner/driver truckers already understand they aren't uber employees, they're their own separate business. They already understand uber is just a broker. They already understand the rules of the game. In terms of rideshare, if you're trying to make that your only income you're failing at life. There's a reason Uber don't conduct interviews, you aren't an employee. Uber rideshare is intended to be used casually as a ride pool. That is, you're heading in direction A. Bob over here wants to go in direction A too but doesn't have a car. You would like a bit of money to subsidize the fuel costs and maybe a little money in your pocket for beer money or whatever. Uber acts as a broker to match you with Bob. If you're doing anything else with Uber you're using the platform wrong and that's your problem, not uber's.

Adam, you are absolutely right - and I know very little about the freight industry, but like many of their pieces its clear CNBC does very lazy reporting. How it works is corporations host briefings for media like CNBC, put on a dog & pony show trying to put their company strategy in the best possible light. That part is generally OK; this is usually fairly honest old-fashioned salesmanship. People relate to people, so after a good lunch and/or dinner together, both parties leave feeling a level of confidence in understanding. Later, press kits or press releases go to the media company or industry analyst, and being very busy and under pressure, most pretty much just use that information as their slightly edited “news article” I’m experienced at this on both sides of the table, and CNBC is unimpressive.

Companies will always say that there is a "labor shortage" and a "skills gap", it is in their best interest to do so, not just financially. By the government listening to them and allowing more illegals, legal immigrants, and visa workers to come in, they don't have to train employees themselves, they can just import people which is easier and those workers are more complaint while also keeping wages depressed due to supply and demand, and keeping the price of housing and durable goods inflated due to supply and demand. Every single job could be filled and they would still say there is a labor shortage and a skills gap.

Only freight company’s are having a shortage because there doing the exact thing Urber Frieght is try to do and that’s by paying drivers cheap and trying to survive off of volume. In this case the strategy is to 'install' themselves in the trucking industry right before everything automates, so that when it happens they are perfectly ready to just transition to automation all while already having the biggest market share hoarded for themselves. Not the best moment to become a truck driver if you are young (or any manual labor for that matter). I guess they have 10 to 20 years of lifespan max before all this is completely automated.

All corporations dream of a time when they can automate, or subcontract ALL of their employees away. That's great, except I don't know who they think is going to buy their products once no one has a decent job. We'll all be paying what little money we might have for housing, food and medical. Corporations are very short sighted.

They don't care. They would let you die on the streets. They get money. You die = no problem.

There is no shortage of drivers. The real truth is that there is a shortage of pay. If the companies pay the drivers enough, then the drivers will be there. The term "driver shortage" is only tied to pay. Otherwise, driver shortage is a lie.

That's why I laugh when I hear that now that I've learned. That phrase is the larger companies basically crying out loud. Who cares lol pay better and you'll have people. Oh no, but how will we compete, we can't pay more. Once again, who cares, if you want employees, pay them like you want to keep them, freight hauling requires a lot of time away from friends and family.
