Ah, the perfect squad weapon for long range engagements in Afghanistan. Militaries always adopt the best weapons to fight the last war.
@jfess1911
@jfess1911 2 месяца назад
True, but the optics have made the battlefield longer than before, at least for accurate fire. That won't go away. The enemies of the US have the internet too and have learned to stay our of range of the M4, so there will be an increasing amount of battles started at over 500m. It had gotten to be about 1 in 6 engagements in Afghanistan starting at over 500m, FWIW (based on NDIA presentations concerning overmatch, a decade or so ago). I personally think the US should use a "weapons locker" approach and choose whatever weapon will work best in a particular situation. In other words, use 5.56 when kicking doors, and something longer-ranged in open country.
@nate2838
@nate2838 2 месяца назад
@@jfess1911 Now now, we can't have that, it would make too much sense! Joking aside, the logistics would be a little more complicated, however, they do need to bring both .556 and 7.62 anyway, so it shouldn't be that hard to manage.
@jfess1911
@jfess1911 2 месяца назад
@@nate2838 I just hope that it does not take a disaster with a lot of US Soldiers lost to switch the thinking. I understand the desire to only deal with one type of ammo and weapon for for logistics sake, but 5.56 will be around for for non-frontline-combat troops anyway. I could see 7.62x51 largely phased out for handheld weapons and replaced with something that works better at distance, but I am not sure that the current 6.8x51 is the right answer.

@jfess1911 the way i see it the 6.8 phases out the 5.56 and the 338 replaces 7.62. Basically doubling effective range of infantry units. @@seththomas3418 'as effective' does not mean its more powerful... putting aside the fact .338 supposedly has higher energy at range than .50 BMG despite the lower muzzle energy, this weapon has a higher fire rate and much more ammo capacity both loaded and carried. I would argue its more effective, and that the military is likely interested in moving on from the M2 in a joint effort with other NATO powers seeking to integrate .338 as a NATO standard round for their respective GPMGs.
@blchfnby
@blchfnby 2 месяца назад
@@V3RTIGO222Uncle sam aint ever giving up the M2, The .338 norma magnum round that has drawn a lot of attention can punch through the highest infantry available body armor, but the M2 still has its own purpose. The .50 caliber rounds that are used by the US military are hotter than civilian purchasable munitions, and this increase in powder load ups velocity but increases wear. Doing that with a single infantry served weapon is not such a good idea, due to the issues that arise from increased wear with weapon systems. The M2 was used to reach out and touch enemy infantry at extreme distances but more importantly it can punch through Russian IFV armor. The M2 can tear through BTRs, BRDMs, Tunguskas and Shilkas. The .338 norma magnum lacks that level of penetration. Combine that with the US military-s SLAPP munitions for the M2 (disregarding the faulty rounds that scott got his hands on and almost tore out his own throat with) and you have a weapon that can reach out and touch enemy light armor and punch clean through it without requiring specialized Anti Tank weaponry. The M136 AT4 is a single shot Anti tank rocket launcher that is more effective but with a max effective range of around 300 meters (further if youre a drop surgeon with it like Jamsheed is with an RPG) A Javelin Anti tank Top Attack rocket launcher is far more effective and has the same range as an M2 for anti light armor purposes but the cost of one of those is the same cost as easily 100 belts of 100 rounds of SLAPP for an M2. The M2 is far more effective than most people give the old Ma credit for, and even a graze from a round from an m2 (not center of mass, but hitting the meat of the arm. Dont believe the BS of a near miss still killing. Not physically possible) will put you down, Bloodloss from a loss of a limb leads to loss of life in around 60 seconds-ish without a tourniquet. The REAPR will blend the reach out range of the M2 and the weight of an M240, problem is, it wont be as lethal as the M2 against harder targets and it will wear out faster than the 240. Its pros are massive and its cons are bypassable, but it will never replace the M2. Dont replace what works, replace what doesnt. TL;DR its entire job isnt to replace the M2, but to give infantry the same reach out and touch capabilities as the M2 without requiring a HMVVW or JLTV/MATV with an M2.

Ok so I know the guy that made the .338 norma... Lol he gets .02 for everyone manufactured him and my uncle are very good friends. So the cartridge was kinda a dud till the 300smk came out so it has to use match bullets essentially to get the good properties your talking about, the larger the caliber the higher the BC. If you put match bullets in a .50 it would smoke the.338, that's just a bullet change. They are going back to war calibers 😉 the are replacing 556 with a intermediate magnum and 308 with long action Magnus... The US is planning to win something 💀 and the civilian market needs to keep up before we get out paced lol
@joshm3484
@joshm3484 Месяц назад
Depends on what you're shooting at. At 1500m a 300gr 338 will be moving at 1200fps and hit with 950ft-lbs. At the same distance a 660gr 50bmg will be going at 1400fps and hit with 2800ft-lbs. The 338 is unlikely to penetrate modern body armor. The 50bmg would go straight through it, and most unarmored or lightly armored vehicles. This isn't meant to replace the M2. It's meant to supplement the M240.

Your two options in this instance are True Velocity who has never made a gun, let alone a MG, or Ohio Ordnance who has only manufactured 25,000 guns ever (according to them) albeit the majority of those are MGs. SIG has only manufactured a few MGs (assumed) but will be manufacturing daily for NGSW. Manufacturing infrastructure is an important consideration when deciding a contract.
@BodilyFunction
@BodilyFunction 2 месяца назад
@@gunguru7020 I agree but so is investing in other new manufacturers. Making like 3 mega manufacturers for military small arms in America seriously limits the options. This is a small enough order that the money could be invested (in the way of a low interest loan or something similar) to grow this company big enough to complete this order easily and on time. It’s a good starter and could bring some new competition into the field which forces innovation by the rest of the competitor to better compete giving us better products in the end.

@task and purpose I don’t want you to think I’m talking trash. I really am just trying to help you avoid mistakes with muzzle energy. You said that gun had 50% more energy. It’s actually close to double the energy. If a bullet weighs 2X as much and is traveling at the same rate of speed it has 2X the kinetic energy. If a bullet is traveling 2X as fast as another identical bullet it has 4X the kinetic energy. Also, some easy ones to remember or you can get close enough to remembering. 22.3% faster is 1.5x more energy, 41.4% faster is 2x more energy, 73.2% is 3x and finally 100% faster is 4x the muzzle energy. This is why when looking at a slight change in velocity make sure you realize 20% is a huge. Keep up the amazing work. We know they didn’t trust you with the calculator.

However, one of the great things about the Cold War era was ammunition uniformity and compatibility between service branches and a majority of allied military. Now days we are fast approaching the point where both specific weapon systems as well as ammo will have to be replaced on the battlefield to ensure warfighter capabilities and survivability. Combined with potential theater wide logistical challenges to ensure proper compatibility to weapon systems with ammunition supplies.
