Why Use Coffee Grounds As Fertilizer?

Coffee grounds are a great source of nitrogen. They also provide a decent amount of potassium and calcium, as well as a few other minerals!
The nitrogen won't be immediately available, but the potassium, calcium and other minerals will be! Also, used coffee grounds are not acidic, as most of their acidity has been washed away during the process of making your cup of coffee! In fact, they are very near a 6.5-6.8 PH level!
When you consider the fact that they offer an NPK of 2.1-0.3-0.3 to the soil, they are a very solid "free" resource for most people. If you are not a coffee drinker, you can ask your local coffee shop for their daily coffee grounds to add to your garden, compost bin, or as a mulch.

I usually add them to the red mulch on my citrus and avocado tree, and they really helped out. Gotta be careful too, because weeds will almost grow over night with all that extra nitrogen. Just subscribed, glad to see a fellow Houstonian making RU-vid vids.

Finally getting some nitrogen to that poor bed by the house. I bet it breathed a sigh of relief. We tried G90 corn one year and it was such good sweet corn. We just haven't been growing any corn for the last few years because our garden has become way too shaded. One of our chores next pruning season will be to trim trees. God bless you and yours and have a great Independence Day.

Have been xp with coffee grounds and thrown almost all my coffee grounds under two gooseberry shrubs for five years now (pluss there are some chives under them also). I drink lots of coffee, so its alot. Dont know if it has had any effect or not on growth. But the "soil" that used to be grey and clay like, is now dark an loosen down to about 7-8 inches. I have not been digging it in to the soil, just throwing it on top.
@kevin_archeron124
@kevin_archeron124 Год назад
I am testing this on my lawn this year. I have a lot of clay soil. so I did about 50 gallons of starbucks grounds, and then immediately did a 28-0-0 liquid fertilizer. my thoughts are the grounds add organic matter, attract earthworms, and might help change the clay over time. the liquid nitrogen will help keep the levels up while the coffee grounds begin to break down, thus preventing a nitrogen deficiency and also giving the grass a nice green up. we will see come spring how it all turns out.

would love to know more about what your results have been. are you seeing improved soil quality? just over all green yard? guess its one of those were in my own case I have to ask "Was it just the coffee or all the other things I am doing?" I am hoping it will amend the clay soil over time and help it become closer to loam

A good use of readily available fertilizer would be diluted urine. It's worked good for me so far. Since all the food you've eaten has already broken down into your bladder, plants will love the high nitrogen, long as you don't place it on the leaves.

Hi I am starting brand new vege garden, and have three 2400x1500x300 raised beds and a 3000x2000 poly-tunnel.. I am bringing in 50/50 screened topsoil and spent mushroom/bark mix compost to start and have placed cardboard on the grass. On one "experimental' bed I have placed rotted tree branches from the bush as a base with autumn leaves and coffee grounds. Not really hugelculture but I figure it can't harm. I have constant weekly free supply of shop coffee grounds. Can I blend this with the soil without composting first? I also have 2 CuM of wood chip which is weathered and will spread this on top of cardboard around the beds. Ultimately the back yard will become like your 'bush floor' instead of grassed as it is now. Do you also use the wood chip as a mulch on the beds? Can you let me know if these ratios are OK to start my new vege beds please.
@RobBackyardGardenerr
@RobBackyardGardenerr 6 лет назад
allanpennington wow! You're really getting a serious start! Depending on your zone, it sounds like your prepping your beds for next year? If so, the ratios you're suggesting will be quite ready come spring. Your base is solid and your wood chip mulch will also provide a solid moisture retention layer, as well as a nitrogen feeding layer, assuming you allow the 3-6 months it'll take to adequately break down. I would also suggest checking your soil ph and for any additional nutrients that may be lacking. Test now and then again a month before sowing to really get a good read. Remember that wood chips and coffee grounds (as well as branches layered below ground) will take time to break down, provide nutrients and allow for beneficial microorganisms to colonize.

Rob what nutrient is missing when say peppers or tomatoes start to rot while growing?
@RobBackyardGardenerr
@RobBackyardGardenerr 6 лет назад
Calcium typically - although it could be one of two reasons why the calcium is deficient... Either the soil is actually lacking it, or the plant is not getting enough water to take it in and up to the soft tissues of the plant. I have a video about Blossom End Rot (BER).

Why USED coffee grounds instead of unused? I have regular access to a bunch of unused coffee grounds at my workplace that is leftover from their big coffee/cacao machine. It is mostly coffeegrounds mixed with some cocoa and dried milk powder. We normally throw it out but I thought, why not use it on my potato peels that I just planted?
