In the 95th birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Shekhar Gupta puts his political style in today’s context. With examples, he underlines how he would’ve handled today’s unrest, putting conciliation over confrontation.

Tamilnadu never voted for BJP. When Jayalalithaa allied with BJP in 1998 it was Vajpayee who won the hearts of the Tamil people. When people came to know that he wrote poems too, many just fell in love with him. He is the one who selected A.B.J. Abdul Kalam as president for which Tamils are eternally grateful. Kalaingar Karunanidhi famously said that he was "right man in the wrong party". Everyone wanted an alliance with Vajpayee at that time. I saw him in a political meeting in which after his speech he was given a garland as big/tall as 20 feet. He was so surprised and innocently asked how could he wear such a weight. Then he posed as many were holding it Temple style. May God bless us a politician like him sooner...

The main difference between today's ruling duo of the same party and the Vajpayee and the colleagues is that they belonged to an ideology but were not forged in it's crucible. They had fair ideas of the complex nature of this society and had served within a varied tapestry of the political ideologies forming country's polity throughout the early decades of independent India. The current crop of the same party was forged in the closed crucible of the hindutva ideology and were introduced in politics through an organisation that didn't accepted the flag and constitution of India for most of it's history. And that exactly is their viewpoint that defines their approach and they are acting accordingly. The earlier class is gone and there won't be any new ones like them but i don't think it would matter in the long run for the country as they're all tied to the same goals of their ideology, Vajpayee elevated Savarkar to the Parliament and now they'll give him more public legitimacy with highest national honour, Vajpayee headed the party throughout the Mandir movement and now their government will build it and chest thump about it, he also fought for same things in the manifesto and they're implementing it. The only option is whether to kill through the frog in the boiling water directly (like now) or slowly increase the temperature to keep the frog mellow (boiling frog syndrome)? The option is for public to choose and seems like they've chosen it.
@mukulmishra4722
@mukulmishra4722 4 года назад
Great. However, in the long term assessment I tend to disagree. What you're effectively doing is a far-fetched long term generalisation of ideological committment to a cause. The modern labour party in UK belong to the same mold of ideology as the party of Blair once did. Do you believe the cause of the distortion in the modern left UK, and their skewed position is anyway attributable to the past, despite both claiming to champion labor and human causes. I won't say so. You are underestimating the personality of the leader at helm at any given point of time, and the means he uses to acvomplish his goals. Atalji Virat hindutvavaadi, unlike Modi-Shah duo. However, you may have your disagreements with Savarkar and his ideolgy,fair enough- but in a country like ours, many acclaimed historians don't even believe that Gandhian movement led us to freedom. ✌🏽

He did show some boldness when he consented for Pokhran nuclear tests, even thought international community warmed against tough sanctions. And as S Gupta alludes to in the video if Vajpayee had won a second term with majority (like this dispensation) maybe I wouldn't be as willing to look back at him with rose tinted glasses.. The bigger question is should one be willing to overlook personal preferences to vote for something that's not their "natural" choice? Dont worry students support the present govt. There are thousands of colleges and universities in this country and the students shown in media will represent maximum 10%, so most of the students are not in the screen/media. Everyone specially the students understands the policies of the left and right wing and whats going on in world politics in most of the democratic countries in the world including US,UK, India etc etc

Vajpais way of working was good but did opposition appreciates that ? Congress behavior does not deserve the same treatment . They treated Modi and other opposition CM very badly . Particularly congress unleashed entire govt machinery under Sonia and her Obedient Chidambaram who went extra mile to prove he is loyal dog and acted like criminal to implicate Modi . Today country need strong leader who can take tough decision which politically may not be correct but are required and good for country which only Modi can take ( Not even BJP) because Modi is not working for his family or friend but working for India . If people understand that India will progress else country will be crawling under incompetent leaders and people for another 100 years . People whiteout skills surviving on govt bheek are growing . These people can not think beyond their selfish tiny needs and congress survive on such idiots . You guys never spoke against congress leadership when they were running vendetta rather you were licking Sonia /Rahuls ass because you thought congress rule will never end

India needed a discontinuous sudden step change ! Modi provided that ! Vajpayee the poet was totally incapable of that ! Muslims & Christians took advantage of vajpayee. Now we know exactly how to deal with these antinationals who cannot even think beyond their own narrow community. In India change management must be shocking &sudden & unpredictable NOT slow & predictable. Indians please,learn how to change yourself from the experiences of last 6 months since June 2019 loksabha results. Indians should gain insight into their own complex nature. Hail Modi the great ! The leader,for 21st century India.
