Why Was the Resurrection of Jesus Surprising? 

Since Jesus had repeatedly told his disciples he would be raised on the third day, why were they surprised when it happened? What did they-and other first century Jews-believe about the resurrection? Also, the Old Testament has no explicit prophecy of the Messiah’s resurrection on the third day, so what does Paul mean when he says that Christ was raised “on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures”?
