I listen to this song alot for something that came out in the 90s. lol The lead singer Linda Perry is now a famous songwriter, probably best-known for writing "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera.
I listen to it pretty much at least weekly. LOVED it since 1993. I just will hit repeat for hours ... It sums up so much and means so much while life ends up being nothing at all many times.
Absolutely love this song!!! Thanks for reacting to it 💞 4 non-blonds is because they were four women that formed a band, which was almost unheard of. They are from San Francisco and only made one album together. Linda Perry is the lead singer - she is a gifted songwriter who has written with and for a lot of huge stars, like Pink and Dolly Parton, amongst many others.
@@marleinasmom yes, in the 80s and 90s there were almost no all-female bands that made it big time. I can name 2-3 out of dozens of bands. You see it differently, share your thoughts. "Seriously" is a bit childish
I iwsh they had more hits and maybe they did and I just did not hear about them. I love this song. Other female bands I can think of are the Go Gos, Bangles and Heart. But not many.
I'm lucky enough to have dual citizenship. While I'm American, I spent all my summers in Mexico with my cousins. This song was insanely huge in Mexico! The fact that it has a billion views does not surprise me at all. I heard this song everyday for an entire summer LOL
Pink was a huge fan of the lead singer. She ended up having a lot to do with Pink s second album "mizzunderstood", which is amazing 🔥 the song that was suggested at the end: "dear Mr. President" is a Pink song.. Please check out the live version from wembly🙏🙏🙏
A GREAT and defining music of the 90's! Great flow and build-up, great melody, great musicians, great voice, great lyrics, great message, great video, great nostalgia and great composition! Love it!
Linda Perry, the singer and main songwriter for 4 Non-blondes, grew up in a single-parent family with a couple of siblings and unfortunately, she suffered some physical abuse by her mother and some sexual abuse by at least one of her mother's boyfriends. She started playing music very young, playing solo often at open mic nights. Her early songs were raw and angry and most definitely a cry for help. She had a very messed-up world view, and songs like "What's Up" reflect this. The song was released in 1992, on their debut album. Linda had severe anxiety and stage fright when it was time for a show, and she started using heavy drugs to try to ease it. About three albums in, the band broke up. Just before the Millennium, after getting off drugs, Linda decided to forge a new career, as a producer and mentor to up-and-coming female artists. Two of her first mentes were Christina Aguilera and Pink. Lands is a hugely successful songwriter and producer, so much more comfortable being behind the scenes than performing.
And there's another all-female band you can react to: L7 It is a more heavy in its sound but it is still a very underrated band (by nowadays standards) that actually were great and achieved success with a very particular kind of sound. L7 - "Pretend We're Dead" is probably their biggest hit: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NAdlZ2F-fs8.html (video version), and their channel (no video): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g-UOTOqtU0M.html Other great bands (with the majority being female players and/or singers) was The Breeders and The Corrs.
Why did you have to come with all the SJW bullshit?! XD Just joking! Love the song and (despite not understanding that it was a gay character at the time) still love the cartoon (one of the best ever along with Captain Planet)!
Linda Perry, the lead singer, is more known in the music industry as a very accomplished song writer. She has written so many songs for a number of artists. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Songs_written_by_Linda_Perry Also she was married to Sarah Gilbert {Darlene from the "Roseanne" show and the talk show "The Talk"} they also have a son together. They have broken up in 2019 but it's amicable. They share parenting. They announced their engagement in April 2013 and married on March 30, 2014. Gilbert gave birth to their son Rhodes Emilio Gilbert Perry, on February 28, 2015. Perry is stepmother to Gilbert's son and daughter from a previous relationship. In December 2019, Gilbert filed for legal separation from Perry.
I've heard this song before! I don't know how or where. But it is familiar! Thank you, Billy, for doing music reactions, so I can re-find songs that I haven't listened to in years as well as find new ones to listen to.
@@eviekelpie1 I swear I was too young to remember it in the 90s'. Though I might have heard it again in the early 2000s'. I just never knew who played the song before. I know I haven't heard the song that often either. It was just a few times I believe, anyway.
That song was a number one in local charts a few months around my 14th birthday in '93. Still doesn' t feel that long ago... Btw. She wrote quite a few of Pink's hit songs...
I love love love this song and this video. Those crazy eyes, tho... Edited to add I've seen this video at least 20 times and I never noticed the heart boxers.
Linda Perry wrote songs for Pink and other Artists! She is close friends with Pink and many more!! This was a game changer for Gen Xers!! Like me!! Her and Alanis Morrisette stepped it up bigtime in the early 90s for woman!!
Your reaction is great. I only know this song from them. I think it is perfect. Every note of every instrument. Every inflection of her voice. The rythm. The groove. Always happy to hear it and happier after I hear it
They made one album and broke up during their second album recording. They had such potential. The lead singer writes for quite a few big names and is in the songwriters hall of fame
You're so my cup of tea when I need a good laugh. I like just observing different reviews but it would be cool to do a review with you. Anyway great job this song was big back then and I guess still is.
Your lead singer here was a child of abuse who grew up to become a part of a lesbian successful power group and bowed out under the pressures of fame and drugs... She found that her true calling was in writing the music more than even performing it. She has produced great works for a lot of artists such as Pink and Christina Aguilera. And she's married to Melissa Gilbert from the Roseanne show
Thank you Billy, I know I requested this....I do not know if anyone else did but this is a song we really need to hear as the lyrics are what we need learn from it. This world is falling apart and we need to put it back together.
@2:35 - the brotherhood of man thing... I would hear that from the pov of a lesbian feminist. Which also (to me) colors her reference to wanting a "revolution". Feels different looking at that now vs. then....
The group were trying to figure out what to call themselves and one of them pointed out that none of them were blonde. This the name 4 non blondes was borne.
All this song ever reminds me of is "Hi, I'm Adam, Prince of Eternia. Fabulous secret powers were revealed to me when I held aloft my magic sword and..." Epic meme ensues.
Linda Perry is a force. She mainly produces and is a song-writer now, which is a shame cause that woman can SANG. Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Courtney Love, James Blunt, Gwen Stefani, Adele, and Pink to name a few peeps who are out there singing her stuff. This song though man.. all of my friends call this 'my song'. And I am okay with that, been on the top of my playlist for a long time. Glad you enjoyed it. Oh and worth mentioning she is married to Sara Gilbert from The Conners.
Billy as you're doing female artists, have you reacted to? Janis Joplin, Ball and Chain, live at the Monterey Pop Festival 1967? Considered one of the best and so unique.
You really missed out when MTV was all music all the time with cool videos. It was a lot of new music because they needed to fill airtime and new artist were given more of a chance. It wasn’t just the music but the video and that made you pay attentional the song.
Den Den Gonjales from P.I. does a heavy rock cover of this. Just make sure it's the new one (he is wearing a leather jacket in the video) He also rocks the shit out of "I"ll Never Let You Go" by Steelheart
When she talks about the brotherhood of man. She reflects about life is defined by patriarchal systems. In other words the brotherhood is designed to cater for anything that oppressed women and set out to define who they are and how they should live. A good example is when the decision on birth control was made by all male politicians. That discussion is still on going. So when she says whatever that means. It means we live in a system of decisions made by men. And it plays down that we are but sheep following them blindly. In this song she questions that system in how we are defined and made to live our lives. It's not an anti male assumption. It's just that she questions what the hell is going on when others make decisions on our behalf without us even thinking or talking about it. Mainstream media is a definite tool that shapes the way we think and process information. And it usually plays into the benefit of that brotherhood of man. Men and women who are led blindly into a system of being unbalanced and catering for a one-sided power structure. She basically telling us not to accept what's in front of us, fed to us through so many unbalanced power systems. But to question these structures. And to ensure the voices of all are heard.
Have you ever checked out Sara Bareillis? She covers everything from sad and emotional to happy and fun. I would say sad=Bluebird or She Used to be Mine, fun= Brave or King of Anything and a good post break up song is Gonna Get Over You
I heard this song before but NOT THIS VERSION! OKAY 4 Non Blondes this is NICE! (There is a version that is for some reason used for He Man clips or something like that and it's more upbeat and pop type but I think I'm preferring this version!)
