Fantasy stories may seem to be mere escapes from reality, but they actually are essential to society since they inspire us to act heroically in reality.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I just bought your course on Udemy on writing a fantasy novel, and this talk really inspires me to get started writing! I love the idea of fantasy being about hero moments: doing what is right rather than easy. Helps me focus on what is important in my story.

I'm going to start the course soon, I'd like your opinion on it. Did you enjoy it?

Encouraging talk about the power of fantasy. I laughed at his, "It's (the sword) is a symbol that let's you know... I'm a nerd." Haha, same here, I have 3 swords in my apartment :) Love the story insights and what it takes to be a hero. Jason is a dear friend, and I've seen him, time and time again, choose what is right over what is easy.

You are a nerd. And that's awesome. As always, thanks for the words of encouragement.

Hi. :) I just joined your class. This is really inspiring and has come up for me in real life a few times. Not too long ago my dog was attacked by another loose dog on a walk and, instead of doing nothing- I actually jumped on the pitbull, bit it, and held it down for 15 minutes before the cops showed up. My puppy and I are both fine, but I just thought about that when I was watching. Also, I have a slight... a little more than slight phobia of getting blood drawn/vein uhh stuff, but when I have to go in for those things I think about the characters in books or my favorite shows/movies (Dean Winchester anyone lol) and know I could get through it because they could.

You gave us a proud nerd moment right at the beginning Jason. Hero moments calls us to fantasy but what I live for are those nerd moments!

This was beautiful. I love the way you make a "hero moment" relatable. Often we think of hero's as being say the "act" of a firefighter who risks their life to save another. It is interesting to think of it as a character trait. Just joined your class on Udemy, can't wait to see what's next!

Totally love this and resonates DEEPLY! I too, as a kid have been called to fantasy and have been in love with consumption of such magical stories. I recently (yesterday) bought your Udemy Course on World Building, and I am beyond excited to enter this new journey!! I find that I can take the challenges in my own life, and in our world on Earth and translate them to a story, and then I can decide how the choices are made. The RIGHT choices. Aho! :)

Very nice. Yes they’re about revealing your character…. Not to other people, but to yourself. You are learning in fairy tales who YOU are. Fairy tales build in us the foundational fundamental beliefs and values that give us a good background story so we CAN and WILL choose to be a hero.

Hi Jason, thanks for the video. I just joined that class... been struggling for a long time with putting points on paper and this gave me a great way to think about things and to really start considering the flow of the character(s). Thank you!

Great video. I wish I had a sword like that. I have been lucky to have had several hero moment in my life, but they were more training and how I was brought up, so it was an easy decision. I can look back and have a clear conscience
