Btw, a really fun idea for kids is publishing books/comic books through Lulu storybooks. My son also wrote a choose your own adventure, and had a blast!

Thank you so much for this video! My oldest son (11.5) struggles with reading and writing, ADHD and Tourette’s get in his way a lot, along with stubbornness. Your video gave me some excellent ideas on how to encourage him.

I am so glad this was an encouragement. I will say with some of my special needs kids I don't start till even later. My oldest with Dyslexia will be starting a formal curriculum for the first time in 8th grade because he just needed more time.

I totally understand why no writing before a certain age. My middle daughter is going into 5th grade and she is finally starting to take off in that area. Great video Katie!

Yes!! We also focus on oral composition rather than written before 5th grade. It allows my kids to explore their imagination in their free time and start writing simply for enjoyment! My oldest is writing a Lego Star Wars script, haha. Have you read the book Know & Tell? I think you’d enjoy it. It’s about using oral narration (tell back what you know) to build the skills of gleaning the important points, organizing thoughts, and building sentences orally, then transitioning to writing around age 10.

Thank you for explaining this! Writing was a sore subject here, so we stopped. I've always felt guilty but now that my oldest is almost 12 I want to incorporate it as I see her improvement in the basics of handwriting, grammar, and spelling. Thank you for validating and putting into words what I have been doing out of my intuition!

What a timely video 🙌🏻❤️. My 8 year old struggles big time with writing. She does very much enjoy writing songs or in a diary. I kept thinking she needed more formal just due to public school thinking but your video just makes so much sense. Love that you mention oral dictation and voice to text (brilliant) I will have to keep this in mind. Thank you for sharing!

I agree ❤ we do a lot of copywork and dictation in the younger years. I never pushed it, but both of my kids enjoy writing now 🎉

This was really helpful!! I have an 8 year old son who loves telling stories and talking, but when it comes to actually writing? He HATES it. He has always had trouble with things that use his small motor skills (we're working on that through different avenues this summer) and when it comes to putting pencil to paper, it is always a struggle. We had to drop his writing curriculum because he is also terrible at spelling. It was just too many skills that he isn't the best at all put together. I'm hoping that once we have penmanship and spelling more solidified, we can begin formal writing instruction again. Until then, it's easy copy work. Thanks so much for other ideas as well!!

This sounds JUST like my 8 year old daughter!! She can tell stories for days, never stops talking and will even make up songs 😅. However, ask her to write up a story or even just simple sentences and it’s a struggle. It has had me so worried thinking I’m failing her! This video was just what I needed to hear as well ❤.

I think many people have rather unrealistic ideas about what writing looks like for elementary-age children. There are so many fundamental mechanical skills that come into play before you can even really work on what make good writing 'good'.

My oldest started his 1st writing curriculum this year in his 1st year of high school!!! Writing was included in our language arts curriculum but I don’t require it as long as they are writing!!!
