Crazy thought -- maybe, just maybe, the guy who's caring for several of these creatures for a living knows more about their proper care than the layperson on the street.
I mean you can tell they are treated so dang well, this man would do anything for them and you can tell! It's such a silly thing to be pushing on someone esp when they clearly are out in a very windy place. They are made like this.
@@user-ru5jy5lr4g What are you talking about? He just made a reasonable observation. How is that being butt hurt? 😂 Take your toxic criticism somewhere else
I figured it protects their eyes. I ALSO figured that YOU know more about how to care for them than I do. And I like the "bangs". Hamish reminds me of a 2000lb muppet.
If the people who pestered you to '"cut the bangs" had been to Scotland in summer, they would know why keeping insects out of your eyes is a really good idea... Thanks for explaining
Amen. Lord bless you. These are amazing beautiful animals. Cows are cool. We had Guernseys on our farm as a kid. They were big pets, and we named them too. 😄
I’m so sorry that you have to deal with rudeness and inconsideration. You’re gentleness and calmness is refreshing and a reason why I watch you. I appreciate that you don’t lose that when responding to tough and unkind comments . Thank you for taking time to introduce us to and educate us on these beautiful animals.
We've had Herefords and they would be very prone to pink eye when grass went to seed...that hair would have helped keep the seeds out their eyes . People don't understand breeds and purposes of certain traits.
It’s not just that people these days love tell people what they “should be doing” thinking they know better like how are you going to tell someone who’s been around cattle for years what they should be doing with there cattle?
I am so pleased you explained this. I am from Scotland and grew up with Highland Cattle. People have no idea how Many insects we have flying around in Scotland in the summer. Highlands live in a very extreme environment and are extremely well adapted!!!
"why are you trying to be hard headed?" Fun fact, the swedish word for hard headed is "tjurskallig" for which the literal translation is "bull headed". ❤️🐂
How Hamish responds to you...it s amazing! It also shows his intelligence and his willingness to acknowledge the position you have in his life. He is very attached to you and also shows he wants to belong to you. That is kind of touching coming from a steer his age.
Aren’t those beautiful “bangs” part of being a Scottish Highland Cow. All the hair makes them all the more Amazing Looking. Same as eyelashes, there for a reason..
This is a question I have always had about horses but never asked, I assumed there was a good reason as these people clearly do the best for their animals. Thanks for taking the time to educate us.
I noticed when the combing stop briefly to clean the comb out, then Hamish turns his head to find out what has happened that caused the combing to stop.
All animals have their features for a reason. Bugs me to the moon and back when people try to change them for personal gain. Just like those who cut off their horse's whiskers because it 'looks pretty'.
Just to clear something up here, not ALL animal features are there for a reason. F.ex. common sheep have been bred by humans to constantly grow more wool, so if left alone they'll straight up die from having too much wool. So when it comes to domesticated animals things can vary
People are very uneducated about animals, especially in the USA. I can't watch these "cute animal videos" because they always hurt their animals for clicks!
There is a reason why Highlands have bangs: "Long eyelashes and a thick fringe of hair protects their eyes from stinging hail, lashing rain, insects, and biting winds." They especially need their bangs at this time of the year as the weather becomes more harsh.
You can tell this man has dedicated his life to understanding these animals. He's like a whisper. I mean he's actually on video showing you his work and knowlege about them. What more do you need?
Just saw this video and had to say: I feel for you being ticked off about people being so rude. I assumed that its to keep the flys and other debris away from there eyes. I think your absolutely amazing and love your genuine pure honesty.
I'd like to believe that the bull/steer drooling is a sign of relaxation and trust, the same as my cat drooling when he's sitting in my lap purring his lungs off. dunno if it's true, but I'mma believe it anyway. glad I found this channel, I wish you and your beautiful animals the best of health
Wife and I really enjoy your videos. That view of you and Hamish around the 3 minute mark really makes Hamish look huge. What a beautiful animal and interaction between you both🙂
Looks like Kylo has been in the hay again!❤️😃 Don’t worry about any negative comments…they don’t have a real understanding and it’s distracting from all the expensive/proper care you give to your beautiful animals!!
I get the biggest kick watching you care for these huge animals the way you do. You have alot of fans for sure, just keep up the great work you're doing and know that you've touched so many lives with your kindness. As to those that are rude? Its sadly the direction our country has gone. Sooo much rudeness and entitlement. You are doing great and thank you for sharing your joy with us.
So glad I found your channel, my friends have Highlanders (20), they are their lawn mowers and pets, they just let them be themselves and they live happy life!!!
I watch to see how friendly you and Hamish are. On this subject tho i Don't see many people brushing there bulls so gotta figure you do what's best him. He certainly thinks so. I'm here for the piece and love 👍
The rude people most of the time are not creators themselves. Their way of living constists many times of complaining, nagging and bashing other people or whatever they can find. I just discovered your channel and it's very informative!
Sir you are wonderful for the information you share, the great care you provide to all your fur buddies and the patience you show the world. You are awesome, thank you
To be fair, I think a lot of people aren't deliberately trying to be rude, but just don't consider stepping out of their shoes and into the other persons', or even realise there's another perspective in the first place. That being said, you're absolutely right that there's still a sizeable chunk of people who are entitled or downright malicious, or both lol.
@@armata_strigoi_0 There's no shortage of it. I was amazed at the pettiness when I began reading comments but then I remember public schools I went to. It's digital now and anonymous.
There's fringes to put on horses to keep the flies out of their eyes, and I figure that as here in Scotland, we have a lot of wee biting insects and flying insects that could annoy a cow by getting in their eyes, that Highland Cattle were deliberately bred to have a 'fringe', plus it's raining hard RIGHT NOW as I watch this, here in the Scottish Highlands, and the wind is blowing, although not too hard - if you take into consideration where they're bred for, they make perfect sense.
I was curious.... however, do we cut a cat’s whiskers? Nope, they need them. I’m thinking it’s flies, the sun or the rain. It’s okay, I’ll go look it up. The wind and debris! Never thought about that! I think it’s endearing and cute. My new cow! THE HIGHLAND! Thank you for the share! Roger wants a selfie! ♥️
Living with and caring for these animals is so humbling. It gives the dimension of what we truly are: one of them. We share the same space, benefiting from each others, equally.
Hamish loves to be brushed...I can tell. Animals are made by design by nature. There is a reason their bangs are long, I would totally leave it. Hamish is very handsome.
You be you and you do a wonderful job of raising those magnificent animals and they all enjoy your company, you are very kind to those animals and they know it!!!!
The “bangs” or asI like to call it, “emo hairdo”, is the most beautiful distinctive feature of Highland cows. And it protects their sweet eyes. Thanks for sharing your life with these majestic and loving creatures.
I can imagine Insects being a huge part of why that extra hair is important. I have been close to some cows in the Alms (relative's farm and such, don't get close to cows you're not allowed to) and in the summer especially the flies would always try to get to their eyes. No matter what the owners tried, there would always be some flys there. (Although I was never told how bad the impact of those flies were, since I was a child back then and those relatives could've tried to "protect" me from being upset)
Thank u so very very much for explaining the bangs. This animals can't use a hand to wipe away anything bothering their eyes, I understand now the need for the hair. God takes care of his creatures. Appreciate explaining this . Love ur videos dear sir. All farmers should be like u God bless u...and allll that family
Some people just don’t understand why, animals have certain types of things like longer hair over their eyes. Your dealing with domesticated animal lovers, keep doing your thing my brother, it’s a pleasure for us to watch ! Great stuff !
Beautiful cows. A man here in Ohio has had a herd of these since back in the seventies. I often drive by just to look at them. Another man nearby raises Bison. Has about 40 of them.
Fun fact, highland cattle are the only breed of cattle with their own name for a group… all other cattle are found in herds, but highland cattle come in “folds”.. named after a small stone structure the crofters would keep them in during bad storms
Love these creatures. My uncle had a pair of highlands cows until he got to old to maintain the property. My goal is to buy a property where I can have various animals including one.
I knew I had heard the word « Dossan » before! I have a book of Gaelic music written by an Irishman named Packie Manus Byrne. It’s called « A Dossan of Heather » and says that Dossan means « tuft « in English.
I love the way his head twitches when you hit a sweet spot. "Oh, yeah, right there!" The hair protects their eyes from injury & dirt...Love his chewing...chew-chew-chew, swallow, pause, "urp!", chew-chew...😂
Thank you for sharing your knowledge I may never own one of your beautiful cows but it is nice to learn and increase my knowledge. I love to watch you care for them. I know a neighbor tried to cut the mane over her quarter horses eyes and the horse broke his halter and reared up on her on top of that she was trying to use electric shears,, not a good out come. It is better to ask someone like you that has knowledge than to do something stupid. Thank you so much for the lesson.
