Sadly we're no longer aboard the Outremer 55 Moonshot. Deadlines and destinations do not mix well aboard a cruising boat. We're going to shift gears to hopefully make everyone happy.
Nobody died! You took a calculated risk and when you saw it wasn't working you revised the plan. Don't be too hard on yourself. The rest of us aspiring captains need an attainable goal and role model to look up to. If perfection is the standard we may as well quit now. I appreciate that you two are not perfect! Feel better soon, Megan! 🥰
You didn't make a mistake. You did what all GOOD captains do. You constantly reassessed the situation, evaluated the risks and rewards, and made a decision that was in the best interest of the crew and the boat. That is exactly how it should go, every time. Job well done.
I fully agree. You did make the right call, ocean sailing and being ill didn't match well. And it shows you staying authentic and putting yourself first. Also a big compliment, You are one of the only channels left that didn't turn into a boat manufacturer commercial channel.
This sounds like an apology video and there is ABSOLUTELY no reason for it to be that. You got sick. You are working at getting better. You MUST take care of yourself FIRST or there will be no more O'Kelly videos for us to enjoy. Rest and recover. Take the time you need now so you (and the rest of us) can enjoy where you end up. Looking forward to seeing you on the boat, where ever that may be. In the meantime, take whatever time you need to get better.
Hmm , but , one thing , if you leave her for a few weeks , , crossing ?? Hmm. I kind of wondering, . You think maybe there's a chance she'll forget you ? ..
You chose to put family health first which shows a huge amount of maturity in your decision-making, which is even more remarkable in the face of pressure to deliver (perceived or otherwise) for Outremer and your online audience!
@@TheOKellys not a mistake, just an incomplete interpretation of a situation. When more data became available, you reassessed and tacked, very much like you would if you expected wind from one direction only to have it come from another. It will work out.....and for the best....it always does. In the meantime, rest, eat well and take care of yourselves.
I thought about all this on the 1st video you guys posted about this trip. I've done some of this crazy deadline crossings professionally. This kind of trips that imply going no matter what do not match your way of life and of cruising. It goes almost entirely against your believes and way of life. What I love most about your videos is the relaxation and the positivity about sailing and cruising around. You guys are welcome to visit us here in Portugal since you're so close. I'm happy to give you a tour around here. Wish you guys all the best!
I think you know us very well. We would love to take you up on the generous offer. Unfortunately, we have run out of visa time. We will return and accept your hospitality.
Definitely a respectful decision- as you know from the aviation world, 'get-there-itis' can be a dangerous affliction- good luck to Nick and the rest of the crew!!
Thank you. Yes, plans have killed a lot of pilots. Thankfully altitude not as much a consideration on boats. But plans have certainly killed a lot of sailing dreams....that has been our experience.
I’ve been so excited for this update. (I’ve also been looking at the weather) I’m so glad that you decided to take time out to look after you. To stop and rest. And wow, what an amazing looking place to rest and regroup. So important to listen to your body. Personally, I think that you have struck a really good balance that works for everyone involved - for both of you, and for the Outremer crew as well. 🙂🐿🌈❤️
Great call. Full support. Health first! (I shared my comment on Instagram, too.) Last year a friend shared this bit of wisdom, "The most dangerous piece of equipment on a boat is a calendar." Outremer's agenda is an understandable business decision, but set dates increase risk. Thank you for sharing this very human, loving, and compassionate decision with us. You continue to be wonderful role models. Megan and Nick, health, peace, and safe passage.
That saga continues. Love you're openness and sharing of your ups and downs. ::: healing vibes ::: to Megan and ::: stay healthy vibes ::: to Nick! Fingers crossed that your new plans work out as you hope and plan!
I am very proud of you guys for making the right decision on this. I am a retired ER Doctor and I can tell you that with this bug, persistent symptoms like this are harbinger of potential complications if you don't kick back, eat well and stay hydrated, and allow the illness to run it's course. The middle of the ocean is no place be if complications appear! Rest and recuperate and THEN rejoin the boat and enjoy good health and the best of a great voyage. Power up and go when it's time. God bless and I will continue to follow your Grand Tour.
Good decision. I had Covid twice and did not feel truly back to normal for several weeks after testing negative. It was hard enough to feel better at home on dry land. Trying to cope with this illness at sea in rough conditions would be a real mistake. Feel better! Good luck on the voyage, Nick.
I’ve always admired you as a team. And as a captain myself, I fully understand the challenges of making exciting decisions of passages and the comfort and security of your crew…specially when you’re tied to hip. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. Cheers and get better M!
There are a lot of sailing channels but yours is our favorite, and that's not because the sailing content is better, it's because of you two. We adore you both and we'll keep watching and rooting for you!!!
Tough circumstance. Intelligent choices. Of course wer're all with you in all the directions you'll take. It's great that Nick can step down a notch for the boat and still go. And Megan getting 'beached' is only temporary -- hope you feel better. Without a doubt the adventure continues....
Likely, this is all for the best. Recovering from the C sickness takes a while. Bashing around in high seas on low energy, still a bit sick, wet, cold, stressed, sleep deprived... yeah, none of that sounds like anything but a recipe for worse. Good call, guys. Lots of sleep and soup for you, Ms. M. Stay safe and have a ball, Nick.
Great update, reflecting good situational awareness and maritime decision making for a safe passage that works for the delivery crew, you and Outremer.
It is better to be safe than sorry and pushing yourself to the max while not being fully recovered can cause other problems. Nick deciding to step down when he knows that he cannot push the boat as much as needed is the sign of a true captain. This trip across the Atlantic will hone Nicks skills and make him an even better captain even though he will be crew.
Agh! I feel for you guys because I’ve been there. So many mixed emotions! Having this exciting opportunity, what will your viewers think?, your commitment to Outremere, questioning your ability to deliver, how will this effect your relationship with them etc etc. and all the while trying to care for your health. This tough decision shows how much wisdom and experience you both have. The stress and anxiety will hinder your ability to heal and recover...and could lead to long term issues. I’m proud of you and respect you even more that you made this decision! Hey, and don’t worry about us viewers if it’s too much burden. I’d be happy with just crude, unedited updates of the passage if you decide to post any at all. Megan, rest up and recover-Nick, enjoy this exciting experience to sail with some great sailors on an amazing boat!
One thing about the O'Kelly's is their calm (on video) and excellent decision-making. I could tell in previous episodes that you felt uncomfortable about the timeline of the crossing because you could not prepare adequately for the unexpected. Not your style. Your compromise here is perfect. Megan sacrifices her trip for the good of the team, and Nick learns the boat under the tutelage of an experienced captain. Team O'Kelly will make the most of the situation and come out ahead. Again, excellent decision-making.
As ever thank you both for the sharing your thoughts and honesty that you had overreached a bit. Really an utterly sensible set of decisions to look after both of you to allow one to recover from COVID and the other to support the Outremer goal of getting to Miami in time. Hopefully Megan will rejoin the boat in BVIs. Fair winds to Nick for the crossing. Looking forward to the ride on that beast and beauty of a catamaran.
Awesome call!! When I saw you were leaving under schedule, I wondered if it would work out (and was hopeful for everybody that it would). But, this just shows that you two have what it takes to give something a try... and if it doesn't work out, you will make the right call and adjust. But, the fact that you guys called it so quickly when things didn't improve was really awesome. You guys spotted that you weren't up to full health and adjusted.
Great opportunity to show everyone how to make the right decisions and adjust plans as needed. Excellent decision making process and outcome. Wishing you a fast recovery and safe travels for the two of you. Absence makes the heart grow fonder so enjoy your time of solitude - it makes the reunion that much sweeter!
When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier. And without a question, you guys made the right decision. Hope you're feeling better soon, Megan.
Always listen to your gut: if it’s not an “absolutely, YES!” It’s a “no.” Glad to see you listening to your intuition on what is right for you! Feel better fast!!❤
Anyone looking for pointers on how to keep a relationship together for a lifetime then review this video. There's more than one nugget here and it takes two mature people to "navigate those waters".
You guys speak so matter-of-factly and are always informative and thorough in your videos. Really enjoy your sailing/cruising insights. Easily one of the best out there. Take care. Shay
Though heartbreaking, this reality check shows us how smart-thinking sailors you both are! Thanks for being so earnest with us. Lots of good things your way. We ❤ you!
We are all here for your unique and relatable adventures, so this just adds to the anticipation and enjoyment as we learn of the complexities, outcomes, the highs the lows, the whole shebang. Wishing you safety and wellness on the next segment of your grand life adventures!
I was surprised they had you as captain in the first place. Given the schedule and the need to drive the boat hard, (race mode) AND it's still their boat, I would have thought they'd want someone really familiar with the boat and ready and able to race it across the Atlantic. No offense to you guys, but as cruisers, that's not your strength. So glad to hear you are going as crew! I discovered a long time ago the benefits of crewing and not owning. It's a lot cheaper as well, LOL. You are going to learn SO much from those guys as they push the boat hard. It will give you a lot of confidence in your next boat.
A good decision. I admire your ability to asses the situation at hand and act in the bast interest of your family, crew and corporate goals. Well done!
Good move Captain! Never a dull moment. Reminds me of a saying my old CFI told me when he let me loose into commercial aviation many decades ago. "Remember, as your career unfolds, if there is any doubt, there is NO doubt."
Love your authenticity and good judgement. My husband and I have been watching for years. You have entertained us, educated us (I particularly loved the catamaran vs monohull series) and, inspired us. Last fall we sold our house, bought a (bigger) sailboat and are well on our way from Rhode Island to Bahamas. We are loving it - a dream come true. And you two helped inspire us and prepare us. Thank u for sharing your adventure. Can’t wait to see where you go next. Get well soon Megan ❤.
That’s so awesome to hear!! Thank you for sharing and we’re very honored to play a small part in your big adventure! Enjoy the Bahamas maybe we’ll see you out there!
Always inspiring to see you guys going through life. Agree with other comments. Keep your spirits up. You make better decisions than most! Looking forward to following you as the adventure unfolds.
You two are such a rolemodel for honesty and living in the moment to me. Everyone can be glad to have you as friends. Megan, get healthy soon (I caught the same bug 3 weeks ago). It will take some time. Lot‘s of love to you both, Armin from Germany
Well... THAT nibbles! Absolutely the best and most responsible decision for all, given the current scenario. Take care of yourself momma bear, while papa speeds across the Atlantic. Fingers and toes crossed for safe passage(s) and a successful rendezvous in the BVI's!
I’m just happy to see you no matter what-both keep well. And this crazy weather no matter where you/we are, we’re experiencing crazy temps. Here in PNW it’s been in the teens. Se you soon, rest up and take great care!!! 🙏
Here’s wishing and hoping that you get better and can rejoin the boat at some point in the crossing. My wife and I can sympathize with you both because we are currently experiencing a similar situation with sickness and how long it has lasted. I got sick with the flu on December 21st, 2022 and just before new years I thought it was almost over, but then it turned into a severe cold with uncontrolled coughing. Then the day after New Years my wife caught the cold, probably from me, and now we both are trying to get over it and it’s hanging in there for all it’s worth. Get well and hope the journey is a success on many levels for both of you.
It is obvious you have made and will continue to make the right choices. Always make your health a priority. Many people have had symptoms from covid that lasted weeks months even years. Wishing you the both best.
Love u guys. In process of recovering from Covid & flu. Totally get it. Keep hanging in & get tx when needed (done Paxlovid, last day of antiflu today). Prayers for you both -Carter
Sorry to hear of the difficulties. It's part of the nomad full-timer life, but it's still hard on those days. I was actually going to comment on previous videos that lately your videos and titles were full of intensity, kind of hyped ! Sounds like you are on your way back to your flow, your journey is a great inspiration in resilience and optimism.
Deep respect... well decided.. i follow you since a good time... you are really sincere... nice, funny, earnest, thoughtful... thank you..enjoy a lot your videos... first i was sceptic... but you won me over
So many accidents and disasters at sea have started with distractions and pressure for time or unrelated things that have taken people's eyes off the ball. Good call on recognising it before the problem developed and you got a break! Well done! Hope you both get well soon!
Sorry it didn't go as planned , health comes first . Get well soon. I'm a retired shipmaster and full well know the difficulties of dealing with health problems with no doctor , you made the correct decision.
You may think the purpose of your videos is entertainment and sharing, na na, it’s about the lessons. Lessons on so many things. Cruising, boat management, marriage, and many many more.. This was the right call for many reasons. Thank you for sharing it with us..
With the “c” I had it, knocked me out. Couldn’t even get out of bed, the iver-m got me out of bed in 2 hrs. My experience…love to you both you made the right decision.
Good for you!! You must listen to yourselves and make the tough decisions. Your, our, health is all we truly have, and we have to take good care of it at all costs. I applaud you both!! Be safe always from the Philippines 💞💞
It sounds like you made the right call. When time, weather, and health are all saying the same thing, it’s probably good to listen. Megan, I hope you’re back to 100% soon. Nick, don’t fall off the boat 😉
The kinds of decisions I hate to make - REALLY want to, but you know deep down... don't. And then the pangs after the final decision... Of course the right call, and you'll both navigate just fine. Enjoy the extra baths!
I 100% agree with your decision... it takes time to get over the bug and recover your strength! I'm glad you're taking time to recover! I love your channel and you guys inspired me to buy my own boat and start my own channel. =-) Please take care of yourselves and keep the videos coming!
Hope you're feeling better and having a little fun in Austin... lots of great music and yummy food! (I'm a Texas gal!) and that you make it to Miami for the show!@@TheOKellys
Hi, I don't usually comment, but love your channel. Can't help thinking that the company would have made a much better, more positive decision to just give you the boat to do with as you wished, meanwhile making lovely, sunny and positive vlogs about it. Win/win situation, lol. You definitely made a sound decision there. I mean, (I am probably showing my ignorance here), but was wondering just how many of the intended customer base, would buy a brand new (expensive) catamaran, then immediately decide to sail across the Atlantic, in the middle of winter. With a deadline. And Covid. Anyone????
Good decision you two! Covid recovery can take a long time and two weeks out to sea could be dangerous-I applaud your cautious approach! Megan please do not get on an airplane until you are positive you are strong enough to make the long flight! Best of luck to both of you we look forward to the O’Kellys back in the Caribbean!
Considering all the factors between tight schedule, sailing, pushing a new vessel to meet said schedule, and getting over C19 you absolutely made the right decision. You two are awesome cruisers, racing a performance cat across an ocean Hell-bent for leather to meet a schedule is a different kind of "sailing." I know I certainly wouldn't be the person for that either, but there are those out there that live for that kind of excitement and thrilling challenge. I hope the vessel makes it's scheduled meet and I also hope you two get some more time on her when the schedules aren't so tight.
I am sad to see you guys suffer through this dreaded sickness. Having gone through the experience, I can attest that Covid is not just some flu. The weakness that followed affected my strength and mental clarity for weeks if not months. I hope you feel better soon and resume what you enjoy most in life, sailing!
Gosh, I’m glad you changed the plan. It’s better to rest and recover, and really get well. I hope more people will take a leaf from your book and realize it better to prioritize your health. It can be hard to realize you are sick when adrenaline is pushing you forward Some people don’t realize they are really sick until they land in the hospital
That's some very fine high quality common sense you've show us 👍 kudos to you and Team Outermer . I'm guessing that there will still be some videos of the passage to come ? . I find it very pleasurable to watch that boat "fly" across waters ! 😸. Best wishes to you Mrs Megan for a speedy full recovery 🙏😸😺
Wise move, friends! We've both had Covid, a while ago, and it laid us very low. It takes time to get over it--and some never completely do. Glad you put each others' health first. Be safe and sail on (when you're ready)! Cheers, Moose and Courtney
Guys, who among us on that terrace in FL would imagine this would be the situation. As a pilot, you know as well as we do the potential costs of keeping a schedule. Really appreciate the note and hope we cross paths or contrails at some point. Cheers!
One of the most important, and somewhat unique characteristics of your channel, is that you tell it like it is. Thank you. Sometimes the best laid plans just run amuck. Above all else, you must be comfortable with the situation you are in and the course you are taking. We're just being entertained, so don't worry about disappointing the viewers. Hopefully, Megan's health will come right, Nick's Atlantic crossing on the Outremer 55 will be another exciting adventure, and we will get our O'Kellys fix when the cake is baked. Travel safe, and Kia Kaha always.
You guys did great and made the best decision even if it wasn't the easiest but also admittimg to a mistake is even harder. You all should be proud of yourselves honestly. 😊
This a really good decision. I was wondering if maybe you were pushing your health. Like people said that darn Covid had me weak for months, I thought you must be unbelievably healthy to get over it that quickly. Now we know you are actually human and that is perfectly okay. Take care of yourselves, we are going to be here no matter what.
The fricken vid....really messed things up for a lot of people wayyyyyyyyy worse than for us. But it is a thing...gotta rest up and get over it to move on. Thank you for your patience and commitment to the rocky rollercoast road that The O'Kellys seems to have become.
Its good decision if your health is at stake. No need for apology or even explanation. Outremer has a lot hanging on this boat, especially since just a day ago AWEN (the other boat was rammed and is on shore in martinique, likely unable to make it to the show) I personally would stay as a team. Don't go NICK! No need for more " clarity " get well soon,
What a pair ! Why do I feel like I know you guys ? EXCELLENT CALL ~ many forget to give Mother Nature her respect. When this crew is less than 100% they simply adjust as required. It simply does not get any more professional than this. BIG HUG to you both.
Sorry to hear you'll be apart for part of this trip to states. Excited for Nick getting some Outremer Pro time, good stuff as you continue on from Miami. Loved to see you in NW Florida, Fort Walton Beach if possible.
In my opinion, the O'Kelly team made the right decision. Firstly, managing an Outremer 55 under the pressure of a tight imperative delivery deadline is not possible without knowing the boat for several months, with a few thousand nautical miles on the clock. Secondly, recovering from the Covid-19 (2024 version) is not something you can do in 2 days. I personally experienced this 4 weeks ago, after 7 days of being positive, but needing 2 more weeks to regain my muscle tone and full breathing capacity. Finally, current sea conditions between Gibraltar and the Canaries are complicated, just look at the Arkea Ultim Challenge competitors who passed through there 2 days ago on their 105 feet trimarans... In short, in my opinion you've made the right choice, the only responsible choice.
Plans and sailing are rarely a good idea, although I totally understand the situation here. But factoring in personal health, personal risk, & acknowledging limitations is the sign of a true Captain. Onward ho - to more healing & passage experience for the two of you. True life, not a fake tv show. ❤
