Like many first generation direct market livestock farmers around my age, the first farming book I read was "You Can Farm", by Joel Salatin. In fact, I didn't just read it, but I also highlighted it and read it more than once! Now that I'm 13 years into this farming journey, I have come to the realization that I'm breaking some of the rules. How that will turn out ... who knows!

Our of so Joel's book, "You Can Farm" of my favorite. We haven't registered our Jerseys yet, only transferred several. We buy our bulls as calves from one of the top 20 Jersey farms in the US. We're looking for cheese merit, A2A2, & polled. I know you didn't ask about cow registrations but with that pedigree we get what we want.

Is there a premium for A2A2 yet, or are you preparing for the future? It seems that most of the OV dairies I’ve heard of are selecting for those traits. I think the biggest benefit of registered Katahdin’s right now is that there are people keeping track of what they are working to improve.

it all depends on your farm/ranch goals, are you trying to sell breeding stock or meat animals or both, if the answer is both then go for registered, if just for meat you dont need any registered animals,,, me i like the variety of genetics you can select from registered stock that would improve your folds,, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

You figured it out eventually. “N S I P” is the correct way to say it.

Try it for a while, if it starts to eat into the profit then re-think it. Not everyone farms the way Joel says to farm and many are successful too. Bottom line, it’s your farm and only you know what works for you. You don’t graze cattle like Greg Judy, but you’re still raising beef to sell. You don’t pasture pigs like Joel, but you still have pork to sell. You’re feeding your family and you haven’t lost the farm to the bank, you must be doing something right.

We're going to give it a go for sure! Right now, I think the biggest benefit for our farm would be improved genetics. At the same time though, the farm where we purchased our registered ewes also was big enough so that they kept a registered flock and they also crossbred in order to get bigger lambs ... bigger lambs is something we need.

Joe is right, all that paperwork belongs on the same shelf as the toilet paper. Pure bread anything comes with quirks and it all looks the same in the freezer.

There is some truth to that … although we’ve raised pure breed animals on this farm from the very beginning. Probably 80-90% of the pigs have been … all the cattle … and most of the sheep. I’m not sure that was the best decision, but it is what we’ve done. Up until now though they haven’t been registered …
