Love the story behind you and Taylor moving to Madrid, then Mexico, and the comparisons between both countries! Thank you Alex! While I have never lived in Spain, I just moved to Mexico in November and I am loving it so far, even with my limited Spanish. I just started a 3-week Spanish immersion course and I am hoping I will walk away from that with a good foundation to keep building my language skills! All the best to you and Taylor! 😀

Having lived in Spain, I can say that it is not the land of opportunities. It's different to find Americans who are doing anything besides teaching English. I have never lived in Mexico, but I love it so much. There are so many amazing places. Enjoy Mexico!
@alex-wittman

This is a very good point & that's definitely part of the reason we left Spain. We knew a few people who were able to get other jobs in Spain after teaching English, but those individuals were few and far between. Our visas there were just for teaching English in our specific program & that was very limiting.

I loved the video as I can relate to your and Taylor's experience. I lived in Valencia for 6 months 27 years ago, way before it became an expat hotspot. That being said, Madrid is by far my favorite European city, where I feel most alive. And while I never lived there, I almost always manage to spend a week there whenever I go to Europe. So after a good 10 years of scouting different countries and cities in search of my retirement place, Spain and Mexico were the two top contenders. I settled on Mexico (for the time being at least) for many of the same reasons you mentioned, proximity to Canada is a key factor in case I need to fly back for whatever reason.

Great video. Your discussion points really make me think. I lived in Madrid for many many years.i lived in your off and on for 20 years. Madrid is still my fav. I took my daughter Madrid kicking and screaming and she left crying she loved it so much. It’s the most amazing city. After traveling internationally for work for 30+ years, I got a wicked respiratory infection that required several operations. The new normal is flying is not an option or I would be writing this from Madrid. With that said and watching your Lake Chapala video (and several others) I’m heading to Mexico in a car. Actually packing right now! So excited. I have to be honest, the portion of my mind that’s an adventurous person is still alive and well. Other than considerable scar tissue from the surgeries my health is perfect. Because you will not shut up about Guadalajara we are now on the fence. Some friends of mine just got back from Guadalajara and they believe I would love it there as well. My wife does not really care but I believe Lake Chapala will be a bit slow for us. We are going to travel around a bit. I’m driving to Cabo and she’s flying. After a few days , we are heading to La Paz to catch the ferry to the mainland (Mazatlan) then ease over to Guadalajara and Lake Chapala before heading to Morelia. The plan is to stay in Morelia for a couple of weeks before heading to Vancouver BC. We might reverse the trip and hit Cabo last. It really depends on the weather, Morelia seems like an amazing place as well. Love your channel and all the great info. Your energy and sense of style immediately attracted me to the channel. My wife says “she’s Spanish!”

Thanks for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful comment! If you love Madrid & the offerings of big city life, then there's a chance that the Lake Chapala area might be a little too sleepy...so definitely check out Guadalajara! I only spent a long weekend in Morelia, but I really liked it there (architecturally it reminded me of Santiago de Compostela in the north of Spain). Wishing you all the best with your trip--it sounds like an awesome itinerary! Safe travels!

City-wise (architecture, location, climate, transportation, size, variety, safety, social life, parks) Madrid is by far my favorite in the entire world. Sadly in-person service isn't great, online platforms are worse, and job opportunities are not that great unless you are in healthcare. I really want to return one day but for now I feel like it's easier to make money and have career opportunities elsewhere.

I live in Spain and will not move to Mexico. The drinking water is too polluted and I get horribly sick in Mexico plus as a single woman I feel much safer in Spain. I don't stick out because I speak Spanish with an accent. In Spain no one cares. In Mexico I am much more noticeable and sometimes targeted as a gringa with some spare cash. In Spain I can get a very good bottle of wine for under $5. In Mexico wine is expensive and little variety. The cost of living in inland Spain is incredibly low. I easily live on $1200 a month. No, I don't live in Madrid and I don't want to live in any big city. I love living in the Andalucían mountains. I can drive my car for hundreds of miles and never see a pothole in Spain or get stopped by police. No worries about getting kidnapped either. I bought a 4,000 sq ft beautiful home for $50,000. Americans are not moving here in droves so prices aren't going up and no one resents me. I love Mexican food and the people. I love Spain too. Spain suits me better.

There's actually a fairly large variety of wines in Mexico in any large city with mid to upper tier grocery stores. And in the wine regions of Mexico. All else is subjective and objective. Mexico is the 3rd most visited country in the world receiving anywhere from 30-40 million tourists a year and another million or so expats. And without incident. As safety goes, just depends on where you are. Most regions are safe. Just stick to large cities, beach cities, or UNESCO colonial cities and towns and it's pretty tranquil very quiet. Roads though yeah. You do you.

The homicide rate in the USA is 6.38 per 100,000 inhabitants, the homicide rate in Mexico is 26, 38 and in Spain it is 0.61. The Human Development Index of the USA is 0.921, that of Mexico is 0.779 and that of Spain is 0.904. Life expectancy in the USA is 76.33 years, in Mexico 75.17 and in Spain 82.8. The poverty index of the USA is 12.8, that of Mexico is 37.6 and that of Spain is 20.2. The GENI index that marks inequality is 39.8 in the United States, Mexico is 45.4 and in Spain 34.9. These are the objective data, another thing is the different tastes of each person and the different ways of life. I have traveled, only as a tourist, once to Mexico and twice to the United States and therefore my opinion about the way of life there is very partial. I would never live in the United States because of its individualism and the culture of using the car for everything, but between living in the United States and Mexico, as a middle class, I would choose the United States. Mexico is among the most unequal and insecure countries in the world, two very important questions for me.

Health care is definitely something to consider when deciding where in the world you want to live. I've been very please with my experiences so far in Mexico (routine doctor and dentist visits). In my case, the cost of health insurance in the US would make it much harder for me to live in the US and be self-employed. I also had very good experiences with the healthcare system in Spain!

The quality of health care is excellent in Mexico. Going bankrupt due to health costs is unknown in Mexico.

I’m 60. My husband is 70. We’ve kept his Medicare in the U.S., of course. And I have Obamacare in the U.S. But, we’ve had several health issues in Mexico. One was my husband and was a near death motorcycle accident. The care in Ajijic and Guadalajara was first class. The costs quite affordable. It was an emergency situation, so of course, going back to the U.S. and using his Medicare wasn’t an option. But, we have nothing but good things to say about our experience. 7 days in a hospital. 6 hour surgery with 4 surgeons, 8 weeks of rehab. 9 titanium plates in his body. $18,000 This included all medications also.. He’s back to playing tennis 3 times a week. So they did something right.
