Wow, rewatching this video 7 years later brings back the feels and the news about 2 more Dresden Files coming out in 2020 is just HYPE!!!!! If either of you are reading this you should totally create more videos like this.

As much as I love the Dresden Files (and this is coming from someone who's reread the series at least 4x and listened to the audiobooks at least 2x), even I'll admit that the first 2 books may be entertaining, but are a bit shaky in terms of quality. But starting from Grave Peril (#3), the mythology really starts to expand, stakes are significantly raised, and everything starts getting much better. Book 3 and beyond, the series keeps improving until it reaches pure awesomeness.

He thought Butters and the Denarians got development back in 2013. I wonder if he's read Skin Games yet. Also, my favorite quote from Changes has to be, "I used the knife. I saved a child. I won a war. God forgive me."

My favourite moments are whenever Harry's brain-to-mouth filter gets turned off because he's in one shitty situation or another. As soon as he's put under pressure (Which, to be honest, is most of the time) his mouth starts running and the scene instantly becomes hilarious as he spouts off to the shambling horror of the week.

I find it funny that Peabody surprised you so much Sean, just because I was pointing my finger at Peabody as soon as he was introduced. Seriously I saw him, saw that he was the guy who handled all the files, and said "yup, gotta be him." Not sure if it was a matter of never trusting the quiet ones, or if I just hate bureaucrats, but I saw peabody and immediately proceeded to wait all book for him to be outed. So while you were thinking "Oh geez that's crazy" I was just yelling "I knew it had to be him!" ...You know now that I think about it I think I liked Peabody for it because he reminded me of Butters, only totally unpleasant.
@EilerPoulsen

Had a similar vibe from Peabody, however, considering how much I had been mislead by Jim Butcher throughout the series I could not get myself to believe the traitor being him. It was simply too obvious so I kinda got surprised by the revelation.

Susan doesn't feed on Dresden and become a Red Court vamp. This is where Martin also like Susan which is a partial red court vampire pulls the rug out of Susan & Dresden nearly winning streak and puts a knife to Susan's throat. We find out that Martin is a triple agent and betrays Dresden & Susan by telling the Red Court King where Dresden's daughter was. Setting the entire blood ritual to kill Dresden entire bloodline. Enraging Susan who turns and feeds on Martin killing him starting the final transformation into a Red Court vampire and then Dresden slits Susan's throat turning the ritual and destroying the entire Red Court Vamps except maybe the youngest vampires at the time. Susan being literally newly made was pretty much the youngest so I'm pretty sure not too many Red Courts out there.

If you want to talk about threads.... In the third book Harry's god mother the Leanansidhe asks Michael Carpenter for his first born child. At this point we dont even know Michael's children names or how many he has. It turns out his first born child is Molly. Now let that sink in for awhile...

I see a lot of comments where people tell new readers of the Dresden series to skip the 1st 2 books and in wholeheartedly DISAGREE! The 1st 2 are arguably the worst of the series, but that doesn't mean they're bad books. Yes by the 3rd book Jim Butcher starts finding his footing as a writer and each book gets progressively better. Yet the first 2 books and the series as a whole is a cohesive storyline. There's a lot of narrative and characters that area introduced and play huge parts into the series that should not be missed. Like for example TOOT-TOOT. As they mention in the video how a character kind of starts out as a small character and ends up becoming a huge and very interesting as the series progresses. Who wants to know why TOOT keeps getting bigger? I have my theory. Which is the more followers Toot gets the more powerful he becomes. Also he's hilarious and an adorably naive character. Karrin Murphy is another character also Morgan. These characters are from the very beginning and play pivotal roles through out the series. Do not skip the first 2 books. Stick with them and you will eventually fall in love with the series as I did. I heard about the series about 4 years ago after many of the books were out and ample prodding from a friend to pick them up and check them out. Finally I broke down and did something I dont recommend and downloaded the 1st off the Internet bc I didn't want to pay for a book I didn't like. After reading the 1st book I immediate bought all the books that were available in hardback up to Changes and binge read them in about a month. I've even got all the short stories and comics. The Dresden Series is my favorite series of all time.

djkoz78 I think your right about why Toot-toot is getting bigger, I think word of Jim is that because Toot hitched his train to Harry as head of the Za-lord's guard and it is his increasing status as the leader of (formerly) wild fae loyal to Harry (or at least the Pizza he pays them) that is responsible for his growth.

Quite honestly, I recall there being an episode where TV Dresden literally hides in the corner and waits for the problem to solve itself. That is in no way similar to book Dresden.

Give it to HBO. Seriously. They would do so well with Dresden Files. They literally got every single character wrong in the show. Murphy was a tiny redhead who wore a suit. Susan was a dumb blond...if I remember correctly Bianca and Dresden were dating or some shit. Good thing the series' is still going and I am just starting Skin Game :D

I did like Morgan's character though, and even though from the book describes him as having long hair and I assume caucasian [for a few reasons not least the name Donald [Gaelic origins] Morgan [Welsh origins], I picture him as Conrad Coates portrayed him in the series. I also liked the tv series use on a hockey stick for Dresden's staff and a drumstick for his blasting rod, even though no such instance took place in any of the books, I almost prefer them.

I want to know more about we Hellhound. We know he is a scion, but when Dresden looks upon him with the sight he sees an image of Kincaid, overlayed with an image of a huge hulking deformed demon but also overlayed on top of that he sees a very faint image of Death with a Scythe. We also know very little of the Hellhound's back story. All we know is he was an assassin for the true Dracula not Vlad the Impaler (which I believe they refer to Vlad as his sniffling son and much less powerful)

You say this, but people (Maybe not you) spend $60 on a game that last not even half the time. I can read a book like this in a day no problem (As I have been reading for a long time now, and a book like this is a real page turner) but I don't consider the $10 wasted, and would much rather buy 6 (Almost 7) Dresden files books, then buy Sim City 5. I don't have to deal with EA's BS, or any micro transactions nickel and diming me.. Worth every penny. Heck it takes more to fill up my gas tank.
@IrradiatedOne

Jim Butcher has two things down. One is everything has "Consequences" (Physically, mentally, even socially) it isn't some hero just slashing through his enemy. Second.. Poor Dresden always seems to gets beat down in some way throughout the series, but keeps going till he solves the case. The TV show was a bit campy, but after reading I am not sure if they even could show on TV heh.. Finally if you like this series you might want to check out the Nightsiders Series
@Slimcognito2012

By your logic we should all only buy Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. I reread things, so I don't really have your problem, and I attribute the fact that you can read them so quickly to the good pacing that Jim Butcher sets up. I'd rather read a book in two nights (or one if I don't sleep) and have an exhilarating ride than find myself almost passing out from boredom (looks carefully away from Crossroads of Twilight). DISCLAIMER: I love WoT, but seriously guys.

To be perfectly honest, the first two books weren't especially well written, though they have important plot detail that will come up later on in the series. Grave Peril is where the series really starts picking up steam, so if you feel you can't get through Storm Front and Fool Moon, you can always skip ahead. I would also suggest picking up the short story collection Side Jobs and reading the stories in chronological order with the novels.
@Rob7030
@Rob7030 11 лет назад
It actually had *very* little to do with the book series. None of the stories had relations to the books until the 8th episode, which was somewhat based on the first book. If the show were more tightly based on the book series, I think it could have gone places, but the tone and storylines were just... Waaaayyyy off from what we're used to in the books. It just didn't seem like Dresden.
@CrippledMerc

There was a tv series on the Sci Fi channel called The Dresden Files that was based off the book series. It was a single season of 12 episodes that ran from January to April of 2007. That information came from Wikipedia but I checked and the full season is available on Netflix and I would assume it would be on Hulu as well but I don't use it so I can't check. It seems as though this series is based on the first book seeing as how the 8th episode is named Storm Front.

So, I've heard about this series many times from watching Day9's other videos, but each time I was in the middle of reading something else and I'd always forget about it. But, I just finished reading The Secretist, Part Two so I'm happy to say that I have downloaded Storm Front and will begin reading it tonight. I really hope that I get so immersed to the point where I can't put it down. Thanks for the video and suggestion guys, I can't wait for the next one.

If she is really worth it, follow these simple instructions! If she doesn't answer, don't try to talk/text her yet. Try to talk to her a lot in Sunday school,but don't be annoying about it. You'll become friends that way. Once you got that down, very casually ask if she want to do something sometime. (Key word casually)But make sure you know what exactly you'll be doing before you ask her. (say out to the movies, or bowling or something. never just say "something") Reply if you want more advice.

I love the Dresden Files, but I actually think the reveal of Wizard Peabody was one of the weaker ones. Maybe it's just because I've been reading his books and gotten used to his style, but as soon as Peabody was introduced, I pretty much knew he would be the one. The fact that he's introduced in the same book that he turns traitor, plus the bit of dialogue he shares with Dresden then made it glaringly obvious to me.

the reason that i think Harry Dresden is such a cool character is that in 14 books he has NEVER gotten the recognition he deserves. It's never said out loud or mentioned but he has continually shielded Chicago and the world with his own body, getting beaten, shot, burned, cut and tortured both in a physical sense and a mental one. Yet never once has he given up. All of his friends take him for granted, he works so hard and asks for so little, he my definition of a hero.

The series was met with mixed reaction from fans. The episode you refer to is a barebones version of book one. Really? I always viewed the first two as the weakest in the series. The writing really begins to develop much more after all of that and begins to string together events that begin to develop in much later novels. I like every new novel more than the one that precedes it, up until Changes of course.

My problem with the Dresdon Files is that it is rather expensive for a book when you look at the price per hour. It is about $10 for a book that is read in two evenings. I can get plenty of other books for $15-$20 that last 14 to 30 nights. Tl:Dr -- Dresdon books are too short for the cost.

Hellblazer is a darker series, with more serious themes and undertones compared to the Dresden files. Honestly, I enjoy both, and love the way both series treat fantasy in a modern setting. You should give the first book (Storm Front) a shot and see if you like it. My two cents, hope you don't mind.

And this is why Day9 is still my favorite e-celebrity. Dresden Files is far and away my favorite book series of all time.

Theoretically, Harry's "Doom of Damocles" gets lifted in Book 1. At least, that is what was SAID. However, Harry doesn't feel like there is a serious dent in how he is treated until "Dead Beat," when... * * * * * Harry gets promoted to Warden. That seems to be the FIRST time that someone in the White Council acknowledges that Harry - Darth Vader though some have marked him out to be - is on THEIR side. Morgan puts up a great deal of fuss over this, but it appears that Morgan no longer sandbags Harry from then until his end.

I sadly was introduced to Dresden Files by the Anthology book of GRRM Dangerous Women, who includes Bombshell short story, so my first contact with Dresden Files spoiled both Change and Ghost Story. I quite enjoyed the ride, but when I read Change I knew what to expect

Great series, definitely better than the Malloreon although Eddings is definitely an excellent writer all the same.

HUGE fan of the book series and its amazing.... Do yall not know that it had a TV show starring paul blackthorne or are we writing it off for being so bad especially compared to the books? Just threw me since the FIRST comment is "never a TV show"

Never read the book but, as a Christian man: Thank you Mr. Butcher for being respectful to the Christian faith.

An awesome series with a ridiculous amount of books, each better than the last? Terry Pratchett's Discworld! :D

Soooooo what about the TV show ? I just heard they changed a lot and it was rather flat compared to the books.

There is a TV show based on The Dresden Files books, but story wise it has nothing to do with the book series.

because it was poorly done, and the show felt tacky, underdone and didn't glorify the story made in the boks

If he likes cats, he needs to read Jim's "Cinder Spires". Mafia cats. With opposable thumbs. And matches.

It's because people who read the books hated the show. It was massively different and not nearly as good =P
