Help your dynamics and expression with a little bit of low-gain overdrive
Life too short for long RU-vid videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! In this episode we explore the world of low-gain overdrive. Typically the result of turning up a guitar amp to the point of low overdrive, we now have an almost endless selection of pedals to help do the job.
However you achieve it, the point is that low-gain overdrive is absolutely, fundamentally important to dynamic guitar tone and playing. Fancy some of that?
Enjoy the show!

I just got a Lightspeed, and the weird thing is that while there's nothing wrong with these demos, the experience of playing it is so much more significant than hearing it. Not many pedals I can say that about.

I've bought garments before but I got my first sets of TPS strings in the post today and I just want to say thanks. I can't justify a D & M Drive or a Harmonious Monk, but the customer experience just for strings is wonderful and I don't feel like I'm missing out at all. The Because Tone box, hand written and personalised thank you card, stickers, tissue paper wrapping, and, last but not least, That Pedal Tape! Thank you to Catherine and the whole team. Keep up the stellar work, chaps, chapettes and chapx's.

Thanks guys for another great episode and insight into gain staging. Your vids, over the years, has moved me to change my entire approach. The logical extension is my Pedalboard into a Wet-Dry setup, but I've also used the Line 6 Helix since its inception. It allows me to experiment in a number of ways... including stacking low-gain pedals. The combination has allowed me to transform my sound and approach.... ALL thanks to you. Thanks for all you do.

The brilliance of TPS and @JHS and a few other similar shows is that I as a hobbist player wouldn't have this many gear conversations in 100 lifetimes with staff at the local shop. Even though I have some EXCELLENT shops in the Detroit area, I'd have to LIVE THERE to learn all this information. Then there are people all over the globe that don't even have access to good local shops. For ever small criticism I've ever had for these shows there are 100 or 1,000 compliments I could give. You guys do an invaluable service to the whole planet of guitar players, and its all recorded for posterity. Mega Bravo to all.

Every pedal sounded glorious. Not one bad tone the entire episode. I love how you can stack these pedals to create some really overdriven tones however the foundation of the tone remains the same. There is no shock to the ears so your brain never has to try and adjust to any abrupt change. Looking for a Red Snapper now on Reverb. Hard to come by. Well done guys!!

Great show! As someone who always tended towards the extremes of “as clean as possible” or “as dirty as possible”, this is an area I’m continually trying to get a better handle on. Also, the more I listen to you guys talking about how you’d use the more esoteric controls on pedals, the more I feel like I’m starting to understand the kind of things the Boss DA-2, DS-1X, & OD-1X are trying to dynamically adjust…and why I may always fine myself drawn back to them.

It’s always nice to see some of my personal pedal choices make appearances on the show, especially when we use them the same way. I juice my Lightspeed with a RYRA Klone (both set pretty mild), when stacked they can sound absolutely FEROCIOUS!!! I put the Benson pre amp after to bring some lost note definition back in and magic!!! It’s almost as if I watch a ton of this show….!

The very heart of my latest daily-drive tone, is a Fulldrive mosfet II in front of an Mi Audio Crunch-Box... both set really low gain, each having a wonderful clarity with glistening distortions - these have taken over from a Tubescreamer in front of a Guv'nor. It has long, long been an approach of mine, to stack in this way, as you have two wonderful individual drives that cover a huge range, and a MASSIVE tower of iron when both are engaged, smashing all the way to huge thrash-levels of drive when the boost (also set minimally) is engaged on the Fulldrive for that... >smack smack smack of gum-chewing< ...extra push over the cliff, you know... GREAT EPISODE, as ever! I am an old doofus on guitar, but I STILL get lots out of the content you guys upload. I thank you for it. Love it.

Love this video and several parts of it apply to me, lol. I keep a mjolnir always on (so I’m one of those guys you mentioned) for dynamics, then I have both a Lightspeed and Broadcast on the main board. On the grab n go board I keep a twin twelve by JHs always on (clean setting, gain around 10 o’clock) and stack that with a 385 when I need some dirt. I totally agree it’s all about touch sensitivity and dynamics and it’s amazing what pairing a few together can do. Loved the episode, love you and hope all is well my friends!!!

Great show guys (as usual). I use my BD2 with the gain set to 12.00, and a DS1 in front with the gain on zero. These are "stay on" pedals - all is controlled from the guitar volume knob and playing dynamics. I like the "transparency" of the pedals - they just bring out the flavour of my amps. Works for me :)

Great show, gents. The BD-2 - plain version - was the first OD I bought, only a few years back, just for the hell of it. Love the thing and now I've added a few more, mainly for use in my "clean" channel for some extra flavours. Next drive, I'm wanting the Lightspeed, which I've played and loved but don't yet own. With luck and a strong wind behind me, a couple of months should see me right.

Great episode. I set almost all my pedals for that "edgy" gain level, where it's clean(ish) with lighter picking, but breaks up when you dig. The real magic comes when you slam a boost or another "edgy" pedal into the first one. Gain stacking lives in this region of the gain dial.

Awesome Show Dan & Mick love your videos. For me the ODR-C gets the job done. I use mine at 18v for more headroom with tte O.D.C knob to smoothe out the Germanium rangemaster that I runinto it. You will get an insanely dynamic tone the rangemaster reacts so sensitive to you picking and guitar volume poti. the ODR-C smoothes everything out and it will also do the 1000hz klon thing if you want it. Killer tone day in day out

Such a great place to be. Enough volume, dynamics and overdrive where your playing changes level of compression but you still have clean to. Volume level where your guitar starts resonating more but you are not in the feedback and it feels alive. Enough dynamics to pop that winning note with enough compression to still sound musical and not to brutal. I’ve loved light speed always though biggest surprise here, for me that is, is the wazacraft bd 2. I still have somewhere normal version. Maybe time to get this one to.

Great video and playing, lads! I play high-gain, neoclassical metal and I just use a Wampler Tumnus these days, ever so slightly on, just to tighten everything up and for further tone shaping. A lot of people do not understand the subtleties that a little more tone from a pedal can give them! It is not always about pushing the amp more, or everything on ten!!! I've been fortunate to have been able to invest in some very nice amps in the last several years, and have found that I really love to use just boosts or drive pedals with very little gain. Great show guys. Nice selection of pedals and some great tones. For me low gain is where it's at and then stacking pedals to give tonal variance. I have many options but currently I love the sound of Ryra klone > Vertex Steel Singer or a Hudson Broadcast. The sound remains 'open' and the sound of the guitar and it's dynamics are able to shine through, whether Les Paul, Tele, SG, or Strat. I find the sound so pleasing I rarely want to add any mod/ delay, maybe just add a splash of Meris Mercury 7.

APPROVE!! Recently I dug out all my drive pedals and chained them all up. Running them at low drive settings allows me to get a rainbow of different dynamic dirt flavors when I play them single, and to go full OD / crunch / Distortion when I stack them. BTW, Rat circuits sound great at low drive levels, and really enjoy being pushed around to get much hotter sounds.

You can get a lot of these sounds with many pedals/combinations, it just takes some experimenting to find what sounds good to you. But Dan's tele is magical. Sound wise, of course, but his playing with that instrument, very special. Thanks. PS to Mick: your new strat sounds great, also.

Low gain overdrives are always enough to punch through a mix and get a good amount of crunch. You guys taught me that you don't need to crank the gain on your overdrive pedal to get most dirt tones. It really helps push through a mix and add dynamic range. Keep teaching us things dudes! Btw the King of Tone is still the best low-medium gain drive of all time. Would love to hear Dan play it more often :)

LOL this is great I love the Greer Lightspeed... this last weekend I made some changes to my pedal board and have my ODR-1 (set to a heavier drive tone) into my Lightspeed (drive anywhere between 11 - 1 o'clock) and MAN that's my new tone...

Just bought.a Thorpy Peacekeeper that arrived a couple of days ago which I'm beginning to really love. Couldn't have timed it better. I can't think of many pedals that clean up like a Blues Driver when you roll back the volume though, inasmuch as you just don't have to roll back very far to get the clean from a reasonable level of gain.

red snapper is my favorite drive of all time. incredible low gain drive, also is pretty great at doing the medium drive area.

I remember years ago watching Mick and Pete on Guitar Paridisio talking about the DOD Looking Glass. That pedal taught me to appreciate stacking low gain pedals with it being last in my chain and always on. This episode reminded me why I would add another low gain pedal rather that turning the gain on a pedal up (and there goes another $300 on a pedal)

ME too has the Looking Glass last: adds a very nice touch to my low gain ped system just like You described! at the end it also can be a booster of overall tone...

I just acquired a Fairfield Electronics Barbershop pedal, and it has replaced my Mythos Wildwood Mjolnir. I run either a Friedman Smallbox, a JHS Packrat or Snouse Black Box through it into a clean Mesa Fillmore, and it really makes them sing!

Gotta be honest, I'd never thought of using a Klon-style circuit as a low-gain overdrive. Usually as a boost or a mid-to-high gain overdrive/distortion for lead tones. You guys have me messing around with my Tumnus Deluxe at low gain settings now! Always learning something new from you guys!

Wow, I'm not nearly finished with all the times I'm going to watch and hear this. You both just slay me. I've been around since the GigRig versions of this channel. So, what you have done in this episode is just beyond. Thank you both for coming back to these most critical themes that have been explored from the start, but are made so fresh and relevent in these past few vids. I do not know where I'd be w/o you both. Mick: ;your bday is approaching. It is not lost on me that in a universe like this, you and my wife of 25 years were literally born on the same day. Mind and heart blowing reality regarding how and who you just love. Best to you both - and best to the lovers of TPS!! We are born into families and we choose another kind of family along our journey. For me, TPS is that wondorouse thing that I found myself within.
