Reflections on the conversation: This made me think of the importance of wielding language as a weapon in revolutionary / anti-systemic struggles / movements. Language is critical because it’s an expression of our politic. When we make concessions to bend our language to the sensibilities of the disembodied “common (wo)man”, what we’re really doing is watering down our politics to be palatable to ruling class ideology, which determines the “sensibilities of the common man”. The goal should not be to be palatable to the sensibility of the “common person” (ie to “conform” as mentioned in the discussion), but to CHANGE their sensibilities / ideology, which requires challenging ruling class hegemonic ideology, which requires a clear articulation of our own politic and revolutionary ideology (not sufficient, but necessary), which is why defending our militant language is important.

Sad to have missed this live but what a lovely and thoughtful conversation. So, so heartening. Also... can I place my vote for the use of the phrase "so-called Canada" here? I love that!

Some critical Indigenous grounded intellectuals use in writing and speech terms such as so called canada, so called guatemala, so called chile, so called the united states, etc. Because Indigenous peoples had names for their/our lands and territories.
