In a world quick to label and segregate by age, Marcus Schögel, a seasoned professor at the University of St. Gallen, challenges the narrative. Drawing from his firsthand experiences with GenZ and Y in the classroom, and his journey through the generational landscape as a GenXer, Schögel debunks common myths surrounding generational clashes. With engaging anecdotes and evidence, he advocates for a more nuanced understanding that transcends stereotypes, urging all generations to harness the power of diversity for a more inclusive future.
Prof. Dr. Marcus Schögel, Institute of Marketing and Customer Insight at the University of St. Gallen (IMC-HSG), Switzerland, is focusing in interaction and exchange-based strategies for superior customer experiences. With a background in business administration, he earned his PhD in 1997 and habilitated in 2004, focusing on multichannel management and relational capabilities in marketing. Since 2009, he has been a senior lecturer at the university, also serving as the academic director of the Master in Marketing Management program and leading the competence center for Customer Centricity in Asia at the Singapore Institute for Management (SGI-HSG). He has published over 130 papers, articles, and books on marketing topics, including a textbook on "Distribution Management." Schögel is an active member of prestigious marketing associations and holds leadership roles in various academic and entrepreneurial initiatives, including co-founding companies like Marketing-Auditorium St. Gallen and FIELD 33, an AI-based venture. His newest book, "The Customer Experience Navigator," focuses on successful customer journey management and touchpoint innovations for corporations and their customers. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thanks! I am so sick of all the prejudices going along with these generational stereotypes. I am glad someone finally took a stance against that.

Very interesting speech. I recently listened through a seminar from a generation expert professor dude, and he said similar things. He used the US categories for base, but in European perspective defining new and in-between generations based on historical events (like influence of the Soviet Union, WW1 and WW2) and technology. He was speaking about how the environment (and restrictions) defined different values for different generations. These examples were used to ignite openness, help to understand and accept each other. He emphasized that these differences are not better or worse, just different.

Your reflection on the seminar highlights an essential aspect of understanding generational differences. It's fascinating to see how historical events and technological advancements shape the values and perspectives of each generation. Recognizing that these differences are not inherently better or worse, but simply different, fosters a more inclusive and empathetic society. By learning from these generational contexts, we can bridge gaps and cultivate mutual respect and understanding. It’s through this openness and acceptance that we truly appreciate the rich tapestry of human experience across time and cultures.

Take some responsibility for yourself. Blaming others won’t help you. Corporate America has made life difficult for everyone but the top 10%. Elon Musk doesn’t care about you. Mark Zuckerberg or Peter Thiel. Silicon Valley is all young. Don’t indict an entire generation for what is happening today. Republicans don’t care about young people either. They axed all kinds of help for GenX , Y and millennials , the poor. People of color. LGBTQ, and women. Read up.

They overpopulated earth the same as those before them? If there were only 600 million people now.. there'd be nothing to take accountability for.

I quit my last job because two of my managers could not stop talking about how lazy millennials are. Meanwhile half the team were millennials and working very hard. I decided I needed a more peaceful environment for myself.

Apt. I was having a conversation with two women yesterday, both of “different generations”. The younger said that the older generations could be happy in polygamous homes but not this generation. And I pointed out the fact that in fact people who are willing to be in polygamous homes can be found in every time since the earth has existed. The same people from yesterday are here now and will be here tomorrow.

Your conversation highlights a crucial truth about human nature and societal structures. While generational contexts might influence attitudes and behaviors, fundamental aspects of humanity, such as the capacity for polygamous relationships, persist through time. This observation underscores that while societal norms and values evolve, the diversity of human experiences and choices remains constant. It’s a reminder that understanding and respecting these enduring traits can help us connect across generations and appreciate the continuity of human behavior throughout history.

Thanx for the sharing. This is a good point of view to adopt but some extreme cases like my 97 years old neighbourg can be hard to encounter without generational prejudices. She is really from a alien epoch where children were daily walking 5 km to school in WOODEN SABOT on muddy dirt road. Peace & love

Your point about extreme generational differences is well-taken. It's true that bridging the gap between vastly different experiences, such as those of your 97-year-old neighbor, can be challenging. Understanding her perspective, shaped by a time when life was fundamentally different, requires patience and empathy. While her experiences might seem alien to us, they hold valuable lessons and insights. Embracing peace and love, as you mentioned, is key to overcoming generational prejudices and finding common ground despite these significant differences.

@@CibitiPro Thanx for your feedback. I appreciate your moral support but with my 97 neighbour, i gave up because she is loosing her mind and accusing everyboby for trying to kill her or rob her obsolete belongings. This is a sad situation, but i can't help her anymore, lost in her old cognitive buble. I only send her a card for Christmas by mail, as she loves reading all kind of written mediatic propaganda. Mine is personnalised. Peace & Love
