Why We Stopped Buying Badger Hair Shaving Brushes | Executive Shaving Company Statement

As from 22nd November 2019, The Executive Shaving Company will no longer be purchasing badger hair shaving brushes. Instead, we will promote and sell only animal friendly synthetic fibre shaving brushes.
A recent investigation by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) into the badger-hair industry, which supplies hair for makeup, shaving, and paintbrushes, revealed hellish living conditions, including badgers imprisoned in cramped wire cages. Wild animals kept in confinement often suffer from captivity-induced psychosis and gaping, untreated wounds. One badger was found to be missing a leg. At the slaughterhouse, a worker beat crying badgers over the head with a chair leg, and then slit their throats. One badger was still convulsing after his throat was cut.
After PETA shared the video footage with Procter & Gamble-which owns The Art of Shaving-Morphe, NARS, The New York Shaving Company, and several others, these companies made the decision to ban badger hair brushes. I understand that GB Kent a leading UK retailer of shaving brushes has also stopped buying in badger hair brushes.
The Executive Shaving Company has been told for many years by the Chinese manufactures of badger hair shaving brushes that the badgers were bred in captivity for their meat and the coat of the animal was a waste by-product of the meat. The PETA investigation has proved beyond a doubt that this is not the case. A quick search on the internet for the search term ‘badger killing for shaving brushes’ will reveal various horrific videos showing the appalling way these animals are bred and killed.
For the past five years The Executive Shaving Company has actively promoted synthetic fibre shaving brushes and as a result, sales on our website for synthetic fibre brushes are significantly higher than badger hair brushes. This blog post from October 2015 being a case in point.

Great business decision!! I started using badger brushes when I started wet shaving 11 years ago, being told they were the best. I tried synthetic after learning the horrible cruelty of the badgers 5 years ago, and its seriously a better brush all around. My synthetic doesn't need to pre soak in hot water, it had no break in time, doesn't smell the way animal hair brushes do, dries incredibly fast, and hasn't lost its shape or any bristles in the whole 5 years I've owned it. Many "purists" will say badger is the only way, but just because its the old way, doesn't mean its the right or best way. For me, synthetic is superior in every way, cruelty free, and a lot cheaper! I recommend synthetic all the way!

It should be noted that China produces the synthetic shaving brush knots/complete shaving brushes which are Chinese branded or for the OEM market (incl. UK shaving brush companies). Again shaving product companies need to source domestically or from countries which adopt ESG standards. Ideally all shaving product companies need to adopt a common stance in respect of this issue.

That’s a big business decision to make Brian and it’s good to hear you’ve made the right choice. I have badger hair brushes as I was under the ‘by product’ understanding. It pains me to hear of the stories of badgers in cages and being beaten to death like they are nothing and have no feelings. I wouldn’t be able to watch the videos. Are we certain that this is the case for the source of all badger hair? I guess a part of me hopes that although this happens it is not the norm. I suppose any chance that this was the case for a brush that was available to purchase then that’s enough reason to stop buying them. I do have a couple of synthetic brushes but I’m one that doesn’t like how they don’t soak/hold on to water like real hair. I can get a half decent lather but not as good. I’ve always used synthetic for travel though as they dry super quick. I have a Zenith horse hair brush which is a nice compromise, though the knots are often on the long side...and they can smell too, like horse funny enough 😊 Any way good on ya 👍

I absolutely support this. I have only used synthenic brushes so far (both Mühle). While a first generation a few years back was a bit stiff, the current silver tip fibre thing they have feels really nice on the skin. Now, it might be, that real badger hair feels even better (I wouldn't know), but at this point, the sythetic replacement have become so good, that the cruelty is not justifiable any more (if it ever was).

Having now used a synthetic shaving brush I realise that the badger brush previously used did in fact irritate my skin. I believe my synthetic is using the plisson brush. The synthetic is very soft on the skin but with a good backbone. Using the synthetic has meant a small change to my technique. Synthetic doesn't need to be soaked and now I just sprinkle a few drops of water in to the soap (Proraso) introducing the brush to the soap it generates a good lather. Therefore I can fully endorse your comments in respect of synthetic brush.

How I look at it is - what are the options? Boar and horse hair brushes. Or also synthetic brushes which are supposedly cruelty free - which means introducing more and more plastic into the environment, which in the long run is a silent killer. One can Read about micro plastics in oceans and every corner of earth. To avoid torture and cruelty to one animal I may end up affecting many more life forms for a very very long period of time! Also the industrial emissions for making these plastics... Just my way of looking at things YMMV 😜

I expect my synthetic brushes to last 20 years plus - a much longer lifespan than a badger brush. The handles or synthetic brushes and badger brushes are made from the same materials - wood, plastic, resin or metal alloy. No matter which way I cut the cake, synthetics come out best for the animals, the planet and my wallet. Brian.

The companies that continue to offer these products are taking advantage of their customers' ignorance. When it comes time to replace my brush - I will order through your site. Another aspect that many people do not think about is how dehumanizing many of these animal operations are to those who have to work in them. Humane and sensitive! Excellent philosophy. As for the remaining badger brushes; I think the animals who met such a cruel end; should at least be honored for their sacrifice thus using existing stock does not contribute to the past cruelty. What's done is done but going forward with a understanding of why this behaviour/action should be concluded and using the brushes forces human to confront their cruelty as well as a way to demonstrate the slain badgers lives did not end in completely in vain. This is my opinion of the matter.

I can get behind that... won't be buying a badger hair brush, or any animal hair brush for that matter if it involves killing or hurting an animal... I've tried all kinds of brushes and while some feel better than others, at the end of the day you can get a good lather with just about any brush

Hi Ivan, we decided to stop stocking all animal hair brushes and only stock synthetic brushes. Synthetic brushes perform just as well, don't shed hair, don't smell, are vegan friendly and don't involve harming any animals.

The badger brush I was gifted a decade ago is easily the scratchiest brush in my collection, so I say good riddance. Boar and synthetics are king. I’d like to see synthetics with a stiffness nearer to boar eventually.

There may be a limited market for that type of brush, our customers seem to appreciate super-soft on the face and with high density to deliver backbone. Brian

Hi! I came to know that the Chinese have been eating badgers for a long, long time and that the badger hair used for making shaving brushes, is a by-product. Is that true? If yes, then we can all go back to using them without feeling guilty, I guess. Do let me know. Thanks and regards, Dr. Basu ( India)

For me I just go for horse hair and bore brushes. I can‘t understand synthetic brushes. They‘re good of course. As well badger brushes are. But it‘s still plastic and I don‘t like rubbing old oil in my face. Please consider this as well. Yes you will use them longer than a waste bag. But in the end it‘s a product being produced and therefore around in the world. Even if you use this brush for like 10 years. For now it‘s there and produced in masses. We should reduce the consume in every aspects. Hell gosh, I‘m sounding like a damn hippie. Anyways, cheers to yall. Happy easter.

I understand your concern but for me personally, I would rather be using a synthetic than a badger when I've seen how they are treated. We recently took on a range of shaving brushes from a company called Vielong. They make sustainable, environmentally friendly, vegan friendly and Cruelty free shaving brushes. www.executive-shaving.co.uk/brands/vielong

Badger brushes are still being sold. There must be a way to buy badger hair from a company that does not hurt the animal. And the badgers only need to be shaved for the hair there is no need to kill them so you should probably not buy from China then...

Don´t worry about that, in Chinese people eat badger so that´s why a lot of brush business buys his knots even European company. Never a silvertip brush can compare with a sinthetic brush even 4th generation. To me plastic it´s more important to reduces that badger hair so the badger animal that as I said Chinese people eat it.

Well, even though I support the decision of not killing the badger for fur, you have to know that the asian counterpart might not have lied; remember reading long time ago that in some asian cuisine it is considered that the meat is tasting better if the animal is beaten heavily before death...and if this is the truth, you might just have increased the scale of this "farming" since in the absence of a bigger profit from fur, more meat would have to compensate for the loss...
