Why we think so much about our hair

We spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about, and in various ways ‘styling’ our hair. It’s not entirely silly; we’re trying to tell the world - through the language of keratin strands - about who we are.

FURTHER READING
“It could seem bizarre quite how long we spend on those strands of stringy keratin that sprout - unreliably - from our scalps. We will, over a lifetime, devote thousands of hours and even more money on hairdressers’ careful attempts to coax and sculpt our coiffure into exactly the right colour, shape and dimension. There are days when our entire mood will be supported by a sense that our hair is cooperating and others when our spirits will be just as powerfully ruined by an unfortunate glimpse of our disobedient locks in an elevator mirror...”

They've worked with many different animators, who it was can always be found in the description. Joe Bichard worked on the animation of this video. His website ( www.joebichard.com ) states "I like to work in Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash and After Effects.". So It's most likely one of those programs.

I also think that the reason we obsess over hair is because not only is it an expression of ourselves, it's also something that we can control in our own world and it's one of those things that you can instantly change about yourself without having to wait. For example losing weights, clearing up your skin, finding a new job or spouse. and also the changes make a difference to how you feel.

I started balding at age 14 and it's amazing how few people actually care. Sometimes is does make my dating life harder being nearly half bald at 24, but the people who do care I'm balding I notice are better off not in my life. It's kinda protects me from superficial people who aren't good friends.

Hello there Nguyen! You are absolutely right. He has a wonderful voice. I keep saying that he should start to sing! By the way, just in case you are new here, his name is Alain de Botton. He is one of the greatest thinkers of our time. Besides he is the best " teacher of life" one can imagine:-) His entire work has a life changing quality. You can read his books, listen to his TED talks and other talks, and watch his documentaries too. He has another youtube channel where you can find those documentaries. Just search for the one called " Status Anxiety", to find the channel. If you want to start with one book, I would highly recommend " The Consolations of Philosophy". If you search for his name on Itunes you can find interviews with him on several podcasts too. My favourite one is the " On Being with Krista Tippett" podcast, where he talks about his latest book " The Course of Love". That's the most meaningful and profound conversation I have ever heard about love. He also has a speech on love in youtube. To find it just search for: " On Love, Alain de Botton, Sydney Opera House". Many greetings and best wishes:-)

This video is cool. However, if you're a Black person, hair matters soooo much. Society notices and cares whether hair is in an afro or made straight, etc. History of black hair is complicated and brutal, and Black people with tightly curled hair still get discriminated based on how their hair grows naturally from their head. If a Black woman normally has their hair in a natural afro style, and then decides to get their hair straightened regardless of the resulting style, *everyone* in their circle and beyond will notice. This video does not provide the nuance that comes with how people can be treated differently in societies that take a lot of stock on conforming "abnormality" (I.e. Black "kinky" hair) into what is deemed proper and acceptable (I.e. straighter or loosely curled hair).

@Matthew Durr, both a sad, and happy point. Sad in that that's the point of the military: to discourage the show of vain, selfish expression at the cost of uniformity and efficiency. But happy in that this means we can learn a thing or two from them: in a way that, like an artist that's limited to just a drab paper and pencil, it allows the truly-genuine to express themselves in different ways that DON'T compromise the unit despite such limitations, such as in how they act to their subordinates/leaders, or in what they do and how they do it, or the jokes/culture/slang they use amongst themselves. Hell, even if you might have a haircut as true to your picture as possible, what's to stop you from shaving a few places here and there to make ornate shapes, such as whirlpools, or lightning bolts, or even a pokeball? The grass might be short to work with, but even the smallest of contrasts can create a world of difference.

@Benjamin Dover, ie, you're still trying to communicate to yourself that you're happy with how you look, and even if you might not be trying to, you're still conveying to others that that is the haircut you've chosen for yourself, and whether you accept it or not, they'll still judge you for it. Not to say you should really care, especially if you don't, but it helps to know.
@Matadurr
@Matadurr 7 лет назад
haha man you have no idea how uniform regs work. That haircut I've got in the photo is about as long as they'll let you have it. Not that I mind, I've always had short hair. Piece of advice for you if you ever join, don't even think about shaving in some sort of design into your hair.

This is why it is so painful to live with the awareness that you are losing your hair. For some it could be like losing an arm. Maybe you should do a video about that.

It's obvious this was written by a man...a woman DOES notice your hair. She notices when you've had it cut, if you have a new color, what style you're sporting. We women DO notice hair!

These comments do a good job at proving +Shareen Curry's point. Cornrows Bantu Knots etc are perfectly wearable hairstyles if your hair naturally grows or holds it. Kylie wouldn't even be trying it if it wasn't for the millions of black people who have them, and yet somehow she is the only one who looks good in them...Like...what? Do you know how many people walk this earth? And ou can only name Kylie. Tyra Banks is a model who has Cornrows. What about Alicia Keys, Beyonce, etc

Omegapede Prime that fact that you just said Kylie Jenners name, is the reason why you are part of the problem,couldn't say zendaya or beyonce? But Kylie Jenner? The one who desperately tries to alter her body to look like a light skinned black girl? Please shut the fuck up with that fuck shit,and headlines and magazines seem to be doing the opposite when they react to white and people and their "exotic braids" That shit makes headlines and it always says "Kylie started braids" "khloes cornrows are the new look" even see those white ass models with knots and braids in they their hair and not see one black model at the show, you're an ignorant little shit who has no idea what they are talking about, stop commenting Stop @ing me, you sound so dumb

Omegapede Prime we don't need your celebration, we do that ourselves. Stay in your white ass lane. We don't need your approval, what we need is for you to stop stealing poc culture and then try to justify it by somehow bringing up Kylie Jenner or some stupid shit

LOVED THIS ARTIST. but I'm very interested in the psychosocial implications of hair communicating as it's related to the race construct because inevitably people view the communication of ethnic hair as different than that of white hair.
@badasunicorn6870
@badasunicorn6870 7 лет назад
Elijah Ragland, first; I might be wrong, but I do think the White you're refering to also is an ethnisity, second the diffrance in apparance between ethnisities also includes hair, so I do think that is independant of the ethnisity directly, but rather an indirect conseqens of the actuall diffrance. I might be wrong ofcourse
