2011. A year when the Lavender Town creepypasta is brewing and getting ready to take over the internet. Coincidentally, also the year when several girls in Le Roy New York began to experience a bizarre illness that seemed to come out of nowhere.... And as fate would have it, both incidents share a disturbing thread when you look at the psychology behind what was happening. Today on Psych of Play, we’re talking Nocebo, Mass Psychogenic Illness, and Illusory Truth. Strap in, this one is a bit spoopy.

I wouldn't say it goes through that route, I'd guess it's that we ultimately have a strong tendency to 'biasedly' look for justifications on reality for our preconceptions of reality. What would strengthen our beliefs, making us act accordingly. Even to the point of subconsciously developing harmful symptoms. I'd say anxiety and panic attacks could have something to do with this, we're scared, so we may find (in other words fabricate) reasons on reality for our fear and panic, worsening the situation.

@SylumSolosEverything
@SylumSolosEverything 3 года назад
there was a sound. it was extremely soft and subtle, but it carried a frequency relevant to the pseudo-tones he mentioned... i honestly wasnt expecting anything to affect me but 8:24 I had to stop the video there because i felt this sensation in my brain that was similar to hearing nails on a chalkboard... but still, i could barely hear anything until i started paying close attention to the audio in my headphones... (i transcribe music by ear as a hobby, so im sharp at catching minor details in sound.) it was a very quiet, yet sharp methodic beeping which was the singular set of tones in the intro to the lavender town theme put on repeat. with the right sound editing software, its possible to suppress the easily comprehensible frequencies (the tones we hear in music) while amplifying the "other ones" that the human brain cant comprehend and often misses because it is mainly only focused on the frequencies which it can comprehend. one reason why some people here had a reaction to something they could barely catch is because the editor isolated that tone from the base track and because that is a frequency which our brains have trouble to comprehend or "math out", it causes/can cause intense discomfort and dissonance both physically and emotionally. (this also explains why some people cant tolerate the sound of heavy metal, dubstep, or classical music. we're all different.) with a bit of googling you can learn how sound affects human neurology on multiple levels, such as binaural beats. though its a bit scary, the thought of someone with enough knowledge in neurology and skill in sound editing would be able to create a weapon with nothing but a sine wave or two...now imagine being able to sharpen that frequency even further. on another note, the reaction to the sound *was* also probably amplified due to what he was saying prior, which basically prepared our brains to feel incoming discomfort. the frequency triggered it, but the suggestion could have amplified the feeling due to the brain being notified to pay closer attention to itself. (Edit: corrected some vocabulary and added some extra info)

Didn't get the nocebo, but I was thinking "This video is about mass hysteria" from the set up. I did still feel a little on edge, so it "affected" me in that way, but I didn't think "this is pain". For more fun historical examples of mass hysteria, I encourage people to look up the actual, really happened "Dancing Plague", in which people danced to death uncontrollably in the 1500s, probably due to life stress including multiple crop failures in the region over several years.

another less exterme example comes from the book "Eleven Blue Men" where a school girl named 'Sandy'(pseudonym) feels light headed and vomits in choir practise. after she goes to the nurse more and more students get sick, then some teachers and other assistants. I'll be honest, I never had any of the "symptoms" of the lavender town syndrome, but I loved (and still love) the idea behind it. Its just something about there being such an eerie idea from a children's video game that gets me. Something on the outside seeming so innocent, but hiding a dark secret.

I remember you trying to strangIe me. I still have bruises on my neck. I remember watching the gray Sky over me wondering when It would end. I remember feeling my ribs breaking like glass. I remember you cutting off my ring finger with those rusty big blades. I remember you showing me my wedding ring. I remember you shooting me in my stomach. Those “Pseudo-Tones” you played made me wonder how much the subconscious plays a part in these effects. I expected the tones to at least be uncomfortable to listen to or hurt my ears like you had stated, but that didn’t happen. In fact, it felt more like my chest was tensing up and then releasing the tension with a wave of heat and tingling. Even if I believed that my ears would hurt, I never thought that I would feel anything like that. It wasn’t even painful. It was just weird. I do wonder if high pitch tones can still have an affect on the body even if pseudo tones don’t actually exist, given that a high pitch tone was indeed playing in the background. If I didn’t have sensory issues I would honestly study this myself

Thanks for talking about this ‼ I was diagnosed with conversion disorder and PNES (psychogenic non epileptic seizures) . My neurologists say that they stem from extreme stress due to my chronic ptsd causing flashbacks and night terrors , panic disorder causing panic attacks and being on the autistic spectrum causing high sensitivity to stimuli etc. ● After years of suffering from seemingly random partial and grand mal seizures I got answers. The symptoms were so debilitating , they made it impossible for me to; attend school, work, and made me even more fearful than I was already to leave my house. in general. The only way the doctors could give a solid diagnosis , was after I completed a 48-84 hour seizure and sleep study. ● If anyone is having seizure symptoms I'd highly recommend that test, because many seizure conditions cannot be read by a simple EEG machine, unlike epileptic seizures, and they are not allowed to diagnose anything non epileptic without that specific type of testing. The study was certainly not super comfortable since they induce seizures by any means necessary, but I'm so glad I did it because the info has proven to be valuable to me finding any kind of relief . Sorry this is so long, I ramble and this really is a huge part of my life and wanted to share any info I have about it to help others who may be interested or suffering. ❤

@tropezando
@tropezando 3 года назад
I've read that elevated adrenaline can cause non epileptic seizures. I also know that stimulant drugs can cause seizures as well, so it follows that with PTSD, a trigger that induces high stress hormones could have a role in causing seizures. Have you ever read a book called The Body Keeps the Score? It talks about how PTSD physically affects your body. I haven't read it personally (waiting on the library) but I've had it recommended to me by other people with PTSD.
@grodon909
@grodon909 3 года назад
Hey there! Delayed response, but for reference, you actually can have a diagnosis of nonepileptic spells or conversion disorder without significant testing. Currently, the clinical diagnosis of these conditions can actually be satisfied by the presence of positive symptoms (that is the presence of symptoms) that are non-pathologic. The idea that non-epileptic events and conversion require ruling out other conditions has been pushed out of favor in recent years. That said, often times we will get additional tests because our patients (and some doctors tbh) would feel more comfortable with the confirmation, which is reasonable. There's sort of an art to the diagnosis and importantly the discussion of these kinds of conditions.
@thebusinesswoman23
@thebusinesswoman23 3 года назад
@@tropezando That makes a lot of sense about the elevated adrenaline and stress hormones ! I have "hot flashes" that are not at all "flashes"😑💨 (they can last around 5-10 hours) and when I've done very general bloodwork, my hormone levels come back normal. Its awful and so frustrating because I'm talking *hot* like POURING constant drops of sweat from my head mainly . It's become pretty bad and hard to deal with especially when I have to go out. It started to get even worse after I had my second child. More of a reason why I think its all hormonal. 🤷‍♀️ Makes sense about stimulants too, that's why I can't even drink much coffee in a day without feeling super jumpy! 😆 When I got my seizure testing done, before the actual study began, I went thru a lot of other tests. One of which was a reflex test. When the nurse first struck my knee, she jumped back and said "wow you have very strong reflexes! I've never seen someone respond like you! " 🤭 I am admittedly very jumpy and so many noises and triggers make my heart feel like it gets jolted by ⚡lightning . I often say my body feels like there is an underlying electric current going thru it. In my history, Only sedating prescriptions like; benzodiazapines, muscle relaxers, and sedating pain medications have helped bring that feeling down. However, the side effects from most of those medications have been too much for me and I end up asking to be taken off them. Not sure what to do about it presently tbh. Oh and YES I HAVE heard of that book a while ago. I haven't read it yet, I had forgotten about it! Thank u for reminding me! ☺👍
@thebusinesswoman23
@thebusinesswoman23 3 года назад
@@grodon909 oh wow, thank you for the response! I realize, I had the conversion disorder diagnosis beforehand but got the PNES diagnosis afterwards. As someone who gets nose bleeds easily, I always got fooled by this song. I thought that other peoples noses started bleeding hearing the song but not many people do. The doctors told me that frequencies can also cause my nose to bleed, its weird and I believe thats a reason that the rumor started. Possibly someone who's nose started bleeding because that was a common one. So?? Idk if I made sense but yeah pretty crazy

This made me think that people that claim to have difficulty breathing when wearing facemasks might have those symptoms for similar reasons.
@corruptedteka

Oh. That's an interesting point. I would've never thought of it. I myself have no problem breathing with a face mask, but it does get uncomfortably hot in there.
@xyannail4678
@xyannail4678 3 года назад
Yes, it's psychological. I thought at first too, but I realized I would have to cope with it anyways so then poof gone where what I thought were consequences of wearing a face mask. The worst is that you tell other people this that they are not breathing correctly (they are usually hyperventilating, or breathing too much with their mouths) and that's why they think they have symptons. When they don't. If you breathe through your nose correctly and you stop believing that then you won't have anything.
@omatofi
@omatofi 3 года назад
i remember walking about the local grocery store just fine with a mask on for upwards of like 10 minutes, but the second i start thinking about breathing it becomes hard and my nose gets itchy, etc etc. it's pretty ridiculous that you can do something just fine but as soon as you realize you're doing it, you're now breathing and swallowing manually.

Algorithmic punch! (Very late, but I really appreciate the way you presented everything. In terms of lavender town, I was overall more familiar with the Pokemon black/haunted cartridge creepypasta, and might have been out of Pokemon for too long to have really picked up on the pallet town tone syndrome. Also surprised you did not mention the fact that Pokemon episode with Porygon had a several week nocebo effect, or so I have read, of children claiming having seizures days and weeks after the episode aired, thought to be in relation to the media coverage and general concern. Final thought is that the nocebo effect you demonstrated was ruined for me by I think CPgrey having made a similar demonstration at some point, but it is a powerful example, and well used herein.)

I can report having experienced something similar in 2020 regarding stress manifesting as oddly specific symptoms. In November, I had a court case coming up (a lawsuit over a *very minor* car accident that was being handled by my insurance company. I hadn't heard from my lawyer in months, contacted them only to find my case had been transferred to a different law firm due to high case loads at the first one...all in all, despite the fact that it was a frivolous lawsuit for which I had insurance that would cover any conceivable payment I would have to make, it was stressing me the hell out. I was also waiting on a CT scan that I was going to get the week after the court case to check on a thing that had a very slight possibility of being cancer (it wasn't, but my mind was building up the logic of "they wouldn't check if they didn't think it wasn't serious enough to be worth checking" into "oh god I definitely have cancer"). Add that to already high background stress levels from the ongoing pandemic, and....yeah. I have asthma, so one of the things I've been doing during the pandemic is taking my temperature every few days. It can be hard to tell the difference between my asthma being touchy and a dry cough from a cold - at least until it intensifies or other symptoms start showing up - whereas you can't fake a fever. Except, apparently, when you're super stressed out, because my temperature that Friday night when things were getting really bad stress-wise was 38.5 (101.3 for you Americans). Not critically life threatening, but definitely a fever. Next day, I had pretty severe coughing fits - more than can be attributed to my asthma when I'm on my meds and not exposing myself to chemicals while exercising or otherwise similarly antagonizing that condition. By Monday, I was feeling most of the symptoms on the list for Covid. So I called in, got myself a test booked, and take the test on Tuesday. On Wednesday, I get a message saying it came back negative, and I also get a message from my new lawyers saying "we've reached a settlement and this matter is closed." Stress relieved (at least partially) and all those symptoms vanish pretty much instantly. I've never been gotten by the hypersound example for nocebo effect, but I attribute that more to my being educated enough in how human hearing works that when I was first exposed to it (through CGPGrey's video), it tripped my BS-meter and made me instantly suspicious that Grey was trying something. I'd seen enough of his videos by then to know that he can be cagey like that. But yeah, the "fake" symptoms thing is definitely a real stress response.

In my mind, it’ll always just come down to the fact that Lavender Town was a relatively eerie chiptune track in one of the most well known games of all time. The dissonance between notes on top of the fact it’s arranged on the Gameboy, which uses unnatural and basic synthesized sounds that are, for many, uncomfortable to listen to, just makes it easier to use as a basis for these kinds of rumors. I for one love 8-bit music and rarely have trouble listening to it as I am simply built different, but there are enough who don’t like it that will help boost the popularity of the rumors because they have weak ears and bad opinions fr fr (Joking of course). I’m always more interested to look at the music theory behind these things more than just the other psychological implications, though. You covered that side of things greatly. Awesome video, glad I recently discovered your stuff.
