Disney films have been crashing at the box office with regular frequency lately. But many thought WISH would be different. Not woke. Not political. New story. New music. But it tanked worse than any of them. Why? I have an idea why Wish failed and why Disney may be in panic mode.

Hot Take: the reason the parks segment is still performing well despite all this is more due to the imagineering of old rather than any of their new rides/expansions. Nostalgia is a powerful drug and the parks, even if not marketed as such nearly as much today, is still a very nostalgic experience despite many of the changes over the years decreasing their quality.

The Disney company has forgotten their core values founded upon Walt Disney's philosophy of family entertainment. They have sacrificed quality for ideology and politics. Parents cannot trust the Disney brand anymore. I believe this started with Bob Iger and his presidential aspirations. He sacrificed the company on the altar of pandering. It was Iger who got rid of the great creatives that are now working at other companies like Illumination. It was Iger that green lit all the recent failures. It is Iger that will be the death of the Disney company.

Another thing that’s worth mentioning is that Disney has some insane budgeting issues with their films. Wish had a $200 million budget. For comparison the Super Mario Movie had a $100 million budget and that movie included every expensively priced celebrity you can imagine and licensing for the most popular 80s songs ever. Like what in the hell is Disney spending their money on with these movies?? If they cut budgets with their animated films I’m sure they’ll see an easier path to success.

Almost every one of the Disney movies released this year has had reshoots, or things reworked well in to production. When that happens, it screams of an executive watching it in some state, and then demanding changes. Normally these changes dumb the movie down - as execs think we’re dumb (because they are) - so add in over explanation, gags, action scenes, etc. that have no place being in the movie. Rarely it works (and never because of their inclusion, more in spite of their inclusion), but as these execs get paid more and more, get more and more arrogant, they believe their own hype and it is costing studios so much. Reshoots, rushed expensive cgi and unrealistic release dates meaning a rushed production as well as pre- and post- production lead to budget bloat. Fundamentally, if executives leave a production alone costs go down.

YES!....I have been saying this exact thing for the past 3 years. It's VERY simple. People don't trust the Disney "logo" any more. It's not ANY specific movie problem in particular. No,...It's the very LOGO itself! Disney has burned off the DELICATE halo that decades of amazing men and woman worked soooo hard to build! The TRUST that the logo once enjoyed is now gone. DISNEY WAS WARNED THAT THIS WOULD HAPPEN FOR YEARS....and they laughed at us. Now look,......

@CLIFFLIX
@CLIFFLIX 7 месяцев назад
@@the_traveling_texan - The Parks are floating the entire company. Their revenue is being sucked away to keep the company going. Disney left a horrible construction crater in the center of Epcot for 5 years. Why? So they could build a water pump walk through attraction and music stage and a statue with park benches? They couldn't afford to do that in 12-18 months. Instead they left it there for 5 LONG friggin' years!! They didn't spend the money to maintain the hydraulic seals on "Murphy". It blew oil all over and caught fire because they didnt want to spend the money to maintain it. How long did Murphy blink with ONE eye only?...because they didn't have the money to fix the bad one? I could list 100's of things in the parks that Disney couldn't spend the money on. Why?...because that money was needed to prop up the rest of the company!!! The studios have lost 1 Billion + in the past 18 months alone. Disney + is losing 100's of millions...PER QUARTER...EVERY QUARTER since the day it was born! Yep,...the parks pay for it all! You might be OK with that but I'm not. 60 Billion investment in 10 years? Break it down,..that includes all global parks and cruise ships and hotels and DVC. and Disney has at least TWO brand new cruise ships that will eat chunks of that. And!,...that's "basically" the NORMAL budget and NOT extraordinary for Disney. No,...this company is not healthy and it's VERY poorly managed! Sorry....

I think another factor is the economy right now. Movie theater tickets are getting more expensive, there aren't many discount theaters left, and families/individuals are being more picky about which movies they go see. And then add to that the lack of trust with Disney, and other big Hollywood companies, and you see a decline in profits across the board.

100% on point. And I would add that what’s happening in Orlando with ridiculous pricing and dismal turnout is associated to the same thing. It’s across the board. There's no one at Disney who's invested in Disney. Even at his worst, Eisner loved Disney, he absolutely exemplified Walt Disney. Iger never has. Iger has slways been about Iger. This is the Bob Iger Company, not the Walt Disney Company. Look at the entire Board of Directors. Two new Board members, not a single Board member who has anything to do with creativity or entertainment, they are all Iger alcolytes. Iger has lost the trust. The people who don't go to see anything new from Disney are still playing Snow White, Bambi, Peter Pan, 101 Dalmations, and so on for their kids. It's not that people actually dislike Disney, its that they dislike what Iger has made of the Company.

In general, the company has moved further and further away from Walt's ideals and all the things he spoke about. They stopped listening to the original creator. The problem is Bob Iger isn’t an artist like Walt Disney was. He’s a businessman who’s only focused on making money and relying on what worked in the past and people still hold in very high regard, like Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and other popular characters and movies. Legit the ONLY non princess characters I’ve seen get a decent amount of merchandise or their own franchise (not counting Frozen) is Peter Pan, Hercules, 101 Dalmatians and especially Lilo and Stitch, despite it heavily focuses on Stitch. Movies like Chicken Little and Home on the Range flat out don’t get ANY merch aside stuff like collectable items like pins, while movies growing in popularity like Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules do actually get more stuff and attention. There’s a reason why the Disney Princess franchise keeps making new princess movies to add characters to their lineup, despite some characters don’t really have fans or even their movie is forgettable

I agree with you. The movies have definitely lowered in quality. I think they were able to get away with it for a little while because Disney had such loyal consumers, but watchers slowly dwindled. And now, for me it’s sad I feel as though I have to monitor movies that are supposed to be for my son in characters he loves. so the last little bit that Disney had of its valued guests just completely sent them over board because I don’t believe they are creating treasured films they once did, in my opinion. I will always continue to watch classics and I love Disney and will attend the parks, but I am so disappointed where the product has come.

I thought it was just me, but I've been seeing a lot more messages from others who think similar: I'm burned out over the constant remakes, sequels, and prequels. They don't seem to be utilizing their full potential of using imagination and creativity as they claim to encourage. What I really would like is the continuation of telling children's (and other relatable) stories. There are so many other stories out there, including fairy tales, that they haven't touched. Han Christian Andersen wasn't the only Scandivavian author. I grew up reading a book Swedish fairy tales, and some of those could be great candidates. My particular favorite is called, "The Changeling," but there are others that would allow for a lot of imaginative storytelling. For diverse stories, I wouldn't mind at all being told children's stories from around the world. That might take some research and work, but it would be interesting to me to hear a version of stories others from another part of the world (of course, they'd have to be "Disneyized" for those stories that are a little darker). I'd be all for that.

Let's be honest. Thanks to streaming and riding theater prices, people don't got to movies unless *they really want to see the movie* which means it can't just be good. It has to be Great. And Disney rarely makes the leap to be Great. Disney consistently makes movies that range from "fine" to "great". And people still show to Great. But we can't afford (in multiple ways) to just go to the theater for "fine" anymore.

Honesty, I think it’s because of the horrible writing. I think Disney is cutting the writing process so scripts and characters aren’t well developed. I saw The Marvels over the weekend, and I was excited about it. But it wasn’t good. It felt disjointed like it was two different movies, the trio of heroes character development unbalanced, and it used dialogue to explain major plot points instead of allowing the story to explain plot points. It’s also clear there’s no communication between projects as The Marvels blew two huge plot holes in the Secret Invasion storyline. So now I don’t know what is canon and what isn’t. I also think Disney is cutting corners and not doing storylines justice. Captain marvel should have had a second movie to explain where she’s been, Monica should have had her own tv series (or her character could have been developed in that second Captain Marvel movie) both would have added to the development of The Marvels. It would have also allowed the audience to know the characters more and root for them. [SPOILER] But at the end of the marvels I didn’t really care that Monica was left in another dimension, I didn’t know her so I’m not invested in her story.

Writing. People are not sick of superheroes, they're sick of lackluster writing. People are not sick of venerable franchises, they're sick of incoherent writing. People are not sick of live-action remakes, they're sick of unimaginative writing. People are not sick of wokeness, they're sick of insincere writing. Great writing will make people show up even if you're making a movie about a middle-aged Asian woman being audited. You get the writing you pay for, and if you're going to pay for good writing you need to trust the writers to do their jobs. It seems to me like Disney no longer does either, and as a result the Disney brand now stands for stories that are lackluster, incoherent, unimaginative and insincere.

NAILED it with these conclusions!! The way I have been putting it is, there is too much brand damage that has been done (i.e. trust lost) over the last several years. Even if they right the ship today, it will take several years to overcome that brand damage/regain trust. Fortunately I think the park's brand damage hasn't been as bad as the studio. Parks have had damage (reservations, Genie+, nickle and diming everything, Magical Express), but they are still turning out good product (Tiana's Place, Treehouse, Cosmic Rewind, etc.). The EPCOT "hub" overhaul is a fail and Disney better hope Bayou Adventure is great because if its even just ok, it could set the parks down that steep decline as well.

As people like me who have fond memories of Disney at their best get older and older, younger generations will have less and less attachment to Disney over time because the company did nothing to appeal to them the way they appealed to me and older generations. Right now it really feels like Disney is going in the same direction as Sears, a once powerful company that dominated American culture only to find itself struggling to adapt to a world that isn't their oyster anymore. @ItzAdrian02
@ItzAdrian02 7 месяцев назад
A VERY THOROUGH EXPLANATION: Disney issues: -Overspending -Bad Marketing -Stale Themes Pixar: Was burned by disney due to their films going to Disney+ and coming back to theaters with a mediocre film. Elemental dodged a bullet. So Inside Out 2 might be that saving grace. Marvel: Bad Disney+ shows, quantity over quality, and the over relient on reshoots and executives constantly changing their movies and scripts. Every show, almost every movie felt like homework or lead up to the next finale. Movies with already established characters, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Guardians succeeded due to their track record being on point. Other movies were suffered for the same reason. Only having Deadpool 3 being the only marvel movie & Echo being TV-MA & released at once, and the new Marvel Spotlight category might be what the MCU needs to bounce back. Lucasfilm: -Sequel Trilogy -Will announce something to then cancel it.

John Bull, the person who coined the Trust Thermocline, actually wrote a Disney parks-related RU-vid comment on a video made by @PoseidonEntertainment about the loss in trust at Disney parks. Bull speculated that declining quality of the parks (leading to the Trust Thermocline) may be delayed by a generation because of the nature how parents introduce their children to the parks, but the grandchildren generation may skip it altogether if rising prices don't justify the entertainment value. Interesting stuff indeed.
@TCBinCartersville

I think maybe the loss of trust in the parks may have a delayed impact on the parks because of nostalgia - but I think it plays a direct and immediate role on the film side. Fans like myself take out their parks grievances on the movies. I used to see every Disney movie and marvel movie on opening night - even Thor - Love & Thunder and Antman 3. I have only seen HM and Indiana Jones in the theater this year and Elemental on D+. The others, I have no interest in seeing. I will probably never watch the Marvels because I can’t stand Brie Larson. I’d rather watch paint dry.

I think another reason for this could just be disney's artistic presentation. With 3D, unless you have a team who really care about what they're making, it will eventually devolve into the cooperate style disney has come to be associated with, and is present in most of their modern films. Even if technically wish had 2D backgrounds, or there were legit beautiful shots in recent movies, disney still has this style associated with them. It almost feels like their animators still see 3D as a tool, and not an art form, or more likely, disney is making their animators use it like a tool instead of an art form. idk it's like 12am and i'm rambling but I hope my points makes sense to someone.

@@maimoneattia I wonder if Disney was using AI to write the scripts for some of these films and if that's why the films have been so lackluster. As a film fan I HATE the idea that AI is used for any purpose in film/tv show. We have so many REAL LIFE people who are passionate about the projects they're assigned to and they need to be left alone so they can make a great quality product. He also hit the nail on the head when he said he had no idea what the movie "Wish" was about, Disney's marketing team recently has really dropped the ball big time.

I might like to add that I think post pandemic, consumer behavior has changed quite a bit and there is less of an appetite for people wanted to go sit in a movie theater. I wonder if movie theaters survive in the long run personally. People prefer direct to consumer, everything at their finger tips, fast and convenient. As home theater technology continues to get better and cheaper, I think the idea of having to plan your day around going to see a movie at physical location and sit with a bunch of strangers and pay for overpriced confession food will continue to decline. Kind of reminds me of blockbuster. But I could be wrong, just my opinion.

I didn't even know this was coming and only really know about it from movie reviews. I've honestly no idea what it's about or when and where it's set. Considering it's the big 100th tribute, it limped into the room with barely a sound. It's very sad to see what's happening. It was only a matter of time. You are very correct, but I think that is the 2nd reason. I think the 1st reason is the talent failure, there has been a brain drain by natural attrition and ESG moves, placing unqualified people into pottery are not ready for and running out out old school talent and removal of their old process that the new crew hates. Look back at the animation dark age and how they managed to turn it around leading to the renaissances, they were not woke back then but failed. They needed to hit rock bottom, cull the heard and infuse new outside talent. They are near bottom but I do not think they will cull the herd, or find a talented leader willing to work at DIS that can turn it around. Creative geniuses don’t grow on trees.

I remember watching Disney movies in awe of the incredible animation and visual storytelling. I literally couldn't believe people could draw such beautiful stuff. Now a days there is none of that. I don't think they would be able to replicate that, they just don't have the talent for it anymore for whatever reason. Also they NEED to fire all their writers because they have only been able to put out fan fiction level stories. This goes across lucasfilm, marvel, and disney studio...

I think this is brilliant. Completely agree. We haven’t seen The Marvels yet, just because life is busy. I want to catch it before it’s on Disney+. Beyond that, yeah. I have no idea what Wish is about, but I know I really haven’t enjoyed a Disney animated film since Encanto. And it looks like they recycled Isabella and one of the donkeys from Pinocchio as the main characters in Wish. On Disney+, I’m about 50/50 on Star Wars and Marvel content. Beyond that, I’ve mostly enjoyed the National Geographic content the most - which is a tragedy. I love the classic Disney library, which is what I watch most often. And we loved watching Oppenheimer in theaters on opening weekend. Great film; great marketing.

As someone who grew up watching Disney films and former stockholder this makes me very sad that their most recent films have been underperforming in the box office and the company as a whole isn't doing that well. What this company needs to do is get rid of Iger and bring in someone like an Eisner who can hopefully turn things around like Eisner did with the renaissance era of the late 80s and 90s after their struggles of the 70s and 80s. And as for Marvel most of their films haven't been that impressive (with the exception of Spider-Man No Way Home and their TV series' such as Loki) post infinity saga so all they really need is one successful film both commercially and critically that's not a sequel or live action remake on something that focuses on the story and characters instead of this DEI BS. I also read something interesting today that this will mark the first time (excluding the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021) since 2014 that Disney won't have a single film gross over a billion dollars at the box office. I'm hoping and praying this company can return to it's glory like we all once knew!

Not saying that Disney cannot do better as I feel they have focused more on quantity the past few years so it’s not a big deal to miss one or simply wait for it to release on streaming platforms. Overall, movie sales are down too so there is less incentive for studios to provide content other than for the purpose of staying current… kinda like social media posting where the thought is to just post often instead of posting meaningful content- not saying you do because I love your channel!!

The product is undoubtedly bad. But I think the general public are starting to see through the shamelessness of Disney's strategy. It looks like everything they've put out in the past eighteen months is a badly made money-grab BECAUSE IT IS. Haunted Mansion, Little Mermaid, Indiana Jones - they're all poor imitators of the originals, quickly made, without any love or passion, to turn a quick buck. And people see through that now. I still wonder if Wish will do what Encanto did and see a huge surge in interest once it arrives on Disney+. A lot of families out there can't afford to be paying for multiple streaming platforms and also spend $100 taking a family to see the movie in theaters.

As someone who went to film school, I think this was very hyperbolic. Any studio can (and many have) put out a string of underperformers and then later come out with an absolute smash hit. Disney just needs to change some of its decision makers and give more power back to its artists and writers. I saw marketing for wish MONTHS ago - when I went to see Barbie in theaters, there were. big cutouts for it, and I've seen plenty of ads and previews on social media. For me, the reason I haven't been going to see Disney's latest movies in theaters is because of money. If i want to go to the parks (which I do as a priority), then I'm not spending $15 on a movie ticket because the parks are gonna suck that and then some out of my wallet the second I walk through the gates lol. Also, I wouldn't listen to a single word Elon Musk says. That man is a known liar and con artist.
