The downfall of Disney is nothing new, people have been talking about this for several years (from what I've seen on RU-vid). The company just doesn't take risks anymore, which is half of what made their company successful in the first place. They were innovators, willing to try new things and make people impressed with a format of storytelling they've never seen before. If they were still doing that, Wish or whichever movie would be pushing boundaries for kids' movies: what animation style can be used, what's too scary, what's too complex, all things explored in the Puss in Boots sequel, for example. Instead, they're recycling their more recent content since it worked out well for them, giving us half-reheated leftovers, and expecting people to eat it up. And the worst part is, because they're so huge, people will eat it up. Wish will be an example of this.

I'm actually stoked that Disney is in another flop era, because whenever they're in a flop era, the movies that follow after said flop era tend to be really, REALLY good. Case and point, when Disney released The Black Cauldron back in the 80s and almost went bankrupt because of it, they released The Little Mermaid, which was followed by beauty and the Beast, which was followed by Aladdin, which was followed by The Lion King. And again, in the 2000s, Disney was struggling in the animation department, but then they released Tangled, which was followed by Wreck it Ralph, which was followed by Frozen, which was followed by Big hero 6, Zootopia and Moana. Also, animation historians have a clear and concise line for when the revival era ended (2010-2021)

Personally I think Disney started its flop era with Frozen 2. It was extremely rushed (they even said it in the documentary) and was clearly made to remake that "we're not like other Disney films" Frozen was. It tried WAY too hard to be different while trying to pander at the same time. Movies don't have to be revolutionary, they have to be FUN. Yes, it's amazing when they can reach us as adults. But that comes with passion. SHOW me WHY this is a classic Disney. Don't recycle. Reinvent. Let the story be itself, make characters because they're interesting and need their story told. Not to be a marketable plushie. In this essay I will...

I think Barbieheimer is a very good example of original concepts that was a big enough reason for people to go to the cinema. Disney need to begin branching out into more original and interesting concepts like these films. I also think marketing is a big issue, being able to make it a relevant internet discussion is also important. Once again Barbieheimer is a good example of this with people dressing up in pink to go see Barbie. This can even be seen with the second minion movie with the gentleminions. Theres so many new factors and ideas that there just not considering.
@savannahinparis
@savannahinparis 6 месяцев назад
Neither of those movies are original. Oppenheimer is based off the historical account of making the first nuclear bomb. It’s literally a biopic and Barbie is based of a children’s toy that Mattel created in the 1950s that has had dozens of films and tv adaptations since its release

@ivylangdon93

@@savannahinparis I know that there not wholly original ideas and are based on things but its more the fact that it was seen as exciting and new. The Barbie movie was such a big hit because it was seen as exciting and it was actually a good movie, people no longer want to see franchises or formulaic films in my perspective as the majority of tropes have been worn out as the movie business becomes more crowded. However the point still stands tat they are wildly more successful because they were less formulaic and broke the mold slightly even if they are not wholly original. Aswell as this if you think about the majority of films they will always be based on a concept or an idea, Barbie and oppenheimer were just more literal concepts but that does not stop them necessarily from being original, For example Toy Story is based on the concept of what would happen if Toys were alive. Gladiator is based upon the concept of the ancient greek gladiators. In my opinion it is all relevant. Thoughts?

I feel like a part of this is Disney burnout. They own *a lot* of brands and IPs, *a lot* of the movies being released in theaters, and a large chunk of the entertainment industry. Not only that, but they release 50+ movies and tv shows for some of their biggest brands (Star Wars and Marvel). That's way too much content for a single person to consume all at once, and it's not really even worth it if the content itself is mediocre and it was made with writers and actors who can barely afford health care.

You hit the crux of it. The simple fact is Disney has become risk-adverse. Instead of backing up every risky project with a safe project, they've decided to just play it safe with everything they put out. So, remakes, sequels, and formulas. For some reason, executives and bean counters don't associate projects doing well with financial success. I dunno, maybe they buy into their own profit-loss bullshit accounting that they use to screw people out of money. If they were truly smart and savvy, they'd notice which of their films did well commercially and critically--the ones that deviated from the norm of whatever franchise or genre they were in, typically--and push to do more along THOSE lines. Or, maybe Disney has just been so high on the hog for so long that they've forgotten what it felt like to have genuine competition. Maybe if Warners could get their shit straight they'd put Disney back in the fight and off cruise control. Basically, Hollywood is a mess right now and could benefit with less suits and more business-savvy creative people in top positions .

I had the same opinions about Wish when I first saw trailers, but the style honestly wouldn't be that bad for literally any other animation company. Absolutely while I have no interest in seeing WISH I echo this sentiment for Chicken Little as they’d gotten way too much credit for Toy Story’s existence (which I understand was for contractual reasons at the time) but nonetheless they practically invented something as trivial as a sticky note flip book animation not to mention Snow White came out during the Great Depression so they had no reason for Chicken Little to look the way it did especially not at the turn of the century

Personally, I’ve been really enjoying recent Pixar movies (particularly Luca & Elemental)!! But I’ve always had a soft spot for Pixar, and I really admire how they tell stories. Every movie of theirs seems to be unique from one another, even if the art style is similar. Disney animation on the other hand, seems to be producing very similar stories?? Or at least the characters seem the same, and especially the humour. The same artstyle is more boring than it is with Pixar as they don’t seem to be trying to change up much. Maybe I have a little too much to say on this topic, but I’m also just reallyyy excited for Pixar’s next movie, Elio :) *not sure how I feel abt Inside Out 2 yet tho

They do an amazing job at showing you an honest depiction of the best and worse of how people behave without sounding preachy or propagandistic. But I still felt very tired there but that’s because it was day 3 of straight up parks and 2 weeks of vacation before that.. expo was another one I went to and it was super fun with rides but it was very tiring to walk around all the time to get to places. The only thing keeping the trip from being the worst was that we had night passes and fast lanes that let us skip the lines and be there after hours so there were less people. But they were so expensive too and we ate there 3 times as well it was WAY to expensive and I think they should cut down on over pricing there stuff. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to get a hotel there as well. Just way to much. Still really fun and there rides and social events were good but they need to make things cheaper and find a way to make lines a lot less longer because I’m sure people have died there due to heatstroke, walking to much, dehydration, and heart attacks…

I honestly think it’s a better experience to go to one of the international Disney parks. The tickets are much more affordable and their domestic tourists really don’t care as much about the parks so it’s not very crowded. Ofc there’s a plane ticket involved with going overseas so I guess it breaks even in the end. maybe take advantage of college study abroad trips to go overseas with financial aid and then stop by the nearest theme park.

1. No Way Home is co-produced with Sony. And Barbie and Super Mario show that billion dollar movies are definitely possible, just not by Disney. 2. Disney has not yet broken even with their Star Wars purchase. Remember that half of the box office goes to the theaters and the other half to Disney. So they have made $3 billion theatrically. But they cost a billion to produce. And they spent over a billion on Galaxy’s Edge and Galactic Starcruiser. Just ask yourself, if they were making higher profits on Star Wars in the theater, why are they in a 5 year pause?

I'm glad you brought that up because whenever a movie bombs at the box office, they will have the knee-jerk response: "BUT...BUT...IT MADE 600 MILLION DOLLARS!" I agree with every point you brought up! I wish that Disney took more risks with their films and tapped into the creativity they have on staff more. So often do you look at the concept art and early sketches and see a movie that is often times a lot more interesting conceptually(ie Frozen, Wish ect). It gets run through corporate, scrubbing it clean of any of that. I know Disney movies are family movies(mainly aimed at kids) but with their recent films I just feel that they are talking down and hand holding too much with them. Kids can absolutely handle more serious topics(ex: avatar the last airbender, spiderverse, puss in boots the last wish) if you dont spell it out so obvious to them. I think people are just fed up with 1) lack of good fleshed out villians 2) lack of risks taken. For WISH it wouldve been amazing if they made it in 2D to pay homage to their earlier films and the craft that made this company thrive as long as it has. But oh well I guess🤷🏻. Not saying its a terrible movie but it feels like I'll forget this movie even came out within a year.

i have the DVD of home on the range LMAO,, it's a silly movie, i cringe, but there's a lot of wild animations (ie more explosions than one would think would be in a movie where the protagonists are cows) so it's a good time when i watch it at least lol

Disney has barely had any Box Office hits this year as they had many back to back Box Office bombs!

as someone with a disneyland pass who goes the parks pretty often, i really felt this bc the cast members have gotten so much more irritable. i don’t blame them, the pay isn’t great and the treatment of employees probably isn’t either… but why would u voluntarly work at disney if u have it and u could get a job u enjoy with better pay. like i’ve had multiple cast members get pissed at me for very rational and reasonable situations. ESPECIALLY ON RISE OF RESISTANCE, istg every person on the ride is so angry, like it’s not a character anymore they’re all just genuinely wishing death upon u.

Encanto was such an awful and annoying movie. Shocked Lucca wasn't chosen as one of the 2 only liked movies

I completely agree! Luca was so well done and the story was so good, meanwhile, in Encanto the plot development felt suuuuper rushed, especially the “growth” in family member relationships, and the message felt obvious and forced.

Disney World has gotten even worse than Disneyland. Last time I went they said they were only doing housekeeping every other day, but they never cleaned our room once in a 5 day stay. They did, however, have cast members barge into your room to “inspect” it every morning, sometimes as early as 7 am. So one morning while my husband was taking out our trash because no one ever cleaned the room, a male cast member let himself into our room while I was in the shower! It was terrifying! We never got so much as an apology for this terrible service and even though I grew up a hard core Disney lover, I can not convince my husband to ever visit the parks or stay in the resorts again. I’m just glad that we didn’t have young children that these cast members were waking up by banging on our door every morning from 7-8 am every day.

In the argument for the Disney live action retellings, I think Disney needs to do better to sell the “reimagining” part, because that’s what they started off as. I would say the best example of these are the movies that added and broadened the movie in a way that wasn’t necessary but it did improve it in a way! For example, the story arc they gave Eric in the live action little mermaid, he already was a fan favorite, but his backstory, and what they showed about him with his parents did a good job to connect with him more. I feel like Disney just needs to do a little bit better in selling the aspect of them being reimaginings, because that’s what the OG animated movies were; reimaginings of classic fairytales!
