Luke's parents must be both relieved and pleased that Mapperton will continue to advance into the future with you two using the technology, research and science of today to save the historic builds of Mapperton while working to restore the land to a more natural state. My grandmother, Nora, was an Irish immigrant in America, who worked as a household maid in Chicago. The lady she worked for was very good friends with Kate Buckingham. She met her a few times. We knew the story about Buckingham fountain, and found it very interesting. I still live in the Chicago suburbs and see the fountain once in awhile. Julie, what a wonderful story and connection! I can't wait to hear more.

I can't help to remember the comedic teams like Stiller & Meara, George & Gracie or Ozzie & Harriet when watching you both in lovely banter. It is quite refreshing along with lots of giggles. Luke is definitely the example of witty/dry British humour and Julie the more serious but sweet responses. I also loved the music you chose for removing the garland which was perfect for the ending of the un-decorating party. Bravo!

Hope you're feeling better Julie ~ you look amazing! Loving the beaver reintroduction project in Mapperton's stunningly beautiful woodland (I wonder why they disappeared from the UK countryside in the first place?). It's as if Alberta's diaries/papers/photos were biding their time...waiting to be discovered, curated and researched. It's heart-warming what you are doing, and that something of Alberta's legacy will survive, to feature in your dissertation.

@Joanna (London) I was wondering about why the beavers can't be in the wild in the UK, and then it dawned on me that most likely that rule was installed as a way to protect trees. Beavers are adorable creatures, and sooo hardworking, but golly, can they ever destroy a woods! They are so industrious that they cut down huge swaths of woods. My dad is an Erosion Control Scientist, and beavers were an area of study because their removal of trees can cause riverbanks to erode to the point that the entire river path changes. It's a delicate balance like always, though, because without beavers to thin them out, too many trees can choke each other out for sunlight. Anyway, I wondered if that's the reason they disappeared: too many frustrated farmers eliminated them for destroying the woods and changing the water paths? Another thought was that when the Beaver Hat Craze swept the UK and the continent, maybe that's what did them in. I know that at some point the UK had to turn to the US Colonies to fuel the Beaver Hat Rage, and nearly caused the US and Canada's beavers to be endangered, so I assume that happened because the UK had gone through all their beavers-? Just theories, but now, like you, I'm rather invested in the answer! I hope the Maperton Beavers are in a controlled environment so they don't completely destroy the woods, but I'm positive all the advising experts have thought through all angles. And I have to admit I'm really looking forward to seeing the busy little (well, often quite large) guys around Maperton! 🦫❤️

Everyone in family, * Except for the Earl and his wife, of course, they are the senior members of family* takes place in the un-decorating party and then you can get it done quicker "Many hands make light work" . Refreshments would be served when all is finished! Viscount Luke, you are right about the Beavers and how they can work to build up your steam of water! My grandparents owned a whole road in the country of a small village in America, with the whole family living on it, in our own homes, and they had two large bodies of water and one was just a creek, but when the beavers did their work the water was very, very high! As children * My five female cousins and I but, my brother was a bit young for many years and could not join us* But we would often play in the water. But it was not over our heads. It would be lovely to have the bodies of water built up. So interesting to learn the 'history of the family'! Thank you so much for taking the time to share all of this! Love it when you have time to add this to the vlogs.

Very sorry to hear you had Covid over the holidays Julie - but hopefully you are fully on the mend now. I work in museum/private collections care and research and I find your exploration of the Mapperton archives absolutely fascinating! I cannot wait to hear more about your dissertation and what sort of questions you want to consider answering. I feel like one of the most unknown things in America in 2022, is that of how important it was (or the overall impact) that American heiresses used their inheritance to save so many British stately homes. Even to the point that introductions were made between eligible bachelors and bachelorettes in the hopes that her money could help the family estate in England! Wishing you so much luck and energy for your dissertation! 👏🏻👏🏻

I am typing this almost blind without my eye glasses. You have a magnolia tree. You should start saving ita leaves and paint them gold for added color. Attach them to florist sticks with wire and you can use them to fill in empty wreathg and garland arrangements.

Hi Julie, I wanted to share your pain. My hubs doesn’t help decorate or take down the decorations after the holidays. He has fond memories of decorating with his mom as a child but doesn’t help at home. Haha. I’m sure we are not alone. I do have him bring everything to the basement to put away though. Your stairwell was beautiful.

It’s always a little sad when Christmas is over , I just love the holiday season . This year we had half the family sick with Covid , it all happened at the gingerbread house party . All the Moms & several toddlers were also sick so sadly we were all separate but we will be together next year .🙏🏼

Interesting Julie was correct. The practice of preserving fruit with sugar or honey is age-old, though one story of the toffee apple's creation claims it was born by accident. In 1908-09 a veteran candy-maker William W Kolb was experimenting with a Christmas-themed red cinnamon potion into which he dropped an apple. From there people used toffee or caramel to dip apples especially around Halloween.

I got chilled when you mentioned in the letter / the clipping from 1927 and realize what a rich history your house has. An American lady of the house and her American cousin. The exchange about the fountain, a landmark in America and there you are, am American lady 95 years on leaving you own mark on Mapperton. Chills. We are living history.

You have such lovely woods over there; I’d give anything to have a wander round. In Florida where I’ve lived my entire life, they’re full of vines, scrubby palms, and tree spiders galore. You can’t go for a nice walk because you’re impeded by all of that. So your woods look like heaven to me. 😍

I did not make the connection until now when you mentioned Buckingham Fountain, but it sounds like Alberta was related to Rosalie Buckingham who married Harry Selfridge (founder of Selfridges Dept. Store in London on Oxford St.) I wonder if they ever met or corresponded.

I highly suggest you get a computer program like Family Tree Maker to record all the genealogy you find. You can do it online, but then those websites own your research. Collateral lines are important (like Alberta's first cousin) because they fill out the story and explain who many people are. I had a mysterious son on 1 line of my family, George Willis Young. It is clear that this is a family name. Then I discovered that his mother's brother-in-law was George Willis it all made sense.

I have so enjoyed y'all as a couple and a wonderful resource for juicy British history! But now I know Julie that you and I are kindred spirits because I too was laying out garland on Christmas Eve much to my husband's chagrin. "Leave it alone", he said. "We missed anyone besides us getting to see it" But no, I was in a certain tizzy to put it up and not make it one of those "things" I once again "Intended" to do. And I loved it just as I loved what you did to the stair railing....beautiful and perfect. And, just like you I have put Mapperton on as I......take down decorations.....by myself. Ah, well. Hi Julie I am also from Illinois (Des Plaines) I love all your videos my dream is to visit England someday. As I was watching video listening to you talk about Alberta and Kate I was wondering if you knew that Kate Buckingham’s father built her a home in Mettawa Ill. Which is now owned by Bill Curtis I’m sure you remember him a good old Chicago news reporter. Anyway Bill and his wife have restored the house and gardens and turn a bunch of the acreage into natural wild preserve. It might be in your interest to contact him. He is such a sweet man. I have visited the gardens there and it’s beautiful. Thank you Julie.
