It is unfair to Katelyn Ohashi to talk about why she didn't go to the Olympics without talking about her serious injuries that played a significant part in derailing her Olympic path.

If she wouldn’t have dropped back to level 10 to preserve herself and be able to compete in college she probably wouldn’t have made the Olympic team anyways, she probably would’ve burnt out (even more than she may have already) and had a massive career ending injury. I think college was the best choice for her

This is not a surprise for anyone who understands this sport. The level of difficulty needed to achieve a spot on the US olympic women's gymnastics team requires an almost unbelievable amount a difficult skills. These skills require an excessive amount of training in order for them to be consistent for the athlete. The NCAA competes every weekend and therefore the requirements for that organization are far less involved than the FIG. This allows the university level gymnasts to be competitive and still remain capable of studying and avoiding unnecessary risk of injury. This is not to say Ohashi isnt good enough to achieve a spot on the olympic team, she's amazing and used to be the #1 gymnast in america for a time (and I believe also possessed the capability of competing the most difficult beam routine in the world) . Its just two very different levels of competition. Some might say she could compete as a floor/beam specialist but with the new 4 person team rule its just becoming too difficult to earn a spot as a specialist. I would make an argument as well about the balance between age and athletic ability, but we are seeing more and more on the international level that gymnasts are staying very competitive right into their 20s and even 30s. A trend that I believe is a very good thing for this sport.

Why is this video even a thing? Elite gymnastics and the Olympics wasn't what Katelyn wanted. It nearly pushed her away from the sport forever. It wasn't until college gymnastics where she could finally express herself and find who she is as well as not having all the pressures of the elite world. Simple answer: Ohashi is a level 10 gymnast and you have to be an elite level gymnast to be eligible for the Olympics. To explain that a bit for people who don't follow gymnastics, there are levels gymnasts have to go to. The highest level is the elite level. Right before that is level 10. Elite gymnasts are the ones who go on to compete in international competition like the World's and the Olympics. You can choose whether you want to go on to the elite levels or stay at level 10. At one point Katelyn Ohashi was an elite gymnast and was actually Olympic hopeful and had just missed the cut off age for the 2012 Olympics. After retaining injuries for the 2016 quad, mostly in her back, she stepped down from the elite level and went back to level 10. This allowed her to do NCAA gymnastics. You cant be elite and do NCAA gymnastics at the same time. Moreover, even if she was an elite gymnasts, she'd still have to compete and place at certain international competitions just to qualify for the US Gymnastics Trials and then place high enough to get one of the 4 spots on the team.
@scoliosisqueen
@scoliosisqueen 5 лет назад
kjcpoper but you can be in Elite and NCAA simultaneously. Trinity Thomas is doing that now, though she did not compete internationally for team USA this spring. There are no rules preventing gymnasts from being on the national team and doing NCAA.
@Kpoper4life
@Kpoper4life 5 лет назад
@@scoliosisqueen sorry, miswording on my part. What I meant was going pro. I kept thinking about Weiber's case. While there's no official rule, there's no real benefit for Trinity to be training with a college team if she's still elite and not fully committed by NCAA

@M2r2am they are outliers. Most are between 16-20. The reason is because women's hips widen past puberty making the twists and subsequent landings more dangerous due to their bodies not being as aerodynamic. She would have to start doing skills she hasn't done in years since she quit the elite level.

I love that while he says Olympic track didn’t work for Katelyn, he clarifies that it’s because she was meant for something different. Too many times people think if one path doesn’t work - even after time and incredible effort - then they are a failure. That’s just not so! If you’ve put your heart into something that doesn’t work, you haven’t failed; you simply haven’t found your niche. Keep looking and keep faith, and hold on to the accomplishments you’ve made along the way!

She hated elite level cause it was very competitive and hard, people just assume she is the greatest gymnastics ever cause she was body shamed. Rules are different, its like playing a whole other sport.
@rrenatabp
@rrenatabp 5 лет назад
@@l.s3132 people are not assuming she was the best because she was body shamed. people are assuming that based on the results she used to get when she was competing in elite. she was great on the beam and the uneven bars, and she was at the same level as biles. however, injures plagued her (some say her coach didn't pace her well and she peaked too soon) and there was the mental abuse she was suffering from her coaching team. so yeah, people are not pulling it out of their asses when they say she WAS, at one point in the past, one of the best gymnasts ever. whether she can get back to that level or not is another story (plus, it doesn't matter if she can because she doesn't want to so lol)

What people from the non-gymnastics community don’t understand is that college and elite gymnastics are two completely different realms of their own. Sure some gymnasts, like Brittany Rogers and Shallon Olsen, can juggle both collegiate and elite together, but the requirements for both are so different from each other that’s like training for another sport altogether. Many US gymnasts are able to go to the Olympics because they have professional sponsorships supporting them, but at the cost of giving up their NCAA eligibility to compete and attend post-secondary.

As a British citizen I wasn't aware of the difference between college gymnastics & Elite gymnastics so this video has been very interesting. It's a terrible shame that the less formal & more personality led style of college gymnastics isn't introduced into Elite levels throughout the world. I suppose it's because at the heart of the Olympics is the quest for sporting perfection only, entertainment play's no part in it I wish there were other countries who adopted the American college gymnastics programs, it would make getting to see this amazing gymnast show casing her talent & the sheer joy it brings much easier for those outside the US. Having learnt of her story, I am a massive fan & I wish her all the best that life has to offer She is an inspiration

Obvs this isn't for people like us who understand the sport, the very title alone is enough to distinguish that. But what I will say is that tjey could have a done a much better job at explaining even some of the basic differences between elite and ncaa/level 10 eg how some still do both (Trinity Thomas), some return to elite, even if only for a season (Brenna Dowell), whilst some give it a whole second shot post graduation (Mohini Bhardwaj). But yeh like I said, this was clearly to help educate those already know the sport, not existing supporters.

@@Glen.Danielsen yes but that still doesn’t change the fact Kat wasn’t good enough to compete at the Olympics, there’s no way she would have made the team. I suppose so. Yet. I find myself wondering why I prefer to watch Katelyn, rather than an Olympian. Probably because of the artistry and personality she is allowed to inject into the routine that an elite athlete can not; due to the high level of difficulty and technical skill required of the elite athlete. So, at the end of the day I seek out those NCAA competitions and if I miss an Olympic performance I won’t feel too badly.

She won't go cause elite level is just on a whole other level, people just assume she is the greatest gymnastics ever cause she was body shamed. People now a days think with their feeling not with their mind. Don't get me wrong she is great at college level, but Olympic level is a whole other story. Rules are different, its like playing a whole other sport.

For everyone saying that she would never have made the Olympics. Fact. We don't know, we never will know if, whether she had chosen the elite route after everything she felt, she could have been better than Biles. But she didn't want that and went collegiate, and has become one of the biggest names and an international sensation.

Simply she wasnt paced well, its not because she wasnt happy, many gymnasts werent happy and were pressured which sucks but thats the sport, it should change but thats how it is, its brutall...but the gymnasts they ended up going to the olympics because they avoided injuries and were paced well, valeri liukin made her compete a 7.2 balance beam routine while she was about 14 years old, for people who dont know alot about gymnastics, a 7.2 is unheard of in difficulty , she did insane skills that she never needed to especially at a young age , she burned out and eventually had to drop to level 10 , ofcourse her happiness is most important but im saying she would have been one of the most successful gymnasts had she been with a different coach come @ me ..ohashi could have made become a national,world,olympic champ ..just soo frustrating to know that she could have had the best of both worlds, because she was had insane amounts of potential ..

people say this and that, but this is the way it used to be, there was a lot more artistry and dance in the mid 90's to pre athans olympics that slowly erroded away since now its more about strenght and hight elements, but I remember you could see the elegance as the russian and ukranian athleats as they would dance as they moved around the floor and beam, think svetlana korkina, or svtlana bogenskia the bellerusian swan they used to call her, or the way dominique mochianu used to play up he cuteness to the audiance back then.

Theres a giant difference between college gymnastics and elite Olympic level gymnastics. Her difficulty isn't even close to being high enough to make the Olympic Team. Especially the U.S. team. Anyone who thinks she belongs on the Olympic team knows nothing about the sport

Did y’all watch the video? She’s beaten Simone Biles before, she used to be one of the top gymnasts in the world but she chose to go the college path because of the stress in her life and on her body. I believe at one point she had the most difficult beam routine in the world so yes she could have gone the olympics route if that’s what she wanted, which is what this video is addressing
@l.s3132
@l.s3132 5 лет назад
@@bartrese Either she was making it up thats she chose to go to college or she doesn't have the work ethic to always compete with the highest level. Dude who chooses to go to college if they have the ability to go to the Olympics. In all sports they tell you reaching the top is not as hard as staying in the top, specially in a sport like gymnastics.
@sarahwilcox6257
@sarahwilcox6257 5 лет назад
@@l.s3132 to clarify stess on her body, she was dealing with intense back and and neck injuries. I don't think those have anything to do with work ethic, if anything they show how much she worked through pain. She was on the Olympic path, but you need your neck and back to ya know continue the sport and like function in general. Also being a college athlete still takes an incredible amount of hard work, and is a very realistic and full life path. Being an amazing gymnast AND having a degree? Seems just as fulfilling and impressive as an Olympic path.

This didn't seem to answer the question. Is he saying that shes too good for the Olympics? Was he trying to say that, already being a college graduate, that she's too old and too advanced in her career against the much younger competitors? Nothing he said I liked and didn't see an answer. I'm now questioning if Simone didn't compete because of some corruption in the system that wouldn't let Katelyn enter the Olympics.
@barbarachaplin886
@barbarachaplin886 2 года назад
Mastermind8908 No. She competes at the college level, which is a lower level than the gymnasts who are on the Olympic team. Her level of difficulty is not high enough to make the US Olympic team. She is also not too old. Female gymnasts used to peak in their teens, but now some are older. At the Tokyo Olympics, for example, in the floor exercise, the medallists were 21, 30, 24, and 21. (Carey won gold, Ferrari won silver, and Murakami and Melnikova tied for bronze.)
