Why would anyone in their right mind put a car tire on a motor bike? My opinion on Darkside

When I first found this darkside thing I thought they were crazy! But the more information I read convinced me they cant all be crazy surely. So I investigated all the pros and cons for about 12 months before making the change in 2017. I put that 300+kg cruiser bike through some SERIOUS testing dry and in the wet before I took my wife for a ride.
The following are some common questions and observations.
Q: What are the advantages to running a car tire on a heavy cruiser or touring type motorcycle?
Safety is improved with better braking traction, better wet weather traction and higher weight bearing capability.
Also expect a smoother ride with better straight line traction and up to three times the life of that expensive motorcycle tire that still had plenty of side tread when the center was worn out!
There’s also the Run Flat option if you’re worried about punctures but trade off may be a firmer ride.
Q: So how much contact patch does a car tire have compared to a mc tire?
A motorcycle tire only uses 10% of it's available surface at any given time. A car tire uses 100% of it's available surface at least 50% of the time (assuming you’re going straight half the time and turning the other half).
When leaning on a car tire you will never be on less than the 10% patch that you would have with the motorcycle tire. If your leaned to the max you'll have about 10% of the available surface being used. Any lean less than max will increase that percentage all the way back to 100% as you straighten the bike back up (see the diagram at the end of this video).
Q: Does the bike handle differently and will it handle the curves?
YES of course it handles differently. Requires a bit more effort to "turn in" more noticeable at low speed but thousands of people have been riding twisty roads on car tires at speed for many years without problems.
Q: Will the car tire ride on the sidewall? That sounds dangerous!
UPDATE 2021: This will depend on the type, brand and/or model of tire and pressure. If the sidewall is too flexible, it MAY ride on the sidewall AND THIS IS BAD. I found this out with a Dunlop SP Sport 9000 which has done 14000kms on my C109RT and is starting to get twitchy even though it still has heaps of tread left. Keep an eye on pressure and wear markers etc.
Q: Are there negative aspects of switching to a car tire?
YES. Due to the tire's flat profile it will want to follow road grooves and imperfections. At slow speeds it will want to stay perpendicular to the road surface. If the road is sloped to the right, the bike will want to lean to the right. Motorcycle tires do this too but the car tire exaggerates it. When you stop on that sloped surface, you need to put your foot out quickly and the bike may feel heavier to hold. If you have a bad knee or your boot slips out, this will potentially suck.
Small air pressure changes will affect the handling of the bike as well. Your relying on a certain amount of tire flex to maintain a consistent contact patch. Check your pressures at least monthly.
Q: How hard is it to get used to the handling?
Your bike will handle differently as explained above. Once you work out the optimum pressure for your tires, it won’t take long to get the hang of it. And just because you have better traction now, doesn’t mean you should push harder. Remember the Darkside is for big heavy bikes, not sport bikes. Relearn the bikes capabilities and stay within them.
UPDATE 2021: Because of the extra rear grip confidence, there is a tendancy to push that land tractor faster in corners especially in the wet. The front will let go before the back ever does and this is BAD! My current front tire has started slipping in the wet and its only half worn. Finding a really good front tire is my new mission and I'm willing to pay top dollar for that.
Q: Are motorcycle rims and car tire beads designed to work together?
NO, they are NOT but they WILL work together. The bead profile is different, making some tires difficult to seat the bead especially on 15” mc rims. However, there are tips that make this job easier. To date, no car tire has fallen off a motorcycle rim.
Q: Which car tire is best and where is the proof?
A good quality car tire is often cheaper than the mc tire - don’t skimp on quality. Spend a bit more on a good car tire with a symmetrical tread pattern (the pattern on each side of the centre is the same) and a rounded shoulder.
It's not my intention to convince anyone to change. But if you've read this far you must be curious like I was.
There are many online forums. Search for and join these groups to get accurate and proven information from experienced riders who are out there doing it on a bike like yours.
Darkside is not for everyone and there’s no shortage of “experts” with compelling arguments against so do your own research and make an informed decision.

This is an excellent video. Direct and no long spans of talking about stuff or selling things. The points are short and straight forward and the camera angle view placement is genious. Very well thought out and very well done. Thanks, I had no idea what darksiding was, now I have a comfortable grasp on it.

Been running a Mich Defender on my VTX1300 for 5 years now. I absolutely LOVE the traction I have with this - especially in the rain. I've put 40k miles on it and am ready to put on another one after this season. It still wears more in the middle like a motorcycle tire, but I suspect it's because it's been slightly overinflated. It's not the cost or coolness that I'll never go back, but for the performance that I will always ride darkside (on my cruisers).

What an awesome description of the pros and cons of running a darkside tire! After similar research of the "darkside", I went with the popular, at the time, Goodyear Triple Tread on my '07 VTX 1800T IN 2012 and it lasted till 2019 with 54,000 kms approx. Went back to Metzler 888's till this year...approx 10,500 kms. I am now trying the Hankook Kinergy GT darkside with an Excedra G701 for the front. Also trying dynabeads in both, 3oz for the rear and 1oz for front. Come to the darkside!!

Kudos rick for such a thorough and balanced discussion of this hotly debated subject......more hotly debated by the naysayers who have never researched the subject, or are just plain ignorantly biased against it based on theory. The clincher was the side-by-side comparisons of contact patches at different lean angles.

Great camera work. The Boss Hoss motorcycles used car tires for several years before a motorcycle tire was manufactured that was large enough. I never had any problems with it with 355 HP and 385 lb ft torque. I had more torque at 1500 rpm than any street bike makes at any rpm, and no slippage Yes, we also used car rims, but we are at decent lean angles with 1000 lbs plus my fat ass pushing down on it. I think with a quality tire it will work fine.

I have several darkside videos on my BMW 1600GT. I ride hard in the mountains of Utah and you simply can't tell a difference above about 30 MPH. I've been a high performance driving instructor for BMW, Porsche, Ferrari and other groups for over 30 years, as well as being a licensed MSF RiderCoach. It really is a wonderfully simple solution to 3000 mile rear tire life, as the K1600 rips 160 HP and 129 lb ft of torque. Great camera angle btw! Might need to make another film in the spring, as I have 2 K1600s, one Darkside and one not. Follow along if you're interested! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hz7lDThb9uY.html

Here are the FNG questions: a) This is a rear tire solution, not a front and rear tire solution? b) Any insurance issues if there's an accident, could insurance claim be denied claiming because you weren't running a motorcycle tire vs car tire, and c) same question about bike a warranty, I still have about a year left on the my warranty, but hate to save $100 trying out a new tire set up and then have an issue and BMW claims it was due to running a car tire. I want to put this on my BMW r1250GSA next spring since most of my riding has been 1-4 hour daily trips for work, 3-4 days a week. Thanks for all the tips.

After changing my last car tyre @30,000kms I found 1of 2 rear wheel bearings dangerously worn out! Right now, there is a Michelin Commander II 200/55 R17 mounted... what would you people recommend with respect to size/model. Ya people keep talking about wear on the sidewall and it's non-existent because it never runs on the sidewall. the additional traction comes from the flexing of the contact patch of the car tire. They are superb in the rain because of this. I feel a lot safer than riding with the Dunlops that come from the factory (junk)
@joonya4427
@joonya4427 6 лет назад
At 40 degrees of lean you are riding on the side wall. If you don't believe me, check out the following www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/10-reference-faq-forum/400426-design-differences-between-car-motorcycle-rim-tire.html (warning - this article is long and very technical) Now maybe you don't normally lean this much, but what about in an emergency swerve situation? Do you really want to be riding on the side wall, even once.
@spanky522
@spanky522 6 лет назад
I guess my bikes lean angle isn't that far over so I never ride on the sidewall. No issues here for me. The tire grabs like glue.
@joonya4427
@joonya4427 6 лет назад
What about in an emergency?
@spanky522
@spanky522 6 лет назад
In an emergency (I've had a few) I feel much more confident with my car tire on than any motorcycle tire I've used. They handle as good, and stop much faster because of the added traction. In a situation where I had to maneuver around someone or something in the road, it wasn't an issue. Once you have one, you will know. Unless you have tried one, you will be skeptical, as I once was, but after riding so long with a car tire, you forget you have it, until you need that traction, and that's where it has the added bonus.
@joonya4427
@joonya4427 6 лет назад
Personally, I would never try one. The bead mismatch alone is enough to convince me. I've never stabbed myself in the eye with a pen. Maybe I would love it. Point is, you don't always need to try something to know it's not for you. I regularly crank my bike over to more than 40 degrees, and even DSers admit that a car tire at these angles becomes a problem. I only argue against DSing because I want to see better information available to my fellow bikers. The main argument from DSers about the practice being safe is, at best, built on incomplete information, but I believe that it is actually built on a number of argumentative fallacies. There are plenty of examples in history of things going very wrong when people had failed to fully complete a reasoning process. The Titanic, for example. Let me know if you would like me to explain more. If somebody can give me a fully reasoned through argument, not built of incomplete information, or fallacious reasoning, then not only will I leave you DSers alone, I will defend you. Unfortunately, that has yet to happen. Ride safe dude, or as we say in my part of the world, keep it shiny side up.

I tried one for a while but did not like the changes it made in the handling. Bump steering at slow speeds on uneven pavement, a m/c tire will do this also but to a much lesser degree. I did not like the lifting of the rear of the bike in curves as the side of the tire moved under the center line of the motorcycle. The bike also wondered a little going down the road if the pavement was grooved or uneven, again a M/C tire will do this also but to a much lesser degree.. I would certainly try this again if ever there is a more rounded car tire available to try.

I just replaced my first CT on my GL1800 with another CT. The original Kumho runflat was pretty square but I was still able to drag pegs regularly (this is not hard on a Goldwing). After three years of commuting and touring it had worn down to the bars in the middle and smooth on both "corners". The new one is a Yokohama Envigor which has a more rounded profile to begin with. Noticeably more aggressive turn in and no hump during the transition. I'm glad I had to look for a different CT. As much as I enjoyed the Kumho and it's profile, I think this Yokohama will be even better. I keep waiting for the hordes of people who found a CT to be a horrible experiment to post their real world experiences but it never happens. Next time a tire change is in your future, maybe check out current car tire profiles if you are still interested. Or not, whatever you want to do with your bike and money.

Interesting fact: What happens with a motorcycle tire in a corner is the tires' are now rolling on a smaller circumference (conically, due to their shape). This creates the sensation of smoothly transitioning from upright to leaned to upright again and so forth. The "lifting" sensation you feel, isn't so much lifting (slightly, yes) as it is the effect of the rolling circumference of the car tire NOT decreasing to the same extent, when leaning, as a motorcycle tire, without the conical effect to smooth that transition. I know, ABSURDLY simple explanation and I probably cocked it up somewhere but, eh...

The answer is if your bike cannot handle an automobile tire don't use it. If your ground clearance is a problem your bike is not suitable for use of an automobile tire.
@6Twisted
@6Twisted 4 года назад
A motorcycle tyre is curved to give you predictable handling and a similar contact area at every lean angle. Sure a car tyre gives you more contact area in the middle but comparably less the more you lean. I ride an MT-07 and the handling gets progressively worse as the tyre squares off. I know it's time to change it when I can feel the edge as I lean and I start having to fight it to maintain a steady lean angle. If you want more contact area from your bike tyre, decrease your tyre pressure, don't ruin the handling and void your insurance with a pre squared off car tyre.

I'm also curious about this topic. I have a 2015 HD FLHTK that I'm thinking of switching to a car tire. The video shown in this thread shows a side view but the one I'm linking to is a centerline view and makes me wonder about the contact patch many are stating as being more than an MC tire in a corner. MC tires are softer compound giving more grip so all things equal, in the linked video here, I'm a little worried that in a corner you lose a lot of the advantages of the straight line contact patch. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QwSSXHanpv0.html or even this sport bike video which shows it handles well though... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rNlhHBr9-1I.html or this guy on the Tail of the Dragon... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ibUAtyggAYs.html My things is that contact patch in corners is not flat as some stated and it really is about the same as an MC tire yet with a less sticky tire. I wonder how that handles in the cold weather with roughly the same contact area in a corner with a harder compound tire? Not being negative but more curious. I wish more studies were done and MC rims could accept car tire bead patterns, or we had a choice in rims to accept car tires more readily.

The size of the contact patch also depends on PSI - higher is firmer with less bend. I run 38PSI and you can see the flex in the tyre. I'm not sure why people talk about contact patch size. It has nothing to do with traction. What a larger patch size does is cause hydroplaning and that's all it does.

@BAMABIKER for proof look at a car tire vs a motorcycle tire. Boom! Your bike is not a dragster or a car. Racing motorcycle tires have a round profile. Car tires are made for cars. Also I doubt you even running $600 car tires so why campare those to the cheap tires you use? Kind of a bait and switch there. Nobody racing a motorcycle on a road track uses a car tire. It's not even allowed. Common sense is lacking on your end. Common sense should tell you to use scientific knowledge and not common sense. That's how common sense works.

There will always be nay sayers and I can see where they're coming from, but I do know that a car tire gives me better traction (fact) during take off, stopping and in the rain. The cornering issue for me is NOT an issue because I'm not running a sport bike and don't ride like they do. I haven't heard of any car tires failing during riding (maybe they did, but I didn't hear about it) so they seem to be working just fine. Thousands of riders agree with me and I feel much, much safer with a car tire on my bike than the stock DUNLOPS that to me, are JUNK. No mileage, no traction and wear out way too fast. To some, they will never stay from the pack and stick to what the "experts" recommend. They will go by the book on everything they do because for what ever reason, they won't color outside the lines or try something different. So be it. Do as you will and I will not be one to push experiences at you so you will try them. Do what ever you want. I am not a bible thumping preacher who will try to push my religion onto you. It's not the failed O-ring on the space shuttle people. It's a dam car tire on a motorcycle and it just plain works, just not for YOU. Ride safe!! I do.

First of all, join the Darkside group and search for your bike model. Ask them what they use. No one had the same tire as me so i started with 32psi and then increased by 2psi until it felt awesome. Then on the next rainy day i geared up and tried to lose traction. The VL1500 stage1 would wheel spin easily in the wet when i had a motorcycle tire on - scary shit! Not now. Straight line wet braking massive improvement on bike tire. With a GOOD car tire on the back, your biggest problem will be front grip as you push harder in the wet. Take it easy.

I tried riding my car tire (Kuhmo Solus 205/15") with 35 lbs. in it to start out with. Then I tried going down to 30, and it seemed to ride better, (softer, smoother) but slow speed turns were a bit harder to maneuver. SO I tired going up to 40 PSI and that made a big difference on handling. And after some experimenting with the pressure, I run 35-36 now and pump it up to 40 PSI when we load it up with full saddlebags, full trunk of gear and a passenger for long trips. It's just plain better for all practical purposes for me and I don't see me going back to a bike tire any time soon.

Does your insurance and liability still apply when you’re using automobile tires on a motorcycle? Also, you are operating under the premise that a motorcycle doesn’t have a sufficient tire contact area, and therefore a variably oversized area is desirable. Why do you think the beads and sidewalls are so different between car tires and motorcycle tires?

Not sure if its been said before, but larger contact patch should also burn more gas. I have a 2000 Valkyrie and have been following this dark side too. The way I see it, it’s gas usage verses tire wear. Have also read that some tires raise the bike up when cornering (or at least it feels that way), something you get used to. I’m sure I will try it, but will also be tracking gas usage on regular ride roads. Not sure this will be a good test but I’ll see…

A motorcycles contact patch stays consistent and predictable. Also the equation for friction (traction) does not include surface area, so by running a car tire with a harder compound that's meant for a heavier vehicle you are lowering the only two variables used to calculate friction values. It's worse in every way possible.

This guy is about as wrong as a person can get... if it gets more traction, why wouldn't every racer be doing this? The only guys that run square rears are dedicated drag racing bikes that never turn. This will give a tad more traction when perfectly straight up and down, but who cares unless you're drag racing, because it also makes the bike not turn for shit, and as soon as you lean you get less contact patch than a proper MC tire. Also traction is not about "largest contact patch" it's about PSI on that contact patch as well as rubber composition and carcass flexibility... an oversized contact patch gets super sketchy in wet and slippery contitions (hydroplaning)....

simply put......a performance bike would never dark side, because the quick transition from right to left is needed, and the lean is MUCH more extreme. On a large cruiser , your would be dragging pegs before you reached that angle. Plus the large bikes weigh enough to flex the contact patch. So basically, if you ride a little zipper death bike, dont do it. If you ride a cruiser , a tire thats safer, and lasts 4 to 6 times longer is a great choice. My gold wing is 900 pounds empty,,,,,thats a new tire set every year at a stupid price

Hi Perry, sorry, only just seen your comment. I dont think I'm close-minded as you call it, I'm just not willing to fit critically important stuff on my bike unless the bike designer and manufacturer recommends it. The whole concept of fitting car tyres to a bike seems very silly to me, they aren't designed for it and it could be dangerous. I guess the bike handles like crap in the twisties, even a squared off motorcycle tyre is a poor handler so a car tyre must be dreadful. Maybe some riders aren't bothered about handling qualities, maybe they dont ride many twisties, maybe they cant tell the difference between a good or a bad tyre, maybe theyre very concerned with saving costs, maybe they're not too concerned about safety? I've stopped trying to understand their reasoning. All I can say is, whatever their reasons, IT AINT for me.

All the technical and engineering info diagrams etc would suggest don't do it. Especially the rim versus bead cross section. But, I asked myself, how can thousands of riders world wide have got it so wrong? Surely the fatality rate amongst Darksiders is disproportionate? The fact is, we are the test pilots, and no one has died where the single cause was attributed to DS insanity. Of course it will happen, like a lightening strike one day. But hey, thousands of riders HAVE died due to catastrophic failure of the mc tire. That is fact. I personally have had my rear mc tire start to delaminate. My bike two up fully loaded is over 500kg.
