This spoke to me. I often still play like it's Smash 4 and shielding is a viable neutral option. I've had to tell myself it's not shield beats attack, it's well spaced attack and predicting opponent attack with movement beats attack.
Depends on the characters really. If you play gnw then it can be shield beats attack but if you play someone like lucas then you need good movement to beat attacks
@@danielashby9164 first stop treating all lucas players like those qp lucas’ who do you even play? Second pk-freeze isn’t even that good unless you use it when someone is off-stage to burn their recourses even then it could be avoided easily. And third the reason why I said lucas is because he has no oos options that is actually good (all his aerials have slow start-up or don’t have a lot of range or even both) so you’re going to be obliterated if someone sneezes on your shield. This is why movement is even more important for lucas so that he can whiffpunish people without having to shield while gnw has a oos option that is one of the best so gnw players tries to encourage people to hit his shield so that the gnw player can up-b them.
Another thing I would like to point out is looking for habits after a person does an aerial( even sometimes if the aerial is safe), some people like to shield after crossing you up with a safe aerial( even if it's like dabuz said for a second or two). It might not be a bad idea to drop shield and quickly turn around and grab them. I know dark wizzy is very good at getting turn around grabs ( and is the reason why I get grabs in those close range situations)
There's a lot of times when your opponent will shield after whiffing an attack. Looking for patterns like that where your opponent is likely to instinctively shield to avoid being punished is a good way to get grabs.
Great video! One thing I’ve been trying to work on recently is doing more jump always in neutral to whiff punish instead of relying on shield in scramble situations and this video helps put into context how I can condition grabs from this sort of thing
I feel you. Lucas grab range sucks for how much start-up it has and the faf for his pivot grab got nerfed really hard from sm4sh to ultimate so if you grab too late and miss then you’re going to get punished hard and if you grab too early then you will get hit by the move you’re trying to whiffpunish or it will just go through your opponent and not grab them.
@@ngotemna8875 tbh cloud doesn’t get much reward for landing one anyway while lucas has 3 kill-throws so it kinda hurts us more than you guys. I get what you mean tho like why is it frame 9 with a garbage grab range while marth and lucina have a faster grab that goes further. And why did they even buff their grab range in the first place while there are other characters that actually need it.
Also is it just me or low level players rarely do tomahawk. Aerials are so good in this game that it lead to a lot of grabs. (Characters like palu and wolf comes to mind.)
Because people rush it... It's not that hard of a concept to understand... I am not elite smash at all, but I never miss a grab or a ranked pro. But I always condition first wait a few strings, I see a shield go up that grab is mine after whatever follow up they have
@@jaxiban3587 Yep agreed. As it is right now, we can't even rely on the purple light effet of the grab to tell it's range. Grab range should be like Zelda and palu. Not only from his psychic abilities, but also character as big as M2 has no business having such a short grab range.
