I agree with this entirely. I remember once I hid my switch under my bed so I could play a game at 1 AM. Now this is incredibly unhealthy and might have been a sign of addiction. I never felt it 3-4 years later, I stopped being hyped about games. I just stopped looking stuff up. I was like "I don't really wanna buy any games right now" and I thought it was good but really my system was numb

I'm exactly in the same situation as yours, and I suspect depression of having made me feel this way about media overall. I used to be really addicted to video games and somehow completely lost interest in them, which is absolutely awesome since I don't have to worry about being addicted, but saddening because I cannot seem to feel joy in a form of media that quite literally built my personality. It became a problem because I started to have nothing to share with my friends, which ended up with them leaving me on the side because I had no interest in gaming.

For me there's some kind of blockage in my brain. Any time I look at my games this blockage is in my brain stopping all circuitry to play games. I don't know what the hell is going on. Ever since I unlocked super intelligence and logic, my brain completely shuts me down on playing games as a means to tell me this is the most ineffective use of your time. I've gotten too smart and ever since my trauma and emotions have been well too regulated somehow my brain stops me from playing video games. It's as if video games were all set up based on my trauma but without them I can't play no more. Almost like my trauma was my fuel/battery pack that got me playing. I'm scared and I can't feel happiness no more. Now I just lay in bed looking up at the ceiling wondering what to do now.
@astronomicalreason9807
@astronomicalreason9807 Месяц назад
@@jimx45You're not alone. I've tried bypassing the blockage and forcing myself to play. But the entire time I'm trying to enjoy the game my brain just keeps telling me "you could be using your time more wisely". And this is coming from someone who works 40 hours a week, exercises reguarly and no kids/wife. So I DO perform the necessary responsibilities that need to be done but still that blockage tells me "no".

Yep it is, I just tried playimg the last 4 years of some highly rated Switch and pc games and they all suck. They all have game related mechanics that ruin the game to be fun such as the game world ma being made like a corn maze so it takes ages to figure out where to go and many games telling you where to go but you still get lost due to it being made not properly or Quick time events being forced or devolving a game and making fall damage compared to the laat game not having it and jump height minimual and traversal taking ages and saveing game data bding limited to one save slot or a certain area bsing the only way to save the game or making your ability to dodge only 3 times in quick succesion and if you hit it 3 times too quickly that 3rd dodge opens you up to being killed in thr game, or almost all opem sorld games just feeling tedious blamd and boring, or forcing you to find some items or forcing you to use a certain stupid mechanic to continue the story.

100s of games and not one of them where as good as the older games I play and they somehow had more gameplay issues than older games and yet they cost around 60-120 for the games I played, what a joke and a complete blow to my money, now I use my money to drive my car if I get bored and other stuff, life is so dull nowadays and corporations can be thamked for that as they are ruining everything slowly and successfully and yet the people with no brain cells left are the omes whp enjoy the garbage that is worse than the older stuff, even my older manag collection and anime collection and movies such as spiderman 1 movie and band of brothers and tons of 100s of other movies and tv shows were way better than nowadays, everything is a complete joke and most fhings are remales or the same story told again and again and I am beyond sick of it.

I'm 32 right now. I started off with the Philips CD-I in the early 90s. Gameboy color/advance, ps1 to 5, xbox & 360, Nintendo 64 i had all of em. I enjoyed playing games up until the early 2010s. In my early 20s I was still getting excited for new releases, but the fun only lasted for a few hours for the most games, while the industry was way more developed. I have played games that are considered to be old trash today for years bacl then and I had way more fun than I have today. As a Assassins Creed fan, i got bored from playing Odyssey, Origins and Valhalla after a few hours. They just felt boring. Same thing with God of War, Ghost Recon, Shadow of War, RDR2 and many more AAA titles. Now I still get hypes for future releases like Hogwarts Legacy or AC Mirage for example but I know I will never have fun playing it after the first few hours. Its been a while since I have completed a AAA game.

This is very eye opening! I was wondering why for years why I lost my passion and desire overall to keep playing video games in my mid twenties. I thought it was just because I was getting older. It was no longer fun hardly. Up until recently I started playing again and now I'm having fun again, It's different, and also my perspective It's a little different. I'm 32 now. I took a break for years, and then I would play once in awhile maybe a month, and then a few months would go by and I would play it again, maybe for an hour or two. And I couldn't enjoy it as much. Then I almost took over a year off of playing games completely just because I wasn't having fun anymore. And now I'm actually having fun again! Crazy. I feel like a kid again 90% of the time.

This has given me a very large vocabulary, and as a result my proficiency in English language skills is within the top 1-2% of British children my age. I also recently got into pottery, which is incredibly fun and rewarding, and through my friends, I have started watching anime.

This is so true, but the only problem is that it actually happens with everything, for example I was enjoying my new job a lot I would actually wake up excited to go to work etc and when I finished work I would be bored and just want to go to work, then after a while I got sick of that too, it’s almost like you can’t enjoy anything sometimes, anything enjoyable will eventually become un enjoyable, maybe a new girl you meet, eventually you’ll get tired of her or more tired of her, it’s a strange thing how our brains work, it’s almost like we are too smart for our own selves. We’ve created a world where we have everything we want and yet we all hate it basically.

This is a great video, and it gave me a lot of new ideas. That said though... I haven't played videogames for 3 years. And whenever I try to get back into it.... I can't really find a game that looks fun anymore. Lot's of games feel the same nowadays. And it's like there's way more of a template going on with entertainment than it was before. While I'm convinced the dopamine story plays a great role in this. I also believe maybe things are a bit different with how entertainment is made nowadays... That said, I am a multimedia designer, and I do a lot of creative projects in my free time. So far being creative in visuals, storywriting, music, and creating experiences...still I've me a lot of satisfaction. Even if you're not artistic, I can recommend it to everyone. Because of something called the dopamine baseline. Each time you played videogames or any other activities that release dopamine your dopamine baseline slightly increased. You barely noticed it. It takes years to feel worn out. Videogames don’t release as much dopamine as drugs.

I would aruge younger people are generally much more easily amused and entertained than older. This video is very good but there are also other factors that comes into play, games have changed alot compared to when I was younger, and the structure in them is similarly designed to the social media platforms whose main purpose is to be as addictive as possible. As vincentvalentine4580 said, the primary focus of video games have shifted from being fun to being addictive, and there is a distinction between the two. Also as you get older, you generally get more experienced and smarter, which is why simple video games loses their appeal.

However there is a few games i really actually legit enjoyed like Re4 Remake being the hightlight of the year

I've been playing gta V and gta online for over 5 years but recently a the enjoyment was drained away cos of my fears of becoming a "loser" but i think video games shouldn't make you feel that way, that's an unhealthy way to play them, i've seen so many people playing Games and having fun with their friends and never ever thought of the games being something that destroys their life. The issue o had is that i replaced my life with games when i was a kid and now i want to replace the games with my life.

I would say the biggest factors are we are getting older, some of us are just burned out on video games, and some of us feel insulted by having the game hold my hand as I play the game. Do I play games? Yes I do, but with my responsibilities there is only so much time I can spend on gameplay per day, so I really am not in the MMORPG market at this point because I just can’t afford to be part of that. I mostly just play the old games that I already own as a “puzzle solving” kind of enjoyment.

There comes a time when people stop having fun playing games when they are 20 years old and above, and they will think that the fun can only be obtained from how they enjoy the game with others without thinking of competing and hating. agree? (I'm honestly really bored and want to be more productive at work.)

It definitely has less to do with the games and more to do with the individual. 9 times out of 10 when I hear this statement....its either the person is playing the same thing over and over and doesn't diversify their games they play or they are the type of person who doesn't do anything for long...the guy who cant watch more than 1 or 2 seasons of a show or jumps on something for the hype and puts it down etc. All my life I've been the opposite and I dont know why....anytime I get my hands on something I'm always one of the last to put it down and usually not until I completely scrape the bottom of the barrel. For instance any game I get I still have to 100% complete it and I've been doing this for 30 years and don't see it stopping.

This might be a weird comparison to the latest parts of the video, but you can look at the How much time you use as fun as the amount of money in a country. If the country does not limit itself and prints money everyday it makes the currency or money itself a lot Worse and less valuable, when you have fun all day everyday that makes your dopamin not as valuable

I agree amd don't when it comes to games today.I like the idea of being mindful of what you do every day and trying to unpressurize your dopamine system so you seek less simulated goals and seek ones in real life. I vhallenge the idea that as we age thats all that is at play. I think games have changed and we become wise with our time as we age. Many games have pursued monitozation and grinding to the point where there is no story or anything to take aeay when you shut the off. I cam think of many past game experiences that would still see me play today (example: Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3) I gave me something that says with me. Call of Duty Warzone.... Not so much. I can see with my older eyes that if I play warzone for 1000 hours I get nothing for it, so I choose, music or akiing, or the next james SA corey book. Those give me something. As well, shared screen multiplayer has died amd that was a worthwhile bonding experience. Bring that back and Id play with my old friends. I dont see much difference between that and a board game. Great thought provoking video!

The fact that dopamine reacts from video games or social media is like from drug, make me think that corps just think about money, make us mindless consumer. Start to be person that normal people do, do the natural habits, living the life. Back again, things that too much is always bad, balance is so important for this modern day.

Part of the problem is that most new big game titles are just repackaged versions of what's been being made for the past 20 years and have been designed specifically to give dopemine boosts as often as possible. You aren't pretending to be something you aren't for an hour or following a story, your snorting a line every five minutes with the next bit of loot or XP. Real life isn't as rewarding as it used to be. At least in my country, you can't just get a job out of highschool, or even college, where it's possible move up a company ladder and feel accomplished in life, and forget about raising a family. I agree with you that too much of anything is a bad thing and there's just a lot of everything all at once over the past decade. I'm not really a hardcore gamer per say, but I think video game/social media addiction is a symptom of our society, not the cause of the illness.

But i was so weak with lot of back pain. So i started working out specific for my job. Now my job is very easy and i enjoy it. I love it. And now I'm obsessed with getting stronger eating high nutrition. I was so weak and my brain so slow. But now. I'm much older stronger faster sharper. I do sometimes try get back to old memories games like.. but it doesnt feel like old times. Why? I used to enjoy this. Its like im forcing to play it due nostalgia but can't. It doesn't feel the same. These times are over. And i feel so bored playing now. Its strange?

I just want to start by saying that I completely agree; we can all make better choices with the right information to help mitigate this problem as end users. But I think a certain amount of onus lays on the industries that provide us with these products. Based on the fact that this very video exists, I would argue that the effects of such things in excess aren't widely understood, meaning they definitely aren't regulated, at least to the degree they probably should be. Games today aren't designed like the games from the turn of the century. They no longer care for box sales, it's all about player retention and microtransactions. The term is nebulous on purpose because these systems exist to keep you engaged and spending however possible. They are sinister in the fact that they are deliberately designed to exploit a slew of neurological mechanisms to ensnare people who are just trying to have fun. Microtransactions are practically omnipresent in the industry and seemingly become more egregious with each passing year. I think more time/budget/effort/passion goes into integrating these systems in modern games than what goes into designing new and innovative gameplay. The industry is sick because it is driven not just by a financial incentive, but an economic obligation to continue to generate such profit until there comes a time when something shifts culturally and a new medium of entertainment emerges that can be built up and hollowed out for revenue, just like the games, movies and music industries of old. The pornography angle is a whole other can of worms that deserves a video of its own because of how destructive it can be. I would've said the same thing for social media a number of years ago, but it feels like it gets less relevant as time goes on, a bit like a house of cards. It's astounding how these things (diet plays a large role as well) can all compound to form a lifestyle that sucks all of the joy and life out of you and leaves you feeling empty and hopeless. I know because I've been there. Judging by how prolific each of these billion dollar industries are in modern society, I can be assured that I was not the first, and most definitely not the last, to experience it.

Even though you have a huge point in this video, In my opinion other factors can also make a game less fun/boring. For example: One on One repetitive mission structure, bad writing, empty/Shallow world or characters, at least in appearance.. and many more facets and aspects. I'm gonna be 51 soon. I still enjoy videogames. Occasionally I take long brakes and it is tough to back into it. But then a gem like Elden Ring or GOW coms along and I can have long gaming sessions again. I think when you are older, it's a quality versus quantity problem. I used to explore every corner of Golden Eye or Turok. Try to do that with a modern Far Cry game for example. Games are getting bigger and more expensive to produce and ultimately to buy. Thankfully Indie games are here to save the day🙄🙄
