I still remember 20 years ago I was 21, I was pretty big but still raw. I weighed 190 lbs or so. A guy who was in great shape with round defined delts and round full chest screamed “come here and assist me”. He was doing incline db press. He lifted the 50’s up and asked me to support his elbows. At the time I could press 100’s or more easily but I was confused as to why his chest and delts were so much rounder and fuller than mine. That started getting me to realize lifting heavy is an intermediate mindset. To be advanced means lightening the load and focus on the muscle more

This is how I've always lifted, but in the last few years I've started to mix in higher weight, less range of motion, with constant tension on the muscle(meaning no "rest" at the bottom nor locking it out at the top) and I honestly feel like it's helped my overall strength(meaning general, out side the gym, applied strength, which I always felt I liked when I was younger.) Then again, I've never had that "intensity" that a lot of people have, despite playing running back and linebacker.

He is absolutely right. Yes I can incline and flat press the 120s-150s which I do from time to time for an all out heavy day, BUT I get a better feel with the 70s-100s. I train about the same way Nick does and have for about the last 20 years. Less chance for injuries, better for stimulating the targeted muscle, and I just feel like I get a better workout all around. Just do a month of this rep style on EVER movement and watch what it can do.

Why is he recommending to go fast on the contentric? Because you stimulate more of your fast twitch muscle fibers(the ones that are the most prone to growth). Why go slow on the eccentric? To reduce the risk of injury and also just more hypertrophy overall. Notice I said "more" instead of "only". So you saying it "helped" your chest grow, doesn't mean it is better to also be slow on the concentric. It means you still did 90% of the important stuff right(train consistently, hard, and eat right). Going fast vs slow isn't really gonna be enough of a difference to make you go from not growing to growing, but it will be slightly faster if you follow Nick's advice. If you want an extra couple percent of progress, you go faster on the concentric, and slower on the eccentric.

I personally never got interested in lifting when I was younger because I'd always lift as much as possible, then I started trying to work shoulder issues in my early 30s with bands and got almost immediate results coming from straight twig status to muscly twig the past couple years.

Well said. Take it slow. The slower you go, and the more control you, the more you build your muscles. You’re also less likely to hurt yourself.

You speak the truth ..people everyone has Different type of Genetics for muscle building... Control is more important than the weight... Heavy weight with crappy form will work for awhile , but at the end of the day you will spend more time in the ER not in the Gym.... Train smarter not harder..you will get their be patient.

Not an ego lifter but I use slightly different cues for dumbbell bench flat and incline. Same thing as far as the eccentric slow controlled but a different press. More of a mind muscle press. Start the contraction by actively flexing the pecs and have them carry the weight as much as possible with a squeeze at the top. If done correctly the triceps won’t fatigue faster than the pecs and become a limiting factor. I’m close to 100lbs on incline DB press and get 10-15 reps with 100lbs on flat as well as currently incline bar bell benching 245 for 5 reps

Facts. Can definitely grow without having to lift super heavy. Form and pushing blood to the muscle. Eveytime

For building muscle, the explosiveness is not as important as the slow eccentric movement then followed by the isomeric hold

A mixture of both is the key from my experience my chest looked like crap when I used to lockout until I learned time under tension that’s when I grew like no other

We ALL need reminding.. I train at a decent level and still find myself ego lifting to myself. You KNOW the rep speed, you KNOW the level of tension required but still lose discipline at various times in your session. I judge hiw good my sessions are by the amount of mental direct concentration I have on EACH rep.. I've done sessions before and been pumped and mentally flew through it almost detached.?

Tjat's true with all lifts but especially anything with dumbbells. I solely use DBs and always catch young dudes doing what he's describing during bent back pulls. Negatives are were the blood rushes into the muscles and creates the pump. Explode on the lift, slow down whem lowering...also full range of motion.
