Great concepts to think about. Put into words things that we kind of unconsciously understand but don't know why. Also, the melody example in this video really SHINES :)

Great video Troy. After years spent studying improvisation badly (or so I presume at this point), my brain is starting to "connect the dots" thanks to my composition studies. At first, I was improvising using chord tones solely and my solos were super boring, then they never sounded good because I didn't realise over which chord I was playing, and I was usually sitting on tensive notes without ever resolving them to a chord tone. Now that my inner ear has somewhat developed, I can tell if I'm hitting a chord tone or a non-chord tone and adjust accordingly. Keep up the excellent work! Any news on when Speed mechanics 2 might come out?

Cool, yeah it's an ongoing process. I'm still working on the SM2 videos... slower than expected as I'm also trying to keep up with youtube and patreon

I like that point - it is definitely a skill that can be worked on and developed. It's not some magical innate ability - if you can have a conversation, you have the ability to improvise. I think the same really applies to creativity. It's really a matter of training and increasing our 'vocabulary' and comfort in those area.

I have learned from Jazz (but it holds true for Rock and Metal) that non-chord tones or even chromatic stuff outside the key should be off the beat, so that you resolve to a chord-tone ON the beat. If you get that rhythmic hitting of chord-tones, the stuff in between is a lot less critical.

Is that really how collective soul plays that song? I learned it from tab down on the cowboy D chord. Seems lots easier to play the way you did.
@TroyStetinaMusic
@TroyStetinaMusic 2 года назад
Yes, although they are also adding the open A string under the D for the most part, creating a D5/A pedal tone. But for our purposes here, I just played it over the open D string (keynote) by itself.
