Why You Did NOT Get Promoted (AND What to Do About It)

Your boss won't always be transparent as to why you did not get promoted. Sometimes they will be honest with you and tell you why you're not getting promoted. But in the majority of cases, they will give you some easy excuse, like "we hired the most suitably qualified candidate". These kinds of answers do NOT help you understand the true reason as to why you didn't get promoted. Is it because you're not qualified enough? If you don't understand the true reason, then you can't get to work fixing it to improve your chances next time of actually getting promoted. Or you could be led on the wrong path and spend time fixing something that's not even broken!
In this video, I reveal to you five common reasons as to why people don't get promoted at work. These are reasons that your boss probably won't tell you about and maybe they can't even put their finger on themselves. They just know they don't want to promote you. It's up to you to find out why you didn't get promoted and to develop a strategy so you can get promoted next time.

Yeah, you're right. It's the best solution. My stupid friend was promoted last week, not me. I'm pissed beyond imagination. If I didn't have a loan, I'd quit immediately that day.

Not totally true you can do all that she said and still won't be. The odds of being promoted in general is about 3-5%. Most people are promoted based on emotion not merit. If you're male, height is key. If female, attractiveness. If you're a male and under 5'9" you have zero to no chance. If you're a homely woman, no chance. Even if you have done all that she mentioned.

Do you think people "MUST" stay in the same company forever? Like in the 1950s? Manage your career as if it is a company you own, selling services to big corporations. You are capable of delivering a higher grade service and this customer does not want to buy? Sell to another.

7 years at the same compnay, and overlooked for a promotion twice, but they were given to external hires. I always took on more work, became a problem solver, and had great relationships with all....time to move on, and ive lesrned to not stay loyal to a company.

The only reward for good and hard work is more work. And then hiring a external is grounds to quit

These "external hires" seem to be hiring friends in my experience. Not going out to recruiters because the in house people aren't skilled enough.

She sounds like she works for corporate. you can do all of these things and never, ever advance. but corporate profits off of all this extra work that you're doing.

taking feedback is definitely key. not to mention that you don't have a choice, i.e. the feedback is given to you whether you like it or not..... :-) hence, it is best to take it with open mind and see if you could benefit from them. if it gets too tough, then it is time to look for a another job.

@kararonin

@@jacksmedia7754 that's a real shame about why you didn't get promoted . At least you detected it was time to move on and didn't waste any more time with that employer.

New subbie! So I literally was being retrained to become a manager after stepping down from management because of personal issues. When the opportunity came for me to lead a shift on my own, I didn't do a good job so I lost the opportunity to move up again. I know it's because of confidence. Do you think it's a good idea to ask for another opportunity or seek work somewhere else? I know I can do it.

Not getting promoted and having someone less experience than you get the job equals change job aka quit

I used to work for two non-profit organizations and they really played discrimination, especially the executive director who only hired they friends and harassed several staffs. I had experience the most sicker job in American social services discriminated agencies in America. When they cheat the county government and you refuse to help them cheat then they hate you and silently attack you.

I have been overlooked for promotion many times despite being more capable than my peers due to- - I don't have the tradition university-degree path into the industry - I am generally much more efficient at the work to hand, and/or put in the necessary to get things done. "Too good at my job" for sure. - I don't promote myself much, a lot of what I do goes unnoticed except when there's an emergency or I'm not there to sort it - I am an older steadying influence, not a bright young thang - I don't care much for politics in the workplace TBH I have never expressed a burning desire to be promoted to my employer, so when I feel I need to get more I just go and look for a better paying job with slightly more seniority. I have always been great at what I do with a good work attitude and easily fitted into the culture - in short, highly employable. Employers should be smart enough to realise that just because you aren't sending weekly memos to your skip boss doesn't mean you don't want to progress or don't have ambition. They should pay attention to the work being done and the influence being made, and reward appropriately. Their loss.

Think how I can do more than is expected? I asked my boss to keep me in the loop, before I asked him flat out I listened as well as I could and made suggestions.......he kept ping ponging about ideas, so that I could not get anywhere or even lay out any plan.

This depends on the employers recruitment syle my current employer uses anyomous where the applicant dose not put their name or anything that could make them identifiable in the skills , knowledge & experience section of the application form that way it's free from bias and down to the applicants demonstrating in writing their suitability for the vacancy to make make through the sift to the interview stage of the application process. I think your correct as people are not trained in giving & recieving feedback.

Being principled and ethical might stop you from being promoted. Companies and their leaders want someone with a ride-or-die attitude, and being ethical just creates more work and fewer options, especially when ethical concerns are overcalled.

Meritocracy is not entirely true. They promote people as a retention counter offer, not because they are the best.

Absolutely great video. However, sometimes because of the organization's promotion budget(employees), only limited employees will get promotion even if everyone is giving the best performance. Is the budgeted number impacted by the promotion of an employee who is even doing a great job? Kara is this right?
@kararonin
@kararonin Год назад
Absolutely! Because promotions have to be factored into the budget. If there's not enough money, promotion will have to be put on hold, unless the individual agrees to a title change but no pay bump.

Toxic advice that fails to grasp that structural problems in a company can be impossible to change.....and you are stuck with something you did not implement in the first place. I would love anyone giving advice to give a real world problem instead of giving such poor advice as here. You always habe to be positive. How is that achievable?
