Build was a huge one for me. When I was skinny (aka frail af) it was pretty easy to dress stylish. I've worked long and hard on building some proper mass on my frame, but the style that I've upheld for years suddenly looked weird on me. Kinda got stuck in the habit of wearing sportswear type stuff as a staple ever since, but I feel like I developed an authentic sense of style that I can't pull off anymore and it's kinda shit tbh

People hate hearing this, but a lot of super stylish people have very little variety in their closets. They take a few ideas that work the absolute best on them, and they buy variations on a theme. I'm 6'5" and relatively slim for my height. I like pretty luxe, fashion forward jackets, somewhat arty or edgy tees, skinny jeans, and some sort of boot. Mostly in black and gray, but with a few jewel tones. Pretty much all of my clothes work well enough together that I could get dressed in the dark if I wanted to. On paper it sounds limiting, but since everything goes with everything, the combinations I can put together are practically endless. Having some pieces that only work with a few other pieces is *much* more limiting. Another thing people don't like hearing is unless you really love shopping, find a few brands that fit you beautifully, and tend to make things in colors that suit you, and don't deviate from them. It saves an enormous amount of time, and reduces, "I shouldn't have bought this. It doesn't work with anything I have." I personally love shopping, and will try on half of the men's department at Saks and a half dozen designer boutiques before lunch to find the most exciting piece that I know I'll wear all the time. My husband hates shopping, but still looks put together because he sticks to a few brands that fit him really well. It's really worth putting the legwork in and try on everything you can get your hands on, because once you find what works, you won't have to change often. Lastly, spend the most money on what you're going to wear the most. You see guys spending hand over fist on dress clothes that they'll wear once or twice a year, while wearing H&M the rest of the time. That's totally backwards. If you're someone who likes a great leather jacket that they can throw on over anything, go to town on it. If you're a hoodie person, go for really luxe textural ones. (My favorite hoodie is cashmere from Zadig & Voltaire. Perfect for "Fuck it Friday," flights, or long car rides. Worth every penny.) Spending a fortune on things that just sit for 364 days a year is a huge, huge waste of money. (Having said that, if you're someone who does like to dress up, I feel like the level of quality and the level of formality need to match. No one looks good in a cheap tuxedo. Period.)

>Another thing people don't like hearing is unless you really love shopping, find a few brands that fit you beautifully, and tend to make things in colors that suit you, and don't deviate from them. preach my man I heard multiple times someone asking me why do I always praise crazy colored wild fits on people when I myself mostly wear black and gray (with occasional neutral colors) - cause nearly everything fits with each other, no piece gets unused after a while just ccause the colors don't go with anything i currently own, I don't need to spend much time picking an aesthetically tight combo, most of it is appropriate for any occasion, and in the long run it's much cheaper... cheap, simple and easy way to look stylish
@Bunny-ch2ul
@Bunny-ch2ul 2 года назад
@@teratoma. I love people who can look great in a million colors. That's not me either. Just because you like a look doesn't mean it's going to suit you. (Oversize is hell on me, it's damn cool on others.) And yes, a limited color palate saves a *ton* of money. I mostly buy designer, but I don't have to buy a lot because everything I buy works together. Moreover, you can wear a black jacket three days in the same week. A red one? Not so much.

The 1/3th rule is really nice, but I must say that it doesn't always apply. Myself for example, I am 1.98 meters and have (even for that length) pretty long legs and a small torso. Having a shirt tucked into my jeans makes my legs look *extremely* long, like I'm a walking tree or something haha.
@axcolleen

Tucking in your shirt in your jeans then ruins the rule of third. If your legs look too long then it broke the rule.

that means proportionally you're not 1/3, not tucking your top in will give you 1/3, I think 1/3 always looks good, but there will always be different ways to achieve it because we're not all proportioned the same. I have long legs too, looks off if I tuck things in too much.

I'm 6' 4" only about 180lbs. I switched to 514 Levi's from 513s after the longest time when I was around 170lbs. It changed everything because it "squared" off my long skinny legs and made me look physically stronger, took up more space rather than emphasizing already slim legs with skinny jeans lol. It's difficult dressing to be honest. Size large T shirts usually have potential to be too small, or not long enough, and XL T shirts are baggy as hell and sleeves way too open. At this height and weight, anything you wear is going to stand out much more to people, whatever the style may be, gotta be careful.

This is true, most of the time you’re not just yet comfortable in the outfit. I bought a couple of clothes 3 years ago when I got into fashion and I was pissed because they didn’t look good on me and I couldn’t return them because I got them online. I just left dem in my closet until last year when I decided to try them on and I found myself wearing them more often, they became my favorites and I was pissed when I went back to the site to get more and they were all out of stock.

Ive always had a sense of what looked good on me and what didnt and this really put things into perspective. The 1/3 rule is brilliant, it explains a lot why when i wear cropped outers or tuck in it looks more aesthethically pleasing. Also the part of being skinny and short not being recommended to wear baggy or very skinny pants, that part is sooo true aswell. I have a pair of baggy pants and they rarely look good on me.

I'm a girl and I really love the 1/3rd rule look. However Its been really hard to implement it in my wardrobe. I dress in a masculine way and have a hourglass figure, so these 1/3rd looks look kinda weird on me because of my hips and then I start to look feminine. I hate it because I really love this style! However I'm not giving up, I'm still trying to find a solution.
@rami3465

There was a bit in the video about matching colors to your skin tone values, which reminded me of other ways-including skin tone-to determine which colors suit you best. That includes eye color, hair color, and the coolness/warmness of it all. Contrast also plays a very important role in determining the best color palettes for yourself. I think they call of that “seasons”? (Note: if you have warmer skin tones, gold jewelry/accessories look best on you. If you have cool skin tone, then sliver is best.) None of that is set in stone either, I think it’s just based off of color theory and stuff. I’m not sure if this channel is just for dudes, so sorry if I’m barging in, but this was really useful for me! I value comfort/practicality over looks most of the time and would like to change that up a bit, and this video definitely gave me the confidence!

I used to think that high-waisted bottoms are too sexy, so I avoided them like the plague because I didn’t want to draw attention to my figure (I have an hourglass body shape). I was always confused as to why I look stocky and heavy in low-rise bottoms and loose shirts. Lo and behold, high-waisted bottoms are truly the best choice! Yes, they *are* flattering but I try to wear them not too tight. The result it that I look good, *feel* good and my shirts finally stopped getting untucked 😄

The part where you talked about suddenly wearing something different from what you normally wear and thinking it looks weird reminds me of how it was when I first tried on my current favorite pair of jeans. At the time, I’d already been transitioning from skinny jeans to looser jeans, though it was always still tight enough that it was very form-fitting around my hips and thighs. While shopping for new jeans though, I found a pair of 80’s style mom jeans that, for the first time out of anything I’d ever worn, was only form-fitting at my waist and loose everywhere else. It looked very baggy, off, and kind of silly to me at first, but something about it drew me to it, along with the fact that it was the most comfortable pair of jeans I’d ever worn. Now I wear it _constantly_

6:44 it's pretty interesting that he mentioned that, bc i do that pretty frequently, i like to phase out certain styles depending on the season (i usually donate the clothes to the less fortunate) like, all winter my thing was all black clothing, and for spring/summer it's pastel blues, with brown and cream tones, it's always just an opportunity for me to try new things.

the perks of being slightly skinny with tall legs is that your body is basically 1/3 already. Just a simple tuck-in and you're ready to go. Still wanna buff myself a bit so i can look good in talk tops and cargo longpants though :))

Omg! Same with me and the skinny jeans! I sort of cringe at the almost jeggings I used to wear in 📸 🖼 But straight fit is all the trend now. I tried them on and felt so strange. But I've settled nicely with slim-straight.

Usually I say that whenever I wear short sleeve shirts, or really any shirt if I don’t have a jacket or a sweatshirt over it. I’ll just get a thin jacket (those thin exercise ones) and then roll up the sleeves

A year ago i was at the Point where i wasnt Sure If i could wear certain Things. I decided to Just buy a Statement piece and Started to try Out more distinct Fits. It really worked i stopped looking so Basic in my clothes. Also being a Designer meant Basic principles Like rule of thirds or color theory come naturally to me anyways. Applying those isnt as hard If you get used to it

I was 6'1 and 150lbs for a while and i wore long shirts and hoodies to account for being "tall" so I wore XL and L. Now i'm the same height and 160lbs and I have a few medium hoodies that I actually fill and I couldn't put my finger on why it looks better but now it makes sense, the 1/3 rule.

Cool video and awesome tips! Thanks!:D I am still left with a question - a lot of the time when I see an example of a 2/3 to 1/3 outfit (so the top half is longer) the proportions are not mathematically 2/3 and 1/3. If you measure them they are almost half-half. Or 60/40. But visually it looks balanced. Are there other factors that influence the perceived 'weight' of a part (in addition to the actual lengths)? Like something related to the color or the fit or something else?

This 3/3 rule is very important for styling. For example I'm a short guy, so when I'm wearing my oversized T-shirt I'll make sure to pair it with a short pants, or ankle pants. And when I want to wear a jeans, I'll make sure to wear a regular T-shirt or shirt for my tops.

I think you just need to admit you follow trends and can't think for yourself. People need to be more transparent about who they actually are. This is what fashion is about.

In my twenties everything looked good on me, in my late 30’s nothing does. The answer is your posture - Mines terrible now. Fix your body posture and you’re laughing.

It seems like for the rule of thirds to work on the top you either have to have a tucked in or short shirt/inner layer, is that pretty much the only thing you can do to achieve that look?

My boyfriend was struggling with picking an outfit one day and I legit just told him to wear a black T-shirt, tuck it into some black slacks/jeans, throw on a belt and wear some nice shoes. He looked so much better compared to when it was just an untucked shirt and jeans
