My biggest mistake in fashion was believing that I would dress better the more clothes I had, when in reality it was the other way around. Great video btw
Yea same. But once I built up a few basics to build around, it did create a door where when I do find a louder item I like, I can make it work with those sets. Like a black pant with a black coat and a tshirt with print. Or a blue jeans with a white shirt and a squared overshirt. Or a set with mostly basics and a pair of more visible sneakers. But then you get what Harry says. A wardrobe of mostly basics with some louder pieces that can go with many of those basics.
Yeah, I needed this is a reminder. I tend to find one piece I like and before I’m even sure I love it, I buy multiple colours of the same. Later on I find I don’t really love any of them
@@charliedalton1778 yea for basic pieces I dont mind. If the item is ry cool I dont mind owning 2. But for loud stuff, no... The loud things are there to compliment the basics, they cannot take over.
My biggest mistake was continuing to buy clothes thinking it would make me feel better about myself. Still love buying clothes but trying to stop using it as a form of therapy.
The tip about boots and other shoes that aren't sneakers just called me out🤣. I have been sneaker heavy for a couple of years but I realized a few months ago that I need to have some more options for different outfits and occasions as I continue to enhance my style. Thanks for the reminder!
Buying into the advice of wearing according to your age was the worst mistake I made. A full circle and I am back to what I love wearing and it just works (thankfully didn’t take too long to realise). It takes time to fine-tune your style to your shape and overall personality which has got nothing to do with age imo. Great video Harry as always!
My biggest mistake was purchasing an abundance of statement pieces and louder garments that I really loved without investing in my basics first. It made it really hard for me to wear garments I had without outfit repeating (which is not a bad thing, I just wanted more diversity for myself.) Great video as always my friend 🙏🏽🔥
My issue was not knowing which statement pieces are worth going for. For me, jackets and shoes are a lot easier to incorporate in different seasons. Statement shirts or trousers are harder to make a cohesive outfit out of (though can sometimes still make the outfit)
@@HarryHas to be honest, I get most of my statement stuff off of Grailed, just because it makes me feel better than I’m not paying full price for a garment that I’m relatively limited to wear haha. Much love my friend!
@@WeCanBeatTheSun I completely agree, and it can even be difficult to discern which statement pieces to buy, because they tend to be either boulder and pattern, or louder in color, and a lot of that requires mastery and understanding what works on your body and tone as per what Harry said in the video. With that being said, I feel like I had to kind of go through that process of learning what works and what doesn’t to be able to make better purchases now, which I feel has given me a good balance between statement, pieces, and basics that help me put them together in different outfits 🙏🏽🔥
First advice is golden. I had a stage where I just wanted to be simple and minimal, but at heart I am a musician and an artist. Eventually I started getting back into graphic tees tho a bit curated and I usually just buy from other artists (not generic mass produced shirts) and getting back into edgier clothing. Sometimes I dress preppy, sometimes a bit edgy. Basically, you can’t box yourself in. Don’t be just “one style.” People are wonderful complex beings so let your clothing be that way as well
I have tried changing my style few times. Three times at least. I wanted to wear more elegant clothes, as I was ageing I wanted to have more sophisticated wardrobe. It didn't work. I was always getting back to my casual, street style. Even though I just turned 50. So I guess my bigger mistake was trying to be someone else instead of being myself. Good thing it was just clothes that I have sold afterwards. I really appreciate the thing you said at the end. There are so many videos popping on my YT home page regarding fashion and messages what I should or should not wear. Ridiculous. That is why I value your content so much. Thanks for a great work.
What I really love about the channels from yourself and James Leung is there's a playfulness, a fun about fashion;l of finding your own style, but also a mindfulness of curating ideas for us to ponder. It's what makes Sunday lunchtimes such a joy to dive into. As an idea for a future episode .. a short while ago you mentioned the t-shirts from musicians you loved. It would be ace to hear about what the artist means to you , what you like about the t-shirt and how the two intersect. Also of the fashion options you've paired them with. Cheers again for an ace watch :)
Great to hear and glad you enjoy the videos. I would love to talk more about music but I did videos a long time ago and people weren’t that interested so I didn’t make more. I get it though. Music is such a personal thing. Have a good week
When I was 24 I figured my style from now on is just gonna be a checkered shirt and jeans until I die. Now I‘m 37 and dress like an add from a Sci-Fi movie lol 😂
Harry, genuinely love your advice and approach to fashion. I was starting to get a bit self-conscious with my wider fits since I'm in my 30's now and all the menswear fashions are talking about how it's only a Gen Z thing but then you said the magic phrase "today is the youngest you will ever be" and boom, complete mindset shift! :)
You should do a video about interior design, Harry! I like the ch24 you have and the various scandi posters etc. not to mention the lovely plant in the background
Just wanted to say that the 6:15 look fits you really well, especially the pants are perfect for you. I was surprised that it was an example of what not to do lol... But definitely wear what makes you happy! Love your vids mate!!
Great video ! And I agree with so much of it. I’m 47, and I still love blending a little bit of trendy stuff, with classics. I’m currently absolutely loving the trend of the cropped tshirt or camp collar shirt. It breaks up my waist nice and makes me look a touch taller while also staying nice and comfortable around my less than 6 pack abs. And, THANK GOD skinny pants are gone!
I can't agree you more. My biggest mistake was staying in the same style and avoiding any clothes that didn't fit the style. My style turns out to be boring.
My biggest mistake is forcing an item to fit in how I wanted it instead of how it was meant to fit due to trends ie. regular fitting shirt forcing it to be oversized
That last one about age hits home. I’m tired of watching videos of people telling guys how to dress when you’re older. Style is subjective. Age absolutely plays a mild part, but some of these videos are so restricting that they take all the fun out of it.
Completely agree with the second point. What some people, including myself at a certain point, don't realize is that real life doesn't look anything like how social media is claiming it to be. The sambas have been trending for a while now but where I live, on a normal day out I could see two pairs of those, max, on the streets. Don't let other people's opinions stop you from buying what you like the look of, of course that is if you REALLY do like it
I totally agree, my esthetic is 70% preppy and 30% experimental... Ever since I retired a couple of years ago I've been experimenting more and more with fashion. I am 57 years old and having a great time ... Cheers 🥂
Thanks for the body and age positivity, your look is not what I would wear nor what would suit me (bigger man) but I love your vibe. Strength to you 💪🏾
Personally i don’t buy a lot of trends, but the reason why is not because I don’t want to look like everybody else, instead it’s because I’m afraid I’ll be bored of the trendy item too quickly, since I didn’t discover the item on my own
It's a fashion video, but the saying, "You regret the things you don't give a go more than the things you do give a go" really hit me out of nowhere. That's genuinely advice I appreciate outside of fashion. Thanks Harry.
Fun as usual and sound advice. Biggest mistake? Knowing my style and wanting to adapt to what I saw on social media. Still got a bomber jacket in the closet. Liked the trend, liked the looks I did see - never did wear it. Happy Sunday mate and we usual, cheers from Germany 😊🙏🏻
Another great video Harry. I definitely relate to the dress for your body one. I used to be skinny but not so much anymore. So I’ve changed to relaxed fitting clothes. Have a good day. ✌️
Definitely true of trying to dress like an image in your head and one for a different body shape - I've recently bought so much stuff that fits the look perfectly, but when I wear it, it just doesn't work. So many fashion bloggers seem to be 5ft 8 and want to make their legs look longer with their clothes - which their outfits do a great job of - and they look awesome - but I'm slowly realising that what suits me is quite the opposite!
I wish I knew that dressing for your body type was a thing, before I had to figure it out myself the hard way. Now I'm transitioning into more fits that would work with my build, that really contradict what I used to like
Contrary to the other point, I don't love the Adrian Loafers, but what I realized is I loved the lug sole-style loafers ! I ended up getting a custom-made one, without the Kiltie and Tassle, and opted for a brass horsebit instead, it looks stunning, and been complimented for it ever since I got them
Excellent watching! And totally relate. Specifically on the rocker look and having a most muscular build. How about a video on dressing a slightly more muscular build? Thanks, Harry!
Thought of a video idea for you. Do a vlog style video where you go in to a store and pick out a few things. Then talk about how quality can be spotted and compare certain things. I think a lot of us dont know that well enough.
Long time watcher, new commenter and just realized i was not subbed lol. Just wanna say this vid is spot on. Your commentary & jokes were perfectly balanced with great advice and knowledge. Really loved this one, great vid
5:30 muscly legs does throw a wrench in a lot of pant fits, I found that out after a few years of working out and cycling. On the flip side you pull off shorts much better 😎
Got my own pair of Adrian last year they looks pretty cool lol but I prefer wearing them with lighter colored socks just to tone down the formal feeling 😂
A quick question. Everyone says buy pants according to your waist size. But waist is around or just above belly button then how does that make sense when everyone wears pants two inches down from belly button? Thanks.
Got any tips for someone who has been set in one style for a while and gets ridiculed if he tries new things? [for example, a cropped jacket, a ring, or a necklace]. The thought of getting laughed at stops me for trying the pieces out that I buy
Awesome video, mate! You definitely should ask yourself about how I know I can't do something, if some restrictive thought appears in your head. Often, it's someone else words from the past, e.g. mother didn't allow to wear wide jeans.
Made ALL of these mistakes lol. But going thru them all, you end up either keeping or ditching some aspects of those mistakes and incorporating them to your current style. Refinement is key! Regarding dressing your age, I always argue that there’s 70yr old men in Japan that dress better than even the most fashionable millenial! I’ve thrown off my 20yo/genZ coworkers one day when I asked them what year they graduated high school. When they asked me, I told them 2000. And they just stood there waiting, “uhh, 2000…what?” 😂 Sure, I might have good genes, but I’m sure my fashion choices is a huge part of it.
I stick to the same aesthetic because it makes me happy. If I’m wearing something I don’t like, I don’t FEEL joy 😂 I’m simple, basic black t, basic black Levi’s 501, Reebok Club C all white or 85 vintage…… or basic white t, white Levi’s 501, White Reebok club c or basic LIGHT LIGHT Pink t, EVERY VERY LIGHT pink Levi’s 501 jeans , WHITE or Vintage club c…… yes, monochrome minimalist and have been this way for over 20 years….. BEFORE “minimalism” was cool. I was born in The USA but raised in Nigeria and came back to the USA in my teenage and have been “minimalist” since because when I saw how difficult life is for the average human being in Nigeria(and many people on earth), it became impossible to make THINGS my priority….. so I simplified my entire lifestyle to leave more room for clarity, peace… more room to be able to provide support for those who need it…….I didn’t want to become a slave to my tools/things. I’m also an engineer so my mind needs as much space as possible so my fashion is very Marc Zuckerberg/Steve jobs/ Rick Rubin like, it is basically there to cover my nudity 😂 FUNCTION FASHION ! If I don’t need it, I don’t have it……. I keep it VERY CLEAN tho…… everyone has their reason for how we fashion ourselves.. as long as it gives you PEACE, confidence, joy etc give you room to be the best servant you can be to mankind ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ BLESSINGS TO ALL! love this channel ❤❤❤❤❤
My most recent fashion regret was buying *that* Ferrari jacket about 6 months before it blew up on TikTok, and all the fake F1 fangirls got their hands on it! I wore it to a race event last weekend, and the amount of sarcastic looks and comments I received was concerning! I sold it on Vinted the next day. Technically not a fashion regret, but definitely another example of social media influencing society’s opinions! Great video as always mate!👌🏼
