I like having three mains. Ur main main, ur main that is the counter to the counter of your main, and a very Unga Bunga main that is really weird to play against.
Key I can see the 2 pokemon trainers working if you guys main different pokémon but the links are a bit strange in my opinion. You guys do whatever you want though, it’s not my choice.
@volt I'm always first on games in my group of friends and i main the one i like, but what do you know my anoying ass friend gotta cry about I picking him/her instead of letting him play. For example i play pathfinder in apex and when ever he gets to pick first or before me he nabs him like a loot goblin
Same tbh. I've got 6 myself that I really enjoy playing. I've narrowed down my top three though for the type of play I'm doing. Ike's prolly my general main, Link for when I wanna play the zone game, and Roy for when I need speed. Outside of that I enjoy messing around with Richter, Robin, and Cloud but they're definitely a lower tier of play than my Ike/Link/Roy game. I've also looked at Lucario, Wolf, and Piranha Plant but I need a lot of practice with Lucario and Wolf to be more viable and while I have a ton of fun with Piranha Plant I already have waaaaay too many characters as is. I've also eyed up Ganon since he now shares some similar moves with Ike.
saaaame My list from most favorite to slightly less favorite is: Kirby(mained him from the start) Dr. Mario(really fun) Peach(I. Love. Float.) Roy(just fun) Lucina(way more fun than you’d think) Lucario(he’s fine and I’m decent at him) Palutena(boy those projectiles are mean) Falco(good aerials)
Chad Thundercock my mains are Palutena (those projectiles) Bayonetta (smash 4) Lucas (up smash) Ness (aerials and pk magnet) Corrin (fun to play and ho boy that’s some counter) Pit (side special spamming) Rosalina and luma (vs ness.) Joker.
*"these players are often called 'character loyalists'."* *"If you love Legend of Zelda and want to main Link-"* ... I feel extremely called out (Link's my main)
Shuka Bladds Yes, we do exist, haha. Though, in all my years of playing smash, I’ve never seen a dedicated Rosa player besides myself (apart from professional players of course).
how to find a main: look at tier lists and pick characters that are mid tier (B tier) or higher, go into training or a normal match and try out the characters moves and see if you like the way the character plays. option 2 pick random and try the character you get. option 3 if you just got the game, each time you unlock a new character, play at least 1 match with them to try them out. the most important thing is to decide what type of character you like, do you like ranged characters with projectiles, or characters with sword or characters with fists, do you like characters with tether grabs or normal grabs, do you like character with high damage charged attacks or quick characters, do you like small and light characters or heavy or medium wight characters, do you like characters with multiple jumps, or characters with attacks that have multiple hits like pit or cloud with his side special, or characters with good aerials or good recovery. just use this to find which types of character youreused to, like some characters have meteor smash or spike attacks, some have sideways recovery and some dont some have slide attacks some have dash attacks that make you muve forward quickly, and so on.
I picked my main based off not necessarily tier lists rather just people saying that pichu is good so my main is pichu I haven't decided on a secondary because I'm not gud well I'm atleast in the beginner-intermediate level but yeah
Better: pick whoever suits you better at attacks not because is low tier means its good for you so this comment is extremely bad since he’s assuming all the characters from B to up tier will suit you. Getting one because of his tier its a dumb thing because if it doesn’t go pretty fine with you, you are not bad at the game just he/she doesn’t suit you
@@Didagg half of the roster is in B tier and up, you will surely find one that suits you there, if someone is below B tier than they would suck, they could have bad recovery, weak attack damage, weak launching power, easily countered, to slow to fight against other characters, are too easy to launch, to big of a hitbox, and so on, im not saying dont find one that suits you, I clearly said find a character that has the attributes that you like, im not saying only to find a main that they enjoy playing, but one that is a good fighter and that suits them and they can easily learn to play them, why would you wanna have a character that suits you if you always lose, you should get one thats good, if youre a pro player you can beat any average player with any character, but thats only because theyre worse than you, the only other reason you would choose a character that suits you with them being bad would just be to easily get used to the character, but you would always lose, and as gamers, we all know losing isnt fun and it makes you not wanna play if you lose all the time, anything below B tier is low tier, aka bad fighters that are outclassed by most of the roster, most people online play characters B tier and up, i you play a charracter below B tier you will be demolished as you would be new to the game and people online wouldbe better than you, you should pick a strong character that suits you, not a weak character that suits you, you clearly didnt read the whole comment.
@@Kayso789 yeah but still pichu is mostly in A tier or S tier on most tier lists but pikachu is mostly S because he doesnt damage himself, but pichu is slightly better because he's faster and has a smaller hitbox, but he is easier to launch, but pikachu is slower and bigger and doesnt damage himself so he is mostly better, but if pichu suits you better because of his speed and hitbox size play him instead, pichu is more rewarding if you get really good with him.
I think there's also some characters that are a low tier but can do incredibly well in certain matchups and are really valid secondaries. Falco for instance is considered significantly worse than Fox, but he's been used in tournaments because he's got some of the best anti-air in the game. The highest jump in the game + up-tilt makes him super good at swatting people and despite his low tier can make him an excellent counterpick for characters that like to get airborne.
@Marqaun Dobbins in the case of smash it's a debate of 1 character or a few (5 is my example). I retooled the numbers to be more accurate to the situation of having multiple mains, as there aren't 10,000 characters to play as.
@@heartofdawnlight That's the thing, each character has tons of moves, so by using 5 mains you are practicing 550-700 strikes. That's not even factoring in movement options. While having 5 is far better then 1, you need to limit.
@@LegendStormcrow Exactly. I'd say three characters is the absolute most you should expect to be able to practice and get good with quickly. Obviously, that doesn't mean you can't play all the other characters in the game too, just that you're focusing on 1-3 in particular.
@@mattiswan1 i feel the same, if i play as Wolf im a " high tier scrub" play as Dedede "wifi lag king" even tho I only play those two cuz they are both my favorite characters and have the most fun with
I say your main should be the character you like the most outside of gameplay reasons, because then you're in the right mindset to see their potential and be more willing to take the time to "git good"
One thing I would recommend is to have a main but make sure to use other characters that are really outside of your ball park to get rid of bad habits and make sure you’re not a one trick pony. For example, I main Fox and one day I noticed how I jump way too often and constantly go for risky edge guards. After seeing this I decided to play Macky boy for a few days and what do you know, my ground and edge guarding game increased pretty significantly. I also have been playing Ganon recently because I realize that I up tilt all the time so I should play a character where up tilting is a really bad idea so I stop doing that
I main random simply because I find it fun. I’m not playing to be the best player, or get far in tourney. I live for the times where I select random, I get a funny look, and proceed to demolish him/her. I agree with this video, but it really doesn’t address fun. For me, I don’t think I would be able to stick with one character, as I wouldn’t have any drive to continue playing.
Indeed, I mained Ness in Melee, and I just eventually stopped playing. I questioned why after some time, as the game didn't feel interesting to me anymore. I later tried playing again, except this time with random characters only, and my interest held out for much longer. That's when I learned that I have my most fun playing a multiplayer game when my options are randomized. (And I am majorly bugged that Quickplay in Ultimate doesn't have a Random option.) Watching this video, there is a caveat: "The game becomes boring" is a perfectly valid reason to not pick one, as there is no point in playing a game if you're not deriving joy out of it. (Well, unless you're earning an income based on playing it or something.)
Just play Kirby, dude. Winning with low-tiers isn't impossible, many good players have made that very clear. Look at Zaki in Smash 4, placed decently with Dedede. Prince Ramen beat Zero with Palutena. Just accept that it might be harder to main a low-tier and main them.
You should be a Kirby main. Kirby has a good combo game and is fairly hard to punish once he has gotten in. The issues with Kirby are... well, his combo game. His issues are that *he has to get in,* which can be quite hard for a character with such low air speed and range. If you seriously main Kirby you will be able to find the openings where you can get in on and people and do a ton of damage. Not only that but even if you decide not to main Kirby, you should co-main/secondary/pocket pick/(whatever you want to call it) him as he has some odd matchups that he just classically wins for some reason, such as vs Captain Falcon.
i'm a kirby main and a respectable one at that. not only does he have great recovery, his combos are great. If you ever have any problems with coming back from a launch, just down B but please for the love of god, don't make my mistake. check to make sure you're over the platform. also, nothing more satisfying than killing a captain falcon with his own punch.
I don't believe in tiers. If you train hard enough, you should be able to beat most people. WFT is my main. I love her because she's ridiculous and throws people off their guard.
a tier list is just an order of what characters have the best options and combos and kills ect. basically how optimal a character can play. Tier lists aren't saying you can't win with a lower tier character lmao, you just might have to work harder with a lower tier to get the same results. You can always play a low tier and still win games
Jay Ayers I don’t use him as often as my other mains, but it’s still hilarious how good I can do with my Wii fit trainer. Nothing is as insulting as winning with yoga poses
pjigeon I do love that everyone agrees though that no matter your tier list, Bowser jr and the koopalings are in a low tier if not just the very bottom
This is how I got my main. A bunch of people were playing Super Smash Bros for Wii U and I joined them even though I’ve never played before. I wanted something like Lucario but I can’t find it, so instead I scanned the characters until I found the first character I liked - Rosalina and Luma. From then on she’s been my main.
Pokemon Trainer is three characters. It's worth practicing just one Pokemon and getting good with that Pokemon, learning their matchups, and then learning the next Pokemon. All three of Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon are wildly different and play extremely different from one another, much like how in past games Sheik players did not consider themselves Zelda mains, they considered themselves Sheik mains. Of course, you're always welcome to swap freely between the Pokemon, but the reason you shouldn't do that is the whole point of this video. Although it is completely viable to only use two Pokemon at the max since Pokemon Trainer allows you to play to your personal advantages. At the very least please do not be like those people that only switch because they lost their stock and now they're on their next Pokemon. I can not tell you how many Ivysaurs I fight that lose their stock, then get 0-deathed as Charizard because they don't know what to do with him when they get hit and are in disadvantage, and then just do nothing as Squirtle because they have zero knowledge of how to kill with him when the opponent is above 90%. You may think it won't happen to you, but if you're fighting competent players such as in tournament it will happen to you. Again, Pokemon Trainer is three characters that have massively different use cases. It is viable to swap between Pokemon in instances where you can use one's strengths, such as swapping to Ivysaur for his great ground game and pressure to end stocks or swapping to Charizard as he has two kill throws, but *if you want to improve* then your main goal should be to stick with the Pokemon you like the most and are the best with.
@@teamawesomeness7137 You are welcome to believe that. I personally consider Pokemon Trainer three different characters that can be swapped between in the middle of the match, as all three Pokemon are vastly different in terms of game plan and options. It is not the same as something like Marth and Lucina where if you learn one you can do fairly okay with the other, as their game plans are mostly similar. Also, your argument is half-assed since I can make every echo fighter on the same slot as their regular counterpart in the settings. Do you consider the echoes to all be the same character as their regular counterparts despite them having very different playstyles? Besides Peach/Dairy, Samus/Dark Samus, and Richter/Simon, which are quite clearly the same characters, even though they all have at least one notable difference. And on top of that, this also makes all three Miis be put in one slot. Do you consider Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter, and Mii Gunner all the same character? If so, do you think Mario, Lucina, and Samus are all the same character?
BananaBoySSB: "If you love Legend of Zelda and want to main Link? Then go right ahead." Me: Well uhh, What if that's how you actually found your main??? XD
I was gonna do that at first and try and main shulk, but considering he's the second most technical character in the game a trash player like me can't really do well with him. At this point I use Falco (watched keitaro play and thought he looked fun, he is) and Ganon (i've played him sense brawl)
Aha that’s how I found my mains,, through other game franchises. So my main is Zelda because of LOZ and my secondary main is Inkling because of Splatoon.
I too am a Character Loyalist. I love LOZ. The fact that Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf just happen to also be higher tier characters is just a lucky coincidence and now I burn people with Din's Fire for being filthy heathens who don't accept Hylia as their savior.
I have a tip to find your main. Usually their is that one character that you say, ok, that character seems too weird for me to main and you never choose that character [for me at the time this was lucina]. Try that character, I did and it worked.
I guess I *technically* have three mains. I use the three Links because their moveset is fairly similar and most things I learn with one translates to the others. I use one or the other based on matchup. I do favor Toon Link, however.
I have a somewhat similar scenario, I main Lucina, Roy and Corrin, Corrin being considered Link in this example, as Lucina and Roy are very similar in playstyle but Corrin has a slightly different approach, and can completely relate with this though, "because their moveset is fairly similar and most things I learn with one translates to the others. I use one or the other based on matchup." And I personally do best with and favour Lucina the most.
That is one thing that wasn't really touched on in this video: Some characters are similar enough to each other that what you learn as one applies pretty much identically to the other. This is obviously far more extreme for Echo fighters and doesn't apply quite as well to the Links, Doc/Normal Mario, or the space furries, but the principle is still there. If you've never played Falco in your life but are already good at Fox, you'll probably be able to pick up and play Falco almost immediately with few disruptions.
@@darthvaderreviews6926 But then if we do focus on characters who have more significant differences, eg. my scenario(Lucina, Roy, Corrin), it can allow for counter-picking while still being similar enough that learning one can translate to another to at least some degree
When I was 5-6 i allways watched kirby right back at ya and was in love with meta knight,so I started playing with him,I loved him so he was my main.1st month i got smash i kept using just meta knight then I tried out Falco. But meta knight is gonna allways be my main, however this video is very helpfull even if I'm experienced!
To me, my main is the main character from my favorite game. I already have a connection to that character and enjoy playing as them. My main is Ness. AND NO I DO NOT SPAM PK FIRE. Edit: I know this does not sound very strategical, but I like it because I enjoy playing as him and as long as I'm having fun, I'm good. 2nd edit: Wow I've never even gotten over 10 likes.
What I did was look at recent tier lists and pick one character from each tier and play with them until I found who I liked and that thinking made me a GnW/Rosalina main
Thankfully I bought the game mainly for some casual brawling with friends/family either PvP or coop vs AI, not for online or any other competitive modes
Kaja3 XD I used to be extremely good with ness back in brawl but for some reason I’m not as good now. I’m slowly working my way back. I’m an Ike man myself
that's totally me with Link (especially young Link) I also like Sonic, but I still kinda suck at playing him. I main Link since smash 64, he's just mah boi. Young Link in melee, toon in brawl and 4 and young Link in ultimate again.
I've been using Ness since 1999, the way I found him was I saw a Ness CPU use PK Fire on me then used the Side Smash on me and I noticed it was easy for him to get me, and that was the day I found my main! Now, I use 3 mains and yes I do constantly place 4'th - 1'st at my city's locals... - Ness (know everything about him) - Lucas (feels the same in weight, speed, fall speed, and mobility, and he's a semi-clone) - Roy (only pull him out when I fight counter-picks the psykids with Rosalina, Marth, Lucina, Cloud and sometimes Ike or Link) Normally Ness isn't a character to solo main (which I don't) but I like how in Ultimate he has even or slightly losing match ups to the top tiers like... Inkling, Pikachu, Pichu, King K Rool.
If you play smash enough you'll learn what other characters do anyway by fighting a growing variety of fighters. Plus, it doesn't matter if you "know what other characters can do" if you don't know how to deal with it via your main, so it's probably best just to stick with your main. Getting that little jump start by learning what other characters can do will make you better for like the first 100 matches at most, but not even that because you will have spent said matches "learning what other characters can do" making this useless in the long run. If you spend a lot of time on another character you have trouble with, THAT could be beneficial because you're not taking too much time off your main, and you can learn how the character plays and the weaknesses your main can exploit.
I thought having a man was about honor in high school. Kind of picking a character that reflected you in some way. Mine is Mega Man because the way he plays reminds me of a certain Quincy from bleach
Pacman main and little mac or cloud is probably my second best. And for a better guide on how to find a main find a character your somewhat decent with by just doing random for a couple of matches. Once you have your somewhat decent character practice with him and see what it is about that character you like and occasionally try another character you think might be similar to their playstyle and that is how I really narrow down who I'm best with.
I don't actually have Smash. But I really enjoy playing with friends on their own Switch. I consider myself a Joker/Robin main, I've been intrigued by Joker since his release. And his fluid playstyle is a bit more comfortable for me to play with than rather say my original beginner character being Snake. I got into Robin after a week or two of me leeching on other people's switches at school. I know nothing about Fire Emblem. But the fact that your B specials were limited was an interesting concept. Something about the character drew my interest, and I've been learning them alongside Joker since. I haven't played Smash in awhile though. I've regained interest in the game so I might try saving up again.
Why does Nintendo not just make it possible for us to choose "Random" for online? They allow it for online arena but not Quickplay? Isn't it Quickplay because we want to jump right into the Smash game without worrying about any parameters?
Just use a random number gen or something, set it from 1-74 (including echoes and miis) and let that pick randomly for you. It's more work, I know, but it achieves the same purpose.
Quickplay is technically the main element of online, with GSP for your characters and the lead up to elite smash. Battle arena is seen more as servers for fighting with friends or just having fun
Steve Loyalist here: Although I did say I am a Steve Loyalist, I should also mention that even though I chose to be a Steve main when he released because I love Minecraft, being the only game better than Smash in my opinion, I also truly appreciate his playstyle. I know that there are a few loyalists who, despite being "loyalists," they still complain or dislike their character's moveset or matchups. For me, I generally dislike camping, yet steve was designed with the intent of backing off to mine materials. But I don't let that bother me, because whenever I'm really struggling online in a match (and maybe if the opponent is t-bagging), I'll be willing to build wall after wall to get materials and prepare to fight, and when I *am* aggressive, I properly use my knowledge of Steve's amazing juggling and other advantage-state tools to deal damage or take stocks. I'm mainly just trying to show my perspective of choosing steve through liking his source game over his actual traits, which is still true today, but I also adapt to Steve's playstyle, and eventually, it's more comforting to play him than anyone else, even though I have and pretty much always will dislike camping. Also steve's upsmash is the most unique attack ever and I love it
Imagine if you win an EVO and someone asks you how did you know Wario was the correct character to use And then you say ''He looked funny, so I picked him''
Jori the Great As someone who plays Wario, he’s definitely a fantastic character, having some of the most hard-hitting smash attacks in the game. That and the motorbike can be useful when used correctly.
I still think its really boring to play the same character over and over. I main roy/chrom (mostly chrom) and young link but i get really bored playing just them
Play other characters as well! But if you're practicing for a tournament you might just want to stick with just your mains to practice with. Maybe you just haven't found a character you really like? I can play my main for hours and not get bored.
That’s because they are so boring to play. Their moves are so basic and straight forward. Try Peach she’s super technical but it takes a while to play her well since you need to master the float cancels and the golden height float.
Day 1 Ness main. It was a complete shock to see him on the first Smash as a secret character. The satisfaction of winning a match in Ultimate with a bat, can be described in one word. SMAAAAAAAAASH!
I'm gonna start picking Pittoo as my main from now on. Sure, i might take some to get used to his move set, but i wanna make him some justice, because the whole "U ONLY CHOSE DARK PIT CUZ UR EDGY" is really annoying me and just shows the lack of knowlege people have for the game he came from. I have no idea where he places in tier lists (and i don't care, honestly, i hate tier lists), but i wanna do this dark angel some justice because i've never seen anyone pick him... (i am a character loyalist, yes)
I'm going to main dark pit as well for two reasons because I love his character and I want to change the tier list and make him one of the great choices instead of a D tier as he is listed.
When I started ultimate I picked Palutena, kind of at random. I hadn’t played much since melee and was never that great then, which hadnt changed. I was in the goddamn trenches on quickplay for ages and slowly got better through learning the matchups, improving my neutral game, and watching videos of pros play to get ideas. Am proud to say I went from a crap player to almost in elite smash now! Made me feel accomplished! I love Corrin, Roy, and Rosalina too (fun to KO people with a sentient floating star) and DeDeDe (I had a crush on DeDeDe when I was 12 and played kirby’s dreamland..yes I had a crush on a fat penguin villain with a hammer, wtf was wrong with me) and though I’m not super great with any of them I never had to ‘grind’ with them like I did Palu. She’s the character I truly learned with and will always be a Palu main as long as she’s in the game! I just found your channel recently and love your vids, keep up the good work!
K. Rool is my main. Dedede, Ganon, and DK are my secondaries. Heavies are just so fun to play as (i don't even care about their weaknesses, i just like to do insanely high amounts of damage in battles).
Cerebral Smash have you looked at Richter? He’s basically a jojo character... though I’m afraid it’s likely gonna be fighter 69 if you want to play like you’re star platinum
I kind of feel that way too. I found a main but after spending about at least 30-60 minutes with my main I experiment with other characters to see who could possibly be a secondary, which means you play with lots of characters and it's fun while not regressing your knowledge so maybe try that. Hopefully you can find a main
How to find main. 1. Have party 2. Make everyone pick random 3. Find someone you like 4. Play some matches with them (Repeat steps 2-4 until end of party) 5. Play online matches with the characters you liked 6. Choose a main
I saw inkling and was like ”Eh, they look cool” so I played as them, and I really liked their character, their costumes, and I also liked all the combos you could do with them, I even got an inkling amiibo and Splatoon 2 and DLC
I use Fox in Ultimate because of his mobility, which eventually led me to discover shield-grabbing, which is self-explanatory, but I'll explain it anyway. Shield-grabbing starts with you quickly moving near your opponent, while dodging ranged attacks, then tap the shield button, which should protect you from an attack, then press shield again to grab the opponent, and beat them up, then repeat everything again.
ObjectManiacLewis 27 I encountered a Fox who did that online, and he took 1stock from me, but since I main young Link, I figured out his strategy and Used clawshot on his shield. He still ended up winning, but hopefully he’ll be more careful and use more strategies to keep one from getting stale. Overall though it is a really good strategy .
After months, I made a list of characters I could main. I ended up picking dark pit because I played against my cousin, who mains no body and the only time I beat him was when I used dark pit. I will be teaching my mother how to play smash and help her pick a main and until she picks one I will not use my main because she is terrible
