Another great video. Would really love to see you make a proper narrative short. I think a lot of us would be interested in that. Maybe also a companion video/series of bts from the short as well. Great work as always!
Quality content as always! Would love to see a horror/Halloween themed cinematography video as we get closer to October. Mike Flanagan's work always has some great cinematography to go along with it.
Thank you so much, glad you're enjoying my channel! I hadn't had anything themed planned, but it's possible I could convert one of my planned videos into more of a horror style... yeah I'll do it! ;)
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with your audience, there should be more channels like yours, you have been a great help to my process of understanding and improving my lighting schemes. thank you very much for your videos.
You never failed to provide us with so much good one-man to production lighting information & setups, Rob! I look forward to emulate your techniques and create this in my DP startup works. Hopefully i can afford a 720B hehe. Cheers!
I appreciate the kind words and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! 😄 it's a little pricey but I think it'll be a very long lasting tool in anyone's lighting kit!
Rob, more than a great filmmaker, you are an outstanding Magician!! Thanks for sharing your "Behind the curtain" tricks!!! I really appreciate them. Cheers!!
@@RobEllisCinematographer I've thought you had an Austin Butler look about you since I saw One Upon A Time In Hollywood 🤣 I use your lighting techniques all the time man, thanks for blessing us with such simple breakdowns of complex lighting!
Thank you so much Flavio, super happy you're enjoying the extended videos!! Glad you liked the night scene! 🌙 don't forget my hilarious running and spraying 🤣
Watching this video, and his narration, and wondering why the uk or england> Feels like such a slower pace than USA... and I tripping... ? Thats a compliment but why is it...
@@RobEllisCinematographer I like book lighting with my 300B but if there's a window present I can never get the levels high enough. Do you get to keep your light after the review?
I do love Godox but damn the Aputure with Sidus link app is next level shit. Tho Forza is probably 2nd favourite. Just got Amaran 200x for overhead, cant wait to test it.
@@RobEllisCinematographer Indeedy, now just waiting on my Junior Boom, its been 6 weeks and should come within the next few days. Strange that there is also a grip shortage RIP
Although I understand the technical benefits of powerfull light, is it practical for actors eyesight? Aren't actors blinded by such powerful light aimed at their eyes? Do they force themself not to squint? It looks for me that it can influence actors work, that actors need more time for between takes for their eyes to rest.
Are there any better or cheaper alternatives out there now. I know 8 months aren't a lot, but in the COB LED world, it can make a difference. How would you rate the Nanlite ecosystem vs the aputure or Godox? I know the Aputure Sidus Link app is supposed to be fantastic, and once you pay for a light like this I think it would be beneficial to stay in the same ecosystem.
Man this was great I really appreciate you doing these such a great wealth of knowledge. Thank you!! Can you please tell me what color temp you have your camera set too. Even though your probably shooting in raw I’d be interested what your camera settings are for each shot. Thanks bro
Rob, question for you. For someone starting out in filmmaking, I am gathering some nice gear already (Lumix S5, BM Video Assist 12G) but I am lacking in the lighting department. I plan to start doing a lot of outdoor shoots with a single subject / actor, in the early evening at dusk. The Forza 720B would be amazing, but at $1850 it's a tad pricey. Would a Forza 300 be good? Anything in between?
I think generally the only way you'll be able to figure out what you need, is getting what you can afford and seeing how it works for you - then once you know what you can and can't do you can upgrade later down the line! The 300 would definitely be great for a variety of lighting scenarios at dusk, as it will be bright enough for a few scenarios if the ambient is dark enough - you might not be lighting larger areas, but if you're a little more deliberate with your compositions and framing (not too wide, shoot in a smaller space without too much deep background, etc) you could certainly create a sunset for example.
@@RobEllisCinematographer Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I decided to get the Forza 500 with the fresnel lens. Your videos have really inspired me to experiment with filmmaking. your videos are also good at emptying my wallet! 😂
I have a question about powerfull lights. Because I wanna search for my best combi light like price rgb combination. what strong enough to shoot like through the wood. Like you said 500 full blast is enough. What is saw. Do you think 300w is enough? I saw gvm sd300c. (For my budget) For small places yes but is it enough in woods for wider shoots.
Quick Question: Is there a reason to buy for example a Forza 300b Nanlite compared to a Nanite forza 720b if you have the budget? Seems to pointless to go with the weaker one if you can afford such a beast, or am I missing something?
So you don't always need that much power - the 300B is still plenty of light and if you're mainly shooting in situations where you're not trying to balance against too much bright ambient you have more than enough flexibility. Something like the 720B opens that flexibility out so if you do need more power, you've got it! Other considerations could be travel and portability - the 720B is bigger and heavier to transport so it might not necessarily be ideal in some situations where a lighter travel load is needed. In a multiple light setup you might need to use a more powerful light like the 720B to shoot through a window for sunlight, yet still need a key or fill in the room, so something like the 300B could be adequate for this - I would recommend having a bunch of different strength outputs for when you need them overall, although I know these things can add up!!
