I love time in the desert and in the mountains. The Inyo Mountains, Death Valley, and the Sierras are among the most awe producing places in the entire world. It's something I was definitely missing in my life before my time here. It's something I actively seek out as often as I can these days.

5 years ago, my son was transferred to Yuma AZ. The next late fall, early winter, my wife and I visited his family for 7 weeks. I was never so sad to leave an area in my life. I totally fell in love with the desert that trip. He's retired now and stayed in the area. I yearn to visit them. It is oh so beautiful there.

Brent you have become one of my favorite people to listen to. You have a gift for describing the landscape around you in a way that can be felt wherever the listener resides. It’s therapeutic and inspirational. I’m hoping one day, when your life slows a bit, you will find the time to put pen to paper or finger to keyboard and write a book or two.

When I started watching the first channel last year, it was because a friend and I were writing ghost hunting fanfiction and in my RU-vid rabbit hole, I discovered Ghost Town Living. I was born in Lonepine, California and raised, until seven, in Ridgecrest, California. That dry, empty and seemingly desolate desert is within me even though I'm not a frequent visitor I love it like no other. So many memories from my youth are in the desert. Our family moved to southern Utah (Cedar City) in 1970. Now I live in Ft Collins, Colorado and I find this area just as captivating. Mountain meadows and clear, cold running streams give me great comfort. I miss the desert. It's like home calling me to return. Isn't it awesome how, as humans, we can appreciate life if we only slow down and allow that wonder and awe in? Thank you for your comments here and thank you also for being part of my experience. Always, Andy

Brent, every scene and every word was chosen incredibly well and the Alabama Hills that you pass through on the way to Whitney Portal have no equal. You then shifted east to rise past the Cerro Gordo high desert and down into the valleys that drop lower and lower, past rain shadow creating mountain ranges, until Death Valley is reached.

To me the awe is the realization of how small and insignificant I am in the grand scheme of things. I used to do commercial fishing in Iceland and standing outside on the deck and seeing nothing but water in all directions as far as the eyes could see really gave me that feeling.

When it is warm, my mother and I go paddle boarding on Lake Washington near Seward Park. For those who don’t know, Seward park is a peninsula in Lake Washington and it is famous for old growth trees. Even with roads and small spots for picnics it remains a heavily forested area. When my mother and I paddle board around this beautiful area, we are constantly in awe of the large trees, Mount Rainer in the background, and the occasional small historic cabins that we pass. I am grateful for the area I grew up in as I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of it

ive always been glad i grew up in the desert; my dad and i used to pile into his truck and drive as far up the mountains as we could go, and take pictures of the views from so high up with crappy old cameras. i remember being able to go outside in my small little hometown and look up and see the stars without issue; when i was little, we only had one car, so my mom would drive my dad to work at a mine an hour away at 3am each morning, and i could lay in the back seat and stare out the window to look at the stars and the outline of the sky against the mountains as much as i could. i miss it a lot. my most recent memories of that place are just of smoke and a red sun, now.

I love the desert, I often think of going back to death valley in the middle of the summer. Being lost in the hottest place on the planet, miles upon miles of a dry salt flat where the heat makes an ocean of fire. Every breath you take your lungs are set on fire and the sun so bright it makes the floor look like led lights reflecting off the sand dunes in the distance. Running on the fine grained powdered sand to only hear the wind blow in the nothing mass of beauty. It's only you and your thoughts, it's so gorgeous I often go back in time to relive those moments venturing across the south west. The deserts are a magical place that should always be cherished and taken care of.

I know this was posted a couple of months ago. But I just watched it again. I grew up in the north end of LA. But have been venturing out to the desert and up into the mountains all of my life. I love them both. It's cool to see someone else viewing things as I always have. I love the vast vistas. Not like being out in the plains. That's a different sort of environment. There, you see great distances...to openness. In the deserts I'm familiar with, you can see great distances too. But there are always mountains. And not hills like eastern mountains. REAL mountains. Things are SO majestic and yes, so AWESOME! Great video.

@@DrBlues90 i see. as a californian, there is lots to see. one thing i would suggest is to avoid the big cities or at least dont stay there too long! also dont come here during summer, certain places get extremely hot during summer especially death valley close to cerro gordo. best time to come here is maybe late spring time(april-may) or fall(october-november). certain national/state parks will be closed for winter due to snow so i dont recommend winter season. best of luck.

@@oldblood_eyes Thank you for the tips. I was thinking of going in May 2022. Provisional route of San Francisco - Yosemite - Sequoia - Cerro Gordo - LA then back up Big Sur to San Francisco. Not sure if Cerro Gordo will be open to visitors however.
@oldblood_eyes
@oldblood_eyes 2 года назад
@@DrBlues90 that's perfect! if you want more nature, then when you're at San Francisco, you can go north a bit and see the Redwoods(coastal cousins of the Sequoia trees). highway 1 is scenic as well. next time you come to cali, you can take another trip where you can see more of the cali desert. like start at San Diego, head to Joshua Tree, drive up to Mojave, head to Death Valley(here u can go into Las Vegas as well) and then go west into Lone Pine for that small town california life. it's on this path here where you can get to Keeler and get on the path for Cerro Gordo ghost town! even if Cerro Gordo isnt open for business, Brent has said you can always message him and ask for permission to just stop by and see the town yourself. After getting to Lone Pine, you can go up to Bishop and stop at Lake Tahoe/Reno. by the way, through Lone Pine and Bishop, there is many nature spots to go there! for example alabama hills in lone pine and mammoth lakes near Bishop!!

Thank you Brent for expressing the truth about nature and enjoying life. My first exposure to a ghost town came in the summer of 1977, when my grandfather took me up to Treasure City, Nevada and we spent a week or so metal detecting the ghost town in the mountainous desert. I still have some amazing memories of sights, sounds, smells of being in the high desert. I now live in the high desert of southeast Arizona near Tombstone, AZ and each day is something new....a sunrise, a sunset, a coyote, a roadrunner, an antelope, the mountains, the desert....keep up the good work with your vlogs.

I live in the high desert on the foothills of the rockies. 30 Miles from the Utah Border. It is truly beautiful. I have the mountains less than an hour away and the beautiful high desert in my backyard. But with that beauty comes a healthy respect. In the summer this place will kill you without thinking twice. You need a liter of water an hour if you want to do it right. It sucks the moisture right out of your body. I typically only hike and explore the desert during the winter. It's great. I decent flannel is all you need if the sun is out and the wind is down. It's the best time to go nuts and not worry about turning into a raisin or getting serious burns.

Dear Brent, Thank you very much for sharing this video and your deeper thoughts about life where you are with me. Like others, I find your work satisfying and your adventures a ton of fun! I feel a certain possessiveness when you show me what's around you like the mountains and the wonder that you carry with you now. My parents (who're still with us,) brought up about half of us kids in this region. Mom says, "once the dessert gets in your blood, it's always there." She's right! That sense of awe hits me often in large and small ways. From tiny ants to mountain ranges that slowly disappear into the horizon I feel deeply that my surroundings are incredible. I'm currently living in Ft Collins, Colorado and the Rockies are very close and the great plains are within view (if you can get a hundred feet higher and just look it's like being on the edge of creation itself.) Forested mountains are in my blood, just like the nothingness of desert life. So much to feast upon with my eyes and mind. Bless you for allowing the beauty of your environment to touch your heart and fill it with things that give you meaning and purpose. You've truly found the greatest treasure of all. Always, Andy

i been glued to your other channel and didn't know of this one till now. i know, where have i been? but i have to say, i am as ever pretty well dazed every time when i listen to you Brent, your words give so much more to your surroundings, sure i live in a small coastal town and i like many have a tv which enables me to see so much of the world we live in, and again i do the same with my trusty laptop, get on you tube and escape to other worlds getting to be one with nature is something i truly respect, and i like you will stop and look at my surroundings with some ore, twice a week i escape into the countryside where i do a little work, and sometimes find myself leaning over the fence chatting with a cow, or sometimes a bull, who comes over for a chat, its fun, its enjoyable to think we understand each other but my scenery is nothing like yours, certainly not as breath taking as yours, but i guess that's why i am here with others to enjoy it with you, sharing that feeling and the knowledge of its and your existence, cool
