I used to tell some of my friends that you don’t really have to go head to toe designer. And this video is exactly what I meant. Even just 1 designer classic handbag can really make an outfit a statement.
Yup! I wear a lot of affordable clothes but it’s all about quality and craftsmanship. In my 20s I splurged on Burberry trench coats, Max Mara wool coats, YSL Chanel Prada purses, etc. Guess what? I gained weight and could no longer fit into my designer clothes. And I got sick of 2 of my purses and I totally thought I was making smart choices (aka nothing too trendy but not necessarily a classic). The resale value wasn’t great for these items. Now I opt for cashmere from Uniqlo, Zara, H&M (when they have it online), J.crew, and Cos. And get my shoes from the designer section at Nordstrom Rack or The RealReal (if you don’t mind used shoes). And I focus on less expensive bags like Furla, Cuyana, APC, etc. I still have several designer items: Gucci wool scarf, LV silk scarf, Chanel purse (my 1st luxury item, I’ll never sell it), Ferragamo pumps, Cartier bracelet, etc. It’s nice to have a few luxury pieces, but my wallet appreciates me spending less but still getting nice things. And lately I’m trying to support smaller brands and indie designers. Edit to add: I never pay full price if I don’t have to. Cashmere sweaters are basically half off after the holidays. And some luxury brands appear on discount like Saks Off 5th, etc. I mean, Sophie is always talking about online discounts. :) And if you don’t mind vintage or secondhand, it’s definitely cheaper.
@@SL-lz9jr totally agree with you. Merino Wool sweaters and Cashmere yes they’re on sale like right now. I bought my husband some from Zara and GAP Merino Wool $17 and Cashmere $19. Coach handbags I swear on their quality even if you buy them from the outlet store. You can score a 100% leather handbag or wallet 70% off plus extra 15% off.
I feel the same way, love designer, but not really into huge logos plaster on the products, I would rather have something of outstanding quality and not "show". I think it looks more classic and upper class to keep the labels on the inside and let the product speaks for itself in looks, wearability, and durability.
I love Chloe but I personally find that the leather on their bags wear pretty horribly, also not always super functional for every occasion since a lot of their bags are small circular shapes
What I am seeing is that most people do not have their own style. They follow trends instead of figuring out their personal style and building a wardrobe around that.
I'm glad someone notices the difference. I'm in fashion and that is the topic I explain to people the most. Helping them find their style is one of the first things.
When I was going out in the world everyday my personal style would change from day to day depending on where I was going and my mood. But I was not necessarily following trends
If you ever come across a brand of shoes called "Nero Giardini" you should definitely give them a try. Their prices are 150-300 €, it's always Italian leather and classic wearable designs. Your feet will thank you and will not want to buy any other brand after you've tried them. I don't know what kind of Italian magic is in those shoes but they are sturdy, comfortable and extremely beautiful and elegant.
I want to suggest LV reversible belt, I bought it for 400 eur last year. From one side it is black and from other side it is brown with LV logos. You get 2 belts for one price:)
Hi, This might help you. For everyday wear, what I did many years ago, was try things on in my wardrobe and if I felt super comfortable in the style or the color I put those clothes aside and tried to buy things from then on that ai felt super comfortable in. I don’t mean comfortable as in lounge wear. I mean that I didn’t feel any tension with. Then I looked at things, good things. 5hat I avoided wearing and I tried to decide what it was that I didn’t like. When I realized I didn’t like ornate things I stopped buying them. Lastly was my attention to color. I realized I do t like much color, I love black, beige, cream, white.......pale pastels in summer
Right? But I truly wish that it’s not going to be the next Gucci-trend where everyone is running around with a fake version, making you look like you’ve a fake one too
Hi Sophie, maybe made it first again!!!! Hope you, David and the buns are all ok during this latest lockdown. So pleased you liked your gift. Stay safe. Hugs xxxx
A few years back I was living in London and at that time I didn’t have much of stuff. But I decided to pick up a ballerina shoes from Chanel. Absolutely worth investing in. Since then I just keep buying them. They are so practical and classy. 💯 recommend
As someone with enormous feet, it's not even "looking cheap" that I'm afraid of with my shoes--it's more, is there even my size?! Will the plastic soles not just roll off after 2 years? Can I walk from 10am - 9pm in these? I have some YSL heels and Jimmy Choos that are 12 years old, and I haven't even resoled them! And they've carried me across gravel, wet concrete, and away from bad relationships looking fly.
@@AndariReksi I clean them after I use them (for one); make sure they don't get drenched (in the rain, in puddles) and not stored in humidity. There's also (depending on shoe type) protectant spray.
I love watching these videos because I feel a lot of RU-vidrs and Instagramers make you feel pressured to buy all this stuff to keep up with trends. Your videos give a more realistic view to luxury or great advice for buying quality items.
The goal should be look elegant, classy and well put together. Looking expensive shouldn’t be the goal. If you can afford nice stuff is great!! But if you cant choose wisely your clothes and shoes.
Hi, I agree I have expensive designer items that I pair with non designer items. As long as the quality is good I don't mind if there is a designer label stuck on the clothing.
This video comes at a perfect time for me. I’ve been seriously considering culling my wardrobe down to key pieces that reflect my true style, but, also will reflect a timeless style, focuses on natural fibers, fits my body type well, and is easily manageable. I just have too much of a hodgepodge now. Your video offers great suggestions. Always love your vids, TFS!
Ahh me too! I have clothes that I started clearing-out over Christmas; sort of "fast fashion" items that look a bit worn having been washed and used so much. Once I removed them from my wardrobe it was great to see what I really have to work with. Getting more wear out of my items now. Thank you so much for watching my friend, hugs!xx
I love how realistic and honest you are if I'm going to be spending this amount of money I want to know what is the best value for money. Also always here for longevity over trneds I buy things to make me happy not fit in!
Given that we’re in lockdown and likely to remain at home for a long time I’ve put designer purchases on the back burner but this is definitely great advise
My weak spot is Marni and it’s always been. Saved up and ended up buying their Trunk bag a little while ago. I was afraid I’d regret spending that amount if money but because it has been a goal and dream of mine for so many years, I still smile every day when I wear it!
I never knew you had bunnies! I have 2 house bunnies and they are amazing!! You are so down to earth and genuine, it’s a breath of fresh air on RU-vid nowadays. So glad I found your channel!
It’s super refreshing seeing someone talk about a £6K chanel coat or a Balmain blazer and then be gushing over a handmade gift from a subscriber. I think it just really shows what a sweet, kind and down to earth person you are. Keep making amazing videos and I hope you have a wonderful 2021 💕
Sophie you've inspired my love for intelligent, well thought out fashion. For a couple of years now I've adopted the work wardrobe strategy of buying 5 tops (Lily Dilk blouses and cotton button up shirts) and 5 pairs of quality high street trousers (Reiss) that I wear for work during the week that I'll mix and match, plus a mid range 100% leather work bag. Men tend to wear the same or similar coloured suits with different shirts and I thought I'd try the same. Such a time and money saver! This has allowed me spend money on luxuries like holidays, classic handbags, 18 carat gold heirloom jewellery pieces and staple designer shoes. Also the odd designer piece of clothing on the outnet like a 70% off Stella McCartney wool coat.
Thank you for talking about luxury capsule collections! Being mindful of my spending and how much stuff I accumulate, I’ve always taken a capsule approach to luxury goods and think it’s probably the most reasonable way for most people who love luxury to curate a modest and timeless collection :)
This is so refreshing to hear from someone who has the most stunning collection. I think a lot of people see the titles of your thumbnails and incorrectly and think you just buy whatever you want with no thought whatsoever and have you down as snobby perhaps but you’re not at all! You’re a genuinely kind and very smart person that’s worked hard to have lots of nice things. This video definitely caught my attention as I myself am trying to build a capsule wardrobe. I bought my Alma BB in the damier ebene almost two years ago and I love it just as much as I did back then. It’s perfect as I don’t have to be precious about it due to its durability and it goes with every single outfit. I’m now on the hunt for a belt, I think I will go for one from dior but want to buy in person when the shops are open. Just wanted to say that I think you’re great and despite you living a very different lifestyle to me I still find you so relatable and personable unlike other, even bigger youtubers in your industry x
That is lovely feedback, thank you my friend! I think with this genre on YT it absolutely comes across as shallow..... and it kinda is 😂 But it can also be fun 😊 I’m just a regular person at the end of the day, I just like making videos, but I’m very down to Earth in real life, and I hope you all can come here and just feel chilled ☺️ Hugs to you xxx😘😘
Agreed! Thank you for being so reasonable and practical. I'm not into designer clothes to have a designer and don't like grabbing anything that has a name splashed across it. But if it's used and made well with good fabric, particularly natural fibers, I'll pick up a designer piece if it fits my style and I can wear it with many different outfits. Also, getting clothes altered to fit can source up your clothes and make them look way more expensive! Classy and and developing taste isn't just about large sums of money!
A good tailor is a great help in saving money by buying classic non designer clothing (especially jackets and coats) and having it altered to fit better. As well as quality fabric, in fact, I think, even more than that, many designer jackets - Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham are good eggs - are that little bit more tailors in sleeves and waists, than high street.
i LOVED this!! eventually i want to work hard enough to buy whatever i want. But, as a 21 yr old beginner stylist, (and my style being classic and minimal, monochromatic) building a capsule wardrobe w timeless designer pieces and good quality clothing is a SMART option!! sure designer clothes is beautiful but i believe u can still achieve ur own personal style w/o spending so much. Great video! well done👏🏼
Excellent points Sophie. Quality items tend to age much better than fast fashion pieces, they last longer and look better for a longer time. Always enjoy your videos!
This was some really good advice. I’m trying to create a more timeless wardrobe filled with good quality items that I love rather than a whole bunch of fast fashion( which is more expensive in the long run when you think about). I’m definitely more of a person that would go for a luxury item that is quite discreet ( no large logos) and non designer items that are well made, as I’d rather the durability, craftsmanship and quality speak for itself😊
Being an influencer doesn’t mean opening boxes and boxes of stuff or advertising every cream on the market as the best cream they have ever used. Sophie is truly what an influencer should be. I don’t comment much but watch for all the tips and tricks because Sophie is not trying to sell us anything. This is how it should be done. Well done Sophie, you are a star in my eyes. ❤️
Oh wow, this is the nicest feedback 🙏🏽 and actually, all feedback (positive and critical) is great as I find making the videos so fun, but I want them to be something you all enjoy too ☺️ Very much appreciate you and all of my other viewers being here, such a nice community! Hugs to you xx😘😘
Perfect! I need this. Thank you, I am a minimalist. Can you also do luxury bags for each season or occasion? Like summer bag, shopping, hiking, travel and so on.
Soo happy to see this video! We’re in a culture promoting designer everything and multiples! I personally believe (and no offence to anyone else) that good quality outfits with the odd statement piece looks far more elegant than head to toe in loud labels. Loved this thank you for sharing :)
Omg I love the boxed frame piece Jill’s daughter made! It is so freaking adorable! It made me smile! Too cute! I love the 30 Montaigne Dior belt you got for Christmas. I have one as well and it just works so well with most outfits!
At my age yes yes yes to long lasting timeless pieces !! Quality is what I am looking for. No more need to impress the ‘Joneses’ ... money is definitely an object for me now ... so I have to make careful choices...
when it comes to shoes custom leather is the way to go! Once you find a good shoemaker they will last you for decades (also you can get them repaird seamlessly and you can design them yourselfe) and will be so comfortable no matter how high the heel is. This way you are supporting small local businesses/craftsmen as well. You are likely to pay less than designer shoes and get a better fit for your foot!
I got shoes in Italy from a shoemaker and they were horrible. I paid a lot, wore maybe twice (painfully), and then maybe sold for like $20. I like designer shoes from now on. They have a pretty good resale value if they don’t work out. They usually do work out.
I am saving for one i do think it's a good investment when you treat it gentle. But everyone is different what i do is i actually try to safe double the money of the chanel bag so i always have a backup If you can't afford to save for a bag just don't do it. This pandemic proofs that bills are more important than saving for a bag 🤗🤗 staf safe everyone
I have the saddle bag in the matte leather and I regret it so much! It’s so delicate, every scratch shows up. Keep the bag material in mind as well bc if you’re not a careful person, then you’re going to want a bag made from sturdy material
The only designer items I can justify buying for myself (and saving for!) are bags. The rest I can easily find good quality of on the high street l and I love that. Love finding new items from small brands
My grandmother always looked at the inside of clothing.....seam allowance/stitching etc. Great brands which are a tad (!!!!) cheaper.Ferragammo,Max Mara and all the associated brands like weekend.🖤🖤
I’m SO glad that you like it here as a place to sort of chill out 🙏🏽🙌🏽😊 it’s exactly how I feel about it and I want everyone to be able to come here, and feel relaxed. Everyone in the comments are all so nice too, I’ve seen loads of my regulars helping others out with things they might be going through. Or even advice on ‘should I buy this item’, it’s so nice to see! Anyway, you have a great Sunday my friend xx😘😘
@@SophieShohetOfficial it definitely is a place to chill out indeed! Your videos are one of the only ones I just let play and don’t skip through anything, because I find the so relaxing and like how you get straight to the point 🥰 the community you have created on here is a real testament to you xx
I bought a trendy last year and put a twilly on it. It’s a lovely bag... looks classic but not as popular as the classic flap. It seems nearly everyone has the classic flap these days!
Good shoes has always been my biggest thing for me and admittedly, I have bought some top designer shoes. I just find that shoes or boots make the outfit - and good quality footwear does last if well looked after. Thanks for yet another great video - always a highlight
Hi Sophie, lovely video as usual! I flinched when you put your powder brush straight into your bag. Please use a retractable powder brush when you have to put a brush straight into your bag. Especially when you are not carrying a makeup bag. I have two retractable powder brush and they are really cute, and come in handy when I carry smaller bags.
Hi Sophie, I love your new attitude. I adore the fact that you are mixing pre-loved with new and you are so much more relaxed about the whole luxury thing. Keep going!!
Hello Sophie! I said it before, I'll repeat myself, I absolutely love when you are opening letters. Your reaction to all of it always makes me smile 🌞. I also love to see the cute and interesting things you receive from all these lovely people. In this video, I was at awe with the elaborated design of the 3D card 😍 and that bunny 🐰 did I hear it right, it's a mini wind chime? Adorable!
I ordered the Balmain dupe. It arrived today, so fast! It’s lovely. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. I’m starting over my wardrobe after a lot of weight loss. I’d love to see more capsule wardrobe videos although I love them all 😀
Hi Sophie, love watching you. Even though I don't comment as much as my mum! She is always first in line! (Jill) So glad you like the bunnies. We have 2 house bunnies same colours as yours ❤️ I only ever have one handbag at a time and I use it everyday until its worn out. Happy new year to you, hubby and bunnies x
Yes!! What a fantastic video!! Right now my financial priorities mean luxury purchases are on the back burner, but your advice is GREAT for making more mindful purchases, regardless of one’s budget. Also, your mail time is the best!! ❤️
Bonjour Sophie, I really appreciate this content, it’s come at the best time as I’m looking at my wardrobe (always do a big cleanup in Jan) and contemplating what I need this year. I’ve always been a classic but somehow over the last years I’ve wandered and spent far to much on fast fashion... that’s the thing with this style... your happy in the moment but then tire of it and move on to the next best thing (well it is for me) I’m going back to what I really like. Thank you so much Sophie, you’ve inspired me today xoxo
concerning non designer brands or even fast fashion, I would advise paying attention to the 4 F’s: fabric, fitting, finishing and fine print/pattern. And with designer brands, to not mix different logos from different brands (a huge faux pas here in São Paulo)
I’ve held off buying new clothes since I gutted my wardrobe, now I’ve got ideas of what to replace everything with 😂 I’ve always loved that Stella coat just never bit the bullet and brought it! I might now though 😍 thanks Sophie x
Sophie I totally agree with you... I have a Gucci belt and Versace Medusa belt, and I think they really punch up my non-designer outfits like AllSaints or TopMan... for men’s non designer leather shoes, I *love* TOO BOOT NEW YORK. I love them so much I even had a pair resoled 😂 But for Christmas I did get the Jordaan Gucci loafers, and although I admit I’m a few years behind that trend, the quality is so high that I know I will love them for years to come, and the style feels so classic I don’t think they’ll be as trendy as my belt. Anyway, love you and appreciate you! 🥰💕
I like the 30 Montaigne belt so much more than the saddle belt. The font for the saddle is not special at all, but 30 Montaigne shape makes it look so classy, not just looking like a letter logo. Personally I think 30 Montaigne is here to stay.
A cool capsule wardrobe hack is the Chanel basic belt and Hermes belt leathers are interchangeable - you can buy a Chanel in silver hardware with a reversible black and white leather and purchase a Hermes Constance 32mm with gold hardware and maybe etoupe and blue combo and there you will have essentially 8 potential belt combinations in both silver and gold hardware from 2 luxury houses :-)
I enjoyed this video. I agree with your perspectives on buying luxury. You not only provide great styling advice, you also provide practical advice that can help any woman who desires to build a quality wardrobe without spending a fortune. What I like most about you is your humility. You’re not snobbish about fashion and you’re relatable. You’re providing great content for a woman of any background. Really appreciate you. Keep up the great work.
I prefer your Christmas Dior belt buckle, it may be new and not be around forever, but the design is perfect! Symmetrical and subtle, I just wish they did larger sizes like Gucci do. OMG the pebble bunnies are so adorable! Very creative, and such a thoughtful gift! 🐰🐰
This is a nice video! Sophie, can you make a separate content that talks about the quality and how to care your bags and clothes? Like, how do you keep them in top shape and avoid scratches/dirt, how do you store them (fold, hang, or in a box?), etc. There was one video long time ago where you mention about the leather quality of a bag and it was *so interesting to me* because in a million years I wouldn't have paid any attention to the leather on the bottom of my bag (I'm the type who uses things I have until it broke). I thought you'd be the right person to ask about such things, I hope you don't mind :)
I bought a pink large trendy - it’s a lovely bag, very roomy, looks classic without being the over popular classic flap and I love the gold metal ‘Chanel’ on the top of it. I’d recommend for sure but as with all Chanel... it’s bloody expensive
I’m going to say decent leather heels I use LK Bennett. Oldest pair I own still going strong are now 8-9 years old. Also have to say knowing you spend time to read and reply just shows how lovely and real you are ❤️ I feel so bad I’ve fallen behind on my replies to pen friends
Absolutely agree, you don’t need many items to look expensive! But I actually prefer the new Dior logo belt as it’s more subtle, almost looks like an infinity sign. 😊 On shoes, while I looove Gianvito Rossi, I rarely buy them because shoes get so easily scuffed. My go-to brand for shoes is Sam Edelman.
Love this video!! I have to admit that I do am guilty for amassing a huge amount of fashion items but this video really helps me to think about what the best items in my wardrobe are!! Love your videos! I am following you since the Balmain Blazer video and I love watching you ever since! I am also soo happy how much your channel grew since that because you truly are one of the most genuine people on youtube!! Lots of love!!
Really love your vlogs - so grateful that you share your true thoughts. I’ve just purchased my first luxury handbag and I’ve got to be honest, I shat myself!! 😂🤭 really appreciate this, thank you always 🤍🤍🤍
I learned one brand policy from my mum. She’s an LV girl and 90% of her luxury stuff is from there. She always told me that it’s way easier to combine as she hates clashing logos and the styles go together better. I always thought I would be into Dior as I really like their stuff, but I ended up with 90%LV too 😅
@@SoAnesu you totally can! It’s more about the final look than the real convenience. I just don’t like the look of big logo mix. Of course i sometimes mix them together, but then its mostly stuff with no big logos, or only one logo/print thing. Like if I have LV monogram shoes, I wouldn’t pair it with gucci print bag or a marmont which has big GG letters. Its my personal preference, I am not hating on anyone who likes the combos 😅
You are so spot on with everything- it's good to buy good quality shaples with good materials 👌 and the classic accessories can elevate an outfit you've purchased from zara for instance - sound advice as always 💖💖💖
I know Sophie replied already but I sell luxury clothing on eBay for clients and a lot of that depends on the individual and how they wear things. Some of my friends absolutely just bang up everything they own (I never let them borrow anything too precious). They just throw their coats and bags and shoes and don’t seem to care what happens. I on the other hand am more careful. I try not to rub up against another person. I rarely lean against surfaces: walls or doors. I sit where it looks clean. I’m careful not to wear purses that will rub up against the cloth of my sweaters or coats and have it result in pills or stains. I don’t baby my clothes. I do wear them. They are clothes after all. I will say that cheaper quality items do just wear down faster than higher quality items. And expensive does not equal high quality. Some materials just don’t wear well with time. There’s good and bad wool or cashmere. How it’s woven or knitted matters. Generally anything of substance should be fine. It’s the thinner and less weighty fibers that you have to worry about. Long story short, it you’re not the clumsy sort who isn’t paying attention to their surroundings, your luxury pieces should be fine. I’ve had my Max Mara wool coat for years now and I only dry clean it every few months. And it’s only lately starting to pill from where I mistakenly carried a canvas tote bag (when the fibers rub against one another the tension creates pills). Watch out for dark suede purses against light colored wool, there will be color transfer. Smooth leather bags are best. No color transfer or rubbing of the fibers on the coat. :)
Perfect timing! Thanks so much Sophie, I am currently in the process to build a capsule wardrobe with basic luxury pieces that I can combine to make multiple outfits.
Thanks Sophie, just placed an order for the jacket, looks so good on you that when I initially saw the video I thought oh she has two Balmain blazers! I have been looking for a dupe for ages and I know you do not advertise gifted items unless it is of good quality 🤗. Looking forward to it!!! 🥰
Another awesome video, Sophie! Great content! I agree with everything you said. I have quite a few pairs of Valentino shoes. I find their shoes are very classic and timeless. I tend to buy pieces that are classic and stay away from trendy pieces as you stated. It’s funny you held up your leather Chanel ballerina flats. I’m currently heading to buy a pair this upcoming Thursday when I’m off! They’ll go great with blazers, nice, fitted jeans, and paired with my classic Chanel flap. Anyway, Happy New Year! Hope 2021 is awesome and prosperous for you!
Actually fun fact about the Gucci Marmont double G design, it was first released in the 70s for a very limited run, and Alessandro Michele brought it back for the 2016 yeah as an ode to Gucci’s past and reinventing the brand! So it is definetly a classic style, whether it comes in and out of production or not!
Fantastic video as usual. Great tips for the capsule wardrobe! Love watching you open mail, seeing your joy at the heartfelt and thoughtful gifts is so sweet and heartwarming.
I also love the Trendy cc. I think it's absolutely classic and beautiful! And omg the boxed frame of louis and jessica is so freaking adorable and sweet. Such a thoughtful gift 🥰 🥰 Thank you Sophie for the tips and fingers crossed I hope to get the Trendy cc one day 😍
I love this particular episode so much. Just this week I started my 2021 plan for a luxury capsule. Brilliant timing! Thank you so much for taking the time to post on RU-vid, I’ve learned so much from you.
Oh my gosh I can watch your mailtimes forever, there is something so relaxing about them and I find myself commenting out loud how cute all the gifts are lol!
I loved brands like Ted Baker and later All Saints for most my early 20s and they were my “diffusion brand” brand of choice, but I got into Reiss lately and I love it. It doesn’t even feel like high street, at least not the men’s clothes, the quality and fit is so good. Last summer though I got into Paul Smith, their PS range is cheaper but still high quality but maybe you will get Made in Portugal not Italy. I am in love with my white trainers from there and they feel like a proper luxury pair but I got them for €200 on sale.
