Why you're WRONG about Season 5 of The Wire

The Wire is HBO’s gritty and realistic depiction of the Baltimore drug scene, told from the viewpoint of both the cops and the criminals. It is considered by many to be greatest television show ever made.
However, for various reasons, season 5 of The Wire is considered by many to be a disappointment, a step down from the usual high quality of The Wire. Today I wanted to offer a defence of season 5 of The Wire, and argue why it isn't as bad as people make out.

The only thing that has aged well about the Final Season is that you can look at the journalist aspect of the plot line and blurt out "Fake News". You basically pointed out all the things wrong about the 5th Season: Bad writing, uninteresting plot lines, 1 demisional characters, over the top storylines, and felt rushed. It's only saving grave was the smaller stories (Mike & Dukie, Omar vs Marlo, Bubbles etc.) And the Final montage that shows that nothing really changes in life, only thing that really changes are the faces of the people but the same story gets told over again But yea, The Wire S5 was a weak Season. A very Weak Season. It's not like Season 2 where the criticism was because the Cops/Criminals story arc was replaced with Dock Workers. And repeat viewings actually revealed a much bigger story that needed to be told. This was a simply rushed Season for a Series that deserved much better

I think that's one of the reasons the show is still so highly regarded today.

I always felt that the reason McNulty and Freamon were willing to create a fake Serial Killer was because they had finally reached their breaking point. McNulty was a patrolman and happy in his relationship with Beadie, not chasing big cases. But after Bodie's death he comes back on the team with a complete vengeance. Freamon is still running the Wire and now he feels the discovery of the bodies will finally be the push to come back at Marlo and get his off the streets but bureaucracy puts a stop to that: he can't believe all those bodies aren't enough to get the higher ups to do the right thing. They are at their wits end and it seems Marlo is going to win. These men who are so rooted in their ideals they decide to throw them away when they have a chance to "make things right" and attempt to nail Marlo. The ends justify the means. It's for the greater good. Would these two men normally do something like this? Of course not, I don't believe any of us would think otherwise. Could they do this if they were somehow pushed to? Under some extraordinary circumstances? "I don't know, but everyman has his breaking point." - Shawshank Redemption

The sensationalized serial killer stuff was also an expression of frustration from the writers. Shows like Dexter and Deadwood were getting a lot more attention at the time and the Wire took direct shots at both of them in dialogue on the show. McNulty doing something sensational out of frustration was a metaphor for how the writers felt while they were telling that story. It’s one a them meta narratives.

In terms of the McNulty serial killer angle, I used to think it was a little too out there. But then I remembered when Bunk said to McNulty that he was going to get caught. Bushy Top said "who TF is going to catch me?" I wholeheartedly believe that no one would catch him. Like he said, the city ignored real serial killers in Marlo, Chris, and Snoop. They wouldn't allow even one detective to work on the case. So his thinking is sound. Look at the other examples. In season 1, Bunk and McNulty had re-do the Deirdre Kresson murder scene because the original detective wrote like a page and a half then put it in a file never to be seen again. A detective couldn't be bothered to look more thoroughly into the murder of a young woman. In season 2, we see multiple departments trying their hardest not to be assigned the murders of those girls in the boat. Rawls practically backflipped when he thought he pushed the case off to another department. Leaderships of entire departments wanted nothing to do with trying to solve the murder of 20 women. In season 4, Freamon went to Landsman and said there are who-knows how many dozens of dead people are rotting in vacant row houses and Landsman took that information and sat on it. He didn't tell anyone. There were corpuses decaying in the city and a police sergeant kept it a secret. So I agree with McNulty. Who in that police department has the time or the inclination to look into this?

As you said, The Wire serves as a prequel to itself. Structurally the entire 5 seasons is cyclical, but it puts the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next at the midpoint of the show, season 3, instead of at the end. S3 is where the mouth of the Ourobouros meets the tail. Its amazing to watch play out, and I think its another reason S3 and S4 are so strong. In the hands of another writing team S3 and S4 would have been S1 and S2, showing the rise of a drug crew and the beginning of all these cycles first, but The Wire's structure makes it so much more interesting.

Having just binged the whole show for the first time I can say that most of the common complaints about S5 were apparent, but it's a still a very good season of TV. The more outlandish elements irked me as they were happening but I think they played out ok by the end of it (though it is a bit lazy how an actual killer ends up in their lap). Some of the dialogue was also uncharacteristically shoddy at times, particularly some of the justification for exposition. That specifically made me question if there were changes in the writer's room but those moments were mostly few and far between. As an aside it absolutely baffles me that people were/are down on S2. I can see at how it might be jarring at first but it's sooo good once it gets going. Frank Sobotka might be my favourite character of the whole show.

I remember watching these episodes during the first run and I found some of the moments to be incredibly fun because they were doing something so audacious in having McNulty and Lester do something so audacious. I loved the scene where McNulty meets with the Sun editorial team and we know that McNulty knows that the reporter is lying while McNulty lies to the whole room and the reporter looks so confused because he knows he made the stuff up. The scene where Lester goes along with McNulty's crazy plan is also great... because it is so unexpected... but is also makes sense because Lester has stuck it to the bosses before. There was also a small scene where after McNulty is doling out overtime for detectives to work other cases that he declines the overtime for one guy. You can just see that McNulty is now having to be like the bosses he always hated. And, after Kima tells the bosses, there is a great scene where Lester is somewhat puzzled why they are "not in cuffs" yet. He and McNulty are getting a sense how conspiratorial things are at the top because the bosses and Carcetti are trying to figure out how to spin things. And, as the video points out, there is the amazing moment when Rawls says to McNulty something like, "Please tell me you are not killing them yourself. Season 5 is weird... but it is so enjoyable to see all these people stretched to their limit. And, as the video says, the Hamsterdam "legalize drugs" story line is less realistic than cops faking evidence. 😀

Having a shorter season meant the writers had to wind up all the points of the whole series and drive home its meanings. The meaning being how lives are spent either trying to make a difference or just go along with the system. Cops like McNulty becoming zealots and criminals like Avon and Marlo trying to stay on top or move up to the top. And all for nothing. Everything everyone put their lives work into crumbles apart and it all begins again with new players as if the original players never existed. Season 5 was winding down the series from its first episode. And on that note, taken as whole story and not an individual season it succeeded well. Also, what's really overlooked is the final few minutes of the last episode that is devastating in its own subtle way. The best of any series ending in my opinion

Great video! It seems like lots of people misunderstand the meta element of season 5. I like that you pointed out the need for the show to sensationalize it’s storyline to stay funded, which in turn caused the writers to create a more original social commentary then just the run of the mill “gritty realism”. It may not have been what fans wanted or were expecting but The Wire was never interested in that. It was much more interested in challenging norms and debunking the systems that control our lives. On that level, season 5 accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do with some minor flaws here and there.

The Wire is one of my favorite HBO series of all-time and I can say with 100% confidence that season 5 is the absolute worst. I intentionally avoid it when I revisit the show. If there were an all-time worse seasons list it would be up there with season 8 of GOT. It's that bad. It's a shame since it has one of my favorite scenes from the show. Marlo's, "My name is my name" is one of the realist lines of the show. So, it's not like season 5 has no redeeming qualities but as a whole it's a waste of time. IMO it's not just comparatively bad to the other seasons of the show - it's just bad TV.

Something insane, I've seen The Wire four times now and have only gotten through two episodes of season 5 (on the second watch) and something about the ending of season 4, although it didn't wrap up everything I felt satisfied where everything ending it was arguably hopeful. I am now on my 5th watch , this time with my roommate so I think in a month or two I will have officially finished The Wire and I'm pretty sure I won't love season 5 the way I loved every other season I have mentally kind of told myself that season 5 is an epilogue

I personally loved season 5 and never felt like the quality went down. The newspaper fake serial killer thing was super compelling and at times hilarious. I think David simon, the creator of the wire, said it best when he felt the hampsterdam plotline of season 3 was way more unrealistic than McNulty's serial killer plot. That required an entire precinct to keep its mouth shut. Season 5 only involved like three people. Once it got to four or five someone snitched and it all blew up. One thing I will say was a bit underwhelming in season 5 was Onar's arc. He seemed like he got a bit desperate by the end to get Marlo. His tactic to force Marlo to the streets wasn't working. Omar from previous seasons would have regrouped and spent time healing after narrowly escaping the apartment trap. He was a very patient man at times, spending weeks on stakeouts for the perfect moment. Season 5 Omar didn't seem to have any patience.

I have watched the entire five seasons of The Wire 10 times - it never gets old for me. I regarded Season 5 as the weakest after its first broadcast, mostly because it seemed too compressed compared with the other seasons, partly because the fake serial killer bit seemed a bit of a stretch for a show of this caliber. Over time and repeated viewings I have come to have a warmer regard for S5, for many of the reasons you've outlined. And the press is a crucial part of our society. And this season has numerous "circle closers": 1. In S1 Herc and Carver test D'Angelo's pager, with Carver doing a fake Korean accent (Herc: "Sounded Chinese." Carver: Like you can fuckin' tell the difference."); in S5, Lester tests Marlo's number by pretending he's calling a BBQ joint number. 2. In S1 McNulty pilfers his upstairs neighbor's newspaper; in S5 McNulty pilfers a paper from the stand. 3. In S1 McNulty grouses out loud about the useless humps Polk and Mahone - "I wonder what you have to do to get fired from the Baltimore Police Department" - Kima replies, "Keep pulling some of your shit and you just might find out"; in S5, Kima delivers on that earlier remark by reporting him to Daniels. For many a TV series the final season is the weakest; I feel this way about The Wire, but this series is so superb that S5 is still first-rate. Omar forever!

I think of it like this, there is no such thing as a bad season of the wire, but I would say that season five is the weakest season because there were so many misses that they could’ve touched on, I read somewhere that Randy was supposed to find out that Cheese was his father, but there wasn’t enough space due to it only been 10 episodes for them to show that. Also, the newspaper and serial killer plots, you’re right I just can’t wrap my head around those two storylines but the side story lines which in my opinion should’ve been the main storylines were still really good.

I think the Wire is one of the five greatest shows in television history. That being said, I think Breaking Bad is the greatest television show ever made. Whenever I get in debates with people that think the Wire is the greatest show ever made, I throw out Season 2 and Season 5 of the Wire. There aren’t any seasons on Breaking Bad that have to be “Wiresplained”.

But...wait though? How do Seasons 2 and 5 of The Wire dethrone it though? Neither of those seasons are bad seasons of television at all. Not in the slightest. And they're both highly acclaimed seasons. Just because people subjectively didn't like or enjoy watching them doesn't equal terrible seasons of TV. Both seasons have merrits that can very heavily be argued as to why they stand out so much within the televised medium. This is a fact. There are people who definitely think Breaking Bad legit doesn't get good until it's last two seasons (I'm not one of those people as I was hooked from Season 1 tbh) despite all of the seasons being very entertaining and very distinctive in their own way and each season growing in intensity. Breaking Bad is my favorite show of all time, number 3 on my personal list but objectively I could never put it higher than The Wire. The ambition that that series even sets out for within its storyline alone puts it above BB for me and again I LOVE BB with all my heart and soul chile. We might possibly gain another BB in the future that may be able to equal its predecessor or be become as popular as it (hell you could possibly make that argument even now with Ozark now that I think about it) but I highly doubt we will ever in this lifetime get another "The Wire" which is why the series is and remains so timeless. Not to mention the ever continuing existing relevance this series is *still" bringing two decades after it first premiered. Also not to mention how this series can develop or change individual insights (this also still now mind you) on how we as a society view or understand things due to its sheer complexity and depth. I'm not saying that having more depth or complexity automatically makes any story top tier but with The Wire it's done beautifully as it is a show that rewards its viewers for how much you 're willing to pay attention to the story and challenges the viewer at their own personal look at society. The rewatch value alone...I think that literally speaks for itself. That for me just simply hasn't been topped yet.

It's certainly the funniest/most entertaining season for me, but for the same reasons other people don't like it. As someone who prefers Sopranos over The Wire, the 5th season is the closest to a more experimental/surreal style like the one in the Sopranos, and the faster pace made the show more enjoyable. The downside is that you can tell the journalist characters seemed more black and white than in previous seasons due to lack of time to make them more nuanced, and it's really hard to reconcile the central storyline with the tone of previous seasons, even though the Hamsterdam story was an obvious precedent.

Where to begin ? 1 I thought it was real corny how they allowed marlo to kill Joe so easy . 2 I thought it was real corny how Chris did not stand up to marlo about Michael . If Chris would have stood up to marlo about him thinking michael was a rat then snoop would not have gotten killed . She only got killed because michael was smart enough to figure it out they were setting him up to get killed . 3 I dont like how after joe got killed no body went to war with marlo after that . 4 I dont like how after marlo got bodie killed slim charles was still cool with marlo and his crew after that . 5 I dont like how they let greggs who was real cool with mcnulty end up being the one who turned on him and end up ratting on him . Why even allow jimmy to tell her ? 6 I definitely think the sun paper and fake serial killer angles were really lame .

I mean slim Charles wasn't cool with them. Just didn't have the muscle to go to war. He did eventually execute cheese. Who was at that point the power behind the organization. He just had to wait until it was expedient. I also think you not liking a plot point doesn't mean it's a bad plot point.." why didn't Christopher stand up to him? Marlo about Michael?. Recently rewatched the show and, yeah, I think 5 is the weakest season. Still good, not as good as the others. And a lot of what you already pointed out are the main reason; a shorter run time with only 10 episodes means that they can't flesh out characters as much, and that the Sun felt less nuanced and just bitter. I did also think about the part where you said that how come Gus seems too good but we don't mind Lester. And I think I have a reason for that as well. It's because Lester is a dark horse. When we first meet him he seems like, as McNulty put it, a house cat. That weird guy who sits and makes models, but then he goes out and produces a picture of Avon. Something the rest of the crew have been struggling and failing to do. He surprises us, because we underestimated him. Making him a bit more of an underdog that we've seen rise and get his fair share and respect. Gus on the other hand is introduced as a smart person and no-nonsense editor and stays that way. He's just good out of the gate with no mystery or other intruging bits. Also that he is an obvious stand in and mouthpiece for David Simon. That makes him feel less like a character and more like a self-insert Mary Sue which, in a show as well made as The Wire, feels off. I still like Gus and I think he has some great lines. But he is not as memorable or complex as other Wire characters. Which, frankly, none of the Sun characters are. Which I once again blame on lack of time and maybe, just maybe, Simon being a bit too vindictive about his old workplace.

The tragic scene where Mike drops Dukie off and one being the next Omar while the other becomes Bubs. Prez gets the handle of being a teacher and in a heartbreaking manner but realistic manner, hoping Dukie can be saved. The cycle of corruption and cyclical human behavior. Again never heard complaints. It's a 93 on Rotten Tomatoes.

I feel like Season 3 and 5 are more disliked than other seasons because they feature plotlines wich dive into the realm of "Fiction" more than people watching the show would be used to. The Wire observes, analyzes and interprets the world AS IT IS (or rather was at that time), however: The Hamsterdam / Serial Killer Plotlines always seemed to me like they were also proposing solutions in a way, wich would of course be doomed considering that the quintessence of every season is that NOTHING changes (not for the better at least).

The show was most definitely great because of its realness and you are correct that some of the later items didn't feel natural. I also found it very hard to believe the Greeks would just support Prop Joe being killed off by some young shoot first gangster who was making enemies all over the city. They would have never given up years of successful business dealing with a business man like Prop Joe for a kid who would most likely be dead any day.

If I had to say anything negative about season 5 it would be that it was too short and slightly rushed but thats about it. The theme of the entire season was based on lies... the bigger the lie being, the more people you would have believe and thats absolutely true in many cases. To the extreme just look at real life, things like the gulf war and the non existent weapons of mass destruction, the case of the Central Park five and many more. All cases based on false information but were driven on the belief that the information was 100% true. It may seem outlandish but season 5 still managed to drive the point home perfectly. Being the show never bowed to fan service which was a good thing, fans I think were disappointed that the story didn't end for many characters how the hoped it would but Bubbles coming full circle was perfect enough for me.

Sorry bud, but it’s you that’s wrong. Season 5 falls down because it's so clear that David Simon has a very personal axe to grind with the newspaper industry in Baltimore, and it completely skews his objectivity. In seasons 1-4 he shines a critical but dispassionate light on various parts of society, shows us how it works and lets us work out why that is so wrong. In season 5 he has these caricatures, clearly based on his own experience, and it is so heavy handed as to be unbelievable……as for the serial killer plot, fantasy land nonsense
