Agreed! At the beginning of the pandemic, my son came home from school to quarantine with me and my boyfriend and my guy had to tell him to not bother me while im doing my self care Sundays 🙃! And when he went back to his own apartment (whew chile!) He started doing his own self care routines!
My parents demonstrated this to my siblings and me. I show what my parents showed me to my teenage children. Especially on the bad days I dress my best and attempt to look my best and just doing that makes me feel better. Great tips!
I went through this spell of not taking care of myself for years...just going through the motions until the end of 2020...it's like I had woken up out of a long ass dream lol but every since then, I've been taking care of myself mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. It's not always easy but it's definitely worth it.
Yea it be like that sometimes life has a way of really dragging us under if we let it and instead of living we just survive and press on... But at least you were able to wake up so to speak and see that taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of everyone else 🙂

I’m really glad you’re talking about this, as women we’re now even more overwhelmed than ever now that we are working career minded women who are also mothers and wives. I went through a period where I would barely do anything to make myself look good, it took a toll on my marriage and I noticed my teenage daughter was following my lead. I snapped out of it and now I make it a point to get myself together every day! Even my bare minimum days I’m still put together well. Yes I use to be obsessed with how I looked my hair , nails, clothes always on point from day to nite, then I had twins in 2019 postpartum & let myself go I'm crying just typing this😩I want me back so badly! I’m not judgmental or anything when people are looking “busted” (I get it) and honestly it ain’t about me, but I must say I’m grateful to be served a look. It can actually boost my mood to go out and see beauty & health, etc in people passing by in addition to lovely architecture, dogs, weather, landscaping. It all can contribute to quality of life, I think.

I've always been a casual dresser but during/post pandemic I've turned super casual. One day I went to drop off some supplies to an older lady that goes to church with my mom. The lady had her hair done, light makeup, pretty jewelry and had a nice lounge set on (she wasn't going anywhere). Lol I was so embarrassed, I hadn't wore anything but sweats and leggings for over a yr at that point. I had to see a woman in her 70s out doing me to realize I REALLY fell off. It was a good wakeup call.

I struggle with anxiety for years but I will not let my looks go. I'm home a lot so even when I go out to Wal-Mart or anywhere I like to look decent. Just because I'm going through it doesn't mean I should look like I'm going through it.

you can do something like take one day a week and plan out your outfits. that way you know you always have a polished look ready to go. perfect your 10 minute hair/face routine...that should help you get on your way!

Self-care is so Essential. I can't express that enough. I found out the hard way when I was caring for my Sickle Cell Anemia son and then both of my parents before their deaths and the Arrangements after to give them all their respects. I'll do it all again if I had to, But I had forgotten how to take care of myself because I didn't take those gaps in time to do so. So whenever you're going through hard times Please always allow, even if a smidgen, time to care for yourself. I love how you mentioned to "Pour into Yourself. " You have to replenish because if you keep pouring out you'll find yourself in negative spaces.

Facts. If you are unrecognizable after make up, that’s called being in Drag. No disrespect to Drag Queens as a Teenager I had an adult drag Queen friend who actually taught me how to put my make up on and do eyebrows. So don’t come for me DragQueens. Just have different makeup needs.
Yeah, no shade but a lot of women are starting to look drag/trans because of the heavy makeup. Men need heavy makeup to exaggerate the feminine look they are going for. Women do not. 90s glam was amazing for Black women, imo and I wish we’d go back to it.

for me what helped me after a whole life of depression and lack of self care was just keeping it simple. clean face, maybe eyebrows and mascara, earrings, sunglasses, lotion, perfume and clean clothes. i used to do lots of makeup and truth is i’m tired(tamela mann voice) nowadays i only wear makeup on days i have the energy or events and take care of my skin on days i can’t. i’m trying to take care of my body and hair now
My mom is the same: single parent of 4, almost 60, working and always on fleek (Black moms don't play 😊) . I'm lazy sometimes but I've noticed that I always see cute guys when I'm not put together 😂🤔 (I'm single with no kids). Had to pause to really quickly speak on the topic. I just had a dream this morning (I know some won't understand) about this. And my first thought was, "stay ready so you don't have to get ready". Like you said none of us are always going to be "on", but putting yourself together when you leave home, even on the most basic levels. My mom was the same way, still to this day. Definitely something I caught from her growing up.

I have absolutely been having these thoughts lately and even my best friend the other day when I got all dolled up was like, she told her niece “that’s the Kedia I know,” I feel like since I’ve had my boys it’s just so much on my plate, that’s the last thing I’m thinking about, but your perspective on not wanting them to see you in that way is EVERYTHING! As a wife and mom of 4 kids for years I was running my self raggid. I think it somehow got ingrained into us women that we work, take care of the house, be a wife, take care of the kids, pour into everyone else and basically neglect ourselves. Many of us believe the lie- if everyone else is good around me then I'm good. But I learned it makes us overly stressed and our love and care for our family can turn into bitterness. One day an older lady who we went to church shared this wisdom take a break and take time to take care of yourself. But I'm super mom I dont need a break..or so i thought 🙂...I talked to my husband he had no clue how stressed I actually was. He watches the kids no problem and I went to enjoy some quiet time at the lake. It was very helpful 🙂 Since then I have been intentional with taking care of myself. If we as women are running on empty we cant help anyone else. Looking decent(not fashionista) and wearing perfum especially going into any business or store is not an option. I refuse to walk out the house in any house clothes, hair bonnets, etc. I'm not gonna walk around the house looking too raggedy either🙂😂
