I can't consume oil as it causes my rheumatoid arthritis to flare up for many months. It's not only oil, but anything high in saturated fat e.g butter, baked goods, etc. So I can totally understand what he is saying.

@@SybilAllysonStock I don't know as I don't consume it due to its very high saturated fat content. Remember that coconut oil is solid at room temperature which can't be said for most other oils. If you don't have any problems with it then I see no problem if you want to consume it. Same with any other food, even omnivore diet. But it's not something I would do for me. Again what works for me may be different for you.

Minimize it and make sure it's not exposed to light as much as possible. The goal is to chase omegas when you DO get lipids. Olives and their oil can deliver too much lipids, that's his point.

He mentioned eating whole olives as better than eating olive oil. Generally speaking though he doesn’t recommend them because of the salt. He recommends 900 mg sodium max per day.

I use extra virgin olive oil. I don't get that much calories from it-- about 300 calories worth. My weight is well below my BMI range; I'm considered underweight by some wonks. The fact that it stimulants my appetite I consider to be an advantage. I also eat nuts and seeds regularly and they don't make me gain weight. You say that eating a little animal product is perfectly fine and won't harm you, Dr. Lustig says that having a little sugar won't harm you. Why shouldn't the same relativistic logic apply to some cooking and salad fats? Are people on a plant-based Mediterranean diet consuming olive oil all dropping dead? Technically, we all dying-- it's just a question of how and when. But I don't see the justification of your black and white attitude toward oil.

@@mariav1234Bryan Johnson is not a doctor but he does lab check all his results. He does only recommend a very high- quality (high-polyphenol) olive oil as part of his overall protocol.

If I read Johnson's list of food intake correctly his consumption of olive oil is much more than just a little, and this deprives him of a significant amount of fiber and short chain fatty acids as well as the protein. Okinawan centenarians had a fat intake of only 6% middle of last century. So why would someone interested in longevity defy the proven and accept a theoretical advantage if any to adding olive oil which is obviously a processed food...and then take metformin to counter the effects. Is a puzzlement.

@DAVE_WHITE Walnuts are higher in omega 3s instead of omega 6s and thus are good for you to eat in moderation unless you are allergic to nuts like walnuts for example.

You are not trying to eliminate omega-6 fats. They are not bad. They are needed to be healthy. It's just that in the standard American diet we get way too much omega-6 and not enough Omega-3. There has to be a healthy balance between the two and when you eat a whole food plant-based diet you get that balance.

The issue with omega 6 is mostly an issue with ultra processed foods. If you cut those out, a bit of omega 6 from nuts is not a big deal, though walnuts are recommended in part because they contain omega 3.

I think I need me some flaxseeds/walnuts. I’ve been vegan for 5.5 years and started with Nutritarian recipes. For the past five years I’ve been doing the HCLF McDougall-ish thing. On HCLF I’m tired 75% of the time with or without coffee(I work early, full-time), my digestion is mostly irregular, and about half the time my hunger never feels satisfied. I used to feel energized.

@@MandyVeganGirl-rr3ws boost your fats a bit as they're necessary for hormone balance. I'd also say that your protein intake is likely too low (I disagree with a lot of plant-based opinions that protein isn't that important - a sufficient intake is vital for muscle preservation).

It's hard to see whether this is a food thing. I like the gbombs by Dr. Fuhrmann to make sure you get all the nutrients. Also, just eat more if you get hungry. Could be beans, tofu, tempe, nuts, seeds etc.

It is still highly processed and no fiber. Americans over do everything in mass quantities. What might be slightly beneficial or neutral in one culture becomes unhealthy or sickening in America over time.

My Sicilian relatives lightly drizzle over a large family platter of vegetables a little touch of olive oil so freshly pressed it's still cloudy, but in the U.S. people will dump a quarter cup on a small individual salad (with croutons, bacon bits and cheddar shreds) and proclaim it healthy and ' Mediterranean '.

I don't think you have to choose between olive oil and nuts and seeds. I eat a ton of both along with Avocados , salmon, eggs and cruciferous vegtables and have no fat and don't gain weight. One shouldn't generalize. There are too many variables.

What about phytic acid, seeds nuts contain a lot of phytic acid plus the legumes etc, if we increase the nuts and seeds how will this effect mineral absorbtion?

If you soak, sprout, ferment, or cook nuts, seeds, grains, or legumes, the phytic acid and lectins break down and are not problematic. Also, that is not usually a problem in a well-balanced diet but may be a problem in cases of malnutrition or low nutrient density.

I get the caloric rush from oil but olive oil has done so well on my immune system but with that said, nuts and seeds are great, much better in some aspects. Also telling people to avoid olive oil to avoid getting breast cancer which in turn comes from actually being overweight? Inducing fear in foods that by themselves do nothing but good for you isn't ideal, not being overweight is the point of this video. Eating 2 tablespoons of oil wont make you fat, total calories will. Again, I get your point but oil itself is lowering inflammation and so much more.

Nonsense! The average American consumes one quart of Olive Oil per year and that’s not Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The average Spaniard consumes Five GALLONS of Extra Virgin Olive Oil per year and they live longer than Americans and enjoy much better health! Do some research before being so dismissive!

Not true-a carnivor will eat another mammal. For example, a huge Grizzly bear in Jasper National Park has been observed sleeping on top of a huge Elk because it was eating it and it guarding the carcass, eating all of it over a month. Clearly you have never had a cat either. I lived in a rural home for the first 20 years of my life, and my cats and dogs hunted rodents and birds and ate them all the time, even those they were fed. They obviously were acting on instinct and preferred the food their mothers' taught them to hunt. Cats will even catch fish! I agree that all refined oil is bad for us, but what you said about animals is not correct. I love you podcasts! Cheers

What a low blow by Dr. Fuhrman. He knows all too well that it was the late, distinguished Dr. John McDougall who famously would say that "The fat you eat is the fat you wear." Fuhrman is still holding a grudge against him ever since McDougall humiliated him during a panel discussion years ago with other leading plant-based medical doctors. And now he's saying that incorporating animal products is perfectly fine, especially for certain people?! GOOD GRIEF! Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Jr., Dr. Michael Greger, Dr. Michael Klaper, Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, and others would be aghast -- not to mention McDougall. I'm sticking with those leading iconic and highly esteemed medical doctors and scientist/researcher (Campbell). Their documented studies and all the thousands of their patients who showed amazing results by eating an entirely plant-based diet that is low in fats (about 10% of daily calories coming from whole fats) are proof enough for me to stay clear from any animal products. About the only good thing Fuhrman says in this clip is to stay away from ALL cooking oils (including everyone's beloved olive oil). Other than that, though, Fuhrman appears to be on his own in his views. I, personally, wouldn't listen to him, and I'm done following him, with the one major reason being the disrespect he just showed here toward the late great Dr. John McDougall. What a low blow! Peace.

Fat consumption for me personally satiates so I no longer get drawn in, and graze when food passes my line of sight. I expect also that seed oil's are often just one or two fats. Omega 6 inflammatory, and Omega 3 healthy. Ghee with the proteins removed is multiple fat types, and other component's so is much closer to a whole food. A living plant cell has multi vitamins, carbs, and raw proteins, and other component's, as with meats. A good Celtic salt, or black Himalayan has multiple mineral's. That is the key. Food that gives as wide a range of components as possible in a natural whole food form. Avoid singular type food additives. Be real.

Your info is excellent. Your judgement comes through and spoils it plus your disgust for other diets comes through and takes away from learning neutrally about addictions to sugar and starch and effect on brain. Starch and sugar trigger insulin which is what makes you fat not fat in diet.
