Today’s guest passionately believes that the decisions we make every day about what we eat, have a huge influence on our overall health. Dr William Li is a medical doctor, internal medicine specialist, research scientist and the author of the 2 international bestsellers, Eat to Beat Disease and Eat To Beat Your Diet. He works in a field of research called Food as Medicine and having been involved with the development of many different drugs over the past few decades, he is passionate about using scientific rigour to analyse the specific benefits of food.
Dr Li has been a guest on my podcast on 2 previous occasions - Episodes 234 and 376 - and those episodes remain some of the most downloaded episodes in the history of my show. Today’s brand new episode was actually a conversation Dr Li and I recorded together around 2 years ago, but the content within it, is just as relevant today.
In this conversation, we covered a broad range of food related topics that people often find confusing, with the intention of providing more clarity. We start off talking about the foods we might want to consider cutting back on, due to their negative effects on our health. We talk about sugar, artificial sweeteners, ultra-processed foods, alcohol, and the problems with reusing oil when frying.
We also talk about the practical steps we can all take immediately, when it comes to choosing foods that will enhance both our short term and long-term health.
We cover so many different topics today, including:
• how you can go about choosing a good quality olive oil,
• the benefits of pairing certain foods together to increase nutrient absorption,
• how we can increase the amount of vitamin D in mushrooms,
• why organic foods are healthier,
• how to best read food labels,
• the link between the foods we consume and autoimmune disease,
• whether supplements are beneficial, and so much more.
Dr Li is someone who wants joy to be at the heart of how we think about our food choices and our health. He is knowledgeable, passionate and a wonderful communicator. I always enjoy my conversations with him, I hope you enjoy listening.

In 🇲🇦 morocco my grandmother used to drink 5 spoons of olive oil that she made herself. And everything she baked was with olive oil. She lived for 108 years and was so healthy. I miss her so much. ❤️ she also used to eat figs from her own tree and dates.

I grew up in the 60’s this information is what my moms best friend told us. In the over 50 years I knew her she rarely got sick. She knew her system so well she could immediately eat or drink something that would take care of a potential problem before it could take root in her body. She grew her own food, foraged for what she didn’t grow and taught me so much. She had a phrase that I have followed, “Use what God gave ya not what Man made ya”

Excessive sugar can also be addicting. I struggled for years with a sweet tooth. Then last July I came down with Covid. I got very sick, and both my blood sugar and blood pressure got very high. I ended up not being able to eat hardly at all for almost two weeks. After I recovered, I was able to cut out sweets and pastries completely from my diet. Although my strength and stamina was greatly reduced due to the covid, but I have been feeling better otherwise.

Sugar causes insulin resistance , after your liver cannot process sugar as quick as you consume more and more .This results in metabolic illhealth , which leaves us susceptable to disease like covid.Utube has videos of Robert Lustig , Endocrinologist , wrt Sugar resulting in Susceptability to chronic diseases. Its the reason Countries with Obesity epidemics( USA/ Britain /Europe) had excessive covid fatalities and , conversely , why Countries without obesity epidemics (African Countries) had low covid mortality rates .

I have been sick with covid for the past 2 weeks and I literally fasted for the 1st week because I was so sick, I couldn't eat. During that time, I stopped drinking coke, coffee, lattes... I stopped my addiction to painkillers (opioids), I stopped my sugar addiction. Now, I can only eat fruits and veggies and can only drink water. I have no desire for pain pills or sugar anymore. Covid was a blessing in disguise. But like you, I am so weak. Did you ever restore your strength and energy? If so, how?

Actually after listening to a lot of these expert doctors, honestly what I am starting to believe is that I (and those of us lucky enough to have) hippietype moms and grandmas always taught us: sweets are reserved to special occasiona like birthdays only, foods in their natural form are best (processed foods rarely, like monthly, not 5 days a week). Organic or nongmo is better than not. Look on EWA list for the best 15 fruits and veg with least pesticides). Cook more. Use little if any sugars.

You are a great interviewer. You go straight to the point and allow your guests to expand on their expertise. If I may make a suggestion, we would highly appreciate it if you could split your videos into chapters (e.g., a chapter for every question your make).
@stevewatson3870
@stevewatson3870 2 года назад
I like the format and the flow of each answer from an expert. One question and answer would be limiting for the expert whose breadth and depth of knowledge we can benefit from. If there is too much for you take in and remember at one sitting go back over the video and summarise key points. Often the interviewer offers a transcript of the talk so all you need to do is include the expert’s explanation in each answer within the transcript. You will be reinforcing your understanding of the material and have a future reference you can quickly search through rather than rewatching the video.

With Tea and Milk , I would disagree , the interview maybe implied that tea and milk not healthy ? I know lots of 80 ➕ grannies of ww2 generation .on 6 plus cups a day 🤣 The difference is they ate less processed food , cooked much more homecooking,, and often just more active , walking to shops , gardening , cleaning ! Just busy . Compare tea and milk to a can of Coke or fruit juice drink ! , then tea and milk becomes a SUPERFOOD, PERSPECTIVE also important :) great interview lots of great stuff 👍 🙂

First off I want to say I don't have a spleen or a gallbladder. they've been gone since 1998 and I have chronic inflammation. Foods in my body cause inflammation but the ones that causes the most inflammation is sugar and wheat and dairy. and it affects my heart the most. yes if it wasn't for how it affects my heart I would go ahead and eat it. but as soon as I have consumed these products my heart starts beating a lot faster and often times I end up with tachycardia and irregular heartbeat. So I have had to reduce the intake of these foods substantially. The more I take these foods out of my diet the less inflammation I have the more my heart behaves.❤

Now, I noticed that not very many cook their own meals. I still do. Our kids are skinny. We are slightly overweight maybe 10-15 lbs, probably due to getting older and slower metabolism. We stay away from processed foods, our kids “kinda”, since they have their own families now. I totally agree, you eat right and stay active you’ll be fine.

I worked in a supermarket deli one time and I soon discovered that the "ruts" in the bottoms of my sneakers would be packed full with fat at the end of every night. At first, I couldn't imagine what was all over my floors when I got home, and what was on the matt in my car and I soon realized what it was. I also realized that while slicing all of these deli meats, this fat was floating around in the air and landing on the floor, my hair, my clothing and I was obviously also breathing it in. I loved the job and the customers but quit soon after I realized what I was breathing in by cutting all those meats all day. It was rather shocking.

Hello Dr Chatterjee. First of all thank you so much for your great videos and super interesting guests that you have on your podcasts. I have learnt a lot in just a few weeks thanks to you all. I have a suggestion for a future podcast, perhaps you could discuss the topic of combining healthy food with seasonal/local food? Personally, as someone who lives in the northern part of Europe, I try to always eat with the seasons and from the region I live in. Fruit like kiwi, guava, avocado, even tomato have often been recommended but I am reluctant to buy items that have been transported through half the world on cargo ships for me to eat. Avocado can also have environnemental repercutions, because ot the amount of water they require, deforestation etc. So while it might be great to consume these fruit when you live in all-year-round hot countries, in northern countries it might not be ideal if you're trying to eat healthy but also limit environnemental damage. It would be amazing to have someone tell us what winter foods are the healthiest or some tricks like making your own pickled food etc. I'm sure some winter vegetables have also been forgotten since we're able to get anything we like in any season now. . Just some "food for thought"! :)
