Warning! You must sign up and provide CC info for recurring charges after the trail. Be forewarned, the following day (March, 14th) applies a charge of $141.00. What happened to the times where something free is actually that... Now they have my personal info for free. Hopefully my experience will help others. Good Luck Photographers! Edit. Hi... I like the way you do your videos. I always found it hard to like LR mobile :) but... I always keep trying things :) So after watching I thought I'd give it another try but ran into a dealbreaker straight away. Maybe I just did something wrong but is it true that the mobile app doesn't download all the Smart Previews during the sync process? When I start the app it syncs and the collection matches the number of photos which are on my laptop but when I start culling on my iPhone it downloads the photos which are displayed and when I scroll down it downloads the next photos. The syncing process says it finished so it just looks like it only syncs certain data but not the actual Smart Previews. Do you have any insights regarding this issue? Because if this is how Adobe does it, it would be possible to sync multiple weddings and then work on them in an Airplane or when I am on holiday without a data connection.

I still prefer lightrorom classic and photoshop on my desktop..BUT Lightroom mobile gives me the ability, while on set, to quickly edit a photo for a model or client, giving them a quick preview of my final look. And this has been invaluable.

For color sensitive work it's probably not the best idea to be switching from phone to ipad to desktop. not everything is calibrated similarly, and it may vary from device. Same with brightness. Maybe not an issue for most people, but for printing it matters. I'm interested in being able to cull and sort photos with CC though. That seems like a much better use for my workflow.
@Bver69
@Bver69 5 лет назад
Niptin for most workflows those differences wouldn’t matter. Likely most people won’t send final files to clients or print from a mobile device but you *could* if you needed to. Also Apple products have really good Color right out of the box so it’s mostly a non-issue in that ecosystem.
@Niptin
@Niptin 5 лет назад
@@Bver69 I appreciate the response, and you're right: for most work you wouldn't show a client a final image like that, or print off of a phone. And I'm sure apple has great color as well. But, in the fine art world, not having a device that can be calibrated by taking into account the surrounding ambient light or or be tweaked still means there is inaccuracy in color production when printing. Color reproduction changes from printer to printer, camera to camera, editing process to editing process. The professional photographers I know don't use apple screens to edit photos (though they are quite good). They use monitors specifically made to deal with 100% (or as close as mechanically possible) color accuracy. For most people, they won't notice or care, but for printing, I would leave the color editing to the desktop and transfer file storage to the other mobile devices.

No not interested but then, I dumped Adobe software a decade ago, I dont like anything about it at all. But that is a digression and personal taste. I just dont get this mobile thing at all, it seems so primitive; just old technology, its flogging a dead horse. I dont use mobile software because my entire workflow is now mobile, why use cut down stuff when you can have the full power of your main workflow? I replaced my desktop Linux 7i tower at christmas. I bought a HP Spectre x360 quad core 7i 13in ultrabook. Yes it was expensive (it was actually more expensive than apple) but, it has replaced my desktop completely. The HP will operate as a tablet and will slip into my Crumpler bag with my Pixel2 XL panda phone and my camera stuff and I hardly know its there. It has a 4K screen and has my entire main HD wherever I go; what we used to call the dream a "lifedrive" in the 80s. Everything synchs with the cloud, of course. When I get home I put the HP on my desk and plug in the single thunderbolt cable that supplies power and drives my HP Docking Station, 27in ASUS/B&O monitor, ASUS Xonar DAC driving my Cyrus Hi-Fi, Optical and backup drives with Keyboard plus mouse deskset; it becomes my dektop computer. Wherever I go I can use my full software suite to process my images. I really cant go back to phones and tablets; this is what I dreamt of all my life, everything at my fingertips everywhere i go in a tiny ultraslim package ;-)
@vicibox
@vicibox 5 лет назад
I bought both he he; how embarassing is that? My basic needs were 13in to fit in my crumpler bag along with either my Panasonic GX9 or my Leica TL2 plus power graphics for gaming running 3D virtual world software like Firestorm and Singularity (I have a art gallery in Second Life where I have my shows). Well I decided it would have to be the dark ash silver coloured HP Spectre (I too looked at the Dell XPS and the ASUS Zenbook) and at the last minute I saw a clearance HP with a graphics card so snapped it up. Oh dear, I hadnt noticed that because it was clearance a 15in had sneaked into my preferrences. Well I didnt even notice my mistake when it came, it was absolutely fantastic until, I tried to slip it into my bag; ooops. Well suddenly the light dawned to clear my gloom, my Sister was using a very old Sony Viao so I gave her the 15in for Christmas (she is over the moon) and re-ordered a 13in 7i. OMG yes its a beast, when plugged into the HP Elite X2 USB-c docking station I cant tell I am not using my old tower. Even without separate graphics card I am getting 15fps on 3D rendering (I get 30fps on my high powered 7i tower with mid performance NVIDIA card and I cant really see the difference). It easily handles the 24MP raw files I get using GIMP and my raw loader Darktable so I am very happy. No more tablets running text clients with a bluetooth keyboard on trips again; the world is my oyster ;-)

Until iOS supports local storage management and file transfers properly you should stick to LR Classic. There is also a consistency issue between synced files. I've had numerous images that look completely different on mobile compared to what I edited in LR Classic. In my experience, cloud syncing is just not consistent yet. I might sound like a downer but if Apple fixed these crippling flaws I would buy a ipad in a heartbeat.

@@Bver69 that's what i read and it is pretty amazing, but what about the screen brightness and temperature. I guess the second one falls into accurate color representation. But for brightness, is there a way to adjust it knowing where to set it to have same results on a printer or on your other calibrated screen? Thank you for answering!
@Bver69
@Bver69 5 лет назад
Wouldn’t be any different than finding the right brightness on you desktop monitor really. If the display is good the brightness would effect colour representation and you probably wouldn’t, in most cases, send to clients or print straight from the mobile device but do a cursory look on the desktop first.
@Memo.esperanza
@Memo.esperanza 5 лет назад
@@Bver69 I used a calibration system for my monitor so it tells me what the brightness should. That's my concern for the Ipad or any tablet since from what I've read you can't calibrate it. I guess I could do some test to find the right spot tho. Thanks
@Bver69
@Bver69 5 лет назад
@@Memo.esperanza Honestly if your desktop display is the correct brightness then you could probably just hold your iPad next to it, match the brightness, and make note of what level it needs to be at. Make sure it set it back to that level before doing any critical exposure work or sending to client / print. Honestly being travel friendly the iPad is meant to be used in all kinds of lighting conditions including very bright situations so that will throw off your working brightness level anyway.

@walrusgumboot
@walrusgumboot 5 лет назад
I don’t disagree with you, it would be great to have a proper file system etc. I do think perhaps the workflow is better than maybe you realize. Import raw photos from an SD card or camera’s WiFi - full raw files get stored in the cloud and editable anytime anywhere without taking up your iPads internal storage. Get home on the desktop and full RAW’s are already there waiting for you with all the processing that you did on the iPad already applied. Full photoshop will be available this year. I use Dropbox to transfer other files in/out - not perfect but in practice it does work well. I barely use my laptop anymore.

in fact, on iOS 12 the “file system” is available (Files.app) and only lacks support for external hard drives over a cable; plus the photo import must go through Photos.app. Other apps (Affinity Photo) have proper file management. Adobe just wants you to use their cloud over cheaper, faster, more convenient iCloud or Dropbox or Google Drive and provides very limited options to interact with files.

LR is meant to be a streamlined version of PS for the common tasks every photographer needs. Instead of adding a layer for WB, then contrast, then sharpening, etc., you just drag a slider for each. However, for major retouching, you still need to take the file into photoshop.

I've used it before when it first came out. It wasn't terrible on a Samsung Note Pro 12 tablet for the kind of usual adjustments you would be doing in LR (WB, sharpening, exposure, etc.) With these proxies Ted is talking about it should be fine on almost anything. Also, back then it wasn't meant as a replacement for a desktop, it was meant as an on the go tool. This was a few years ago though and I imagine it has only gotten better.

Adobe needs to give users more control over cloud storage. Trying to delete files and folders and have the delete persist across all devices is cumbersome. iPad OS with a file system has helped considerably. Do your image culling from a large shoot outside of the app. Lightroom wants to upload everything to the cloud and that slows everything down.

David Apodaca you don’t need to “switch” per se. They work in tandem. If you have an adobe subscription plan you just login in the mobile and desktop apps and choose what you want to sync. Doubtful most people would want to fully switch to LR mobile exclusively. The storage and backup workflow would be limiting and cumbersome. Keep your main RAW files on your sync’d desktop (with maybe some imports in LR mobile while travelling).

I found your channel when putting together my Wine Country Camera 150mm system for my Tamron 15-30mm G2. I was envious of all the attachments he threw in for you. I love my Tamron 15-30mm G2 but the attachment I wish i had had available on multiple occasions is the 77mm ring attachment. I don't know how much time it would take to move the casing from one lens to the other but I suspect that it wouldn't take any longer than changing the lens provided the 77mm attachment was already in place. If needed, I could carry along my old Nikon 300s body which I believe is a good body for telephoto purposes, wildlife etc... but my reason for this message is in regards to workflow, I'll break it down, quickly. My goal is to not take up any more room than necessary on my devices. I'm shooting with Nikon z6 I have the Adobe 4 package with PS, LR, LRCC + CREATIVE CLOUD. Typically my flow goes as follows, 1) shoot, 2) scroll through in camera and filter out any bad images and delete. 3) Download onto laptop or pull them up on my tablet when I'm mobile but only download what I will be editing. Also, my camera body is set to save Raw + Fine JPG. Ok, so far this system keeps my tablet operating freely. On my laptop, a gamer Asus and fairly new, I will have my initial download to my photos. From their I'll drag photos as needed to edit in one of the 3 applications and then I'll save it to the cloud. I edit the JPG copy when I'm editing, usually for IG and FB for now. I save the raw file for more important edits. 1st ?, Should I be dragging everything to the cloud as a 2nd backup source or just what I'm working on at the time? 2?, Also, when I am on lightroom in my tablet I can't seem to locate images that i saved from photoshop to the cloud on my laptop. 3?, Also, can I download LRCC onto my Samsung S4 tablet? 4?, Also have you heard if the mobile version of photoshop is ready yet or is that what PS mix is all about? I wasn't impressed by PS mix. Any other thoughts you have regarding anything, I'm interested. I have an external hard drive for backing everything up as well. Finally, I'm a student of film days and I took a long break since 2001, I'm about up to speed on things but I still am having difficulty with presets. Photoshop is not my strength, and I'm color challenged to make things even trickier. Often when people are talking about different subtle colors in an image, I can stare side by side and it's simply lost on me. I've gotten by, but I'm definitely a pure shooter and I see more in textures and balance and depth. Thanks for all the great videos.

I’ve been using Lightroom mobile on my iPad Pro. But I encountered one problem with the cloud storage. It fills up quickly and often ran out of storage. I ended up having to delete photos to free up space. How can I solve this problem?

Awesome video Ted, really informative. Thank you. What I'm most curious about is how do you archive and back up with your new workflow? Is it that you import all your RAWs into your Hardrives first? Do you do that from a PC or the iPad? Also with Sync I'm not fully sure but how do you choose what you want to sync to adobes cloud and what you don't want to- especially since you say select images. And since you are editing on the ipad, what do you do when you are finished editing? How does that affect your catalog especially if you may want to go back to a previous edit? The editing is definitely very possible but the workflow around it I'm very confused about and would love to know how it can be done to access the laptop/computer as little as possible. I know it's a lot of questions but thanks in advance

depends on your work. just note that 4gb of with IOS optimization so it can do more than expected...if you need more and is a big baller. cough cough the 1tb has 6gb of ram.

LR CC is great and the few issues I have with it still revolve around not always knowing where the original file is-if I import on the iPad then see it on desktop, does the iPad version convert to a smart preview to save space? Also, I often finish an image on the iPad and want to be able to download the full version... please correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think this is possible if you’re working with a smart preview. Ted, If you have presets in Classic, will they also work in CC? I was looking to purchase some RNI presets and I see they have separate purchases for both Classic and CC. I most want them for classic, but would love to have them everywhere... I guess I should probably contact their support!

Are you using an USB-c 3.0 cable with the new iPad? The cable that apple provides is only 2.0 and much slower. Bought a 3.0 cable for 15 dollars and data transfer off camera (Sony A7iii ) is now much faster. Even though I don´t like adobe‘s subscription model, I am now using Lightroom cc on my 12.9 iPad as well. Like the simple interface and the powerful tools. The selective edits even allow for moire removal.

I would definitely use mobile more if I could transfer raw settings as xmp files directly without the need to put my RAW files through my slow internet connections. But sadly I cant find them stored as files, the *.dngs are save without my develop settings, so no way to transfer files directly, deal breaker for countries with slow internet.

To respond to your in-video request... More Lr mobile tutorials please? I love using mobile myself but have one gotcha in culling (vs my laptop). On MBP it's easy for me to spin quickly thru the shots in the album I imported and just "x" (to reject) as I go. I then go back once I'm done and filter to show just the rejects, and move them to -extras and go back to working on . But sometimes I purposely shoot 1-2 stops under to preserve highlights and so need to do "Shift-A" to get auto settings. This works great on MBP but I haven't found an easy way to do both "auto" and then "reject" on mobile. Since I need to switch from "Rate & Review" mode (only place I can reject) to "Edit" mode (only place I can use auto button). Has anyone found a way around this? So to bring it back to an actual video request. How do you cull hundreds of stills, some of which need auto?

The Android app doesn't have the option for Only Download Smart Previews, I was wondering why it takes so long to start showing images compared to Google Photos. Although zooming in looks like it is a proxy.

Yes, Lightroom CC mobile is amazing. I don’t have the biggest library, so have been able to accommodate all my photos with their 1TB plan. So I can even access photos I took in 2003 on my phone or iPad at anytime, if there’s a good wifi connection. All my professional work is done on my iPad Pro (The 2017 model). For jobs where I need to remove the background I use Affinity Photo. Which I have found for masking works just as well as Photoshop. One amazing feature of CC worth mentioning is the search. It’s like searching for images on Google, except all the search results are your own photos.

thank you, Ted! Really cool tips. I switched to Lightroom mobile a year ago, but still can’t create stable workflow. I thought that the normal time to use Lr will be during back flight, but it’s always something that more important or you really tied too much. What about you? When do you work with stills? Thank you!

I have not switched away from LR because I actually want the workflow you've described. I do something similar. However, I tried to go further with getting LR Classic and CC desktop to sync presets.... and I've ended with no presets syncing at all anywhere.

I’ve gone 100% to LR CC mobile. I love not having to carry a laptop with me all the time! It’s odd to see other companies like Skylum and Capture One refusing to acknowledge the importance of mobile. Reminds me of the days when Microsoft laughed at Apple when they came out with a phone!

I ditch my computer and use only Lr CC on my iPad pro 12,9"... such a pleasure to use! Just hope Adobe will include some features like panorama merge, HDR, and the possibility to bring presets from files directly in the iPad (now you need to import them from Lr CC on computer to synchronize and have them on iPad). Adobe should think the iPad app as a standalone version, not an extension to the desktop Lr CC... same with the yet to come Ps iPad.

Here is my issue: I'm not a big cloud fan. Relying on fast bandwidth to work on my images seems like an extra layer of what can go wrong. Plus we now have lightning fast tablets. We can do pretty much all we want on a tablet. The tablet needs to occupy the realm of what the laptop did: Having a remote ability to do tethered photography, cull and, yes, bring your presets, to preview as close to your final image on the road as you would have at your workstation. When you get home, you can just copy your images and catalog from where you were at and pick up from there. Now adobe using the cloud to sync remotely? I can see the value in that, bit it should not be your only option. What I need fro, LR mobile is: 1) tethered shooting to see my image on a big display like the ipad. 2) ingest into a specific catalog. 3) rename images to coincide with the catalog and project. 4) do initial culling and rating, 5) Ballpark to fine tune looks while on the road, have the ability to send proofs (IOS makes this such a pain as far as organizing, perhaps LW mobile can create a proofing output dir). 6) Using syncing to sync to a catalog at home or generate said catalog at home. When I get home the big data transfer of GB's of RAW or DNG images can happen there where they are archived on the desktop, backed up, and then maybe tweaked for final look on a large calibrated monitor. Does this workflow jive with anyoen else. Granted I'm still stuck on a pre-lightroom Mobile workflow. Please correct if not out flat educate me on how to do this. thank you!

It seems like you only have a few GBs of photos synced via adobe cloud at any given point in time. I’m most curious about where the majority of your photos live and what the process of moving photos from Lightroom CC to this other storage medium looks like. I initially subscribed to the one library mentality and synced multiple TBs of RAWs into Lightroom CC, but quickly discovered the performance limitations of the desktop edition of Lightroom CC. Having a structured process of moving photos out of Lightroom CC so only the most recent photos are living there would be a great help to me.

Ted, I'm a huge fan of syncing with LR, especially for online sharing. One frustration that I have is that you can only sync one catalog. I use Lightroom classic and when switching from computer to computer it's a pain to change the catalog you're syncing. Is that a non-issue with mobile? Thanks!

I use Lightroom mobile to do all my basic edits while commuting to work and back. Back home i just recheck on my desktop and fire it out. But the sync sadly still does not fully work. My Tablet never has all presets, and it seems to be connected to which type of photo (raw/jpg) you are editing. So often on my phone there is everything, and on my tablet there is just some of the stuff. That weirds me out. But i think they are on a really great way!

Can you have Lightroom Classic auto sync with LR mobile? I remember you used to have to create smart previews or something and it was kind of annoying to remember to do that. I also really do not like LR CC so having an option to auto synch on LR classic would be nice. Is there something like that?

I've been trying a LR mobile centered process for the last year. It's been somewhat frustrating, and I often ended up preferring my laptop. After a spill on my laptop, I'm forced to choose between LR mobile only and spending a bunch of money that I'd rather not spend. That's a long winded way of saying that I'd love LR mobile tips and tutorials!

Lr works with Android too. My Samsung Galaxy & Tablet sync zero problem. The 100% auto download upload is a P. I. A. and the sooner you find it and turn it off. The less you'll have to delete.
