Moving day for me to Chiang Mai in July 1 (arriving on the 2nd). Besides the culture, which I love, the amazing people, the outstanding coffee and food, the weather, and the cost of living, the main reason I'm moving comes down to two simple words. Sabi sabi!

Tony we decided 4 years ago that we were going to retire in Thailand. There’s so many financial benefits and we fell in love with the country and the Thai people along with the food. Beautiful country 🏝️🙏 however it’s not for everyone I recommend a trial run of a year before you decide live in different areas and actually see if it’s for you. Take your time.

I know you know that there are some negative things about Thailand like hot weather, air pollution, traffic accidents. However, you choose to appreciate the good things of Thailand. Thank you for loving Thailand.

it baffles my mind how many people are worried about health care outside of the U.S. U.s. healthcare is some of the worst healthcare in any modern country in the world. The vast amount of bankruptcy, botched surgeries and horrible insurance companies is staggering. The fact that like 70% of Go fund me accounts are asking for money to pay their medical bills says it all. No other modern country in the entire world forces people to file bankruptcy for medical bills. smh. There are literally dozens of countries that have much better health care than the U.S.

I have a friend who filed bankruptcy because she had leukemia and needed bone marrow transplant. She didn't have a good health insurance so she and her husband had to file bankruptcy. Her husband had to ask Gofundme for financial help. It was very stressful for them. Thanks God she is now cancer free. Considering being in US, this is very 😢

The healthcare here in Thailand vs the US is truly amazing. The access is great. I arrived in Bangkok at 3pm and went online to book an appointment with a dermatologist. An hour later they emailed to ask me to come in the following morning. No forms to fill out. I saw the dermatologist, she correctly diagnosed my problem, and I paid on the way out. The doctor’s visit plus medication, I think, was about $125. The healthcare costs are relatively inexpensive but they are not free. So if you have essentially free healthcare in your home country then it will be more expensive here. If you want insurance (I have Thai insurance) you will be buying into a private insurance market. Pre-existing conditions will likely be excluded. If you are of retirement age it will cost more though my Thai policy is about the same as my previous US policy. If you are over 70 years old it will be very difficult to get Thai insurance.

We are coming in August for a long vacation and we hope to have a incredible time and we are excited about the possibility of relocating. Reasons are adventure, better quality of life, the weather, and the financial impact. We are spending 3000 just on the house, electricity cable monthly, not to mention the food bills are way beyond out of control. People are not friendly and are bitter. The political side. I could go on, but all in all its time for a change.

Hi Tony, I’m Matt from Hawaii and I have been watching your videos from the beginning of your journey and I have sent comments and asked you many questions and you always responded and gave me great information. I finally did it. I arrived in old city on may 10 th. It’s only been a few days but I really like it. I am planning on spending about 2 1/2 months here and then 2 months in Malaysia. I would love to buy you and your wife lunch one day in a week or so if that works for you. I would like to try old city smoke house. It looks to be in the top right corner of old city. Have you ever been there and it so is it good. The reviews seem good for ribs and brisket.

You might want to consider doing a video on banking. I’ve been to 15 banks and 3 visa brokers. Only one of the brokers promised he could do it tomorrow. In the recent past the Thai government started a crackdown on money laundering and it means the banks aren’t considering accounts on tourist visas. Wouldn’t be a problem but need 600,000 baht to get a retirement visa

Another great video Tony. Are there lakes and rivers in Chang Mai people use to swim rather than the long drive South to the beach, or do they just rely on pools? Great content as always - and stay safe on that motorbike 🍺

I think new taxes introduced by Thai govt are making all expats nervous and leaving. Andrew Henderson has done a nice video on it too. I have no desire to pay 35 percent tax on remittances to Thailand so I am not moving to Thailand now. It's an overkill

Did you investigate it? If you did you would not worry depending on your home country. Look up Thailand tax treaty and see if your country is on the list. There are 61. Nobody is looking for themselves...... Double Tax Agreement (DTA) This agreement exempts any individual residing in Thailand and the country where Thailand has signed the agreement from from paying income taxes on both countries. To clarify, an individual can pay income taxes in the country where the individual is currently residing. The DTA has several purposes regarding income tax: Prevent double taxation for reducing financial burdens among individuals. Avoid conflicts on taxing rights ensuring income is taxed once or at a reduced rate. Ensure fair treatment on taxation from discrimination. Prevent tax evasion and fraud by sharing information with the contractual party. Promote economic activity in stimulating cross-border transactions and investments between the treaty countries. As of 9th October 2023, Thailand has signed the DTA with 61 countries. Nevertheless, the individual may be subject to double taxation in Thailand and the country where Thailand is not a contractual party to the DTA.

There Thai tax rates are progressive. 35% is the top rate.

Hi! What do you think about Thailand's new tax law from January? Now, all money transferred from abroad to Thailand could be taxed up to 35%. Of cause for people who are there for 180+ days per year. It sounds like it could really add to the tax burden in Thailand, not to mention all the extra hassle with tax registrations and returns, right?

Thai taxes are progressive. 35 % is the top rate. Then there are the double tax treaties and in general it is not clear how this effect individual retirees.
@YouTubeUser7171
@YouTubeUser7171 3 месяца назад
@@TheNarrowGate Unfortunately, DTAs will not be beneficial in many cases because Thailand will impose additional taxes on top of what we have already paid in our home countries. This is due to the fact that Thai taxable amounts are significantly lower compared to those in the USA, Canada, the EU, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. A lower cost of living always makes everyone's list of reasons to move to Thailand. However, there are some caveats. Whether the cost of living is a significant factor depends on the COL where you are coming from, your own personal standard of living, and what it is you buy. To say America is expensive doesn't differentiate the COL of San Francisco (where I am from) and rural Arkansas. If you are retired and have already paid off your home then if you come to Thailand and start renting you have probably added a housing expense you didn't have before yet what you get for you housing money is a really good deal. Some people in the US are quite content with a standard of living that I wouldn't accept. They are happy where they are and don't see the Thailand advantage. Finally, what you buy - if you come here and live and buy in an expat bubble buying western products and eating western food then you aren't like you reduce your living expenses by much. Some things are more expensive simply because they are imports to Thailand. My Honda CRV was more expensive in Thailand even though it was assembled in Thailand. I checked the US prices and I paid about 10-15% more here in Thailand (I think). So if you insist on eating burgers and steaks rather than boat noodles or grapow then you may be spending more on food than you were told it would be.
