Love ur take on culture David. I’m Mexican and my fiancé is american and one of the things I love the most about her is that she is so invested in learning the Spanish language and Mexican culture which I hold so dear to me. you put it into words what clicked in my mind when I decided I wanted to marry her. I dated a ton of latinas who were white washed and didn’t speak their native tongue and it always bothered me when I would communicate better with their parents than they ever could! And it wasn’t that they couldn’t speak the language that was the dealbreaker but it’s that they would never try or put in the effort! Like ur mom is the one of the most wisest person I’ve ever met or ur dad is literally the funniest person and you don’t know that cause that barrier you choose not to overcome!

@@itsover9008 Thats very true and i agree alot with that, but one thing I realized for me personally is if I want to have a better understanding and connection with my native tongue I also have to put in the work myself. Cause knowing enough to get around and/or having surface level conversations might be enough for some people but for me i want to dive deeper and understand more so I have to take the responsability to learn the more complicated and different elements of the said language. I personally want to people to assume that im a native speaker in that language so its up to me to bridge the gap between my current level and the level of a native speaker. And while parents are at fault for not teaching their kids i believe at a certain point one has to accept their reality and progress themselves. If that makes sense... lol

I appreciate you sharing this. I’m Korean American married to a Vietnamese American and my parents were worried that our relationship would not work since they felt our cultures would clash. However, we both took the time to understand where we come from and what our individual family dynamics are. We are lucky that both of our families can communicate in English, but we both take time to learn each other’s languages because it makes us feel more connected. We’ve been together for 10 ten years now and 2 years married going strong 🥰 Also with regards to dating, what I thought I wanted went out the window after I started dating my now husband. He showed me qualities that I even didn’t know I needed. I definitely think dating is sometimes equivalent to becoming best friends.

David I’ve been following you for years and these solo talks really opened my eye to how much you’ve evolved and how wise you’ve become. I used to take rejection so personal when it came to dating because I had crazy low self esteem. But after working on my internal character and getting my life together, I see dating as fun! It’s really just building connections and getting to know someone. Without the crazy pressure, I’ve actually been enjoying myself and learning a ton about myself and what I want and like.

25:00 "expounding" was used correctly! 💯 I too have moments where I subconsciously use big words thinking I didn't use them correctly but I end up doing so after I fact check ✅ myself. I hate how sometimes my gut can be wrong, so that idk when to trust it and when not to. But man does it feel good 🎉 when one's gut is correct. Been watching you on and off since 2011 my guy. It’s great to see the man you’ve grown into after all these years. Had no idea you didn’t grow up speaking Korean fluently and that you learned it later in life. The petty reasons for that are low-key hilarious. When you mentioned how your parents would yell at you in Korean and then have your brother translate for them while you yelled back in English, that could make for a great dark comedy scene. 😂 But good to see you’re still doing well and imparting great life lessons

Love the message and your advice! My husband is my first love and first boyfriend. We have been together for 13 years. Our relationship has worked for us because we communicate when we are feeling good. We comminicate when we are unhappy with each another AND allow each other to have space to express our feelings and thoughts without becoming defensive. We have similar values, we both understand where we stand in our relationship and most importantly, we show each other love and gratitude. Things are not always easy and through the years we have found ways to work together to build a better relationship.

Honestly speaking, even if I had listened to a podcast like this one while with my ex, I still don’t think I would have understood what David’s talking about, until I had actually experienced it first hand. Really enjoyed hearing your perspective on dating, opened my eyes to some aspects of my life. I've never been particularly successful in dating, could be the fear of putting myself out there. Rejection 's not a great thing to experience for anyone, it really can hurt your sense of self. Maybe I'm expecting perfection or my expectations in a partner aren’t realistic. I feel uneasy opening up to strangers due to bad experiences that have tainted my view on people and relationships as a whole and that’s what could be hindering me as well.
