Immigrant parents treat kids like adults and adults like little kids, it's one hell of an experience

Perfect. And i'm glad my parents did (regardless of how painful it was) and i wouldn't change that experience for anything.

Yes, yes yes!! This has to be one of the most accurate ways to explain it 👏

As a Haitian-American my parents do everything you said David 😂. The "Can't be wrong", dismissing your feelings despite you having every reason to be upset, oh boy I could go on and on 😂

I only learnt this lesson early last year with my parents aswell. No matter how wrong they are, in their head theyre right and even when they "admit" they are wrong, they have a reason for doing what they did and because I'm mad and angry, im now the one in the wrong or is more wrong than the wrong they did. Til this day they still do the same wrong thing but i don't bother anymore, not worth the hassle. I used to see it as giving up but now, it is what it is and move on.

How come they don’t have Korean shows ( that I know of) that show this kind of family dynamic. The stories they tell are interesting and funny. These two are great story tellers. David’s tolerance of people’s BS is hillarious because I have the same tolerance

They don’t have it cause they don’t want it :( I have gone to so many meetings about my story and experience but it’s not what they want. Asian Hollywood is the same as white Hollywood at times all gatekeepers with the same boring stories and narratives.

Damn, I found the stories from you and Ed super relatable to that of my own. Last year was definitely my lowest point with myself and my mom. I felt that she was always busting my balls and straight up verbally abusing me, so we would always get into fights. I had built up that immediate self-defense you mentioned whenever she tries to talk to me, to the point where I get instant headaches whenever I heard her voice. I mean, when her go-to thing is to nag or blame me for something first thing every single morning when I literally just woke up, I grow tired. I felt that she was never emotionally available for me, especially when she would just turn it around and somehow make it about her lmao. Maybe it's too much to ask that of an immigrant parent who came from a war-torn country with a broken and dysfunctional family but damn LOL. Maybe it's because we just can't accept the other person for who they are, and it all seems too far gone when we've already sat in each other's venom for too long. Either way, I found the podcast enlightening and also helpful. Many times, I feel like damn, am I the only one who feels and experiences this?

My dude! Preach that Korean kimchi slap drama shit all day boy! I cannot express enough how much our generation had to go through growing up while watching our parents develop or deteriorate while getting older. I try to give as much respect to my elders as MUCH as possible, but they must understand that we're all grown up and the current system of how our relationships work between them has either changed and its coming back to bite them on their ass. There are moments where I always think back on all those fights we would have and it can't be right that to them I'm always fucking up or always being in the position being wrong all the damn time. There is still a huge problem and a great gap between how our world is constantly changing, especially among the Asian community. And that gap is either getting wider or some of us lucky enough to get some resolution and some peace of mind. My Korean ass has 5 emos on my mom's side of the family. And currently since I'm the only pure eldest Korean boy, that toxic drama is just getting too much! Idk if we'll be able to resolve everything, but that change has already started with me. They need to do their part too to better understand one another and not this constant one sided relationship that might push us over the edge one day. The struggle is real, and I always feel like I'm fighting these battles all alone. All I want is just for everybody to have some GODDAMN self awareness and broader persepctives. Is that too hard to ask for?

Trust me, it’s not just a Korean thing. I’m Hmong and my parents are exactly the same yet they’re more Americanized which confuses me all the time. It’s mentally draining but we just gotta tolerate it by default. It’s either that or be like white kids running away from home and disowning each other.

This was a fire episode I love you and Ed together. Also side note, on one of your previous podcasts you mentioned the plane crash where people crashed in the mountains and had to eat their dead friends. There is a movie about it that just came out on Netflix, interesting timing when you mentioned it😅

Say our parents stayed in their home countries at our age, with no plans to move abroad or anything, would they have similar “attitudes” as us now? Or is it cause of the American influence? Or are we more conditioned to question why things are they way they are?

If the immigrant parent still reads up and/or observe modern society tend to not have any of the general immigrant parent tendencies. The problem might be that some immigrant just stop evolving as a person.

It's so baffling that David's Dad has such a difficult time relating to David but can be a pastor. Aren't Pastors really sympathetic people? The way David described him sounds like he has a teenager level of emotional competence.

i really loved dave chappelle growing up and his early netflix specials were really great. but the trans jokes for three specials in a row is getting old and hacky. it's not even that he's looking for laughs, he's looking for applause by people who will agree with him on "haha aren't trans people weird and icky? okay, laugh!!" and looking for applause instead of laughs is a bad route to take.
@hosakuwanderer2399
@hosakuwanderer2399 6 месяцев назад
I would agree, it is hacky at this point. And even the points he made about why the person they were talking about killed themselves seemed to be not truthful. People have looked into when she killed herself, she wasnt getting dragged on for weeks on twitter. we have her twitter records.
